Save the exact post location and its context before asking for removal. Record the platform, post or video URL, uploader’s handle and profile link, visible dates and times, related messages or threats, and the time you found the material. Take screenshots or save a PDF only when lawful and safe, then submit the platform’s nonconsensual-intimate-imagery (NCII) report promptly. You do not need to buy equipment or download the video before reporting.
If the sexual imagery shows someone who was under 18 when it was made, do not download, forward, or take screenshots containing the imagery. Preserve only the URL, account and other non-imagery details and use child-protection reporting channels instead. The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s guidance explains why location evidence should come first: “People who have experienced serious online abuse usually want harmful content removed immediately. But it is important to preserve evidence first.”

What should I preserve first?
Preserve the location, identity, context and timing of the post—not a circulating copy of the video. A precise URL and a short contemporaneous record are usually more useful for a platform report than a file downloaded from an unknown service.
Record the exact location
- Copy the complete post or video URL, not just the platform homepage.
- Write down the platform or service name.
- Record the uploader’s handle and profile URL.
- Note any visible post date, time, title, caption, hashtags or post ID.
- If the same material appears in several places, give every occurrence its own entry and URL.
On a mobile app, use the Share, More or Copy link command if the address bar is hidden. The eSafety Commissioner’s evidence-collection guidance lists the service, URL, usernames, profile links and dates and times as core details to capture: eSafety evidence guidance.

Preserve the surrounding context
Where taking a screenshot is lawful and safe, include enough of the page to show the account identity, surrounding text, location and visible date or time. Keep related direct messages, threats, search results and account-security alerts when they explain how the post was found or why it matters. If a conversation takes several captures, number them in order and retain the sender’s original phone number, username or email address where it is visible.
Separate platform time from your observation time
Record both the date and time shown on the post and the date and time you personally viewed or captured it. Add your time zone. A platform’s upload timestamp is not the same as the time you discovered the post, and confusing the two can make a later chronology unclear.

Is it safe or lawful to screenshot or download the video?
There is no single rule for every country, platform or type of leaked video. For an adult case, a lawful, safely obtained original may sometimes be retained in a separate place, but downloading a fresh copy is not a prerequisite for an NCII report. For suspected sexual imagery made when the depicted person was under 18, the ordinary screenshot advice is overridden: do not create a new copy.
Adult material
Take only the minimum permissible screenshots needed to show the account, URL, context and relevant messages. Do not forward the video to friends, upload it to an unrelated storage or file-sharing service, or circulate it to “prove” what happened. Do not use third-party video-downloader sites merely to make a copy; the report can start with the post location and context.
Some services notify another user when a screenshot is taken. The 2026 edition of the Cyber Abuse Manual recommends screenshots and PDFs that show date, time and URL, while warning about screenshot notifications. If notification could increase danger, stop and seek safety or legal advice before capturing anything.
Imagery made when someone was under 18
The relevant age is the person’s age when the imagery was created, not only their age today. Do not download, save, forward or take an imagery-containing screenshot, and do not send the material to a hash service. Copy the page URL, account name, post identifier and other non-imagery details instead.

In the United States, report suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline and report the account and post through the hosting platform. NCMEC’s Take It Down service can create a hash from an explicit image or video already on the depicted person’s device without uploading the media. It is intended for material involving someone who was under 18 when it was made, including people who are adults now. NCMEC expressly says: “Please do NOT send, share, or download any image or video in order to submit to Take It Down.” Participating platforms and the service’s reach have limits; it is not a guarantee of removal everywhere. If a child is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
How do I preserve evidence in an adult case?
Use this sequence when the material depicts an adult and taking the steps is lawful and safe.
- Open the post without interacting with it. Do not like, comment, subscribe, follow, download or message the uploader. If viewing it could expose you to danger, stop and use the URL already available to you.
- Copy the exact URL. Paste it into a private note. Add the platform, account handle, profile link, visible post date and time, and your own observation time with time zone.
- Capture context, not a collection. Take the smallest number of screenshots that establish the account, surrounding post, URL or visible location, date or time, and any related threat. A PDF of the page can be useful when the platform layout is long or changes during scrolling.
- Preserve related communications. Capture messages, emails or alerts that connect the uploader to the post or show a threat to publish. Keep the sender’s identifying details visible where possible. Do not edit the originals to make them look more persuasive.
- Create a private event log. For each occurrence, write what you saw, when you saw it, what evidence you made, when you reported it, the report number or confirmation, and every reply from the platform.
- Report promptly through the host. Use the post’s or platform’s NCII reporting flow and provide the precise location. Save the confirmation page or email. If the material is reposted, add each new URL as a separate entry rather than overwriting the first one.
This sequence follows the practical evidence lists published by eSafety and victim-support advocates. It is an organizational record, not a guarantee that screenshots alone will be admissible in court. If litigation is likely, ask a lawyer whether to request that the platform preserve account and access records; a personal takedown request and a formal legal preservation request are different actions.
How should I store adult-only evidence?
Store records where the person responsible cannot access them and where ordinary device sharing will not expose them to others. The 2026 advocate manual discusses an external hard drive or USB flash drive kept away from the abuser; either is optional, not a requirement.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Keep the original screenshots, PDFs and exported messages in a separate folder with read-only copies when practical.
- Use neutral filenames such as the date, platform and sequence number rather than the intimate person’s name.
- Keep a second copy only when doing so is safe and lawful; do not place it in an account the suspected abuser can access.
- Retain report confirmations and platform replies alongside the log, but do not alter the original captures.
- Do not print or duplicate intimate imagery unnecessarily. A document binder can organize report receipts or non-imagery notes without creating more copies of the video.
If the other person controls your phone, computer, cloud account or home, ask a domestic-violence advocate or lawyer for a safer storage plan before moving files. Never use storage advice as a reason to obtain sexual imagery of a minor.
What should I do after preserving the location?
Submit the host platform’s NCII report as soon as you have the URL and enough context to identify the post. Do not wait for a perfect download or a complete archive.

United States removal deadline
The Federal Trade Commission says covered platforms must remove qualifying NCII and known identical copies within 48 hours after a qualifying request. That is a U.S. legal deadline for covered platforms and qualifying requests, not a universal promise that every website worldwide will comply. The FTC’s explanation and reporting guidance are at consumer.ftc.gov/articles/image-based-abuse-what-know-and-do. If a covered platform’s process is missing, broken or past the deadline, the FTC says you can report the problem.
What counts as NCII?
“Leaked video” is a broad everyday phrase. It may describe an intimate recording, an altered or deepfake sexual video, a blackmail threat or another unauthorized post. The FTC includes real, digitally altered and AI-generated intimate imagery in its NCII guidance, but an ordinary unauthorized video may not qualify for every NCII route. Describe the facts accurately rather than selecting a legal category that does not fit.
Which reporting route fits the situation?
Use the hosting platform first when the post is still online, then add the route that matches the people depicted, the service involved and your rights in the material.
| Route | What it addresses | Main qualification or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting platform’s NCII report | Removal of a qualifying intimate post at its source | Provide the specific post location. The FTC’s 48-hour rule applies to covered U.S. platforms and qualifying requests, not all sites worldwide. |
| StopNCII.org | Hash-based detection by participating platforms for eligible adults | The subject must currently be an adult, must have been at least 18 when the media was made, and must possess the image or video. The media remains on the device. |
| NCMEC Take It Down and CyberTipline | Hash-based limiting of qualifying under-18 imagery and reports of suspected child exploitation | Do not obtain a new copy for submission. Participating platforms have limits, and the CyberTipline is a separate reporting channel. |
| Google NCII reporting | Eligible intimate content in Google services, including Search | A Google report does not replace a report to the website hosting the video. Google distinguishes a product or policy report from a legal notice. |
| U.S. copyright or DMCA notice | Potential copyright infringement where the sender owns or represents the owner’s rights | Being depicted does not necessarily mean you authored the video. Copyright is not an automatic substitute for an NCII report. |
What if someone is threatening to publish the video?
Treat blackmail as a safety and law-enforcement issue as well as a takedown issue. Do not pay, send more images or negotiate by supplying additional material. Preserve the threat’s account, message URL, sender details and timestamps, then report the perpetrator to law enforcement where appropriate and use the platform’s abuse channel.
Be cautious with paid “sextortion assistance” companies. In an October 2026 consumer alert, the FTC warned about deceptive assistance claims and pointed to free qualifying platform-reporting routes: FTC sextortion-assistance warning.

For a lawful adult-page capture where you need a clean record of the page around the post, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan listed here. It is a convenience for capturing a URL, not a replacement for recording the exact post location, preserving threats or making the platform’s NCII report. Do not use any capture service to create a new copy of suspected child sexual imagery; follow the under-18 route above.

What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The link opens the platform homepage instead of the post
Use the post’s Share or More menu to copy its direct link. Record the uploader handle and profile URL as a second identifier, then try the link in a logged-in browser only if doing so is safe.

Keep the URL, account name, profile link, messages and your observation time. Report the now-unavailable location anyway, and record any repost URLs separately. A missing video does not justify downloading a copy from another site.
The platform asks for a file upload
Start with the exact URL and explain that you are reporting a post hosted on its service. For adult material, upload only what the platform’s form lawfully requires and what you can safely provide. For suspected under-18 imagery, do not create a new copy to satisfy an upload field; use the platform’s child-safety channel and NCMEC routes where applicable.
A screenshot includes a private message or unrelated person
Capture a narrower frame or redact unrelated information on a working copy while retaining the unaltered original securely. Do not crop away the account, URL or timestamp that proves where the post appeared.
The platform has not replied
Keep the submission confirmation, note the date and time, and follow the platform’s escalation path. In the United States, the FTC’s 48-hour rule applies only to covered platforms and qualifying NCII requests; outside that scope, deadlines and remedies differ.

Frequently asked questions
Can I report a leaked video without knowing who uploaded it?
Usually, yes. Give the platform the direct post URL, visible handle, profile link and any account or message identifiers you have; identifying the uploader is not a prerequisite for submitting a location-based abuse report.
Should I keep browser history or device metadata?
It can help establish when you visited a page, but browser history is easy to overwrite and may reveal sensitive material. Preserve the simple event log and report confirmations first, and ask a lawyer about additional forensic preservation if a case is likely.
What if the video is altered or AI-generated?
Describe that it appears altered or synthetic and report it through the platform’s intimate-image or harassment route. The FTC’s NCII guidance covers real, digitally altered and AI-generated intimate imagery, but eligibility still depends on the platform and the facts of the post.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a report if I am outside the United States?
Yes, you can use the host platform’s abuse process wherever you are. The FTC’s 48-hour rule and its escalation route are U.S.-specific, so consult local regulators or legal advisers for other jurisdictions.
What details should I avoid putting in a public takedown request?
Do not post the intimate video, its download link or unnecessary personal information in a public forum. Submit details through the platform’s private reporting form and keep your evidence log private.
Is a screenshot enough to prove who uploaded the video?
Not necessarily. A screenshot records what was visible at a moment; account records, platform logs and message metadata may require the platform or a legal process to authenticate.
What should a friend do if the victim is in immediate danger?
Prioritize immediate safety and contact local emergency services. Evidence collection and takedown reporting should wait until the person is safe.
