Upgrade the witch first, then concentrate every Friend shard, ticket and enhancement material on one matching-element team. In Legend of Witch: Idle RPG, “heroes” means the single playable witch plus gacha companions called Friends. The most expensive mistakes are promoting an off-element Friend, spreading shards across low-tier units, buying Soul Stones before redeeming free codes, and enhancing gear that is about to be replaced.
The safest route is to push the witch’s Growth stats and usable equipment, choose the element that matches the witch’s skills, deploy the highest-tier Friends you actually own in that element, and only then fund Friend equipment, Laboratory bonuses, titles and Companion Transcendence. Lightning is the strongest target in the October 2026 tier list if your account can support Aura and the other high-tier Lightning Friends; otherwise a complete Fire, Wind or Water team is better than a stronger-looking mixed roster.

The game has one playable witch, while the summonable “heroes” are Friends. Equipment, skills, attributes, companions and titles are separate progression systems that all compete for time or scarce materials. A Friend’s star rating, element and passive bonus matter more to team building than its attack animation.
Friends range from one to five stars. Five-star units are difficult to obtain early, so waiting for a perfect roster can stall progression. Pocket Gamer’s Cristina Mesesan puts the practical rule plainly: “Also, you probably won’t start getting any 5-star units on your team until later on, since they are so difficult to acquire. Either way, there are alternatives, so when picking them for your team, just pick the available highest-tier you own.”

What should I upgrade first?
Use this order whenever a new system unlocks. It keeps permanent or broadly useful power ahead of upgrades tied to a temporary unit.
- Witch Growth: spend Gold and level-up Stat Points on the offensive stat that breaks the current stage. If the witch dies before the wave ends, move the next points into survivability instead. The Growth menu is the early sink for Gold and wand statistics.
- Current equipment: use Auto Equip to put on the best available pieces, then enhance only when the increase helps clear the stage or survive its damage. Compare every new drop before investing.
- Skills for the wall: improve wave-clear skills when ordinary stages are the problem; improve boss or defensive skills when a single target or survival check stops progress. Equal spending on every skill is usually less efficient.
- One elemental Friend squad: select the element that matches the witch’s skills, deploy the highest-tier Friends in that element and promote that group before touching a bench unit.
- Friend equipment and enhancement: after the active squad is stable, put Friend gear and its enhancement materials on those deployed units, not on a reserve Friend.
- Stage Collection, Laboratory and events: choose Bonus Gold, Bonus EXP, Skill CDR or Skill Damage that supports the same build. Exchange event currency for bottleneck materials before cosmetics.
- Late systems: add titles, Companion Transcendence, Dragon and Monster Hunter systems, and Arena investment only after the core PvE team can progress without them.

How do element and star rating affect Friend upgrades?
Element match comes first. Friends do not provide a universal-element solution, so a lower-star Friend that boosts the witch’s active element can outperform a higher-star unit that does not. Pocket Gamer states: “The element is the deciding factor for the Friends. You want to deploy the ones that match your witch’s skill elements.”
For a Fire build, for example, Fire Friends increase Fire damage; the same principle applies to Wind, Water and Lightning. Pocket Gamer adds: “For instance, if you want to go for a full Fire build, you will need to deploy Fire Friends because they will boost the Fire DMG. The same applies for each element, since at the moment, we don’t have any universal element Friends.”

A mixed team is acceptable while the account is young. Once one element has enough usable Friends, stop feeding shards to units that do not support it.

Which Friends should I upgrade first?
Use the following October 2026 Pocket Gamer ranking as a priority guide, not as a reason to abandon an element you cannot field. A matching A-tier Friend is generally a better investment than an off-element S-tier Friend.

Lightning deserves special attention. Pocket Gamer marks Aura as “mandatory” and describes the Lightning team as potentially the strongest because it has three five-star kits. That advantage only appears when the account can actually deploy and skill-up the recommended Lightning Friends; a half-built Lightning roster is not automatically better than a complete Fire or Wind team.
When is Skill Damage better than Bonus Gold?
When two Friends fill the same elemental slot, Skill Damage is usually the more immediate combat upgrade. On Fire, Pocket Gamer notes that Leonta is a three-star unit with the same Bonus Gold bonus as Draco, while Bella’s Skill Damage is preferred. On Wind, Willow can give up some Wind ATK in exchange for Skill Damage, which can win when skill scaling is limiting stage progress. Keep Bonus Gold units for farming only when the extra gold accelerates a real upgrade; do not sacrifice a needed combat multiplier for a small economy gain.
How should I handle low-star Friends?
Promote the best matching unit currently on the account, even if it is not five-star. Save new shards for the chosen elemental core, and stop investing in a low-tier Friend as soon as a stronger same-element replacement is ready. This avoids paying the promotion cost twice.
How do Friends shards, promotion and Transcendence work?
Promotion consumes Friend shards, and the game exposes the remaining requirement in its Friend interface. Version 0.95 added a four-star shard-probability display and a remaining-shard display after MAX Promotion; version 1.17 added Companion Transcendence. These updates confirm the systems but do not publish a universal shard ladder.

There is no official Dreamplay table establishing the shard count for every star or a complete Friends summon-percentage table. Do not import shard totals from another idle RPG. Open the Friend’s promotion screen, read the remaining-shard counter for that specific unit and plan around the number shown there.
- Open Friends and select the unit that belongs to the active elemental team.
- Check its star-up requirement and the current remaining-shard display.
- Promote only when the stat or passive improves the stage you are trying to clear.
- After MAX Promotion, inspect the Transcendence requirements before committing rare materials; keep the same core units rather than starting a second team.
Companion Transcendence is a later sink, not a reason to spread early shards across every Friend in the collection.
Should I spend Diamonds on summons?
Diamonds are most valuable when they are converted into progress for the selected element. Use free tickets first, avoid random elemental spending and keep a reserve for a banner or summon opportunity that benefits the core team. The Basic summon consumes one gear ticket per summon, or Diamonds when tickets are unavailable, according to the indexed beginner guidance.

How do I decide between upgrading gear and upgrading the witch?
Upgrade the witch when a permanent Growth increase is available and gear when a new piece gives an immediate, meaningful jump. Gear has a replacement risk; Growth and well-chosen Collection bonuses remain useful across drops.

- Enhance only if the new piece helps clear the present stage, dungeon or boss.
- Recheck equipment at every difficulty spike instead of continuing to pour materials into a temporary item.
CityParkGames’ specific warning is worth following: “Avoid investing heavily in equipment that you expect to replace immediately unless the upgrade provides a necessary short-term advantage.” Equipment summon capacity also grows over time; version 1.05 raised the maximum equipment-summon level from LV20 to LV30, so tickets and Diamonds remain a long-term sink.

Codes can expire, especially the monthly and weekly entries. Pocket Gamer says to watch in-game announcements for new strings. Do not confuse this game with Legend of Witches (plural): codes such as VIP888 belong to that separate title and will not work here.

An indexed beginner guide says Friends unlock at Rank Iron 3, but that page was not live for verification. Check the in-game progression screen rather than spending resources based on that unconfirmed gate.
Can I change my witch’s element after investing in Friends?
The documented strategy assumes that Friends boost the witch’s skill element, but it does not establish a universal respec or refund system. Until the game explicitly shows a reset option, treat an elemental Friend investment as committed and choose the build before promoting units.
What should I do if a summon level appears to reset or lose progress?
