Yes, if you will use app scheduling, temperature control or voice commands. The Kogan SmarterHome KASMTSSKTLB is a full-size 1.7-litre stainless-steel kettle with 1,850–2,200W heating, a keep-warm function and controls through the Kogan SmarterHome app. It also works with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Its biggest practical limitation is networking: setup requires a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and 5GHz-only networks are unsupported.

That makes it more useful than a conventional kettle for timed routines and precise drinks, but less convenient if your router hides or combines its bands. Safety features include dry-boil protection, automatic stop after boiling and shutoff when the kettle is lifted. The published evidence points to good value, provided you accept occasional connection friction and an illuminated light bar that some owners dislike.

What is the Kogan SmarterHome KASMTSSKTLB?

The KASMTSSKTLB is Kogan’s connected 1.7L electric kettle, sold under the SmarterHome range. It combines a standard high-power kettle with app-based temperature settings, one-off and recurring schedules, boil notifications and a keep-warm workflow. Google Home and Amazon Alexa support add voice control after the kettle has been paired with the SmarterHome app.

The smart functions are the reason to choose it over an ordinary kettle. If you only press a button to boil water, a conventional model will usually be simpler. If you prepare different drinks at different temperatures, want water ready at a set time or need to start a boil without walking to the kitchen, the connected features have a clear purpose.

What are the Kogan kettle’s specifications?

The core hardware is a large household kettle rather than a compact travel model. Kogan lists dimensions of 21.8 × 23.8 × 27.3cm, a 1.23kg weight, a 73cm power cord and 1,850–2,200W input. CHOICE records the same 1.7L capacity and 1,850–2,200W range, but lists 1.13kg and a 69cm cord. Treat the small weight and cord differences as source-to-source specification variation, not as evidence of different versions.

Specification Published detail What it means
Capacity 1.7L Suitable for several cups or a full household jug; the usable fill level should still follow the markings.
Construction Stainless-steel kettle Metal body with the appearance and durability expected from a full-size appliance.
Dimensions 21.8 × 23.8 × 27.3cm (Kogan) Measure the space beneath cabinets and around the base before buying.
Weight 1.23kg (Kogan); 1.13kg (CHOICE) Published figures differ by 100g.
Power cord 73cm (Kogan); 69cm (CHOICE) Plan for a nearby outlet rather than relying on an extension lead.
Heating power 1,850–2,200W High enough for normal full-size kettle use, subject to the supply and water volume.
Electrical rating 220–240V, 50–60Hz Use it only on a compatible household supply.
Warranty One-year manufacturer warranty Keep the purchase record and check the warranty terms for coverage and exclusions.
CHOICE recorded price $70 A historical recorded price; current pricing can change.

Which smart features do you get?

The app is more than a remote on/off switch. The manual documents temperature controls, scheduled boiling, boil notifications and a keep-warm process. Those functions make the kettle relevant to tea, coffee, infant-formula preparation or any routine where water needs to be near a chosen temperature rather than simply boiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Temperature control

You can select a target temperature in the SmarterHome app instead of waiting for a full boil every time. The evidence does not specify the number or spacing of temperature presets, so do not assume a particular temperature range from the product name alone. Check the options shown by your app version after pairing.

One-off and recurring schedules

A one-time schedule can prepare water for a particular occasion, while a recurring schedule is suited to a daily routine. For example, a morning schedule could have water ready before you enter the kitchen. Scheduling is a convenience feature, not a substitute for checking the kettle’s position, water level and surroundings before leaving it unattended.

Boil notifications

The app can notify you when the heating cycle is complete. CHOICE also records a one-beep reminder from the kettle itself. Notifications depend on the kettle remaining connected to the configured network and the phone receiving app alerts; the published material does not promise delivery when the device is offline.

Keep-warm operation

The manual describes a keep-warm workflow, allowing water to remain at the selected setting after heating. Because the documentation does not state a maximum keep-warm duration, treat the function as a way to avoid immediate reheating rather than an all-day hot-water dispenser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you set up the Kogan SmarterHome kettle?

Pairing is straightforward when your phone and kettle can use the same 2.4GHz network. It becomes difficult on a 5GHz-only network, because the kettle does not support 5GHz. Follow this order so you can isolate a network problem from an appliance problem.

  1. Prepare the network. Confirm that your router broadcasts a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and note its password. If your router uses one name for both bands, use its settings to expose or select the 2.4GHz band during setup.
  2. Install and open the Kogan SmarterHome app. Sign in or create the account required by the app, then allow the permissions it requests for device discovery and notifications.
  3. Place the kettle near the router. Keep the kettle on a firm, flat surface and connect it to the household supply specified for the appliance. A short distance reduces the chance that a weak signal is mistaken for an incorrect password.
  4. Start normal EZ pairing. In the app, choose the option to add a kettle and enter the 2.4GHz network details. Put the kettle into its pairing state using the controls described in the manual, then wait for the app to complete registration.
  5. Use AP mode if EZ pairing fails. The manual documents AP mode as an alternative pairing method. Select AP mode in the app, put the kettle into that mode, connect your phone to the temporary network the app requests, and return to the app to finish configuration.
  6. Test a simple command. Send a temperature or boil command while you are beside the kettle. Confirm that the app reports the change and that the kettle stops as expected before creating schedules.
  7. Add voice control last. After the kettle works in SmarterHome, link the account in Google Home or Amazon Alexa and test a basic voice command. This avoids troubleshooting two integrations at once.

The most common setup mistake is leaving the phone on 5GHz while trying to add a kettle that can only join 2.4GHz. Temporarily separating the bands or connecting the phone to the router’s 2.4GHz network usually removes that ambiguity. The kettle and phone need to be on the same 2.4GHz network during pairing; a phone merely having internet access is not enough.

Can you control it from a phone?

Yes. The Kogan SmarterHome app is the control centre for temperature selection, schedules, boil notifications and the keep-warm workflow. You can use it to start a cycle without standing at the base, provided the kettle is powered, connected and in a safe position.

Remote control does not remove the normal kettle checks. Before starting a cycle, verify that there is sufficient water, the lid is closed as intended, the base is stable and the spout is not aimed at anyone. Keep the app for convenience, not as a reason to run the appliance empty or leave it near combustible material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does it work with Google Home and Amazon Alexa?

The kettle supports both Google Home and Amazon Alexa. The documented arrangement is to pair the kettle in Kogan SmarterHome first, then connect that account to the voice platform. Voice assistants are therefore an additional control layer, not a replacement for the initial 2.4GHz setup.

Voice commands are most useful for starting a preconfigured action or checking a routine without handling the phone. Exact command wording, available temperature controls and the names shown in each assistant can change with app and platform updates, so use the device name and actions presented during linking rather than relying on a memorised phrase.

How safe is the kettle?

The manual and CHOICE record several protective behaviours. Dry-boil protection locks operation until the kettle is refilled, while CHOICE lists automatic stopping after boiling and shutoff when the kettle is lifted from its base. These protections reduce risk but do not replace supervision or correct placement.

  • Never run it empty. Fill it before starting a cycle and respect the kettle’s minimum and maximum markings.
  • Use a firm, flat surface. An unstable base can interfere with the lift shutoff and increases spill risk.
  • Match the supply. The manual specifies 220–240V at 50–60Hz. Do not use it on an incompatible electrical system.
  • Keep the base and cord dry. Position the 69–73cm cord so it cannot be pulled or hang where children can reach it.
  • Allow the cycle to stop. Do not lift, refill or move the kettle while it is actively heating unless the manual’s operating procedure allows it.

Dry-boil protection is particularly useful when a scheduled command is triggered and someone has used the kettle since the last fill. The lockout described by the manual means the appliance should not continue heating indefinitely, but you should still refill it and inspect the setup before trying again.

What is the physical design like?

CHOICE records an external water-level indicator, illuminated power and temperature lights, and a one-beep boil reminder. These are practical touches: the external indicator lets you check the fill without opening the lid, and the lights show that a mode or heating cycle is active.

The illuminated light bar is also the clearest design complaint in the available ownership evidence. One verified customer reported disliking that the light bar remained on. The published material does not establish a user setting that disables it, so buyers sensitive to ambient light should treat that as an unresolved usability concern rather than assume it can be switched off.

How reliable is the KASMTSSKTLB?

There is useful but limited ownership evidence. Kogan’s listing showed a 4.6 rating from 483 ratings at the time it was captured. A verified customer identified as Shane V wrote, “App is good, temp settings great” on 25/08/26. Another verified reviewer said connection was initially difficult and objected to the light bar staying on.

Those comments describe real owner experiences, but they are not controlled reliability tests. They support a balanced conclusion: the app and temperature functions can work well, while first-time networking may require patience. There is no published failure-rate, lifespan or long-term laboratory result in the available material, so it would be excessive to call the kettle exceptionally durable or unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • 2.4GHz-only networking: a 5GHz-only home network cannot pair with the kettle, and band-steering routers can make setup less obvious.
  • Connection friction: at least one verified owner found the initial connection difficult, although AP mode is documented as a fallback.
  • Light-bar behaviour: one owner disliked the light remaining on, and no documented disable control is established.
  • Smart features add dependency: schedules, notifications and voice control rely on the app, network and linked account, whereas a basic kettle has fewer points of failure.
  • Unclear temperature range: the manual confirms temperature controls but the published specifications do not list every preset or the exact minimum and maximum.
  • Price changes: CHOICE recorded $70, but that is not a guaranteed current price.

How does it compare with other 1.7L smart electric kettles?

When comparing alternatives, focus on the network and control details rather than the word “smart.” A competing kettle that supports 5GHz, stores schedules locally or offers a documented light control may be a better fit for a particular home. The following checklist keeps the comparison tied to features that matter in daily use.

Comparison point KASMTSSKTLB Question to ask about an alternative
Wi-Fi bands 2.4GHz required; 5GHz unsupported Does it support 5GHz, or does it also require a separate 2.4GHz network?
Phone control Kogan SmarterHome app Can the app set temperature, start a cycle and report completion?
Scheduling One-off and recurring schedules documented Are schedules retained by the kettle, the cloud service or only the phone?
Keep-warm Workflow documented; duration not stated What temperature range and maximum hold time are specified?
Voice assistants Google Home and Amazon Alexa Which platforms are supported in your region and app version?
Safety Dry-boil protection, auto-stop and lift shutoff recorded Does the manufacturer document all three behaviours?
Capacity and size 1.7L; 21.8 × 23.8 × 27.3cm listed by Kogan Will the body and cord fit your counter and outlet position?
Warranty One year Is the warranty period longer, and what parts are excluded?

For a buyer who values temperature and routines, the Kogan’s feature set is competitive on paper. For a buyer who wants the least technical maintenance, network independence is more important than assistant support, and a non-connected kettle may be the better choice.

What does it cost to own, and what warranty do you get?

CHOICE recorded a $70 price for the kettle, but retail prices are time-dependent and may differ by promotion or region. The published warranty is one year from the manufacturer. The available information does not specify coverage limits, proof-of-purchase requirements or the process for a network-related complaint, so retain your receipt and read the warranty terms supplied with your unit.

How do you troubleshoot common problems?

The app cannot find the kettle

Check that the phone is connected to the same 2.4GHz network you selected for the kettle. Move the kettle closer to the router, restart pairing and use the manual’s AP mode if EZ pairing continues to fail. A 5GHz-only connection will not work.

The kettle appears connected but commands fail

Confirm that the base has power and that the kettle is seated correctly. Test a simple local action, then close and reopen the app. If the router recently changed its password or network name, remove the old device entry and pair it again on 2.4GHz.

The kettle will not start heating

Refill it if dry-boil protection has locked operation, place it on a firm flat surface and check the household supply against the 220–240V, 50–60Hz rating. Do not bypass a protective shutdown; investigate the water level and seating first.

A schedule did not produce a notification

Check that the kettle was powered and online at the scheduled time and that app notifications are enabled on the phone. The documentation describes notifications but does not guarantee alerts when the network or app service is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The light remains on

The available ownership evidence confirms that at least one user found the light bar objectionable. No documented setting establishes that it can be disabled, so contact the manufacturer for the current app or hardware guidance rather than assuming a fault.

Who should buy the Kogan SmarterHome kettle?

Buy it if you have a dependable 2.4GHz network, want temperature-based preparation, and will actually use schedules, notifications or voice control. The 1.7L capacity, high-power heating and multiple safety shutoffs make it suitable for ordinary household use, while the app adds convenience for routines.

Choose a simpler kettle if you do not want account setup, Wi-Fi troubleshooting or app dependence. You should also look elsewhere if your home network cannot provide 2.4GHz, if a permanently illuminated light is unacceptable, or if you need a published temperature range and keep-warm duration before purchase.

Final verdict: is the KASMTSSKTLB worth it?

The Kogan SmarterHome 1.7L kettle is worth considering at a price near CHOICE’s recorded $70 when its smart functions solve a real routine. Its strongest case is the combination of temperature control, scheduled heating, keep-warm operation, notifications and Google Home/Amazon Alexa support in a full-size 1.7L body. Dry-boil protection, automatic stop and lift shutoff provide sensible safety layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its value drops for households with 5GHz-only Wi-Fi or anyone who expects appliance setup to be entirely plug-and-play. The one-year warranty, anecdotal reports of initial connection difficulty and the always-on light-bar complaint should be part of the decision. In short, it is a capable connected kettle for 2.4GHz homes, not a universally easier replacement for a basic electric kettle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Kogan KASMTSSKTLB take to boil a full 1.7L?

No published boil-time figure is provided. Actual time depends on fill volume, starting water temperature, household voltage and the kettle’s 1,850–2,200W operating power, so use the rated wattage as context rather than a guaranteed timer.

Will schedules run if my phone is switched off?

The documentation confirms one-off and recurring schedules but does not state whether they are stored locally in the kettle or executed through the app service. Do not rely on an unattended schedule until you have tested that behaviour on your own network.

Can the light bar be disabled in the app?

A verified owner reported that the light bar remained on, and the available product information does not document a setting to turn it off. Check the current app controls or ask the manufacturer before buying if dark-room operation matters to you.

What does the one-year warranty cover?

The product information establishes a one-year manufacturer warranty but does not list its inclusions, exclusions or claim procedure. Keep proof of purchase and read the warranty document supplied for your region to determine what is covered.
