The first specification to check is usable GPU memory: dedicated VRAM on Windows laptops or unified memory on Apple Silicon. It determines which model can load without immediately spilling into slower system memory. As a practical guide, target 8GB of VRAM for small 3B–8B models, 12–16GB for comfortable 8B–14B use, and at least 24GB for 20B–30B models. Pair that with 16GB system RAM for experimentation, 32GB for daily use, and 32–64GB for heavier workloads. Storage, CPU instruction support, cooling and driver compatibility then decide how many models you can keep installed and how consistently fast they run.
Which laptop specification matters most for local AI?
Memory capacity is the hard limit. A model’s weights, its context window, the runtime and your other applications all need space at the same time. If the model does not fit in fast GPU or unified memory, the software may offload layers to ordinary RAM or storage, which can make responses dramatically slower.

Compare laptops in this order:
- Usable VRAM or unified memory: confirm the amount in the exact configuration, not just the GPU family name.
- Memory bandwidth and sustained power: these influence how quickly a model can be read and processed once it fits.
- System RAM: it holds offloaded layers, the operating system, the model runtime and applications.
- Cooling and power limits: a thin chassis can throttle after several minutes of generation.
- Software support: check the operating-system architecture, driver stack and backend support before buying.
Quantized models reduce the memory required per parameter, allowing a larger model to fit, but lower precision can reduce quality or limit numerical stability. Context length, model architecture, drivers and whatever else is running can change the result, so the tier guidance below is a starting point rather than a guarantee.
How much VRAM do I need for 4B, 9B, 12B or 27B models?
Use the largest model that fits with headroom for the runtime and your intended context length. NVIDIA’s current guidance pairs the following memory tiers with representative model sizes:

| Target use | Recommended accelerator memory | Example models in the cited guidance | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experimentation and small chats | 6–8GB dedicated VRAM, or 16GB system memory for CPU/unified-memory use | Qwen 3.5 4B; roughly 3B–8B class | Good for short conversations, coding assistance and learning local-model tools. |
| Comfortable daily assistant | 12–16GB VRAM | Qwen 3.5 9B or Gemma 4 12B; roughly 8B–14B class | More room for useful context and fewer compromises from offloading. |
| Larger local models | 24GB or more VRAM, or a large unified-memory configuration | Qwen 3.6 27B and other 20B–30B models | Suitable for heavier reasoning and longer prompts when the software supports the model. |
| Very large experiments | 48GB or more, usually in a multi-GPU workstation, or 64GB or more of unified memory | Some 30B–70B experiments | A laptop becomes a substantial compromise in cost, weight, heat and sustained speed. |
The model labels are not a promise that every quantization or context setting will fit. A 12B model in a high-bit format can require more memory than a 14B model in a lower-bit format. Leave several gigabytes uncommitted for the operating system, the application and the runtime’s temporary buffers rather than sizing the laptop to the model’s advertised parameter count alone.
Why does the same GPU name perform differently in different laptops?
Laptop versions can have different VRAM capacities and power limits even when they share a GPU family name. Check the exact memory capacity, the configured wattage and the manufacturer’s cooling design. A lower-power implementation may sustain less throughput than a thicker system with the same nominal GPU, especially during long generations or batch jobs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow much system RAM is enough?
System RAM remains necessary even when a model is intended to run on the GPU. It stores the operating system, browser tabs, model files being loaded, CPU-side layers and any part of the model that does not fit in VRAM.
| Workload | Practical RAM target | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Light experimentation | 16GB | Matches LM Studio’s minimum recommendation for Windows and its 16GB-plus recommendation for Apple Silicon. |
| Regular local assistant, coding and document work | 32GB | Leaves room for the model runtime, a larger context and normal desktop applications. |
| Professional work, image generation or frequent offloading | 32–64GB | Provides headroom when models, data and creative applications compete for memory. |
| Large-model experimentation | 64GB or more | Useful for unified-memory systems and models that cannot remain entirely in a laptop GPU. |
Lenovo places 16–32GB at the light-work level and 32–64GB for professional work. HP similarly recommends 32–64GB for local AI models and image generation. These are capacity recommendations, not speed benchmarks; no controlled laptop token-per-second result is established by those figures.
How does Apple unified memory change the calculation?
Apple Silicon uses one memory pool for the CPU and GPU. There is no separate VRAM number to add: the configured unified-memory capacity is the practical ceiling for the model, macOS and every open application together. A 16GB machine cannot dedicate all 16GB to a model without starving the operating system.

LM Studio supports M1 through M4 chips and recommends at least 16GB of RAM. For a comfortable local assistant, choose a larger unified-memory configuration rather than assuming a fast chip can compensate for insufficient capacity. Compare total memory and memory bandwidth, then reserve headroom for macOS and your chosen context length.
Unified memory can make a large model possible in a compact system, but fitting it does not guarantee desktop-GPU-like speed. The chip’s memory bandwidth, sustained thermals, quantization and the backend implementation still matter.
Does the CPU matter for local AI?
The CPU is secondary when the model fits in a supported GPU, but it still determines compatibility and how tolerable CPU-only inference is. Small models can run entirely on the CPU, yet generation is substantially slower than keeping the working layers in GPU memory.
On 64-bit Windows, LM Studio requires AVX2 support. Confirm that instruction set before buying an older or low-end machine. For any backend, verify that the intended GPU driver stack is supported by the current build of LM Studio, Ollama or llama.cpp; a powerful GPU that the runtime cannot access behaves like an unsupported device.
- Choose a recent multi-core CPU if you expect CPU-only fallback, model conversion or frequent file processing.
- Do not trade away VRAM for a slightly faster CPU when your goal is larger models; capacity is usually the first failure point.
- Check sustained performance reviews or manufacturer power information rather than relying only on a processor’s peak boost frequency.
How much SSD storage should a local-AI laptop have?
Storage controls how many models, quantizations and datasets you can keep locally. Lenovo lists a 512GB SSD as a light-use starting point and a 1TB primary SSD plus additional storage for working data-science workloads. HP lists 1TB or more for local AI models and image generation.

A 512GB drive can fill quickly after the operating system, applications, several quantized models, caches and personal files are counted. A 1TB NVMe SSD is the more practical baseline for a daily local assistant; choose additional internal or external capacity if you keep multiple model families, image checkpoints or datasets. Keep free space available for downloads and temporary files so an update or model conversion does not fail at the end of the drive.
Do NPU TOPS ratings replace GPU VRAM?
No. NPU ratings target specific on-device features, not the general memory requirement of a local large language model. HP’s Copilot+ minimums call for a 40-plus TOPS NPU and 16GB of RAM, while its guidance for substantive local AI models and image generation continues to emphasize a dedicated GPU with plenty of VRAM and 32–64GB of system memory.
Treat an NPU as an additional accelerator whose usefulness depends on application support. It does not turn a laptop with insufficient VRAM or unified memory into a 27B-class machine, and TOPS figures from different vendors are not a substitute for checking model and backend compatibility.
What laptop tiers make sense for different local-AI workloads?
| Tier | Target hardware | Best fit | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 8GB VRAM or 16GB system/unified memory; 512GB SSD minimum | 3B–8B models such as Qwen 3.5 4B, short chats and tool learning | Limited context, multitasking and model choice. |
| Daily-use | 12–16GB VRAM, 32GB RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD | 8B–14B models such as Qwen 3.5 9B or Gemma 4 12B | Large models still require quantization or offloading. |
| Large-model laptop | 24GB or more VRAM, or a high-capacity unified-memory system; 32–64GB RAM | 20B–30B models such as Qwen 3.6 27B | Higher price, weight, heat and battery drain. |
| Workstation class | 48GB or more VRAM with multiple GPUs, or 64GB-plus unified memory | Some 30B–70B experimentation | Laptop portability and efficiency are substantially reduced. |
These tiers are guidance, not guarantees. Quantization level, context length, architecture, drivers, thermal limits and other running applications can move a model from “fits” to “does not fit.”
How can I check whether a specific laptop will run my model?
- Identify the exact configuration. Record the GPU model, dedicated VRAM, configured power limit, system RAM, SSD capacity and operating system. Do not rely on a retailer title that omits memory details.
- Check the model’s file size and quantization. Use the intended format and add headroom for runtime buffers and your desired context. A file that is barely smaller than available memory is not a comfortable fit.
- Confirm backend support. Check the current LM Studio, Ollama or llama.cpp documentation for your GPU driver, operating-system architecture and acceleration path. On Windows x64, verify AVX2.
- Close competing applications for the first test. Browsers, image tools and virtual machines consume RAM or unified memory and can trigger offloading.
- Load a conservative context first. Start with a short context, observe memory use and increase it gradually. Longer context consumes additional working memory.
- Test a sustained session. Generate multiple replies for several minutes while watching memory, clock speeds and temperatures. A brief launch test can hide thermal throttling.
What happens when a model does not fit in VRAM?
The runtime may keep some layers in GPU memory and place the rest in system RAM. This can make a model technically usable but much slower because data must cross the system bus repeatedly. If RAM also runs out, the operating system may page to storage, producing severe stalls.

Reduce the model’s quantization, shorten the context, close other applications or select a smaller model before accepting heavy offloading. Lower-bit quantization is a deliberate trade-off: it saves memory and can enable a larger parameter count, while potentially reducing output quality or numerical precision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What cooling and power details should I inspect?
Local inference is a sustained workload rather than a short benchmark burst. Look for a chassis with adequate heat-pipe or vapor-chamber capacity, unobstructed intake and a power adapter sized for the configured GPU. Manufacturer power limits and cooling design often explain why two laptops with similar component names behave differently after several minutes.
- Use the laptop on a hard surface, not bedding or a blocked vent.
- Expect higher fan noise and lower battery life during GPU inference.
- When comparing models, prioritize sustained wattage and cooling evidence over a small difference in peak boost clocks.
What should I verify before buying?
- Exact dedicated VRAM or total unified-memory capacity.
- At least 16GB RAM for experimentation; 32GB is a stronger daily-use target.
- A 1TB NVMe SSD if you plan to keep several models and datasets.
- AVX2 support on Windows x64 systems intended for LM Studio.
- Current driver and backend support for the GPU or Apple chip.
- Configured GPU power limit, cooling design and return policy.
- Whether the memory is upgradeable; soldered RAM cannot be expanded later.
- Enough ports or supported external storage for model archives and backups.
What do official examples imply about model size and memory?
Android Developers’ local-model documentation gives concrete, model-specific examples: Gemma E4B is listed with 12GB of total RAM and 4GB of storage, while Gemma 26B MoE is listed with 24GB of RAM and 17GB of storage. Those figures illustrate why parameter count, architecture and file format must be checked together; they are not universal laptop requirements for every implementation.

Similarly, LM Studio’s stated minimums—at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM and at least 16GB of system RAM for Windows use—describe a workable starting point, not a promise of fast performance for every model.
How should I balance capacity, speed and portability?
Start with the largest model class you genuinely need, then buy enough memory to run it with headroom. If your work is mostly short chats and coding, a 12–16GB GPU with 32GB RAM is a balanced target. If you need 27B-class reasoning, prioritize 24GB-plus VRAM or a large unified-memory configuration even if that means a heavier chassis. For occasional experiments, a smaller laptop with external storage may be more sensible than paying for workstation-class memory that remains unused.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run local AI models without a dedicated GPU?
Yes, small models can run on a CPU or Apple unified memory, but generation is generally much slower than keeping the model in supported GPU memory. Make sure the runtime supports your processor; LM Studio requires AVX2 on x64 Windows.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will adding more RAM make a laptop GPU faster?
Additional RAM helps prevent crashes and gives the runtime room for offloaded layers, but it does not increase the GPU’s VRAM bandwidth. If the model already fits comfortably in VRAM, more system RAM usually changes multitasking headroom rather than generation speed.
Is a 16GB laptop enough for a 12B model?
It may work with an appropriately quantized file and a modest context, especially on a unified-memory system, but the operating system and applications share that pool. A 12–16GB dedicated GPU plus 32GB system RAM is a more reliable daily-use configuration.
Why does a model run fast at first and then slow down?
Sustained inference can trigger thermal or power throttling, and memory pressure can cause offloading or paging. Test for several minutes, monitor temperatures and clocks, and use a better-cooled power profile or a smaller context if performance falls.
