The console and controller
The main build recreates the proportions and visual language of the first PlayStation rather than a modern system. The controller is made from LEGO elements and attaches to the console’s front port. The hidden Gran Turismo diorama
Opening the console reveals a small Gran Turismo display. It includes a miniature racing track and tiny cars, giving the interior a scene that can be viewed when the lid is raised. Because the scene is brick-built, it has no game code, moving race system or playable controls.
The hidden Ape Escape diorama
The second removable insert depicts an Ape Escape island scene. Its monkey has a red or blue helmet light that can be swapped, allowing the display to be arranged in either color. Like the Gran Turismo insert, it can remain inside the console or be taken out for separate display.

How does the LEGO PlayStation’s Open mechanism work?
Pressing the model’s Open control raises the replica lid. LEGO Design Director Frédéric André says the design team selected a Technic suspension element after trying other approaches because it recreated the familiar resistance and return of the original button. In his words, “Using a Technic™ suspension element gave it the same satisfying feeling as pressing the button on the original console.”
- Press Open. The model’s newly created Open button is a real, movable LEGO component rather than a printed label.
- The internal linkage responds. The Technic suspension element supplies the tactile action that LEGO says makes the press feel like the original console’s lid button.
- The lid rises. The top opens so the two interior scenes can be seen and removed.
- Pull out either scene. Each diorama is designed to be detached and displayed on its own.
- Close the model for storage. The inserts can be returned inside the console and the lid lowered again.
That is the mechanism LEGO documents. The published designer explanation does not provide a complete force-path diagram, a part-by-part linkage inventory or a wiring specification. It also does not establish that the Power button is coupled to an electronic circuit. Descriptions of springs, gears, motors, powered lights or a boot-up sequence would go beyond the documented design.
What do the Open and Power buttons actually do?
LEGO describes both controls as functional or tactile physical buttons. Open operates the lid. Power is presented as a physical model button that adds to the replica’s interaction; it is not evidence that the brick-built console supplies electricity, starts an operating system or controls a real PlayStation. The model’s value is the mechanical gesture and display experience, not electronic functionality.

Does the LEGO PlayStation play games or read discs?
No. 72306 is a display set, not a working game console. It has no documented disc drive, software, television output, electronic controller interface or playable version of Gran Turismo or Ape Escape.
The game references are represented through the two miniature scenes. Calling them “games inside the console” can be misleading: they are removable brick-built displays that use recognizable settings and vehicles to make the interior feel like a tribute to the original system.
Can the interior scenes be displayed separately?
Yes. Both inserts are removable, so you can show the console closed, open it to reveal both scenes, or place either diorama beside the console. This gives the set more than one display configuration without requiring any electronic change.
The Gran Turismo insert focuses on a track-and-car composition. The Ape Escape insert focuses on an island setting and the monkey’s interchangeable red or blue helmet light. LEGO’s published description does not claim that either scene has motorized movement, lighting circuits or interactive game functions.
Is the LEGO Astro Bot included in every box?
No. Sony advertises a separate 276-piece LEGO Astro Bot as a PlayStation Direct purchase promotion available while supplies last. It is not a guaranteed item in every standard 72306 package.

The dimensions are for the assembled console and do not specify extra clearance for removing the dioramas or plugging in the controller. If you plan a shelf display, allow practical room in front and above the model so the lid can open and the inserts can be lifted out without hitting another object.

The model is an adult display build with a substantial piece count, so organize parts by the instructions rather than treating the console as a quick snap-together toy. Build the interior scenes carefully before closing the shell around them, and check that the removable inserts can slide out freely before placing the completed model on a shelf. The established behavior is simple: Open is pressed, the lid opens, and the interior scenes become accessible. LEGO attributes the characteristic press sensation to a Technic suspension element and identifies newly created elements for the Open, Power and controller buttons.
LEGO has not published, in the designer account, a complete engineering diagram showing every connecting part or the exact internal force path. The available information therefore supports a tactile mechanical explanation, not a claim about hidden motors, a disc spindle, electronic lighting, battery operation or a powered controller port. Keeping that distinction clear prevents the model from being mistaken for a functional PlayStation.
Who is this set for?
72306 makes the most sense for collectors of original PlayStation design, adult LEGO builders and people who want a conversation-piece display with a small interactive action.
