Can you put a disc in and play a game?
No. The model’s opening details should not be confused with a disc-reading mechanism. A real PlayStation disc drive needs an optical reader, a motor, electronics and software to interpret the disc; the official LEGO and Sony descriptions do not identify any of those components in set 72306.

Ape Escape scene
The Ape Escape element is another small scene based on the game’s imagery. Like the racing scene, it can be removed for separate display. The game title identifies what the diorama portrays; it does not grant a license, disc or digital entitlement to play the original.

LEGO announced Insiders access for October 1, 2026, followed by general availability on October 4, 2026. On October 30, 2026, the US LEGO product page showed the set as “Available now” at $179.99. A third-party creator has shown an electronics-equipped prototype and discussed a possible future Kickstarter conversion. That report concerns a custom project, not a capability included with retail set 72306 and not an upgrade endorsed or supplied by LEGO or Sony. The creator’s discussion appears in this Reddit post.
Prototype demonstrations can combine LEGO-built exterior parts with a separate computer, emulation hardware, screen, power supply and custom wiring. How can you check a listing before buying?
- Match the set number. Look for 72306 and compare the piece count and dimensions with LEGO’s product information.
- Read the capability language. “Display model,” “diorama,” “mechanical button” and “model controller” describe the official feature set. Claims about HDMI, USB, emulation, discs or downloadable games indicate something beyond the standard listing.
