The Kogan Smarter Home Air Purifier 5S (KASMAPF5SIA) is a large-room smart purifier with an H13 HEPA filter, a claimed 515 m³/h CADR and claimed coverage of 77 m². It offers automatic, sleep, medium and high modes, PM2.5 colour feedback, timers and SmarterHome app control. Those are useful capabilities, but the model is discontinued, and its model-specific replacement filter is a significant ongoing expense.

It is a sensible choice only when you can confirm that KAH13FTR5SA replacement filters are available at a reasonable price. Existing owners can keep using it if the purifier and app work reliably, but anyone buying old stock or a used unit should check filter availability, filter-hour status and physical condition before paying.

What are the Kogan Smarter Home 5S specifications?

The 5S is a floor-standing purifier identified by model number KASMAPF5SIA. Its headline figures come from two different sources: CHOICE lists the claimed CADR, room size, price and filter cost, while Kogan’s 2023 guide lists the electrical, dimensions and noise specifications. CADR and room coverage are manufacturer or listing claims, not results from a matched independent test.

Specification Published value How to interpret it
Filter H13 HEPA Designed to capture fine airborne particles; the guide does not provide a particle-removal percentage for this model.
Claimed CADR 515 m³/h CHOICE listing, accessed 2026; a claimed figure rather than an independently matched test result.
Claimed room coverage 77 m² CHOICE listing and Kogan guide; actual results vary with ceiling height, layout, doors and fan setting.
Dimensions 700 × 310 × 310 mm Approximately 70 cm high with a 31 cm square footprint.
Weight 8.8 kg in Kogan’s guide; about 8.7–8.8 kg in listings Heavy enough to place carefully, but movable by one person.
Rated power 60 W Kogan guide rating; consumption depends on the selected mode and operating time.
Noise specification 56 dB Kogan guide figure; no independent noise measurement was located.
Input 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz The electrical range printed in the guide. It does not by itself confirm plug or regulatory compatibility in every country.
Listed price A$239 CHOICE listing accessed 2026; the model is marked discontinued, so current new-stock pricing may differ.
Replacement filter A$90 listed by CHOICE Model-specific KAH13FTR5SA H13 HEPA filter; live prices and stock can change.

Is the Kogan 5S worth buying?

The answer depends more on filter supply than on the feature list. On paper, a 515 m³/h claimed CADR and 77 m² claimed coverage make the 5S suitable for a large open area, while app control and automatic operation add convenience. However, the discontinued status creates uncertainty over future filters and support, and a A$90 filter can cost more over time than the initial purchase price.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Reasons to consider it

  • The claimed 515 m³/h output is substantial for a domestic tower-style purifier.
  • The H13 HEPA specification, PM2.5 display and automatic mode provide more information and control than a basic fan-and-filter unit.
  • Sleep, medium and high settings let you trade airflow, sound and power use according to the situation.
  • SmarterHome connectivity allows remote control and scheduling after pairing.

Reasons to be cautious

  • CHOICE identifies the model as discontinued, so old stock and used examples may be easier to find than current retail units.
  • The guide warns against third-party filters. If the KAH13FTR5SA becomes unavailable, there is no stated approved substitute in the supplied documentation.
  • Filter timing is inconsistent across published material: the guide uses a 2200-hour indicator, while a Kogan replacement listing recommends replacement every six months and CHOICE calculates an annual A$360 cost using a three-month interval.
  • No independent, side-by-side performance or noise table is available to establish how the 5S compares with current alternatives.

For a discounted unit sold with a verified new filter, those drawbacks may be acceptable. A nearly full-price used unit with an exhausted filter is much harder to justify, because the first replacement can represent a large portion of the purchase cost.

How much room can the 5S actually cover?

The published 77 m² figure is a claim, not a guarantee that every 77 m² home will receive the same cleaning rate. The 515 m³/h CADR is the more useful number for comparing airflow, but room volume matters: a high-ceiling room contains more air than a low-ceiling room of the same floor area, and an open-plan space loses the benefit of a purifier placed behind a wall or closed door.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the claim as a planning ceiling

Think of 77 m² as the maker’s upper coverage claim under unspecified conditions. For bedrooms, studies or other enclosed rooms, the purifier can recirculate treated air through that space more effectively than it can across several separated rooms. In an open plan, place it where air can enter and leave freely rather than in a corner blocked by furniture.

What the CADR does and does not tell you

CADR describes the rate at which filtered air is delivered, not the concentration of pollutants in your home or the time needed to remove every particle. Cooking, open windows, smoke sources and people moving between rooms continually change the air. The 5S guide explicitly says the purifier is not a substitute for normal ventilation, daily vacuuming or a cooking rangehood.

How loud and power-hungry is the Kogan 5S?

Kogan specifies 56 dB and 60 W, but those are product ratings rather than independent observations of every mode. A high fan setting will normally move more air and can sound louder than sleep mode; the documentation does not give a separate decibel or watt figure for each setting.

Interpreting the 56 dB figure

Use 56 dB as a reference for the published maximum or operating specification, not as a promise that the purifier will be inaudible beside a bed. If quiet operation is important, test the sleep setting in the intended room and listen for fan or vibration noise after placing the unit on a hard, level surface. There is no independent noise test in the available evidence, so claims that it is quieter than a particular competing model would be unsupported.

Estimating electricity use

The 60 W rating equals 0.06 kW when the unit is drawing its rated power. Running continuously at that level would use about 1.44 kWh per day (0.06 kW × 24 hours), but actual use should be lower or different when the fan cycles in Auto or runs at Sleep or Mid. Multiply your electricity tariff by the measured kWh from a plug-in meter for a household-specific figure.

What modes and indicators does the 5S provide?

The control panel offers Auto, Sleep, Mid and High modes. A PM2.5 indicator changes from blue to yellow to red as the displayed air-quality band worsens; the colours are an at-a-glance indication, not a laboratory measurement of every pollutant.

Auto mode

Auto is intended to adjust operation in response to the purifier’s particle reading. It is convenient when conditions change during the day, although the guide does not publish the fan-speed thresholds or a calibration accuracy for the PM2.5 sensor.

Sleep, Mid and High

Sleep prioritises low-disruption operation, Mid provides an intermediate setting and High maximises fan output. Use High after an indoor particle event such as cooking, then reduce the setting when the indicator and room conditions allow; keep the rangehood operating while cooking because the purifier is not a replacement for it.

Timer and additional functions

The shut-off timer can be set from two to 24 hours. A dedicated button selects UV and anion functions. The documentation identifies these controls but does not provide independent evidence that either option improves outcomes beyond the particle filtration supplied by the H13 filter, so treat them as optional features rather than a reason to pay a premium.

How do you connect the 5S to the SmarterHome app?

The guide describes three pairing paths: AP, EZ and Bluetooth. Exact on-screen labels can change as the app is updated, but the general process is to install the SmarterHome app, sign in, add the purifier, put the appliance into pairing mode and complete the network instructions shown by the app.

  1. Install the SmarterHome app on your phone and allow the permissions it requests for device discovery and local network access.
  2. Place the purifier near your wireless router during setup, then power it on.
  3. Choose the add-device option and select the air-purifier category or the detected 5S.
  4. Select AP, EZ or Bluetooth pairing as prompted. AP and EZ modes may require you to follow a temporary network or flashing-indicator instruction; Bluetooth pairing uses the phone’s nearby-device connection.
  5. Enter your home-network details when requested and wait for the app to report completion before moving the purifier to its final position.
  6. Rename the device and test a basic command, such as changing from Auto to Sleep, while you are still beside the purifier.

If pairing fails

  • Move the phone and purifier close to the router and repeat the selected pairing mode from the beginning.
  • Check that the phone is connected to the network the app expects, and disable a VPN or cellular hand-off temporarily if the app cannot discover the appliance.
  • If one method fails, return to the add-device screen and try another of the documented AP, EZ or Bluetooth paths.
  • Use the physical controls while troubleshooting; the purifier does not become unusable simply because app setup is incomplete.

The available documentation describes connectivity but does not establish a guaranteed uptime level, cloud-service lifespan or compatibility with every current router configuration. For that reason, treat app control as a convenience rather than the only way to operate the purifier.

Which replacement filter fits KASMAPF5SIA?

The model-specific replacement is the Kogan KAH13FTR5SA H13 HEPA filter. Kogan lists it for the Smart Purifier 5S, and a Big W listing identifies the same model number as compatible with the Smart Air Purifier 5S. Search using the complete code “KAH13FTR5SA” or the purifier model “KASMAPF5SIA” so that a visually similar cartridge is not mistaken for a compatible one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kogan’s guide says not to use third-party filters. A generic filter that appears to fit may have different dimensions, sealing, media or airflow resistance, and the documentation does not approve one. Confirm that the seller names KAH13FTR5SA and that the listing is for the 5S before ordering.

How often should you replace the filter, and what will it cost?

The purifier displays a filter reminder after 2200 hours and the guide instructs you to replace the filter at that point. A Kogan replacement listing recommends replacement once every six months, while CHOICE’s ownership calculation uses a three-month interval and a A$90 filter price, producing A$360 per year. These figures are not interchangeable promises: use the unit’s indicator and the current manufacturer guidance, then adjust for dust load, smoke, pets and operating hours.

Planning basis Replacement frequency Illustrative annual filter spend Qualification
CHOICE calculation Every three months A$360 (four × A$90) CHOICE listing accessed 2026; a cost calculation, not a universal service interval.
Kogan replacement listing Every six months About A$180 (two × A$90) Uses the listed A$90 price; live pricing and stock may change.
On-device reminder After 2200 operating hours Depends on the price and number of reminders in a year Instruction in Kogan’s 2023 guide; 2200 hours is roughly three months of continuous operation.

How to replace and reset the filter

  1. Switch the purifier off and disconnect it from the power outlet.
  2. Open the filter compartment as shown in the Kogan guide and remove the used cartridge without shaking dust into the room.
  3. Install a new KAH13FTR5SA filter in the orientation indicated by the housing and close the compartment securely.
  4. Reconnect power and turn the unit on.
  5. Hold the mode button for seven seconds. The display should reset to “Filter 100%.”

Do not reset the percentage merely to clear a warning while keeping an exhausted filter installed. The reset starts a new service counter; it does not clean or renew the filter media.

What maintenance and safety precautions matter?

Keep the air inlet and outlet clear, place the purifier upright on a stable surface, and follow the guide’s cleaning instructions for the exterior and sensor area. Do not wet the filter or operate the appliance with the filter compartment improperly fitted. The documentation’s most important limitation is explicit: “This air purifier is not a substitute for normal ventilation, daily vacuuming, or cooking rangehoods.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Continue ventilating rooms when outdoor conditions and the activity require it.
  • Use a rangehood that vents appropriately while cooking; do not rely on the purifier to capture all cooking moisture and gases.
  • Vacuum floors, upholstery and other dust reservoirs because filtration cannot remove settled particles until they become airborne.
  • Keep clearance around the purifier so the claimed airflow is not obstructed.
  • Disconnect power before opening the filter compartment or carrying out cleaning.

The guide’s 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz input rating covers a broad electrical range, but travellers still need the correct plug arrangement and should check local electrical requirements before using the unit abroad.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What should you check before buying a discontinued or used 5S?

Because CHOICE marks the KASMAPF5SIA as discontinued, condition and consumables matter as much as the sticker price. Ask the seller for the exact model number, a photo of the filter-status display and confirmation that the unit pairs or operates from its physical controls.

  1. Confirm identity: verify that the label says KASMAPF5SIA and that the included or available replacement is KAH13FTR5SA.
  2. Check filter status: a low percentage or a warning means you should budget for a replacement immediately.
  3. Inspect the housing: look for cracked plastic, damaged controls, blocked grilles or signs of moisture exposure.
  4. Test every mode: switch through Auto, Sleep, Mid and High, operate the timer and confirm that the PM2.5 indicator responds.
  5. Test connectivity separately: app pairing is useful but should not be treated as proof that the fan, sensor or filter seal is healthy.
  6. Verify supply before paying: search current listings for the exact KAH13FTR5SA code and confirm delivery to your location.

If the replacement filter cannot be sourced, the purifier’s claimed coverage and smart features lose much of their practical value. A cheaper purchase price does not compensate for an appliance that must be run with an overdue or unsuitable filter.

How does the 5S compare with newer purifiers?

The available evidence supports a comparison framework, not a ranked test. There is no matched independent table measuring the 5S against current competitors for CADR, sound, energy use, sensor accuracy or app reliability, so any claim that it is faster, quieter or more efficient than a named model would go beyond the published evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor What is established for the 5S What to verify on another model
Airflow 515 m³/h claimed CADR Whether the competing figure is independently tested and measured under the same standard.
Coverage 77 m² claimed area Room-volume assumptions, ceiling height and whether the maker states an air-change rate.
Noise 56 dB specification Mode-specific measurements and test distance.
Running cost A$90 listed replacement filter; interval varies by source Filter price, availability and the maker’s stated service interval.
Controls Auto, Sleep, Mid, High, timer, UV/anion selection and SmarterHome pairing Whether physical controls remain available if cloud or app services change.
Longevity risk Model marked discontinued by CHOICE Whether the product and replacement consumables are still in current production.

Use that checklist rather than comparing only room-size claims. A purifier with a lower headline area but readily available, less expensive filters may cost less and be easier to keep operational over several years.

Who should buy, keep or skip the Kogan 5S?

It makes sense for

  • An owner who already has the unit, it operates normally and can obtain genuine KAH13FTR5SA filters.
  • A buyer who finds a substantially discounted example with a new or recently replaced filter and confirms app or physical operation.
  • Someone needing a large claimed coverage area and wanting timer and smartphone controls rather than a manual-only purifier.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a currently supported product with a clear long-term supply of filters.
  • You cannot verify the replacement-filter source before purchase.
  • You require independently measured noise, CADR or sensor accuracy to make a health, workplace or performance decision.
  • You expect an air purifier to replace ventilation, vacuuming or a rangehood.

The practical verdict is conditional: the 5S offers a credible feature set and large claimed airflow, but discontinuation and filter economics dominate the ownership decision. Buy or retain it only after checking the consumable pipeline and accepting that the published performance figures are claims rather than a current independent benchmark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KASMAPF5SIA the same purifier as the Kogan Smarter Home 5S?

Yes. KASMAPF5SIA is the model identifier used for the Smarter Home Air Purifier 5S. Match that code on the rating label and in listings because Kogan sells several similarly named air-purifier products.

Can I use the 5S in a country with a different mains voltage?

The guide specifies 100–240 V at 50/60 Hz, which covers many household systems. You still need the correct plug arrangement and should confirm local electrical-safety requirements; the voltage range does not guarantee certification or a suitable plug everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask a seller before buying a second-hand unit?

Request the model-label photo, the current filter-percentage display and a short video showing Auto, Sleep, Mid and High operation. Also ask whether the seller has tested the exact KAH13FTR5SA replacement filter source, rather than assuming a generic cartridge will fit.

Does a red PM2.5 light identify a specific pollutant?

No. The colour is the purifier’s progressively poorer PM2.5 air-quality band. It is not a laboratory identification of smoke, gases, allergens or a medical exposure level, so investigate the source and ventilate appropriately when conditions require it.
