If Jellyfin’s server disk dies, a backup stored only on that same disk may be lost with the server. Jellyfin’s built-in backup creates an archive, but the archive is not independent until you copy it to another physical device or an off-site location. The practical lesson is simple: keep the live server data where Jellyfin expects it, then store a separate backup somewhere the server’s failed drive cannot take with it.
How can a Jellyfin backup disappear with the server?
A backup is useful against a failed drive only if it survives that drive. Jellyfin’s built-in Backup system writes a ZIP archive under the server’s data directory by default. If the archive stays on the same disk as Jellyfin’s database and configuration, a disk failure can remove both the working server and the archive intended to protect it.

That is the difference between having an archive and having an independent backup. An archive is a packaged copy of selected data; independence describes where that copy is stored. A ZIP file beside the original data can help with some recovery situations, but it does not protect against the loss of the physical storage holding both.
In this failure scenario, the remedy is not to make the archive more elaborate. It is to place a copy beyond the failed disk’s reach: for example, on a separate external drive, or in an off-site location. Jellyfin’s documentation describes its backup and restore mechanisms, but does not endorse a particular storage vendor.

What does Jellyfin’s backup contain?
Jellyfin’s default library metadata database is an SQLite file named jellyfin.db in the data directory. The database is central to preserving the server’s library state and related information; Jellyfin specifically advises backing it up before changing advanced database settings.
The built-in Backup system always includes the database. It can also include metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data, depending on what is selected for the backup. It packages the selected content in a ZIP archive and offers a restore path through the Dashboard or a command-line option. An archive that includes only the database is not equivalent to one that also includes those optional files, so note what was selected when you create it.
A manual backup is different: with the server stopped, copy the complete data and configuration directories. Jellyfin’s official instruction is: “Stop the running Jellyfin server process.” Copying while it is still running is not the documented manual-backup procedure. The complete-directory copy and the built-in archive are two distinct ways to preserve server state; keep track of which kind you have, and where it is stored.

What the backup does not establish
The documented archive contents concern Jellyfin’s database and optional server-side files, not a promise that the media library’s original films, shows, or music are included. Treat the media files as a separate asset to protect. The recovery process also depends on restoring to a compatible Jellyfin version and keeping expected paths intact; a backup does not make those compatibility and path details irrelevant.
How do I restore Jellyfin after replacing a dead drive?
First determine what survived: a built-in ZIP archive or a copy of the complete data and configuration directories. Both must be on storage that was not attached to the failed disk. Then restore using the matching method, while preserving the existing saved copy until the recovered server has been checked.
- Install a compatible version. Set up the same Jellyfin version used by the failed server when possible, or a compatible version, on replacement storage. Jellyfin applies migrations when it starts, and it does not provide a downgrade mechanism, so do not assume a newer migrated data set can be rolled back by installing an older release.
- Find the independent backup. Locate the ZIP archive or copied directories on the separate device or off-site storage. If the only copy was on the failed drive, it may not be recoverable from that drive; the restoration steps require a surviving copy.
- Restore an archive, if that is what you have. Use the Dashboard’s restore flow, or start Jellyfin with
--restore-archive PATH_TO_BACKUP_ZIP, substituting the path to the saved ZIP file. Use the archive that you intend to restore, and retain an untouched copy until you have confirmed the result. - Restore a manual directory copy, if that is what you have. Stop Jellyfin. Move any newly created data and configuration directories aside rather than overwriting them immediately, then copy the saved directories into the expected paths. Start the compatible Jellyfin version only after the copies are in place.
- Check the restored server before cleanup. Verify that users, libraries, settings, and playback history are present. Also check that the media mount paths still resolve. Keep the moved-aside new directories and the original backup until those checks are complete, so you have a fallback if the restored state is incomplete.
Why do version and path details matter?
Jellyfin changes internal data as versions evolve through startup migrations. The project does not provide a downgrade mechanism. A backup made before an upgrade is therefore especially valuable: if the upgrade does not leave the server in a usable state, the preserved pre-upgrade copy gives you a recovery point, but you should not treat it as permission to start an old version against data that has already been migrated.

Paths matter because Jellyfin’s internal databases are not easy to copy or adjust. When replacing storage, preserve the expected data and configuration paths where possible, and ensure the locations Jellyfin uses for media remain valid. If those paths change, recovery may require more than restoring the archive: libraries can depend on the locations being accessible to the server.
Before replacing hardware or changing an installation, record the Jellyfin version, data path, configuration path, archive date, and which optional content the archive included. These notes make it easier to select the right copy and place it where the restored installation expects it. They also help distinguish a missing-library-path problem from an incomplete restoration.
How should I design a backup that survives another dead drive?
Keep the live Jellyfin database local for normal operation; Jellyfin says the database should not be stored on network storage. Make the backup independent instead: place an archive or complete directory copy on a separate physical device, such as an external hard drive, and preferably maintain another copy off-site. The important property is separation from the server’s storage, not the brand or type of a particular product.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Separate the copy physically or geographically. A second copy on the same failed disk is not protection from that disk’s failure. An external device disconnected or otherwise independent from the server, or a copy held off-site, addresses that shared point of failure.
- Choose what to preserve deliberately. The built-in system always includes the database and can include metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data. Consider what matters for your restoration, and record the selection with the archive date.
- Keep useful recovery notes. Save the Jellyfin version and the data and configuration paths alongside the backup information. This is particularly useful when restoring on replacement hardware, where defaults or mount points may differ.
- Create a fresh backup before upgrades. Keep it until you have checked the upgraded server. Major-version upgrades are a reason backups matter because migrations run on startup.
- Test the restore path. A restore drill on replacement hardware or a test instance can expose missing files, incorrect paths, or a process you do not remember. Jellyfin documents restore procedures, but the project does not publish a Jellyfin-specific success-rate statistic for restore tests.
Should the backup go on an external drive, a NAS, or off-site?
There is no single choice established as best for every installation. Evaluate any destination by whether it is independent from the Jellyfin host, has enough capacity for the archive and the optional content you select, protects privacy through appropriate encryption, retains older versions, restores quickly enough for your needs, and allows you to test recovery without disrupting the live server.
A NAS can be a separate destination from the server’s local storage, but do not confuse that with a recommendation to put the live Jellyfin database on network storage: Jellyfin advises against the latter. An off-site copy can add protection from events that affect the host and nearby storage together, while an external drive may be simpler to retrieve for a local restore. The useful question is how each option fits your risks and how you will verify a restore, not whether a device is labeled a backup destination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check if the server starts but looks empty?
A successful start does not by itself prove that the original server state was restored. Check the specific things the backup is meant to preserve, then investigate paths if the expected libraries or media are unavailable.

- Confirm the restore method and source. Check that you restored the intended ZIP archive or copied the saved data and configuration directories, rather than relying on a newly created empty installation.
- Check expected paths. Verify that the restored data and configuration are in the paths used by the installation and that media mount paths still resolve.
- Check what the archive included. The database is always included in the built-in backup; metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data are optional. Their absence may reflect what was selected, rather than a failure to restore the database.
- Keep recovery copies intact while diagnosing. Do not discard the original archive or moved-aside directories before verifying users, libraries, settings, and playback history.
If the only archive was located in the failed server’s data directory, the central problem is that no independent copy survived. A restore command cannot restore an archive that is no longer available; recovery then depends on finding another saved copy outside that failed storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Jellyfin backup include my movie and TV files?
The documented built-in backup is for the database and selected server-side content such as metadata, subtitles, and trickplay data. It does not establish that the original media files are inside the ZIP, so protect those files separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I restore Jellyfin’s database from a network share?
Jellyfin advises keeping the live database off network storage. That guidance concerns where the running database lives; it does not by itself prescribe how to store every backup copy.
Will an older Jellyfin version open a backup made by a newer version?
Do not assume so. Jellyfin applies migrations at startup and provides no downgrade mechanism, which is why version compatibility should be considered before restoring or upgrading.
How can I tell whether my backup is really independent?
Ask whether the copy would still be available if the server’s physical disk failed or the host became inaccessible. If the only archive is stored under that server’s data directory on the same disk, it does not meet that test.
