Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 9i uses an under-display camera design that hides the lens under the screen, so there’s no visible notch or webcam cutout. The camera still exists, but it’s electronically “activated” through the display when you open it.
This guide breaks down how that invisible under-display camera behaves day to day, what you should expect from image quality and privacy controls, and how to test and troubleshoot when something feels off.

What an invisible under-display camera means on the Yoga Slim 9i
On the Yoga Slim 9i, the camera module sits beneath the panel, and the screen stays uninterrupted from the viewer’s perspective. When the camera is in use, the system turns on the right imaging path (and sometimes adjusts display behavior) so the sensor can capture your face or video.

Practically, that means two things: there’s no permanent physical opening to reference, and camera performance can be more sensitive to lighting, screen settings, and app access than a conventional webcam.

How under-display cameras typically work (and what to expect)
Under-display cameras rely on the display and camera sensor working together. The display’s pixel structure and light management determine how much usable light reaches the sensor.
Activation behavior you may notice
Depending on your configuration and software version, you might see the camera area become brighter, change texture, or show a subtle pattern while the camera is active. That’s normal for many under-display implementations.
Why lighting matters more
Because the sensor sees through a multi-layer display stack, low light can noticeably reduce sharpness and contrast. You’ll often get better results in evenly lit rooms than under a strong side light.
Focus, motion, and compression
Under-display cameras can be more prone to motion blur in dim scenes and may look softer in compressed video calls (especially when the app applies aggressive background processing).
Privacy and safety: what changes for you
An under-display camera improves the “looks” of the front of the laptop, but privacy still depends on permissions and hardware controls, not on how hidden the lens is.

Check for a hardware camera shutter (if present)
Some ultrathin laptops include a software-only indicator rather than a physical shutter. If your Yoga Slim 9i has a shutter or privacy key, use it when you want maximum assurance.
Use OS-level camera controls
Windows camera permissions let you restrict access by app and disable camera usage system-wide. That’s the most reliable control regardless of the “invisible” camera design.
How to test the camera on your Yoga Slim 9i (quick checklist)
Run these checks to confirm the camera is working, that it looks correct for your lighting, and that it behaves as expected in real apps.
- Open the camera app: Press Win and search for Camera, then open it.
- Look for “active” behavior: When the live preview starts, watch for a subtle change around the camera area.
- Try two lighting setups: Test one in bright, even indoor light and one in lower light near a lamp.
- Verify microphone + camera together: In your calls, test both, because some apps make it easy to think the camera is “fine” while only audio is failing.
- Test in a browser and a native app: Use a browser-based meeting (like YouTube Live Studio isn’t typical here, but browser conferencing is) and a native app (like Teams or Zoom if installed).
Set up privacy, permissions, and login features
On most Yoga Slim 9i configurations, camera access is governed by Windows privacy settings. If you’re planning to use face sign-in, you’ll also want to confirm Windows Hello camera permissions.

Image quality expectations and practical tips
Under-display cameras can look great in ideal conditions and show their limits in harsh lighting. Treat it like you’re optimizing a sensor behind a layered screen, not like you’re using a traditional top bezel webcam.
Use even, front-facing light
Try placing a lamp slightly in front of you rather than only overhead lighting or a strong window off to one side. The goal is to reduce shadow edges on your face.
Set screen brightness appropriately
If your display is extremely dim, the camera’s exposure can struggle. If it’s extremely bright, reflections can increase haze. Find a middle setting that looks good in normal use.
Keep your face centered and reduce motion
For video calls, stay roughly centered and avoid fast head movement in low-light scenes. Under-display sensors can lag slightly in focusing compared to standard webcams.

Expect softer detail than a premium external webcam
If you’re doing content creation or customer-facing calls where sharpness matters, an external USB webcam can still beat an under-display camera. For everyday meetings, the convenience of a full-screen look is the trade.
Common problems and troubleshooting
If the under-display camera doesn’t behave the way you expect, don’t assume it’s “broken.” These designs are sensitive to permissions, drivers, and app behavior.
Problem: Camera preview is black or frozen
Start with permissions and app conflicts before reinstalling anything.
- Close all apps that might be using the camera (meeting apps, browser tabs, messengers).
- Open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and confirm access.
- In Device Manager, locate Cameras and check whether the device shows an error icon.
Problem: App says no camera found
- Restart the laptop to clear stuck camera sessions.
- Check that the correct camera is selected in the app’s device picker (some apps list multiple camera-like sources).
- Update camera drivers and system components via Lenovo’s support tooling or Windows Update.
Problem: Image is blurry, hazy, or overly dark
- Increase lighting and try again in a brighter spot.
- Try a different app (Camera app first, then your conferencing app) to isolate whether it’s a driver issue or a per-app setting issue.
- Disable any “low light enhancement” toggles in the app if the image looks worse rather than better.
Problem: The camera preview shows artifacts or a visible pattern
Some under-display implementations can produce subtle patterns when the camera area is active. If artifacts are severe, check for display-related factors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Reduce screen brightness and check if artifacts change.
- Update the graphics/display drivers if your system offers them through Lenovo or Windows Update.
- Test with a different meeting app to see whether the effect is app-specific.
Problem: Windows Hello fails to recognize your face
- Improve consistent lighting and remove glare from glasses or reflective surfaces.
- Re-enroll Windows Hello if recognition is consistently failing.
- Verify the camera has permission in Windows privacy settings.
Comparisons: under-display vs notch vs standard webcam
Choosing between webcam designs is mostly about the trade you’re willing to make: aesthetics vs peak image quality vs setup simplicity.

| Design | Front appearance | Typical image quality | Common sensitivities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under-display (Yoga Slim 9i) | No visible camera cutout | Good in normal lighting; softer in low light | Lighting, screen settings, app exposure behavior |
| Standard webcam (top bezel) | Visible lens area | Often sharper and more consistent | Less sensitive to screen optics |
| Notch / cutout webcam | Small intrusion into the display | Usually closer to standard webcams | Form-factor compromises; sometimes limited placement |
When the invisible camera won’t behave: escalation path
If basic steps fail, you’ll get faster results by isolating the problem: hardware vs driver vs app settings.
- Prove it in Windows Camera: Confirm whether the built-in Camera app shows a live feed.
- Try one conferencing app: If Camera app works but one app fails, it’s often permissions or app selection.
- Update drivers: Use Lenovo’s support utilities or Windows Update to get the latest camera and display drivers.
- Check system updates: Under-display camera behavior can be affected by firmware and display software updates.
- Last resort: If the camera is non-functional across all apps and Camera app, contact Lenovo support with your model, serial number, and screenshots of Device Manager status.
FAQs
Is the under-display camera always recording?
No. It activates when an app requests camera access and the system grants permission. Use Windows privacy settings (and any hardware shutter, if present) to control access.
Why does the camera area look different when I open the camera app?
That’s often a normal behavior of under-display cameras. The display can change how it emits light so the sensor can capture an image through the screen layers.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will the Yoga Slim 9i under-display camera look as good as a normal webcam?
In many everyday lighting conditions, it can be very usable. In low light, a standard top-bezel webcam or an external USB webcam typically produces more consistent sharpness and less noise.
My face sign-in fails at night. Is it the camera or Windows Hello?
Most of the time it’s lighting and exposure. Try improving illumination and re-enroll Windows Hello. If it fails under bright, even lighting too, check camera permissions and driver updates.
Bottom Line
Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 9i invisible under-display camera delivers the clean, full-screen look you’re buying, but it trades some simplicity and low-light performance versus conventional webcams. If you test in your real lighting and lock down app permissions, it usually turns into a reliable everyday camera.
When things go wrong, isolate the issue by confirming the feed in the Windows Camera app first, then adjust permissions and drivers. That workflow saves time—especially with under-display designs that can be sensitive to lighting and app behavior.
