To turn JSON into a video, send a declarative video document from your server to a rendering API, save the returned render ID, and wait for an HTTPS webhook to report success or failure. The JSON describes the timeline or template, media assets, text, scenes, and output format; the provider performs the rendering asynchronously. When the callback arrives, verify it, process it idempotently, and copy the finished file from the provider’s output URL into storage you control. This pattern avoids keeping a request open during encoding, protects API keys from browser users, and gives your application a reliable event to trigger publishing, notification, or further processing.
What does turning JSON into video actually mean?
JSON is not the video file. It is a machine-readable production plan that tells a rendering service what to place on a timeline, which assets to load, how text should be changed, and which output settings to use. The service validates that plan, queues a render, encodes the media, and exposes a status record and finished-file URL.

- Shotstack uses an Edit JSON object with a timeline, tracks, clips, assets, and output settings.
- Creatomate accepts either a template ID with a
modificationsobject or a complete RenderScript document. - Automotion uses a movie document containing scenes and typed elements.
All three models are declarative: your application describes the desired result rather than issuing frame-by-frame editing commands. Rendering is asynchronous, so the initial HTTP response is an acknowledgement that a job was accepted, not proof that an MP4 already exists.

Which JSON video rendering API should you use?
Choose the service whose input model matches how your application creates videos. A timeline-oriented model is easiest when your code assembles clips dynamically; a template model is efficient when nontechnical users design the layout once and your system only changes data.
| Axis | Shotstack | Creatomate | Automotion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Input model | Edit JSON with timeline, tracks, clips, assets, and output settings | Template modifications or a full RenderScript | Movie JSON with scenes and typed elements |
| Completion options | Poll the render ID or receive a callback | Poll render status or receive a webhook | Poll or use a signed webhook |
| Finished output | Temporary URL; the tutorial describes copying it to a CDN or other storage | URL is usable when status is succeeded; hosted for up to 30 days |
outputUrl is available when status is done |
| Best fit | Timeline editing and broad media operations | Template-driven personalized video | Direct JSON movie documents and automation recipes |
Do not select solely on the existence of a webhook. Compare the schema you must generate, callback authentication, status vocabulary, output retention, and whether the provider expects you to copy files to your own CDN or bucket.
How should I model a video as JSON?
Start with a document that separates content from rendering instructions. Keep your application’s business data—such as a customer name or product price—outside the final render document until you validate and escape it. Then map that data into the provider’s schema.
Timeline documents
For a timeline API, represent each visual layer as a track and each timed item as a clip. A clip points to an asset and carries timing or transformation properties; the output object selects the container, codec-related defaults, resolution, or other supported settings. A minimal structural example is:
{
"timeline": { "tracks": [] },
"output": { "format": "mp4", "resolution": "hd" },
"callback": "https://example.com/webhooks/shotstack"
}
The empty track list is only a shape illustration; a real render needs clips and assets that the selected API can access. Validate duration, media URLs, and required fields before submitting so a predictable client-side error does not become a failed asynchronous job.

Template modifications
A template workflow stores layout and animation in the provider’s editor or template definition. Your request supplies the template identifier and a map of values to replace, plus a callback URL and optional correlation metadata:
{
"template_id": "YOUR_TEMPLATE_ID",
"modifications": { "Title": "Welcome" },
"webhook_url": "https://example.com/webhooks/creatomate",
"metadata": "order-123"
}
Use stable names for template fields. If a field is renamed in the design, your integration should fail validation or alert an operator rather than silently producing a video with an unchanged placeholder.
Scene-and-element documents
A movie schema such as Automotion’s groups typed elements into scenes. This is useful when your own application owns the complete composition and needs a predictable JSON representation for every scene, text element, and media element. Keep scene ordering explicit and make optional elements nullable or omit them according to the provider’s schema rules.
How do I submit a JSON render securely?
Submit from a trusted server, not directly from browser JavaScript. The browser can request your backend to create a render, while the backend adds the provider credential and callback URL. This keeps API keys and signing secrets out of page source, browser storage, and mobile application bundles.
- Validate the request. Check required fields, allowed asset domains, text lengths, and output settings. Reject unsupported formats before spending a render credit or queueing a job.
- Build the provider document. Select the timeline, template, or movie schema and insert only data your user is authorized to publish.
- Add a callback address. Shotstack accepts a
callbackin the Edit JSON. Creatomate acceptswebhook_urlin the render request; project-level callback configuration may also be available where supported. - POST with server-side authentication. Send the JSON over HTTPS using the provider’s required authentication header. Never log the credential alongside the request body.
- Persist the acknowledgement immediately. Store the provider name, render ID, internal job ID, submitted document hash, and current status before returning to your caller.
Shotstack documents a 201 Created response with a queued render ID. Creatomate documents a 202 Accepted response containing a render object whose initial status is planned. Treat both responses as queue acceptance; neither means that encoding has finished.

How do webhooks tell me that rendering is finished?
After the job changes state, the rendering service sends an HTTP POST to your callback. A useful callback handler extracts the provider render ID, status, output URL, and any error fields. Success and failure must both be handled because a webhook is an event about the job’s outcome, not merely a “ready” notification.
Statuses to expect
- Queued or planned: the service accepted the request and has not completed it.
- Succeeded: the output can be fetched. Creatomate documents this status explicitly.
- Done: Automotion exposes an
outputUrlat this terminal state. - Failed: inspect the provider’s error fields, retain the original request for diagnosis, and decide whether a corrected retry is safe.
Do not assume every provider uses the same spelling or sequence. Normalize external statuses into your own states, such as queued, rendering, succeeded, and failed, while retaining the original status for support and audits.
How should I build an idempotent webhook endpoint?
Design the callback as an at-least-once event consumer. Providers can retry delivery when your endpoint times out or returns a non-2xx response, so the same render event may arrive more than once.
- Expose an HTTPS POST route. Use a dedicated path for each provider or include a provider identifier in your routing layer. Reject unexpected methods and oversized bodies.
- Authenticate the sender. Verify a provider signature or shared secret when the service offers one. Remotion, for example, documents signed webhook modes for Lambda. If no signature mechanism exists, use an unguessable route, network controls where available, and strict payload validation; do not treat a secret URL as a substitute for authentication in high-risk systems.
- Parse and validate the payload. Require a render ID and recognizable status. Validate that an output URL uses HTTPS before any download request.
- Deduplicate before side effects. Create a unique key from the provider name, render ID, and event status (or event ID when supplied). Insert it transactionally; if it already exists, return 2xx without sending another email, publishing another post, or creating another database record.
- Enqueue durable work. After validation and deduplication, place a small job on your queue and return a fast 2xx response. Downloading a large video should happen in a worker, not while the provider waits for your HTTP response.
- Record every transition. Log your internal job ID, provider render ID, request ID, status, timestamps, and sanitized error fields. Avoid logging access tokens, signed URLs, or user-submitted secrets.
A framework-neutral handler looks like this:
POST /webhooks/provider
verify_signature(raw_body, headers)
event = parse_json(raw_body)
assert event.render_id and event.status
if insert_unique_event(provider, event.render_id, event.status):
enqueue({ render_id: event.render_id, status: event.status })
return 204
Returning success only after durable enqueueing prevents a provider from retrying while your application is still deciding what to do. Returning success before persistence can lose the event if the process crashes immediately afterward.

Should I poll the render job or rely on a webhook?
Use a webhook as the primary completion signal and polling as a recovery mechanism. Webhooks reduce repeated status requests and deliver failure information quickly, while polling can reconcile jobs when a callback is delayed, misconfigured, or lost.
| Approach | Advantages | Risks | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Webhook only | Low request volume; near-real-time completion event | Requires a reachable endpoint, authentication, retries, and deduplication | Production systems with monitored callback delivery |
| Polling only | Simple to understand; no inbound endpoint | Extra API traffic, delayed completion, and rate-limit pressure | Prototypes, private networks, or providers without callbacks |
| Webhook plus polling | Fast normal path with a reconciliation safety net | More moving parts and status-normalization work | High-value or long-running renders |
If you poll, use exponential backoff with a maximum interval and a job deadline. Stop polling after a terminal status, and mark a job as unknown or timed_out when the provider gives no answer by your operational deadline. A scheduled reconciler can query nonterminal jobs and repair missed callbacks without creating duplicate downstream work.
How do I download and retain the finished video?
Copy the output as soon as a worker receives a successful event. Render endpoints are not a durable media library, and a URL can expire even though your database still says the job succeeded.
- Shotstack: its current tutorial says the temporary output URL expires after 24 hours.
- Creatomate: its webhook documentation says rendered files are hosted for up to 30 days.
- Automotion: the completion payload exposes an
outputUrl; the supplied documentation does not establish a retention period, so treat it as temporary until the provider states otherwise.
In the worker, fetch the URL over HTTPS, stream the response to storage you control, verify the response status and content length, and record a checksum or storage version. Save the durable URL separately from the provider URL. If the download fails, retry with bounded backoff while the provider URL remains valid; after expiry, a new render may be required.

- A client sends video data to your application.
- Your API authenticates the client, validates content, and writes a
render_jobsrow with an internal ID and statusqueued. - A server worker constructs the provider JSON and submits the authenticated POST.
- The worker stores the provider render ID and changes the job to
submittedafter receiving201 Createdor202 Accepted. - The provider renders asynchronously and calls your HTTPS webhook.
- The webhook verifies and deduplicates the event, then enqueues a completion job.
- The completion worker updates the normalized status. For success, it downloads the output and writes a durable storage reference; for failure, it records provider diagnostics and an actionable retry state.
- A separate reconciler polls nonterminal jobs and compares provider status with your database, repairing gaps without repeating side effects.
Keep the internal job ID independent of the provider render ID. This allows a retry or provider migration to create a new external render while preserving one customer-facing job history.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The API returns an immediate validation error | Missing required fields, malformed JSON, inaccessible assets, or unsupported output settings | Validate locally, confirm asset permissions, and store the provider’s field-level error before changing the request |
| The request is accepted but no callback arrives | Callback URL is private, DNS or TLS is invalid, route rejects the provider, or the event was lost | Test the public HTTPS route, inspect ingress logs, return a fast 2xx after enqueueing, and let a reconciler poll the render |
| The same success event triggers two publications | Retry delivery was processed without a unique event key | Deduplicate by provider render ID plus event status or supplied event ID before side effects |
| The callback says success but the file cannot be fetched | Temporary URL expired, download worker lacked access, or the provider returned a transient error | Copy outputs immediately, retry within the retention window, and preserve provider URL and response diagnostics |
| Videos contain old template text | Modification key no longer matches the template layer or the wrong template ID was used | Version template identifiers, test required modification keys, and fail closed when a replacement is not applied |
| Renders remain queued indefinitely | Provider-side backlog, invalid status handling, or a job record that was never updated | Use a deadline, poll for reconciliation, show a support-facing external render ID, and retry only when the provider documents that it is safe |
What security controls are essential?
- Store API keys and webhook secrets in server-side secret storage, not source control or client bundles.
- Use HTTPS for both render submission and callbacks, and rotate credentials according to your operational policy.
- Allow only approved asset hosts and validate downloaded content type and size.
- Authenticate webhook requests and preserve the raw body when signature verification requires it.
- Rate-limit your public render endpoint so one user cannot exhaust your rendering quota.
- Redact tokens, signed URLs, personal data, and full media payloads from logs.
- Apply authorization checks when a callback updates an internal job; a valid provider event must not let one tenant modify another tenant’s record.
How should I choose between webhook and polling for a first release?
For a prototype, polling a saved render ID can be the shortest path to a working result. For a production workflow that publishes or notifies users, configure the provider callback, implement idempotency, and retain polling as a repair path. The decisive design choices are the provider’s JSON model, callback security, status semantics, and output retention—not whether the initial request happens to return quickly.

Can I test a video-rendering webhook on localhost?
A provider cannot normally deliver an HTTP callback to a private localhost address. Use a temporary HTTPS tunnel only for development, or deploy a staging endpoint with its own secret and test data; never expose production credentials through a shared tunnel.
What if a webhook arrives before my render record is visible to the callback worker?
Make the callback consumer retry lookup briefly or place the event in a durable holding queue keyed by provider render ID. A reconciliation process can attach the event once the submission transaction becomes visible, avoiding a false failure.
Can one endpoint handle callbacks from several rendering providers?
Yes, but route each provider through its own signature verification and parser before converting events to a shared internal status model. Keep provider name and external render ID in the deduplication key so identical IDs from different services cannot collide.
How much custom data can a Remotion webhook carry?
Remotion’s current webhook-custom-data documentation limits JSON-serializable custom data to 1,024 bytes. Put only a compact correlation key in that field and keep larger business context in your database.
