Langfuse helps you trace agent calls by recording an LLM application’s work as a structured trace: model generations, tool calls, retrieval and other steps can be inspected together rather than inferred from the final answer. Individual steps are recorded as observations, and related traces can be grouped into a session for a multi-turn interaction. The practical benefit is a clearer account of what your application did during a run—not a guarantee that Langfuse will diagnose every problem automatically.
What does Langfuse trace, and why is that more useful than the final answer?
An answer alone is an incomplete record of an LLM application’s behavior. If it is wrong, slow or unexpectedly expensive, the final text may not reveal whether the cause was a model response, a tool, retrieval or another part of the workflow. Langfuse’s trace model provides a place to inspect those steps and their relationships for one request or operation.

Its overview says a trace can include prompts, model output, token usage, latency, tool calls and retrieval activity.
This is the distinction between recording a result and observing a process. A log line that says an answer was returned may be useful, but a trace can connect that answer to the application steps that preceded it. The more accurately you instrument the workflow, the more useful that account is for debugging, understanding latency and reviewing usage.

How do traces, observations and sessions fit together?
Langfuse organizes activity at three levels. Observations are individual steps, a trace groups steps for a request or operation, and a session can connect multiple traces from one broader interaction, such as a multi-turn chat.
Observations describe individual work
An observation is a recorded unit of activity. It may represent a model generation, an agent’s decision-making component, a tool call, a retrieval operation or custom application work. Observations can be nested, which helps represent a workflow in which one component calls another.
Langfuse uses observation types to distinguish different kinds of work:
generation: an AI model generation.agent: a component that decides application flow and may use tools.tool: an action such as a function or API call.retriever: a retrieval operation.chain: a link between steps.span: a generic unit of work with a duration.event: a discrete event.
These labels are a vocabulary for separating model activity from the rest of the application. They are useful only when the instrumentation records the work your team needs to inspect; a tool that was never captured will not appear in the trace just because the run has a trace ID.
A trace gives one operation its context
A trace groups observations belonging to a single request or operation. When its observations are connected appropriately, you can follow the run through the application rather than treating each model call or tool invocation as an isolated event. That makes a trace a more useful unit for investigating an individual agent run than the final response alone.

A session connects related traces
A session can group traces that belong to the same user interaction. In a multi-turn conversation, pass a stable sessionId across the relevant observations so Langfuse can group them, including their enclosing traces. Langfuse’s documentation specifies that identifiers must be US-ASCII strings shorter than 200 characters; longer identifiers are dropped.

Start by deciding what one trace should represent in your application, then choose an instrumentation route that fits the stack you already use. Make sure you capture the meaningful boundaries around the model, tools and retrieval rather than relying on a single record of the final answer.
- Map the run you want to understand. Identify the request or operation that should form one trace. List the model generations, agent decisions, tool calls, retrieval steps and other work whose order or timing could matter when investigating a result.
- Choose a capture route. Langfuse documents Python and JavaScript SDKs, integrations for frameworks and libraries, OpenTelemetry, and an LLM gateway such as LiteLLM. Its getting-started material also covers OpenAI clients, Vercel AI SDK, LangChain and custom tracing. If the application already emits OpenTelemetry spans, the official guide points to the OpenTelemetry route.
- Initialize the chosen integration. Follow the current instructions for the relevant SDK, framework or capture route. Package names and initialization steps can change, so use the current Langfuse documentation rather than copying an old setup example.
- Represent the workflow’s steps. Capture model work as generations and distinguish it from agent, tool and retriever activity where those operations occur. Add the observations needed to show how the steps relate; use a generic span or event where the work does not fit a more specific type.
- Connect the run to the interaction. For multi-turn conversations, propagate a stable
sessionIdacross relevant observations. Choose an identifier that meets Langfuse’s documented format and length requirements. - Check what was actually recorded. Inspect a representative run and confirm that the expected operations appear and are connected in the intended order. If a tool or retrieval step is absent, review whether that code path is instrumented; do not infer that it happened from the model’s final response.
- Account for process shutdowns. Langfuse describes SDK events as queued locally and sent asynchronously in batches. For short-lived processes, make sure the application’s lifecycle gives telemetry an opportunity to flush before it exits; the exact implementation should follow the current SDK guidance.
This sequence is a workflow, not a universal code recipe: the appropriate package, setup and flush behavior depend on the integration and runtime you select. Langfuse’s documentation is the source for current implementation details.
Which Langfuse instrumentation route should I use?
Use the route that captures the application’s real work with the least unnecessary custom instrumentation. Langfuse documents several options, but the available information does not establish a neutral performance or effort benchmark across them.
| Route | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Python or JavaScript SDK | Your application can instrument its own code directly. | Current initialization instructions, coverage of tool and retrieval steps, and flush behavior in your runtime. |
| Framework or library integration | Your application uses a supported framework or library, including paths documented for LangChain or Vercel AI SDK. | Which operations the integration captures and where custom observations are still needed. |
| OpenTelemetry | Your application already emits OpenTelemetry spans or you want to use the documented OpenTelemetry capture path. | Whether the spans you emit represent the agent, model, tool and retrieval boundaries you need to inspect. |
| LLM gateway such as LiteLLM | Your calls pass through a gateway for which Langfuse documents capture. | Whether gateway records cover the application steps outside the model call, such as tool use and retrieval. |
| Custom tracing | You need to record work that a framework integration or gateway does not cover. | How to represent the missing operation and connect it to the correct trace using current documentation. |
The key distinction is coverage, not a general ranking of integrations. A gateway may capture a model request while leaving application-side tool orchestration outside that record; a framework integration may automate some capture but still require attention to custom code. Review an actual run and fill the gaps that prevent you from answering your debugging questions.

Should I use Langfuse Cloud or self-host it?
Langfuse documents both Cloud and self-hosting, and says the instrumentation code is the same for both. The choice therefore centers on deployment and data-residency requirements, alongside the operational responsibilities of the deployment you select.
The setup guide provides regional Cloud base URLs, including EU, US, Japan and HIPAA-specific endpoints. Those names are not a substitute for confirming current availability or whether a particular endpoint and deployment satisfy your organization’s requirements. Verify the current regional options and your organization’s data-residency rules before sending trace data.
Before enabling tracing, decide what information your application will record and whether that information is suitable for your chosen deployment. Prompts and model output can be part of the trace, so the content of telemetry matters as much as where it is sent. The available product information establishes that these capture and deployment options exist; it does not settle your organization’s privacy, security or compliance review.
Will tracing slow down my application?
Langfuse says its SDKs queue events locally, send tracing data asynchronously in the background and flush events in batches. Its observability overview answers its latency FAQ by saying tracing does not affect application response time; treat that as the vendor’s description of product behavior, not as an independently measured guarantee for every application or runtime.

Begin with a concrete question about one run, then use the trace to narrow down which recorded step could answer it. The trace is most useful when you distinguish the application’s model activity from tool and retrieval work instead of treating the response as one indivisible event.
Recommended Free Tools
- The answer is wrong: inspect the captured prompt, model output, retrieval and tool observations to see which recorded inputs and actions preceded the answer. A trace helps expose evidence; it does not automatically determine which component is at fault.
- The run is slow: use the recorded observations and their durations to identify where time was spent. A trace can show a slow step without proving why that step was slow.
- The run uses more tokens or cost than expected: inspect the recorded token and cost information alongside the relevant generations. Confirm that the trace includes the calls needed to explain the total you are investigating.
- The workflow is hard to follow: check whether the observations are correctly represented and related. If important application work is missing, add instrumentation at the relevant boundary rather than expecting the final generation to reconstruct it.
This is a diagnostic loop: ask a specific question, locate the observation that could answer it, and then improve instrumentation if the needed evidence is absent. Over time, consistent trace structure makes runs easier to compare, but the source material does not establish that tracing alone supplies an evaluation or fixes an agent.
What should I verify before relying on Langfuse traces?
A trace is only as informative as the events your application sends and the operating assumptions around them. Before using traces as a basis for debugging or operational decisions, verify the parts that can make the record incomplete or misleading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Langfuse trace prove what the model was thinking?
No. A trace records the application events and model interactions that were instrumented; it is not proof of hidden internal reasoning. Treat it as a record of observable inputs, outputs and workflow steps, not an explanation of the model’s private thought process.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Langfuse automatically tell me why an agent gave a bad answer?
A trace can make relevant prompts, generations, retrieval and tool activity available for inspection, but deciding which component caused the failure remains an engineering task. If the responsible step was not instrumented, the trace cannot reconstruct it after the fact.
Can I use Langfuse traces as an evaluation dataset?
The product details described here establish tracing, sessions and usage tracking, but do not establish that every recorded trace is automatically a validated evaluation example. Decide separately what makes a run suitable for evaluation and how it should be labeled.
Are Langfuse’s latency claims independently benchmarked?
The statement that tracing does not affect application response time is Langfuse’s own product claim. The available materials do not provide an independent benchmark, so validate behavior in the runtime and workload that matter to you.
