Kimi K3.1 Pro is worth evaluating if you need a very large context window, visual input, agent-style workflows, or a token-priced API. Moonshot AI describes it as a 3T-class flagship with native visual understanding and a 1-million-token context window. Those are vendor specifications, not proof that it outperforms ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. Kimi also separates its consumer memberships from API billing, and its mainland-China membership prices cannot be compared directly with a US subscription or a per-token developer account. The practical choice depends on your workload, country, usage limits, privacy requirements, and whether you are buying an app subscription or metered model access.

What is Kimi K3.1 Pro?

K3.1 Pro is Moonshot AI’s flagship model in the Kimi assistant and Kimi API products. Moonshot’s API documentation calls it the first K3.1-series model and describes it as having 3T-class parameters, native visual understanding, and a 1-million-token context window. The company also associates it with coding, 3D creation, financial research, long-document work, and modeling.

These specifications describe what Moonshot says it built; they are not an independent quality ranking. No controlled, like-for-like benchmark establishes that K3.1 Pro is more accurate, faster overall, or better at general reasoning than competing assistants.

Documented item What Moonshot states How to interpret it
Model family First K3.1-series model and the company’s most capable flagship to date Vendor positioning, not an independent performance result
Scale 3T-class parameters A vendor-listed specification; parameter count alone does not predict your results
Context 1 million tokens A stated maximum context window; individual products can impose their own quotas or limits
Input modalities Native visual understanding Supports visual reasoning in products that expose the capability
Highspeed variant Same stated intelligence and context window, with Moonshot describing it as roughly two to three times faster A vendor speed claim that has not been independently tested here

What can Kimi do?

Kimi’s help-center and product materials describe a web-connected assistant with deep thinking, multimodal reasoning, long conversations, and agent workflows. The exact feature set and quota can differ between the free product, paid memberships, Kimi Code, and the API.

Web search and deep research

Kimi can use web-connected search for tasks that require current information, and its agent materials describe deep-research workflows. Treat “web-connected” as a product capability rather than a guarantee that every answer contains complete or correct citations. Check the links and dates in consequential work.

Documents, spreadsheets, and long conversations

The general agent materials cover document and spreadsheet processing. A million-token context window can make very large source sets technically possible, but the useful limit is lower when a product applies file-size, message-count, retrieval, or plan-specific quotas. Long context also does not eliminate the need to organize source material and verify important claims.

Multimodal and creative work

Moonshot describes native visual understanding, while Kimi’s product listings mention 3D creation, slides, and other agent features. Visual input may be useful for diagrams, screenshots, design references, and image-heavy documents. The Apple App Store listing confirms a free mobile download with in-app purchases; it confirms distribution through Apple’s store, not compatibility with any particular hardware or workflow.

Coding and Kimi Code

Kimi Code is documented as a coding-assistant suite. The documentation identifies K3.1 Pro and a Highspeed option, with the latter described as approximately two to three times faster. For software work, test the model against your own repository, language mix, test suite, and security rules rather than assuming that a larger context window produces better code.

Financial and analytical tasks

Moonshot’s API page cites financial research and modeling among the model’s claimed strengths. Such work still requires primary-source checking, explicit assumptions, and human review. A model’s ability to process a large input does not make its forecasts or extracted figures authoritative.

How much does Kimi cost?

Kimi has two separate purchasing paths: a consumer membership and a metered API. They are not interchangeable. A membership does not automatically provide API credits, and API spending is not included in the membership tiers described by Kimi’s pricing overview.

API prices in US dollars

The following rates are the API platform’s displayed prices checked on October 25, 2026. They are usage rates per million tokens, not monthly subscriptions.

API variant Input tokens Output tokens Cache write Cache hit
Kimi K3.1 Pro $2.00 per million $10.00 per million $2.00 per million $0.20 per million
Kimi K3.1 Pro Highspeed $4.00 per million $20.00 per million $4.00 per million $0.20 per million

Input tokens are what you send, output tokens are what the model generates, and cached requests can use the separate cache-hit rate when the platform recognizes the cached content. Your bill therefore depends on prompt length, response length, cache behavior, retries, and traffic volume. Set a spending limit and monitor usage before connecting the API to an automated agent.

Consumer memberships in mainland China

Kimi’s pricing overview, marked updated October 24, 2026, lists monthly prices of ¥0, ¥49, ¥99, ¥199, ¥699, and ¥1,399, with annual-billing options. The page identifies these as mainland-China membership prices. It also says API use is charged separately.

Monthly tier shown by Kimi Region and billing qualification What is established
¥0 Mainland China; monthly listing Free tier price shown; exact quotas can change
¥49 Mainland China; monthly listing Paid tier price shown; entitlements depend on the live plan page
¥99 Mainland China; monthly listing Paid tier price shown; entitlements depend on the live plan page
¥199 Mainland China; monthly listing Paid tier price shown; entitlements depend on the live plan page
¥699 Mainland China; monthly listing Paid tier price shown; entitlements depend on the live plan page
¥1,399 Mainland China; monthly listing Paid tier price shown; entitlements depend on the live plan page

The page mentions annual billing, but the available information does not establish a single annual price for every tier. Confirm the current currency, taxes, quotas, model access, and renewal terms in your account before paying. Do not convert these figures into a universal worldwide price.

How do Kimi’s prices compare with other leading assistants?

Published headline prices show the billing models, not equivalent value. Included messages, priority, premium models, file limits, regional taxes, and tools differ, so a flat subscription cannot be compared directly with Kimi’s per-token API rates.

Service and plan Published headline price Billing note What a fair comparison still needs
Claude Pro $20 per month $17 per month with annual billing, $200 billed upfront Included usage, model access, priority, and region
Google AI Pro $19.99 per month Price shown on Google’s US page US availability, included products, limits, and taxes
ChatGPT Pro $100, $200, or $500 per month tiers Multiple monthly levels Tier-specific limits, model access, tools, and availability
Kimi consumer membership ¥0 to ¥1,399 monthly tiers shown Mainland-China pricing; annual options also shown Current regional entitlements and quotas
Kimi API K3.1 Pro $2 input and $10 output per million tokens Metered API billing Your token volume, output length, caching, and automation pattern

For a consumer decision, compare one month of expected use with each plan’s actual message, file, image, agent, and priority limits. For a developer decision, estimate monthly input and output tokens separately, then include retries, cached prompts, storage, and any other service charges. Never use a consumer subscription price as a proxy for API cost.

What does Kimi’s privacy policy say?

Kimi’s privacy policy is identified as effective August 31, 2026, and last updated August 24, 2026. It says the service may collect account information such as a phone number, device and operating-system details, network information, access times, IP addresses, usage data, and conversation content.

Content and account data

The policy says users may upload text, images, audio, video, and other files. It states that conversation inputs and outputs are collected and used to provide the conversation service. This matters when a prompt contains confidential source code, customer records, unpublished research, or regulated information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Training use and the opt-out process

The policy says content may be used to optimize models after encryption and de-identification. It does not describe the training choice as an unconditional, one-click switch. The policy states: “If you do not want your content to be used for model training, you may contact our customer service through the contact details set out in Section 11 of this Policy and make a request.” It also describes identity verification as part of that process.

That wording means you should keep a record of the request, the account to which it applies, and the response you receive. Before uploading sensitive material, confirm whether your product, organization, and region have additional terms beyond the general consumer policy.

How should Kimi’s privacy be compared with ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini?

The available plan pages establish prices for those services, but they do not provide enough uniform policy detail to rank one assistant as universally more private. A useful comparison is criterion by criterion, using the exact consumer, team, or API policy that governs your account.

Question to check Why it changes the decision
Is training use on by default, and how is an opt-out requested? An opt-out may be a self-service control, a contractual term, or a support request with verification.
How long are prompts, files, and outputs retained? Retention affects exposure after a conversation is deleted and may differ between consumer and business products.
Can people or service providers review content? Human review and subprocessors can create additional access paths.
Where is data processed or stored? Country, residency, and transfer requirements may rule out an otherwise suitable plan.
What protections apply to API or team accounts? Business terms can differ materially from consumer terms, including training, access controls, and contractual commitments.
Do connected tools and uploaded files have separate rules? Search, cloud connectors, code repositories, and file-processing services may introduce their own retention and sharing terms.

For confidential work, minimize personal data, remove secrets before uploading files, use the least-privileged connector permissions, and obtain organizational approval. Privacy language can change, so save the policy version and effective date that applied when you made the decision.

Which assistant is the best fit for different workloads?

There is no evidence here for an objective overall winner. Choose by the capability and billing requirement that matters most to your work.

Your priority Why Kimi may fit What to verify before committing
Very large documents or long conversations Moonshot lists a 1-million-token context window Product-specific file limits, quotas, retrieval behavior, and actual cost
Visual inputs and creative agents Native visual understanding plus documented slides and 3D-creation features Which plan includes each tool, export formats, and usage caps
Coding workflows Kimi Code provides a dedicated coding-assistant suite and a Highspeed option Repository access, language performance, latency, tests, and security controls
Automated applications Token-priced API with separate cache rates Monthly token forecast, rate limits, latency, monitoring, and support
Simple consumer chat subscription Free and paid membership tiers are listed for mainland China Your country, payment method, included usage, and current plan entitlements
Privacy-sensitive business use A published policy explains collection and a support-based training request Whether a business or API agreement provides stronger controls for your data

Claude Pro, Google AI Pro, and ChatGPT Pro may be more convenient if your work already depends on their surrounding ecosystems, but the cited pricing pages alone do not establish comparative model quality or privacy superiority. Run a small, representative evaluation with the same prompts, files, acceptance criteria, and privacy constraints before migrating a workflow.

How can you evaluate Kimi without overspending?

  1. Define the product you are testing. Decide whether you need the mobile or web assistant, a consumer membership, Kimi Code, or the API. Do not mix subscription results with API economics.
  2. Write down your workload. Record typical prompt size, expected response length, file types, number of daily tasks, need for web search, coding languages, and whether visual input is essential.
  3. Check regional availability. Confirm that the sign-up page, payment method, app distribution, model, and features are available in your country. Treat the ¥ prices as mainland-China figures.
  4. Test representative tasks. Use the same source documents and scoring rules for extraction, citations, coding tests, image interpretation, and long-context recall. Record failures as well as successful answers.
  5. Estimate the bill. For API use, calculate input and output tokens separately, then model retries and cache behavior. For memberships, compare the plan’s included quotas with your measured weekly use.
  6. Review privacy before uploading real data. Read the policy version, determine how training requests are made, and remove secrets or personal information from test files.
  7. Set a rollback plan. Keep exports, prompts, evaluation notes, and access credentials independent of one provider so you can switch if limits, prices, or terms change.

What are the main pitfalls?

  • Confusing a context window with a guaranteed allowance. The 1-million-token figure is a vendor-listed model specification. A particular app or plan can impose smaller file, message, or rate limits.
  • Assuming Highspeed is independently proven to be faster. Moonshot describes a roughly two-to-three-times speed advantage, but that claim has not been established by a comparable external test.
  • Comparing ¥ memberships with dollar subscriptions without geography. Currency, taxes, availability, quotas, and included tools can make the headline numbers misleading.
  • Using an API rate as though it were a subscription. Automated workloads can generate substantial output-token charges even when input prompts are short.
  • Treating a support request as an instant privacy toggle. Kimi’s policy describes contacting customer service and identity verification for a training-use request.
  • Assuming feature names guarantee identical access. Search, agents, coding, 3D creation, slides, and financial tools may have separate quotas or require a particular product tier.
  • Expecting model size to settle quality. Parameter count and context length do not replace testing for factuality, instruction following, latency, or code correctness on your tasks.

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro worth trying?

Kimi K3.1 Pro is a credible candidate for users who specifically value Moonshot’s documented long context, visual understanding, agent workflows, Kimi Code, or token-priced API. It is less straightforward when you need a globally uniform consumer price, a clearly self-service training control, or a proven performance advantage over established assistants.

Make the decision with the right unit of comparison: consumer plan against consumer plan, API against API, and the same country, billing period, usage allowance, and privacy terms. As of October 25, 2026, the available documentation supports a feature-and-cost evaluation, not a definitive ranking of Kimi against ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 1-million-token context window mean I can upload a million tokens in every Kimi chat?

No. The figure is the model’s stated context capacity. The app, membership tier, file parser, request-size limit, rate limit, or agent workflow can impose a lower practical ceiling.

Is Kimi K3.1 Pro Highspeed a separate model?

It is presented as a Highspeed variant of K3.1 Pro. Moonshot says it retains the same stated intelligence and context window while targeting roughly two-to-three-times faster responses; that speed difference is a vendor claim rather than an independent benchmark result.

Can a company rely on the consumer Kimi policy for confidential code?

Do not assume so. Consumer, team, and API products can have different contractual protections, retention rules, and training terms. Have your privacy or security team review the exact agreement for the account you will use.

Where can I confirm Kimi’s current membership quotas?

Check the live Kimi membership page for your sign-in region immediately before purchase. The October 24, 2026 overview lists prices and annual options, but plan names, quotas, and feature entitlements can change.
