Lemma shortens the usual LaTeX debugging loop by putting the renderer inside the agent’s editing cycle. The browser-based editor writes source into a document, renders it with KaTeX, returns structured errors such as the block, character position, context and suggested fix, and lets the agent patch the affected block. Its author describes a local-first design: documents stay in browser IndexedDB, with no account or backend and no typed content leaving the tab. It is not a full LaTeX replacement. Lemma deliberately supports a practical subset, exposes unsupported constructs in the preview, and preserves them in .tex export. The result is most useful when you want targeted, reviewable repairs rather than another chat window that produces code you must copy into a separate compiler.
What is Lemma, and what problem does it solve?
Lemma is a local-first LaTeX pad built around an agent that can read and edit the same document a person is viewing. The project combines a CodeMirror source pane, a live KaTeX preview and a split view. Its author, Umar Pathan, reports building it in about a week across 57 commits. The implementation uses a static Next.js 16 export, React 19, strict TypeScript, Tailwind 4 and Zustand; those are implementation details rather than a claim that every deployment uses the same stack.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe problem is familiar: ask a model for an equation, paste the result into Overleaf or another compiler, discover an error, copy the diagnostic back into chat, paste the revised code, and repeat. Lemma moves the render step into the same agent loop. The model writes LaTeX, the page renders it, and the renderer’s response becomes a tool result the model can act on. Pathan’s summary is concise: “The model did not get smarter. The feedback loop just got shorter. That is the whole trick.”
You can inspect the project at its source repository and open the deployed app. Both links describe the project as it exists at the time of the author’s report; browser-agent support can change independently of the code.

How does Lemma let an AI see and fix a LaTeX error?
The key is a closed render-and-repair cycle, not a special model. A tool call changes the document, the renderer immediately checks the result, and the next tool call can target the reported location.
- Write source. The agent inserts or updates LaTeX in a document block.
- Render in the page. Lemma parses the document and renders supported mathematics through KaTeX.
- Collect diagnostics. The agent calls
get_render_errorsand receives structured data instead of having to infer a failure from a screenshot. - Patch the affected block. The agent calls
update_blockwith the stable block ID and corrected content. - Render again. A successful update removes the diagnostic; the changed block briefly glows so a person can see what moved.
In the demonstration document, the deliberate command typo alpa produces an error. The returned record includes a block ID, message, suggestion, character position, surrounding context and a recommended fix. The agent replaces the typo with alpha through update_block, and the page re-renders. The author presents this as a one-pass correction demonstration, not as a benchmark showing that every generated document is fixed in one call.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What information does get_render_errors return?
The diagnostic is designed to be actionable. Instead of a generic “compile failed,” the agent receives enough location data to avoid rewriting unrelated text. A typical result can be understood as:
{"blockId":"…","message":"…","suggestion":"…","position":123,"context":"…","recommendedFix":"…"}
The exact values depend on the document and error. The important design choice is that the renderer’s feedback remains machine-readable, so the agent can select a block and a character range rather than asking a human to transcribe a compiler message.
Lemma’s tool API returns expected failures as values shaped like { error, hint } instead of throwing exceptions. Pathan says this avoids a rejected tool execution collapsing into a generic UnknownError that gives the agent no recovery path. That choice matters in an autonomous loop: an invalid update should become an intelligible next step, not terminate the conversation.
Why are stable block IDs better than find-and-replace?
Every equation, theorem, paragraph, table and figure receives a stable block ID. The agent can therefore say “update this theorem block” instead of searching for a quoted string that may occur several times or may have changed since the previous read.
When raw LaTeX is reparsed, a reconciliation pass tries to preserve those IDs. It uses exact matching first, then similarity scoring with a position penalty. According to the project description, the approach is intended to survive reordering, inserted and deleted blocks, and typo edits; unit tests cover each of those cases. This is still a software design claim, not proof that every pathological edit will reconcile perfectly.

Block identity also makes review and undo more precise. A short equation can be replaced without sending the whole document back through a string-based diff, and a human can see which visual region changed.
Which WebMCP tools can the agent use?
Lemma exposes 16 tools through the WebMCP integration. They divide naturally into document reads, document writes and presentation or export actions.
| Group | Tools | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Read | list_documents, get_document, get_document_outline, search_documents, get_render_errors |
Find a file, inspect its structure, search content or retrieve current render diagnostics. |
| Write | create_document, insert_blocks, update_block, delete_block, undo_last_change |
Create and edit block-aware documents, remove content or reverse an eligible agent change. |
| Comments | add_comment, reply_to_comment, resolve_comment |
Leave discussion attached to document content and close a resolved thread. |
| View and output | set_view, export_document |
Change the visible layout and export the document, including its TeX source. |
Tool descriptions, parameters, outputs, insertion sizes, block sizes and comment sizes are capped. Read operations carry a readOnlyHint. Content containing user-written LaTeX or comments is marked with an untrustedContentHint, signaling that text from the document should be treated as data rather than as instructions to the agent.
How do human review and undo work?
Lemma is designed to keep an agent’s activity visible. Agent-authored comments receive a visible badge, and edited blocks glow briefly after a change. The intention is not to hide automation behind a silent background process.
undo_last_change records who made each edit. The agent can undo its own most recent change, but the command refuses to overwrite a newer human edit. That guard prevents an automated rollback from erasing work someone made after the agent acted. It is a narrower guarantee than full version control: you should still export or otherwise preserve important documents before large automated transformations.
What LaTeX features does Lemma render?
Lemma targets a useful, explicit subset rather than claiming compatibility with the entire TeX ecosystem.
| Area | Reported behavior | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Math | KaTeX rendering | Fast live previews for supported mathematical commands. |
| Numbering and references | Document-wide numbering, live ref and eqref |
References can update as blocks are added or reordered. |
| Theorems | Counters across 17 environments | Multiple theorem-like environments share document-level numbering. |
| Chemistry | mhchem |
Chemical notation is supported where the parser recognizes it. |
| Preamble | Preamble macros | Defined macros can participate in the supported rendering path. |
| Tables | Table parsing, including multicolumn and booktabs rules |
Common structured tables can be previewed without flattening them to plain text. |
| TikZ | A subset compiled to inline SVG | Basic lines, shapes, nodes, fills, dash patterns and named colors are covered. |
| Unsupported constructs | Shown explicitly in preview and preserved in .tex export |
The source is not silently discarded, but the visual preview may not match a full TeX engine. |
The stated principle is “a fast honest subset” rather than a full-LaTeX clone. If your paper depends on a package outside this scope, use the exported source with a conventional TeX distribution and treat Lemma’s preview as partial.

Is Lemma a full replacement for Overleaf or a desktop TeX workflow?
No. It addresses a different bottleneck: giving an agent immediate renderer feedback and block-level editing. A hosted collaborative environment or a local TeX installation can still be preferable when you need broad package coverage, established collaboration features, reproducible builds or a mature publishing pipeline.
| Decision axis | Lemma | Hosted editor or conventional TeX workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Storage model | Author describes browser-resident IndexedDB, with no backend or account. | Depends on the service or local setup; storage and account requirements vary. |
| Agent feedback | Render errors are exposed directly through a tool. | Usually requires a separate compile step and a human or integration to relay diagnostics. |
| Edit granularity | Stable block IDs support targeted insert, update and delete operations. | Many workflows operate on files or text ranges, so identity must be inferred by the tool. |
| LaTeX breadth | Documented subset with explicit unsupported constructs. | A full TeX distribution generally covers more packages; hosted support depends on its compiler image. |
| Human controls | Glowing edits, agent badges and guarded agent undo. | Review and rollback mechanisms differ by product or version-control setup. |
| Client compatibility | Requires a browser/client that can discover and invoke the WebMCP tools, or Lemma’s Tool Inspector. | Usually relies on the editor’s own web app, desktop app or command-line toolchain. |
| Collaboration | No collaborative backend is described. | Hosted services may provide sharing and simultaneous editing; local tools generally need separate collaboration software. |
For the narrow question “can an agent repair a render error without a copy-and-paste detour?”, Lemma is purpose-built for that. For “can it compile every package in a production manuscript and coordinate a research team?”, the project does not claim to replace a full environment.
How do you try Lemma with a browser agent?
The project describes two routes: a browser with WebMCP enabled and a built-in Tool Inspector for clients that cannot expose the tools directly.
Using the ChatGPT desktop app’s browser
- Open the live Lemma app.
- Use the ChatGPT desktop app’s built-in browser, which the author identifies as the easiest path in the demonstrated setup.
- Load the demo document containing the deliberate
alpatypo. - Ask the agent to inspect and fix the document’s render errors.
- Watch the tool calls: the expected sequence is a read of the document or diagnostics, an
update_blockoperation, and a fresh render. - Confirm that the corrected block renders and that the visible glow identifies the changed region.
Using Chrome’s WebMCP testing flag
- In Chrome, open
chrome://flags/#enable-webmcp-testing. - Enable the WebMCP testing flag and relaunch the browser if Chrome requests it.
- Open the live app and use an agent client that can discover imperative WebMCP tools.
- Issue the same request to fix the demo render errors, then inspect the resulting tool calls and preview.
Flags are experimental browser settings. Their label, availability and behavior can change, so a missing flag is a client-version issue rather than evidence that the document itself is broken.

Using the Tool Inspector
Lemma includes a Tool Inspector exposing the same tools for users without a WebMCP-capable browser. This is useful for manually checking inputs and outputs, and for separating a Lemma rendering problem from an agent-discovery problem.
What browser and client compatibility caveats should you know?
WebMCP support is not uniform. The author reports that ChatGPT’s browser implementation discovered imperative tools but skipped declarative form tools, which is why search_documents was changed to an imperative tool. The report also says a sandboxed Codex CLI had no bridge to browser-tab tools while the ChatGPT desktop browser did. These are environment-specific observations, not permanent compatibility guarantees; clients can change their discovery behavior.
If an agent cannot see the tools, first test the Tool Inspector. If the Inspector works but the external client does not, the likely failure is tool discovery or browser bridging. The WebMCP specification is available at webmachinelearning.github.io/webmcp; consult the current client documentation before treating a particular flag or integration path as stable.

Does local-first mean private by default?
According to the author’s description, documents remain in IndexedDB in the browser tab, with no backend, no account and no typed content leaving the browser. That architecture reduces the amount of content sent to a service, but it does not make every use private automatically. Browser extensions, an agent client, copied exports and any future deployment changes can introduce their own data paths.
For sensitive work, verify the network behavior of the exact deployment, avoid pasting secrets into prompts, export a backup and review tool permissions. The untrustedContentHint on user-written LaTeX and comments is a useful boundary for agent safety, not a substitute for checking the client that is driving the page.
How fast is the renderer?
Lemma uses a render cache keyed by a numbering version and block hashes. The author says this allows only changed blocks to re-render, including in an example document with 60 blocks. That is an author-reported implementation detail, not an independent performance test or a promise of a particular latency on your hardware.
The cache strategy is especially relevant when an agent changes one equation in a long document: unchanged blocks can reuse prior output while numbering changes invalidate the portions that depend on them. Documents with unsupported constructs, large SVG output or extensive cross-references may still require more work than the simple typo demo.
What evidence supports the project’s reliability claims?
The project description reports 16 tools, 17 theorem environments, a one-week build and 57 commits. It also mentions unit tests for block-ID reconciliation cases and the 60-block cache example. Those figures describe the implementation as reported by its author; they are not an external audit, benchmark or production-support guarantee.
The article associated with the project says frontier models sit near 50% on LaTeX tasks in the TeXpert benchmark, but it does not identify the benchmark publisher, edition or year. Treat that number as an unattributed contextual claim, not as a precise current measurement. Lemma’s demonstrated value does not depend on a model suddenly becoming better at LaTeX: the tool loop gives the model another chance to observe and correct a concrete renderer response.
Can Lemma replace the copy-error-from-Overleaf workflow?
For small and medium edits inside Lemma’s supported syntax, it can remove the manual copy step: the agent receives the error, targets the block and applies a visible patch. It is less suitable as a sole build system when your source depends on packages outside the documented subset, when you need multi-user collaboration, or when the final artifact must be validated by a full TeX toolchain.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Choose Lemma first when fast agent feedback, browser-local storage and reviewable block edits are your priorities.
- Keep a full TeX workflow when package breadth, publication-grade compilation or reproducibility matters more than in-page repair.
- Use both when Lemma can accelerate drafting and diagnosis while an external compiler remains the final authority.
The safest hybrid workflow is to draft and repair in Lemma, export the .tex source, compile it with your normal toolchain, and inspect any constructs Lemma marked as unsupported. That treats the browser preview as an efficient feedback surface without confusing it with a universal TeX engine.
What should you check before trusting an automated edit?
A short review checklist catches the failure modes that a successful preview can miss:
Recommended Free Tools
- Read the changed block and confirm the mathematical meaning, not just the absence of a render error.
- Check references, theorem numbering and table structure after insertions or deletions.
- Look for an unsupported-construct notice before assuming the preview is publication-equivalent.
- Verify that the edit was agent-authored or human-authored as intended, using the visible badge and glow.
- Use guarded undo if the agent’s most recent change is wrong; do not expect it to erase a newer human edit.
- Export a
.texbackup before a large batch operation. - Run the exported source through the final TeX environment required by your journal, class file or build pipeline.
Lemma’s contribution is a tighter feedback loop and more precise edits. Human review remains responsible for correctness, semantics and final compilation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Lemma documents stored when I close the tab?
The project description says documents are kept in IndexedDB in the browser tab. It does not describe cloud synchronization or account-based recovery, so export important work before clearing browser data or moving to another device.
Can Lemma compile custom LaTeX packages?
The documented renderer is an intentional subset built around KaTeX plus selected features such as mhchem, macros, tables and a limited TikZ-to-SVG path. Constructs outside that scope remain in the exported source but may be shown as unsupported in the preview.
What happens if a person edits a block after the agent changes it?
The agent’s undo operation records edit authorship and refuses to roll back when a newer human edit exists. This prevents an automated undo from silently overwriting the person’s later work.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do I need a WebMCP browser to inspect Lemma’s tools?
No. The project includes a Tool Inspector that exposes the same operations for clients without direct WebMCP support. Direct discovery still depends on the browser and agent client recognizing the tool type.
Is the 50% LaTeX-model figure a Lemma benchmark?
No. The accompanying discussion presents it as an unattributed claim about frontier models on the TeXpert benchmark, without a publisher, edition or year. It should not be read as a measured accuracy score for Lemma.
