Killing Shadowheart’s parents does not produce one universal ending in Baldur’s Gate 3. The result depends on who makes the decision. If an anti-Shar Shadowheart chooses to end Arnell and Emmeline Hallowleaf’s suffering, their spirits pass to Selûne and Shadowheart is freed from Shar’s painful bond, although she mourns her family. If a Dark Justiciar Shadowheart sacrifices them, Shar erases her memories of them again and she advances toward leadership of the cloister. If the party kills the parents without Shadowheart’s approval—at the House of Grief or later at camp—Shadowheart becomes furious and leaves permanently. Saving them keeps the family alive but leaves Shadowheart’s connection to Shar intact.
What happens in each Shadowheart parents ending?
The decisive issue is Shadowheart’s agency and allegiance, not simply whether Arnell and Emmeline die. The four documented outcomes are different story branches:

This is a narrative trade-off rather than a single best mechanical ending. You are choosing between Shadowheart’s freedom from Shar, her parents’ survival, a Dark Justiciar outcome, or preserving the relationship with her as a companion.
When anti-Shar Shadowheart chooses death for her parents
After rejecting Shar, Shadowheart can decide that Arnell and Emmeline’s continued imprisonment is unbearable. Her choice ends their suffering, and their spirits become moonmotes in Selûne’s care. That imagery does not mean the parents remain alive in another form: their bodies die, while their spirits are presented as having passed into Selûne’s protection.

Shadowheart is released from the painful connection Shar imposed on her. Freedom does not make the scene happy. She has lost both parents and must process that grief, while continuing as an anti-Shar companion. Later material describes this version of Shadowheart as an adventurer rather than as Shar’s representative.
When a Dark Justiciar Shadowheart sacrifices them
A Shadowheart who has become a Dark Justiciar can treat the imprisoned couple as Shar’s final test. She sacrifices them herself, rather than rejecting the order. Shar then removes her memories of Arnell and Emmeline again, so this branch is not simply the same death with a different line of dialogue.

The Mother Superior material in the epilogue belongs to this Shar-aligned branch, not to the anti-Shar scene in which Shadowheart willingly releases her parents.
When the party kills them without her approval
If the player’s party kills the parents while Shadowheart is absent from the confrontation, the game treats the act as a betrayal. The same applies if the party rescues them and then kills them later at camp. Shadowheart does not interpret either action as helping her or as reproducing her own anti-Shar decision.
The quest journal text reproduced in the Daughter of Darkness documentation states: “Shadowheart’s parents were killed. Deciding she could no longer trust us, Shadowheart left for good.” That entry describes the unauthorized-killing outcome specifically. It should not be used as a blanket description of every ending in which the parents die.

When Shadowheart saves the parents
Shadowheart can reject the sacrifice and keep Arnell and Emmeline alive. They later recover at camp, giving her a living family rather than a memorial and a spiritual release. The cost is that the painful connection to Shar remains; saving the parents is not the same as breaking every consequence of Shar’s influence.
On the anti-Shar route, the epilogue can depict the reunited family sharing a cottage. This is the clearest outcome if your priority is keeping Shadowheart’s parents alive, but it is not the branch that gives her the cleanest separation from Shar.
How do you reach Shadowheart’s parents in the House of Grief?
The confrontation takes place in Act Three, at the end of Daughter of Darkness, beyond the House of Grief’s Threshold of Loss. The Chamber of Loss is behind a door that can be opened in several documented ways.
- Use Sleight of Hand. The quest documentation lists a DC 30 check for opening the door.
- Cast Knock. This provides a spell-based alternative to the lock check.
- Make the required offering. An offering worth at least 1,000 gold is documented as another way through. The door also opens for a Dark Justiciar.
Those numbers are in-game guide requirements, not statistics about how often players succeed. Once inside, Shadowheart’s allegiance and the dialogue you select determine whether the parents are sacrificed, released, or saved.
How can Shadowheart be persuaded to save her parents?
On the Selûnite route, the documented dialogue includes a DC 20 Religion or Persuasion check to save Arnell and Emmeline. A failed or unavailable check does not mean every save must end identically, because approval, memories, and the timing of an earlier conversation can affect whether Shadowheart chooses for herself.

The approval-and-memory route
The quest documentation describes a way to make Shadowheart reliably choose to save her parents without relying on that persuasion roll: reach at least 50 approval and recover at least two of three Act Three memories, then have the resulting city-smells conversation before defeating Viconia.
- Allister Marnley’s gravestone: one memory can be found at the grave.
- Graffiti near the Baldur’s Gate waypoint: a second memory is associated with this writing.
- The Night Orchid cave: the third memory is in the cave within the cloister.
These thresholds are conditional quest-guide details. They are not a guarantee for every game version, modded save, or sequence of conversations. If you want Shadowheart to make the decision herself, explore those memories and hold the city-smells conversation before Viconia is defeated rather than assuming that a single earlier approval total will force the result.
Why does it matter who kills Shadowheart’s parents?
The game distinguishes a voluntary companion decision from an action imposed by the player. When anti-Shar Shadowheart lets her parents pass, she is choosing an act she believes ends their suffering and frees her from Shar. When a Dark Justiciar sacrifices them, she is affirming Shar’s demand. When the party kills them behind her back, Shadowheart has neither chosen the sacrifice nor consented to the supposed rescue.
That distinction controls companion availability. Shadowheart can remain with the party after either of her own death decisions, including the Dark Justiciar sacrifice. The permanent departure is tied to the unauthorized killing branch. Therefore, “the parents die” is not enough information to predict whether Shadowheart stays.
What happens at camp after the parents die?
An anti-Shar resolution can lead to a camp scene in which Shadowheart breaks down beside a statue of Selûne. If her parents died, the scene centers on grief and on living with the decision she made. If she saved them, the family can reassure her and embrace after their reunion.

Later epilogue details differ by branch and can also vary with romance, origin-character status, and other ending decisions. The anti-Shar death route keeps Shadowheart’s identity as Shadowheart rather than restoring the name Jenevelle, while the living-parents route supports the family-cottage outcome. The Shar-aligned Mother Superior ending is separate from both of these anti-Shar possibilities.
Can you kill the parents yourself without Shadowheart leaving?
No, not if Shadowheart is absent or has not approved the act. Killing Arnell and Emmeline yourself at the House of Grief, or killing them later at camp after rescuing them, triggers the permanent departure outcome. The game does not treat your intervention as equivalent to letting an anti-Shar Shadowheart make the decision.
If you want the parents dead while keeping Shadowheart, let her conduct the anti-Shar release or follow the Dark Justiciar sacrifice branch. If you want the parents alive, allow Shadowheart to save them through the appropriate dialogue and approval conditions.

Choose according to the story you want for Shadowheart, because the branches trade different benefits rather than awarding one universally superior result.
- Choose the anti-Shar release if you want Shadowheart free from Shar’s painful bond and are willing to accept her grief and the loss of her living parents.
- Choose the Dark Justiciar sacrifice if you are deliberately following Shar’s route and want the cloister-leadership and potential Sharran-ally consequences.
- Choose rescue if keeping Arnell and Emmeline alive and reaching the family-cottage epilogue matter most, while accepting that the Shar connection remains painful.
- Do not kill them independently if you want Shadowheart to stay in the party. Her response is a permanent departure, not a minor approval penalty.
The choice is therefore about allegiance, agency, and the kind of aftermath you want to see. It is not a hidden requirement for completing the main story, and the game does not present one branch as an objective upgrade over all others.

- Assuming every parental death causes a departure: Shadowheart leaves for good when the party kills the parents without her approval, not when she voluntarily chooses either sacrifice branch.
- Confusing a broken curse with erased memories: the anti-Shar route frees her from Shar’s painful bond; memory erasure is specifically documented for the Dark Justiciar sacrifice.
- Calling moonmotes a living rescue: the Selûnite outcome describes the parents’ spirits passing to Selûne, while the parents themselves die.
- Expecting one check to work in every save: the DC 20 dialogue option and the 50-plus approval/two-memory route depend on the branch and conversation timing.

How did the quest’s themes change across the endings?
Shadowheart’s post-quest reflection captures the story’s central contrast: “You can’t cast a shadow without some light.” In the anti-Shar route, light is associated with painful truth, mourning, and release from Shar’s control. In the Dark Justiciar route, obedience removes the immediate burden of memory but deepens Shar’s authority over Shadowheart.
The parents’ fate is consequently also a statement about who controls Shadowheart’s past. Saving them preserves a family relationship. Letting them pass under Selûne gives Shadowheart agency and spiritual separation at the price of bereavement. Sacrificing them as a Dark Justiciar confirms Shar’s claim over her memories. Are Arnell and Emmeline still alive as moonmotes?
No. The Selûnite scene presents moonmotes as their spirits entrusted to Selûne after death, not as living parents who can return to camp. The wording is spiritual and symbolic rather than a promise that their bodies survive.
Does Shadowheart become Jenevelle again if her parents die?
On the documented anti-Shar grief route, she keeps using the name Shadowheart. The epilogue’s identity details can vary with other decisions, but the parental death branch itself is not described as automatically restoring her birth name.
Can romance or origin choices alter the camp scene?
