Is the Koala Calm As worth buying?
It is potentially worthwhile only when the seller can establish that the mattress is genuine, unused or acceptably preserved, and covered by clearly stated return terms. The design offers a practical choice between two firmness levels, and controlled review testing found low motion transfer, reasonable edge support and effective cooling. Those advantages are offset by the model’s discontinued status and by the fact that comfort is highly personal.
A new purchase through Koala’s normal channel would ordinarily be easier to evaluate because the official policy describes a home trial. A discontinued unit offered by a marketplace or another owner may not receive the same treatment. Before paying, obtain the exact model name, manufacturing or purchase documentation, condition, delivery arrangements and written return policy. Do not assume that a historical review-page price or the original brand policy automatically applies to a current listing.
How firm is the Koala Calm As?
Tom’s Guide estimated the firmer surface at about 7/10 and the medium-firm surface at about 6.5/10. These are reviewer estimates, not an official Koala numerical rating. The plush cover makes each side feel slightly softer than the underlying foam might suggest, and body weight, sleeping position and the support underneath can change the perceived result.

Heat management
The extended-use review described cooling performance as good. That is encouraging for sleepers who dislike a warm mattress, yet room temperature, bedding, clothing and individual metabolism all influence heat. A positive cooling observation should not be read as a guarantee that every hot sleeper will remain comfortable through summer.
Edge support
Edge support was judged decent rather than exceptional. That can make sitting down or using more of the sleep surface practical, but it is not equivalent to the rigid perimeter found on some hybrid or innerspring designs. If you regularly sit on the edge, test that area during the home trial whenever possible.
Comfort across sleeping positions
Tom’s Guide found the mattress comfortable for several sleeper types while emphasizing that feel is personal. The reversible layer gives you two starting points, but it cannot correct every mismatch in pressure relief, spinal alignment or shoulder and hip comfort. Pay attention to how your body feels after a full night and again after several consecutive nights rather than judging solely by a brief lie-down.

The 37 kg figure applies to the Queen listing and may not describe the weight of the shipping cartons or a different size. Confirm dimensions, weight and included components with the seller, especially when buying a stored or second-hand unit.
How do you set up the Koala Calm As?
Setup is straightforward in principle but physically demanding because the main carton is heavy. The mattress must be placed on its support before you finish unwrapping and arranging the layers.

- Prepare the room and base. Clear a path from the delivery point to the bed and install a supported, ventilated base that meets Koala’s spacing guidance.
- Identify both cartons. The main base and the rolled flippable layer arrive separately. Keep the second carton nearby so it is not mistaken for packaging waste.
- Move the main box into position. Tom’s Guide found the main box heavy to move; use a second person rather than dragging it across the floor or attempting a risky solo lift.
- Unwrap the base on the bed. Position the compressed mattress on the support before removing its packaging, following the orientation marks or instructions supplied with the unit.
- Open and place the rolled layer. Unwrap the second box and lay the flippable layer over the base as directed.
- Choose the starting surface. Use the medium-firm orientation first if you prefer a little more give, or the firmer orientation if you want more resistance. Keep the alternative orientation available so you can make a deliberate comparison.
- Check the whole sleep surface. Confirm that the cover and layer are lying flat and that the anti-slip base is contacting the platform evenly before making the bed.
Do not discard cartons or paperwork until you have checked the mattress and confirmed the seller’s return conditions. For a discontinued model, packaging and documentation can be especially important if a return or warranty question arises.
What bed base does the mattress require?
Koala’s official FAQ recommends a supported, ventilated base and says slats should be no more than 7.5 cm apart. A base with wider gaps may fail to support the foam evenly and could affect comfort or durability.

If your bedroom uses an adjustable frame, obtain written confirmation for the specific model and usage pattern rather than assuming that a flat-mattress warranty covers prolonged articulation.
- Measure slat spacing before delivery; the stated maximum is 7.5 cm.
- Check that the platform is ventilated and provides continuous, even support.
- Inspect for sharp edges, protruding hardware or damaged slats that could catch the cover.
- Ask a seller to confirm whether the mattress has been used on an adjustable base and for how long.
What is the Koala Calm As trial period and return policy?
Koala’s official FAQ describes a risk-free 120-night home trial with a full refund if the mattress is unsuitable. That policy is the clearest way to evaluate a personal comfort product because it allows repeated nights in your own room rather than a short showroom test.
The qualification is important: a current listing may not be a direct Koala sale. ProductReview.com.au marks the Calm As discontinued, so a marketplace seller, reseller or private owner may set different return terms or offer no return at all. What does the Koala Calm As warranty cover?
Koala’s official warranty document says the warranty begins on the date the purchaser receives the mattress and continues for 10 years. It is personal to the original purchaser, cannot be transferred and applies only while that purchaser is resident in Australia.
Coverage is limited to qualifying manufacturing or material defects. The document excludes normal wear and tear, normal softening and products bought from someone other than Koala. Those conditions matter greatly for a discontinued mattress: a second-hand buyer may possess a genuine product yet still lack warranty eligibility because the warranty is not transferable.

The warranty document limits coverage to the original purchaser resident in Australia and excludes purchases made from someone other than the manufacturer.
Why might the historical CHOICE price differ from a listing I see now?
