Moving notes from NotebookLM to Obsidian can reduce how much of your writing reaches an AI provider—but only if the AI model and the plugins that handle your notes also stay local. Obsidian stores vault data on your device by default, while an AI plugin may send the open note or other searched notes to a hosted service. A local model served by Ollama avoids that provider route for local prompts and responses, according to Ollama’s policy. The practical privacy difference is the data path, not the app name: a local vault paired with cloud AI is still a cloud data path.

Is Obsidian more private than NotebookLM?

It can be, when you keep the vault on your device and use local AI without other network-connected plugins handling the same content. Obsidian’s privacy policy says desktop and mobile data is saved locally and never sent to Obsidian’s servers; it also says plugins, themes, and embedded websites can make network connections. NotebookLM—referred to as Gemini Notebook in Google’s current help materials—is cloud software, so its privacy terms and settings govern the content and chats you use there.

That distinction matters because “stored locally” does not mean “never leaves the device.” Obsidian can hold the source files on your computer while a plugin sends text from those files to an AI provider. Likewise, moving the files does not erase copies previously uploaded to another service. A privacy-conscious setup therefore has to account for the notes, the model, plugins, sync, and any feedback you send.

What the policies say about notebook content

Google’s Gemini Notebook help documentation says content in Gemini Notebook will not be used to directly train its foundational AI models unless the user provides feedback. Google says feedback can include prompts, uploads, sources, and generated outputs; trained teams may review it, and related content may be retained for up to three years. Separately, Google’s Gemini privacy hub says Notebook chats follow Keep Activity settings and may be used to improve Gemini with human reviewers, while source files are not directly used to train generative models. These are distinct statements about different kinds of content and use; “not directly used to train” should not be read as “never processed, reviewed, or retained.”

Why local storage is not the whole answer

Obsidian’s policy covers Obsidian’s own services, not every third-party plugin or embedded website a user chooses to run. If a plugin forwards note text to a hosted model, the provider’s terms become relevant too. Obsidian Sync is another service in the data path, although Obsidian says Sync stores data with end-to-end encryption. Decide whether your requirement is simply to avoid AI-provider access, or to keep all copies and synchronization off external services as well.

What changes when you use a local LLM with Obsidian?

With local inference, your note text is processed by a model running on your own device or local server rather than being sent to a hosted AI provider for that request. Ollama’s privacy policy says it does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content processed locally. That statement applies to local processing; Ollama says cloud-hosted model requests have separate, transient-processing terms.

The result depends on the full route from note to answer. A plugin may search notes, assemble excerpts, and pass that context to a model. If the configured model endpoint is local, those prompts and responses can remain on the device under Ollama’s stated policy. If the endpoint is a hosted provider—or the plugin routes requests through a hosted service—the local location of the vault does not prevent the note text from crossing the network.

Local model versus hosted model

Question Local Ollama processing Hosted AI processing
Where is the note stored? In the Obsidian vault on your device, unless you separately sync or transmit it. The vault may still be local, but text sent for an AI request reaches the configured provider.
What happens to prompts and responses? Ollama says local prompts, responses, and model interactions are not collected, stored, transmitted, or accessed by Ollama. Terms depend on the provider and route. Google and Anthropic describe different policies for content and feedback.
What if I use a cloud-hosted model through Ollama? That is not local inference; Ollama says cloud-hosted requests have separate transient-processing terms. Review the applicable cloud provider’s terms, including retention, training, feedback, and logging.
What else can transmit notes? Plugins, themes, embedded websites, or sync tools may create separate network connections. The same additional connections apply, on top of the hosted AI request.

How do Obsidian AI plugins handle note text?

They do not all work the same way, so check the specific plugin’s disclosure and configuration rather than assuming that “AI in Obsidian” means local processing. The documented behavior of two plugins illustrates the difference between selecting a provider and controlling whether note context is sent.

Home + AI

Home + AI supports Ollama and hosted providers. Its documentation says that, when vault access is enabled, the open note and notes searched to answer a question are sent to the chosen provider. It also says: “With AI off, nothing is sent to any AI provider.” This gives you a clear control point, but if you turn vault access on, choosing a hosted provider means relevant note text goes to that provider. Choosing Ollama only keeps that text on-device when Ollama is actually processing the request locally.

Agentic Chat

Agentic Chat documents a fully local Ollama mode, zero-data-retention OpenRouter defaults, visible tool calls, and approval-gated mutations. It labels itself experimental. Those safeguards are useful distinctions, but experimental software can change, and a zero-data-retention default is not the same as a local route: verify the provider and current settings you actually use. Visible calls and approval gates can help you inspect actions; they do not by themselves establish where every request is processed.

Plugin permissions and review

Before enabling a plugin, identify what it can read and which services it contacts. Look for whether it reads only the active note or searches the vault, whether access is optional, how to disable AI, and whether requests go to a local endpoint or hosted provider. Recheck after plugin updates, especially for experimental tools. Obsidian’s own policy explicitly notes that plugins, themes, and embedded websites may make network connections.

How can I make an Obsidian AI workflow more private?

Start by deciding what “private” means for your notes. If your requirement is that note text never reaches an AI provider, use a local model endpoint and verify that the plugin does not send text elsewhere. If you also want to avoid external copies of the vault, review sync and backup choices separately; local AI does not govern those services.

  1. Keep the vault local. Store the Obsidian vault on the device you intend to use, and decide separately whether to use Obsidian Sync or another synchronization method. Obsidian says Sync data is stored with end-to-end encryption, but synchronization still means the vault is handled by a service.
  2. Choose the model route deliberately. Configure the plugin to use a local Ollama server if the requirement is on-device processing. Confirm that the request is going to the local server rather than a cloud-hosted model or an intermediary service.
  3. Limit vault access. Enable only the note access needed for the task. If the plugin searches the vault, assume that the notes selected for context may be passed to its configured provider, as Home + AI documents when vault access is enabled.
  4. Inspect network disclosures. Review the plugin’s documentation for providers, data handling, and controls. Also consider themes and embedded websites, since they can make network connections too.
  5. Review hosted-provider terms before use. Check what the provider says about retention, model improvement, human review, feedback, and logging. Do this before attaching sensitive notes, not after.
  6. Keep actions reviewable. For tools that can change notes or perform other actions, prefer visible tool calls and explicit approval before mutations. Treat these safeguards as controls over actions, not proof that content never leaves your device.
  7. Recheck settings after updates. Plugin behavior, supported providers, and defaults can change, particularly for software marked experimental. Reconfirm the model route and permissions when the plugin changes.

What are the trade-offs of switching?

A local workflow offers more control over where note text goes, but it asks you to manage the model endpoint and plugin configuration yourself. A hosted notebook offers a cloud-based workflow, while its privacy depends on the service’s policies and settings. Neither option is automatically private in every configuration.

Factor Obsidian with local AI NotebookLM / Gemini Notebook
Note location Obsidian says desktop and mobile data is saved locally and not sent to its servers. Sync is a separate service. Cloud software; Google’s privacy terms apply to notebook content and chats.
AI data path Can stay local with local inference, but plugins can send note text to a chosen provider. Content is handled under Google’s policies; training, activity settings, feedback, and review are not identical categories.
Provider retention and training Local Ollama policy differs from its cloud-hosted model terms; hosted plugin providers set their own terms. Google says notebook content is not directly used to train foundational models unless feedback is provided; reviewed feedback-related content may be retained up to three years.
Setup and oversight Requires choosing and checking a model route, plugin access, and network behavior. Cloud service avoids a local model setup, but users must understand relevant settings and policy terms.
Editing and auditability Agentic Chat documents visible tool calls and approval-gated mutations, but is experimental. Not stated in the Google policy materials cited here.

Convenience is a real trade-off: a hosted service can be easier to use without configuring a local server, while a local setup makes the data route more controllable. This is not a claim that one produces better answers or that a migration is guaranteed to improve privacy. The evidence here supports a policy and configuration comparison, not a measured migration outcome.

Why do provider-specific terms matter?

“AI provider” is not a single privacy category. For example, Anthropic’s Privacy Center describes retention of feedback conversations for consumer products for up to five years, and its stated conditions for using consumer chats to improve services differ from Ollama’s description of local processing. That five-year figure concerns feedback conversations in Anthropic consumer products; it is not a general retention period for every hosted AI request or every account.

When a plugin sends sensitive note excerpts to a hosted service, check the terms for the exact product and account type you are using. Distinguish a prompt from submitted feedback, source files from chat history, and local model processing from cloud-hosted requests. A provider’s broad statement about training may not answer separate questions about human review, retention, or activity settings.

What does “my notes are finally private” actually mean?

It is a reasonable description of a personal setup if the notes remain in a local vault and AI requests use a local model without plugins or other services transmitting the content. It is not a property guaranteed by switching applications. Obsidian’s local-storage policy, a plugin’s network behavior, the model endpoint, and any sync or embedded service each describe a separate part of the data path.

The most useful test is to trace one question from input to answer: which notes are read, where the request is sent, who operates that endpoint, and what the applicable policy says happens afterward? If any part of that route is hosted, local storage alone cannot settle the privacy question.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Obsidian with local AI when I’m offline?

The policies cited here establish that local Ollama processing is distinct from cloud-hosted requests, but they do not specify whether a particular plugin or model will operate without an internet connection. Check the plugin’s requirements and test your chosen local route with network access disabled before relying on it offline.

Does deleting a note remove copies already sent to an AI provider?

Deleting the local file does not, by itself, establish that a provider has deleted a previously submitted prompt or feedback. The relevant provider’s deletion and retention terms determine what happens to those copies.

Is zero data retention the same as running an AI model locally?

No. Zero-data-retention terms concern how a hosted route handles data; local inference concerns where the request is processed. Agentic Chat documents zero-data-retention OpenRouter defaults as well as a separate fully local Ollama mode.

Can I migrate old NotebookLM notebooks into Obsidian without losing anything?

The policies and plugin documentation discussed here do not establish a migration method or guarantee that notebook content, source organization, or generated material transfers intact. Check each service’s export options and verify the contents of any files you move before deleting the originals.
