Kevin Indig treats a newsletter issue as a source file, not a single finished post. His Growth Memo process starts with original research, then separates that work into charts, findings, questions, short videos and other discussion prompts. He tests those small pieces in Substack Notes, expands the strongest responses into future long-form issues, and batches the rest into a scheduled publishing queue with Buffer. Performance data then informs the next set of ideas. The result is a repeatable distribution loop: one research-heavy Memo can support a week of distinct posts without rewriting the same article six times.
How does Kevin Indig turn one newsletter into a week of posts?
The system has six connected stages: research one substantial issue, identify independent ideas inside it, test low-cost versions, develop winners, schedule a queue and study the results. Each stage has a different job, so “repurposing” does not mean copying the email into shorter paragraphs. It means publishing the useful units of the work in formats suited to different moments and channels.

- Research the Memo. Growth Memo is a weekly, research-backed publication about SEO, AI search and organic growth. Indig draws ideas from original analysis, client conversations and recurring patterns in data.
- Mark extraction points. During editing, he looks for a chart, a finding or a question that can stand on its own.
- Run small tests. He posts short takes, charts, videos and teasers in Substack Notes, where producing a test takes minutes rather than the week required for a fully researched Memo.
- Develop the winners. A Note that attracts useful attention can become the subject of a later newsletter issue, creating a feedback loop between quick experiments and deeper research.
- Batch distribution. Indig and his team prepare posts around the Memo and place them in a queue. Buffer schedules the queue so publication does not depend on where he is working that day.
- Review and plan. His team examines the history of published posts to see what resonated and uses those observations to choose the next experiments.
Indig describes the principle plainly: “Publishing is only half the job — you also need a repeatable way to distribute your work.” The distribution layer is what turns a good issue into a continuing stream of useful touchpoints.
What is the newsletter being used as a source for?
The source is not a generic article that can be cut into arbitrary snippets. It is a research package with evidence, interpretation and open questions. That structure gives each extracted asset a distinct purpose.

Original research and data
A dataset, methodology or observed trend can support a chart, a short explanation and a longer analysis. Keep the definitions and time period attached to every visual so a social post does not imply more certainty than the underlying work supports.
Client conversations and recurring patterns
Questions heard repeatedly from clients can become prompts for discussion. Remove confidential details, state the general problem and invite readers to describe how they handle it. This format is useful when the issue is practical rather than statistical.
Unresolved questions
A question raised by the Memo can stand alone as a Note or video prompt. It does not need to be presented as a conclusion; marking it as an open question can produce better responses than forcing a definitive claim.
Which pieces should you pull from a long-form newsletter?
Indig names three reliable extraction units—charts, findings and questions—but a complete system assigns each one a format and a reason to exist. The following matrix is a working guide for creators using the same approach.
| Extraction unit | Best first format | Reader action | What to preserve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chart or table | Annotated image or short screen video | Inspect a pattern and discuss it | Units, date range, sample and source |
| Single finding | Short text post with one implication | Agree, challenge or ask for context | Scope and qualification of the finding |
| Open question | Prompt in Notes or a video | Share an experience or counterexample | Why the question matters |
| Method or process | Numbered mini-tutorial | Try one step | Prerequisites and failure conditions |
| Contrasting examples | Carousel or side-by-side post | Compare choices | Consistent criteria for both examples |
Each asset should add a small amount of context instead of serving as an advertisement for the full issue. A chart post might explain one surprising movement; the email can then contain the complete method and limitations.
How can you test an idea before committing to a full article?
Use a short Note as a hypothesis test. The goal is not to predict the exact reach of a future Memo; it is to learn whether the framing is clear enough to earn attention and useful responses.

- Write one claim or question. Keep the Note narrow enough that a reader can understand it without the newsletter.
- Add one proof element. Use a chart fragment, a specific observation or a brief video rather than a list of unsupported assertions.
- Invite a defined response. Ask for a counterexample, implementation detail or interpretation. “Thoughts?” produces less actionable information.
- Watch several signals. Record replies, reposts, saves, profile visits and clicks where available. Qualitative comments can reveal confusion even when reach is high.
- Decide against a rule. Promote an idea when the response shows a genuine problem or disagreement worth investigating. Drop or reframe it when attention is only superficial.
Indig’s practical advantage is the cost difference: a fully researched Memo takes an entire week, while a Note can take only a few minutes. Testing first protects research time without replacing research with popularity.
How do you expand a successful Note into a full issue?
A winning Note is a signal to investigate, not a finished outline. Treat the responses as additional questions for the research phase.
Separate the signal from the wording
Readers may react to a provocative phrase, a familiar problem or the visual itself. Identify which underlying question generated the response before planning the article.
Build evidence around that question
Collect the data, examples or interviews needed to answer it. Keep the scope explicit so a small Note does not become a sweeping claim about an entire market.
Return the result to the distribution loop
When the new Memo is complete, extract fresh charts, findings and questions. The original Note has now influenced the research, and the finished issue supplies another set of independent assets.
How does batching and scheduling keep the system running?
Batching moves repetitive distribution work into one planned session. Indig and his team prepare posts around the Memo, then use Buffer to schedule them. This matters because travel and client commitments can otherwise create gaps between publication days.

Create a queue by asset, not by duplicate copy
Place the chart, finding, question and tutorial in separate queue slots. Adapt the opening line, length and media for each destination while keeping the underlying fact consistent.
Leave room for live responses
Schedule the durable posts in advance, but reserve time to answer comments and adjust a queued item if new evidence changes the interpretation. Automation should protect attention, not remove editorial judgment.

Before a post enters the queue, verify links, dates, chart labels and any claim that depends on a particular edition or dataset. A scheduling tool cannot correct a factual error.
Indig says Buffer saves him “2–3 hours a week.” That is his reported result, not a guaranteed outcome for every creator; the saving depends on how much of the preparation is delegated to a team and how many channels are in the queue.
How does performance data feed the next set of ideas?
Indig uses Buffer’s MCP integration with Codex to inspect his own post history, identify which posts performed well and generate inspiration for what to publish next. In practical terms, the connection turns an archive into a searchable record rather than relying on memory.
- Keep comparable records. Store the post date, format, topic, channel and a small set of outcome measures.
- Group by idea and format. A topic that succeeds as a chart may behave differently as a text question, so do not blend every result into one score.
- Read the comments. Quantitative performance shows attention; replies often explain whether readers understood or trusted the claim.
- Ask for patterns, not guarantees. An assistant can surface recurring topics or formats, but a correlation in your archive is not proof that the next post will perform the same way.
Indig calls the connection “unbeatable” because it links performance history with ideation. The useful principle is broader than any specific integration: make your own publishing data available when planning the next research cycle.

What would a practical seven-day queue look like?
The following is an illustrative schedule based on the extraction method, not a claim about Indig’s exact calendar. Adjust the order to the channel and audience you own.
| Day | Asset | Purpose | Editorial check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Memo announcement with the core problem | Direct readers to the complete issue | State who benefits and what the issue answers |
| Tuesday | Chart with one interpretation | Make the evidence inspectable | Show source, units and date range |
| Wednesday | Finding in a short text post | Invite agreement or challenge | Keep the claim within its measured scope |
| Thursday | Open question or short video | Collect experiences and objections | Ask for a specific type of response |
| Friday | Method or checklist | Give readers an action they can try | List prerequisites and likely failure points |
| Weekend | Response-led follow-up | Address the strongest question from the week | Correct misunderstandings instead of repeating the promotion |
This cadence is deliberately modular. If the Memo has no defensible chart, do not manufacture one; replace it with a documented method or an honest question.
How does this approach compare with publishing each article only once?
A single-send workflow is simpler, but it leaves discovery and learning to chance. Indig’s system trades a small amount of planning for more opportunities to reach readers and improve the next issue.
| Dimension | Single-send article | Memo-to-week system |
|---|---|---|
| Idea-testing speed | Feedback arrives after the full article is finished | A Note can test framing in minutes before a week of research |
| Format coverage | Usually one email or web article | Email, Notes, charts, video, tutorials and social posts |
| Distribution automation | Manual publication each time | A prepared queue can be scheduled in advance |
| Feedback quality | One post-publication result | Qualitative replies plus measurable clicks and engagement across assets |
| Audience ownership | Often dependent on a platform feed | An email list remains the durable relationship while platforms provide discovery |
Indig has also emphasized tracking newsletter, LinkedIn and Twitter metrics while retaining an email list. The strategic distinction is ownership: social posts can widen reach, but the list is the channel you can contact without depending on a feed algorithm.
What scale has Growth Memo reached, and what do those numbers mean?
Audience figures vary by source and access date. Buffer’s 2026 case study describes Growth Memo as reaching more than 29,000 weekly readers, while Indig’s Substack profile displayed 30K+ subscribers when accessed in 2026. A public sponsorship listing accessed in 2026 reported 29,000 subscribers and a 45% open rate, with the United States listed as 50% of the audience.
These figures are publisher or platform displays, not an independent audit, and they should not be treated as a forecast for another newsletter. They do show why a distribution system matters at scale: a small improvement in how one issue is reused can affect many reader touchpoints.

What can go wrong when you repurpose a newsletter?
Most failures come from treating extraction as duplication or metrics as a substitute for judgment.
- Context collapse: A chart without its sample, date or definition can mislead. Put those qualifiers in the post or link directly to the full explanation.
- Repetition fatigue: Six near-identical announcements feel like spam. Change the reader’s job—inspect evidence, answer a question or try a method—rather than changing only the headline.
- Premature expansion: A high-view Note may reflect controversy, not a durable research question. Examine the replies before committing a week of work.
- Queue rigidity: Scheduled posts can become outdated when new evidence appears. Keep a human review point before publication.
- Platform dependence: Reach on Notes or social feeds does not replace an email relationship. Use discovery channels to guide interested readers toward the publication you control.
- Unclear ownership: If several people prepare assets, record who checked sources, links and permissions. A batch process needs accountability as much as speed.
How can a small team adopt the method without copying Kevin’s scale?
Start with one substantial issue and three extraction units rather than promising a post every day. During editing, label a chart, a finding and a question; publish one test in Notes; then schedule only the assets that remain accurate and useful after review. Keep a simple spreadsheet of topic, format, date, replies, clicks and lessons. After four or five issues, you will have enough history to see which ideas deserve deeper research.
The method is portable because its essential ingredients are editorial: original evidence, modular thinking, a cheap test, a queue and a feedback habit. Buffer supplies the scheduling layer in Indig’s setup, while Substack provides the newsletter and Notes environment, but the loop can be implemented with equivalent tools as long as the email list and performance records remain accessible.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a repurposed post be?
Use only the length needed to make one asset understandable on its own. A short finding may need two sentences and a qualification, while a tutorial needs enough steps for a reader to try it without guessing.
Should every newsletter issue produce the same number of posts?
No. The number should follow the evidence available in that issue. A tightly focused Memo may yield three strong assets, and forcing additional posts can create repetition or unsupported claims.
What if a Note gets little engagement?
Check whether the framing, timing or format obscured the idea before rejecting the underlying topic. You can revise the question or add evidence, but do not assume low reach proves that the research question has no value.

How do I protect confidential client information when extracting ideas?
Generalize the problem, remove identifying details and obtain permission before using distinctive examples. If a detail could let a reader infer the client, replace it with aggregate evidence or omit it.
