Verdict: Krix’s Series MX is a purpose-built cinema system for a dedicated room, not a conventional living-room speaker package. The MX-20 Mk2 combines high sensitivity, horn loading, flush installation behind an acoustically transparent screen, and separate passive subwoofer modules to pursue cinema-level dynamics. It is a strong fit if you can build a false wall, provide substantial amplification, and have a dealer or integrator design the room. It is a poor fit if you need freestanding speakers, published retail pricing, or a quick plug-and-play upgrade. Current independent measurements, distortion graphs, listening tests, and verified retail listings are not established here, so this review focuses on the published design, specifications, and installation consequences.

What is the Krix Series MX system?

The current Series MX family consists of the MX-20 Mk2, MX-30i, and MX-40i. Krix positions the range as a cinema architecture rather than a collection of ordinary cabinet speakers. The left, centre, and right (LCR) modules and two passive subwoofer modules are installed in a constructed false or baffle wall, then hidden by an acoustically transparent screen.

The installation manual describes an infinite-baffle-wall concept: the speaker faces are flush with the wall, while the picture appears to be the source of dialogue and effects through the screen. Krix says the MX-20 Mk2 adds a new 12-inch low-frequency driver, a patented constant-directivity horn with a one-inch compression driver, and increased power handling for greater dynamics and clarity. The published MX-20 specification sheet, however, lists a 10-inch paper-cone woofer for the LCR module; that apparent difference means the Mk2 description and the specification document should be reconciled with a dealer before ordering.

Krix’s installation manual summarizes the goal as: “The Series MX range delivers the visual experience and dynamic impact of real cinema at home.” That is an architectural and performance objective, not an independent laboratory result.

Is Krix MX worth it for a dedicated home theater?

It can be worth it when your priority is behind-screen cinema presentation and high output, and you are prepared for construction and system integration. The high-sensitivity LCR design reduces the amplifier power needed to reach a given level compared with many lower-sensitivity hi-fi speakers, while the dedicated passive subwoofer modules provide a planned low-frequency section. The trade-off is that the system makes sense only when the room, screen, wall, amplification, and calibration are designed together.

Reasons to consider it

  • Sound from the image: LCR modules sit behind an acoustically transparent screen, preserving correct dialogue and effects placement.
  • Cinema-oriented output: The MX-20 LCR sensitivity is published at 97 dB, with a recommended 100–500 W RMS amplifier range.
  • Integrated bass architecture: The system includes passive subwoofer modules intended for the same false-wall installation.
  • Controlled installation: Flush mounting and absorbent material at the speaker front are intended to limit reflections behind the screen.
  • Dealer support: Krix Distribution describes system-design and integration guidance, local technical support, and integrator training.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • You cannot dedicate space to a false or baffle wall.
  • You want visible, freestanding speakers that can be moved between rooms.
  • Your amplifier and electrical plan cannot support the recommended power ranges.
  • You need a known street price, independently measured distortion, or a verified online listing before deciding; those details are not established in the available documentation.

How does the behind-screen installation work?

The speakers are not simply placed behind a screen; they become part of the room’s front wall. The false wall holds the LCR and passive subwoofer modules, leaves the speaker faces flush with the wall plane, and supports the acoustically transparent screen in front.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

False-wall and screen arrangement

The manual’s modular approach is intended to minimize the depth taken from the room compared with a deeper, fully enclosed baffle construction. The exact wall depth, framing dimensions, screen frame, and ventilation requirements are project-specific and are not stated in the published MX-20 figures. A dealer or integrator should draw the wall and screen together rather than treating the screen as a later accessory.

Why acoustic treatment is placed at the front

Krix specifies absorbent material on the speaker front to reduce reflections in the space behind the screen. That treatment is part of the installation concept; it is not a substitute for broader room treatment at the side walls, ceiling, or rear wall. The supplied documents do not prescribe a complete acoustic-treatment package, so those surfaces require a separate room-design decision.

What the screen must do

The screen must pass sound from the LCR modules while displaying the image. The MX-20 specification sheet gives minimum screen guidance of 105 inches in 16:9 or 130 inches in 21:9. These are minimum guidance figures, not a promise that every room will suit those sizes; viewing distance, projector brightness, seating layout, and the available wall width still determine the final choice.

What are the published MX-20 Mk2 specifications?

The MX-20 documentation describes an 8-ohm, high-sensitivity LCR system with a separate high-power passive subwoofer section. Values below come from Krix’s MX-20 Specifications Sheet; amplifier ranges are recommended RMS ranges, not mandatory outputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Element Published specification Installation implication
MX-20 LCR frequency range 40 Hz–20 kHz Use the dedicated subwoofer modules and bass management for the lowest effects frequencies.
MX-20 LCR sensitivity 97 dB (2.83 V/1 m) High sensitivity supports cinema-level output with less amplifier power than many lower-sensitivity designs.
MX-20 LCR impedance 8 ohms Confirm that every amplifier channel is stable at the intended load.
MX-20 LCR amplifier recommendation 100–500 W RMS Choose amplification, wiring, and protection for the actual listening distance and target level.
MX-20 LCR drivers One 255 mm (10-inch) paper-cone woofer; 26 mm (1-inch) doped-fabric dome coupled to a 90×40 short-throw waveguide The horn/waveguide approach is intended to provide controlled directivity and high output.
MX-20 subwoofer frequency range 25 Hz–200 Hz The passive modules extend the system below the LCR’s published 40 Hz lower limit.
MX-20 subwoofer sensitivity 96 dB Still requires an amplifier channel or channels sized for the subwoofer recommendation.
MX-20 subwoofer impedance 8 ohms Check the amplifier’s load capability when multiple modules share channels.
MX-20 subwoofer amplifier recommendation 200–1,400 W RMS Power selection is a major part of the system design rather than an afterthought.
MX-20 LCR module weight 31 kg each Plan two-person handling, structural support, and safe access during installation.
MX-20 subwoofer module weight 45 kg each Framing and lifting provisions must be settled before the wall is closed.

The product description for the MX-20 Mk2 refers to a new 12-inch low-frequency driver, while the specification sheet identifies a 10-inch LCR woofer. Because those statements come from different Krix documents, obtain the current revision and confirm the exact driver before finalizing a design.

How much amplifier power does MX-20 need?

Use the published ranges as a design envelope, then size power for distance, target level, and headroom. Krix’s Home Cinema Design Basics guide uses the 97 dB LCR sensitivity to calculate approximately 160 W at 5 m and 300 W at 7 m to reach 105 dB SPL for the main speakers. Those are guide calculations, not independent laboratory measurements.

Listening distance in Krix’s guide Calculated amplifier power Target and qualification
5 m 160 W Guide calculation to reach 105 dB SPL for the main speakers.
7 m 300 W Guide calculation to reach 105 dB SPL for the main speakers.

These figures do not tell you to buy the largest amplifier automatically. They illustrate why a 97 dB cinema speaker can reach a given level with less power than a typical 88 dB hi-fi speaker at the same distance. Real installations add room gain, seating variation, screen losses, equalization, crest-factor demands, and amplifier headroom. The safe process is to have the integrator calculate channel loading and limiter settings for the actual room.

The subwoofer recommendation is much broader—200 to 1,400 W RMS—because low-frequency effects can demand substantial electrical and mechanical headroom. Confirm whether the planned amplifier drives one module per channel or multiple modules on a channel, and verify the resulting impedance before purchase.

What room and screen size do you need?

The MX-20 is intended for a dedicated cinema whose front wall can accommodate the modules and an acoustically transparent screen. The only explicit size guidance supplied is the minimum screen format; the documents do not publish a universal room-length or room-volume limit.

Screen format MX-20 minimum guidance What still needs design
16:9 105 inches Screen width, seating distance, projector brightness, and front-wall framing.
21:9 130 inches Scope presentation, masking, projector lensing, and seating sightlines.

Use the screen figure as a starting constraint, not as a complete room recipe. Measure the usable front-wall width, reserve space for the false-wall structure and screen frame, and make sure the nearest seats do not sit so close that the screen texture or perforation becomes distracting. Because the LCR and subwoofer modules are heavy, access routes and floor protection matter during construction even when the finished speakers are hidden.

What is the difference between MX-20 Mk2, MX-30i, and MX-40i?

All three belong to the current Series MX family, but the supplied documentation does not provide a complete, like-for-like specification table for the MX-30i and MX-40i. It would be misleading to rank them by output, bass extension, or room size without those figures.

Model What is established What is not stated in the supplied material
MX-20 Mk2 Published LCR and subwoofer specifications, screen minimums, module weights, and amplifier recommendations. The exact relationship between the 12-inch driver description and the 10-inch driver listed on the specification sheet should be confirmed.
MX-30i Identified by Krix as a current Series MX model. Frequency response, sensitivity, impedance, power range, dimensions, weight, and screen guidance are not stated.
MX-40i Identified by Krix as a current Series MX model. Frequency response, sensitivity, impedance, power range, dimensions, weight, and screen guidance are not stated.

For a real selection, compare room length and screen size first, then required output and low-frequency capability, followed by false-wall depth, amplification, dealer support, and calibration. Ask for the current specification sheets for all candidate models so the decision is based on the same revision and measurement conditions.

How should you plan an MX installation?

Plan the room, wall, screen, wiring, amplification, and calibration as one project. The following sequence prevents the most expensive rework.

  1. Measure the room and access path. Record front-wall width, ceiling height, seating distances, door widths, stair turns, and the route for 31 kg LCR and 45 kg subwoofer modules.
  2. Select the screen format and size. Use the MX-20 minimum guidance—105 inches for 16:9 or 130 inches for 21:9—as a floor, then verify sightlines and projector requirements.
  3. Draw the false or baffle wall. Reserve the required module positions, screen frame, service access, acoustic absorption, cable routes, and any equipment ventilation. Krix does not publish one universal wall-depth dimension in the supplied material.
  4. Confirm the exact model revision. In particular, reconcile the MX-20 Mk2’s 12-inch-driver description with the specification sheet’s 10-inch LCR woofer listing.
  5. Specify amplification and signal routing. Use the 100–500 W RMS LCR and 200–1,400 W RMS subwoofer recommendations as the starting envelope, and verify 8-ohm load capability for the chosen channel arrangement.
  6. Install absorbent material behind the screen. Follow the integrator’s treatment plan so the speaker fronts and the cavity behind the screen do not create avoidable reflections.
  7. Mount and secure the modules. Provide structural support and safe lifting procedures before closing the wall; do not rely on the screen frame or finish material to carry speaker weight.
  8. Install the acoustically transparent screen. Check that the image is centered on the LCR layout and that the screen surface does not obstruct the speaker openings.
  9. Calibrate after construction is complete. Set delays, levels, crossover behavior, equalization, and limiter settings only after the screen, seating, and room treatment are in their final positions.

What are the main advantages and limitations?

The strongest advantage is integration: the MX system is designed so the picture, front soundstage, and high-output amplification behave as one cinema installation. The principal limitation is the same integration, because changing rooms or omitting the false wall undermines the design.

Advantages

  • Behind-screen LCR placement keeps voices and effects aligned with the image.
  • 97 dB LCR sensitivity and the published power range support high playback levels in larger rooms when properly designed.
  • The separate 25 Hz–200 Hz passive subwoofer section is specified for substantial amplifier power.
  • Flush mounting and front-wall absorption can reduce visible equipment and reflections in the screen cavity.
  • Krix Distribution offers system-design and integration guidance, local technical support, and integrator training.

Limitations

  • The system requires a dedicated-room build, an acoustically transparent screen, and a false or baffle wall.
  • Heavy modules complicate delivery, handling, and structural support.
  • Amplifier requirements are materially higher than those of many ordinary home hi-fi speakers.
  • Published MX-30i and MX-40i comparison data are not included in the available documents.
  • No current authoritative retail price, independent listening measurement, distortion graph, or verified online listing is established.

Where can you buy or install Krix MX speakers?

A Krix dealer or trained integrator is the best-supported purchasing route. Krix directs buyers to find a dealer, and Krix Distribution describes design assistance, technical support, and integrator training. That route matters because the quote should include the false wall, screen, amplification, wiring, acoustic treatment, installation labor, and calibration—not just speaker modules.

Ask for a written system design that identifies the exact model revision, module count, screen format, amplifier channels, crossover and processing plan, structural requirements, delivery conditions, warranty terms, and commissioning procedure. Current regional stock, pricing, and any online marketplace listing should be verified directly with the dealer because they are not established in the published material used here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you verify before signing an order?

Resolve documentation and project details before construction begins. Use this checklist during the design meeting:

  • Which exact Series MX model and document revision are being quoted?
  • Does the MX-20 Mk2 supplied to your region use the driver configuration described in the current specification sheet?
  • What are the finished false-wall dimensions and service-access provisions?
  • Which acoustically transparent screen, frame, masking system, and projector format are included?
  • How many amplifier channels are required, and what continuous and peak power is available at 8 ohms?
  • How are the passive subwoofer modules wired, protected, and crossed over?
  • What acoustic absorption is installed behind the screen, and what treatment is recommended elsewhere in the room?
  • Who performs calibration, and what measurements and settings are delivered at handover?
  • How will the 31 kg LCR and 45 kg subwoofer modules be moved and secured?
  • What happens if a module needs service after the wall and screen are finished?

What is not yet established about the Series MX range?

The available documentation is sufficient to judge the MX-20’s architecture and published electrical requirements, but not to make a laboratory-style performance or value claim. There is no current authoritative retail price, independent frequency or distortion measurement, verified Amazon listing, or published side-by-side specification set for the MX-30i and MX-40i in the material available here.

That does not make the system unsuitable; it defines what a responsible buyer must obtain from a dealer. Request current regional pricing, complete model-specific data, and an audition or reference installation if comparative listening is important.

Who should choose Krix MX?

Choose it if you are building a dedicated cinema and want the LCR stage hidden behind a large acoustically transparent screen with cinema-style output. The platform is especially logical when the front wall can be designed before construction and when a dealer will coordinate speakers, amplification, screen, treatment, and calibration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a different type of speaker if you need a flexible system for a multipurpose room, cannot modify the front wall, or prefer to select speakers and electronics independently using published independent measurements and retail prices. Series MX is an installation system first and a speaker purchase second.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use MX-20 without an acoustically transparent screen?

The documented architecture places the LCR and passive subwoofer modules in a false wall behind an acoustically transparent screen. Using a solid or absent screen would not follow that behind-screen design, and the supplied material does not describe an alternative freestanding setup.

Does the MX-20 package include the screen and amplifiers?

The published MX-20 figures describe speaker and passive-subwoofer modules plus recommended amplifier ranges; they do not state that a screen, amplifiers, processor, or installation labor is included. Have the dealer itemize each component in the quotation.

Are the MX-30i and MX-40i automatically better for a larger room?

The available documents identify them as current Series MX models but do not publish the comparable sensitivity, frequency, power, or size data needed to make that conclusion. A room-specific design using current model sheets is more reliable than assuming the model number alone determines suitability.

Does 97 dB sensitivity guarantee reference-level playback?

No. Sensitivity is one input to the design calculation. Distance, amplifier headroom, screen and room losses, equalization, bass management, and calibration all affect the level the finished theater can sustain cleanly.

What should I take to a Krix dealer for a first design?

Bring room dimensions, a floor plan, ceiling height, seating distances, preferred 16:9 or 21:9 presentation, projector constraints, and photos of the access route. Also state whether the front wall is new construction or a retrofit so the integrator can assess framing, service access, and module handling.
