Yes—JBL Live Buds 4 are a credible AirPods alternative if you value detailed sound, a secure fit and controls built into the charging case. JBL’s 2026 earbuds use 10 mm dynamic drivers, Bluetooth 6.0, Hi-Res Audio and IP55 protection. Their unusual Smart Charging Case has a touchscreen for volume, track changes, EQ and noise-control settings, reducing how often you need to reach for your phone.
They are not a universal winner. TechRadar’s three-week test found rich, articulate audio and a responsive case, but less convincing active noise cancellation (ANC), call quality and spatial audio than the best competing earbuds. The right choice therefore depends on whether case-based controls and JBL’s sound matter more to you than class-leading ANC or deep integration with an Apple device.

What are the JBL Live Buds 4?
The Live Buds 4 are JBL’s compact in-ear true-wireless model introduced in 2026. Each earbud uses a 10 mm dynamic driver, with a published frequency response of 20 Hz–40 kHz. JBL also lists Bluetooth 6.0, Hi-Res Audio support and an IP55 ingress rating. IP55 means the earbuds are protected against dust and low-pressure water jets; it is not a rating for swimming or deliberate submersion.
The headline feature is the Smart Charging Case. Instead of serving only as a battery box, it includes a small touchscreen that exposes controls normally found in a phone app. The case weighs 71 g according to JBL’s specification, so it is more substantial than a basic charging case, but it can make daily adjustments faster when your phone is in a pocket or bag.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
JBL executive Carsten Olesen described the approach as an evolution of the company’s Smart Charging Case technology: “Since we first introduced the Smart Charging CaseTM four years ago, we have used the industry-leading technology to continue innovating – first with the SMART Tx, and now with the refined user interface – to allow a more seamless experience than ever before.”
What can you do from the touchscreen case?
The touchscreen is the Live Buds 4’s clearest point of difference. TechRadar found it highly responsive and reported that it can handle core listening controls without opening the phone app.
Recommended Free Tools
- Playback: adjust volume and skip tracks.
- Sound: select EQ settings and change listening modes.
- Noise control: switch ANC modes and related ambient-listening settings.
- Utilities: access appearance options, a flashlight and a timer.
These controls are useful when you are walking, commuting or sharing a phone with someone else. You can leave the phone locked and still make a quick adjustment. The trade-off is physical size and complexity: a case with a screen has more software to maintain than a conventional case, and you must keep its display charged along with the earbuds.
TechRadar sometimes preferred the phone app because its larger screen made menus easier to read. The case is best for quick changes; the app remains more comfortable for browsing several EQ or noise-control options and checking settings at length.
How good is the Live Buds 4 sound?
The strongest part of the Live Buds 4 is sound quality. In a three-week test, TechRadar described the presentation as detailed, impactful and rich, and awarded sound quality 4.5 out of 5. That combination gives drums and bass convincing weight while retaining enough definition for vocals, guitars and small recording details.
The 10 mm drivers are not proof of quality by themselves; tuning, fit and digital processing matter just as much. In practice, the review’s description suggests a lively presentation rather than a thin or overly clinical one. Listeners who enjoy modern pop, rock, electronic music or films with a strong low end should find plenty of energy, while the reported detail helps acoustic recordings avoid sounding blurred.

Treat it as a driver and electronics specification, not a promise that you will hear 40 kHz or that a wider number automatically beats another earbud’s tuning. The useful evidence is the listening test: TechRadar found the Live Buds 4 articulate and engaging, with a 4.5/5 sound rating.

Hi-Res Audio branding indicates that the earbuds are designed for higher-resolution playback paths, but the benefit depends on the source device, service, Bluetooth implementation and the recording itself. The available data does not establish a universal codec advantage, so buyers should not assume that every phone or music service will deliver the same high-resolution experience.
Is the ANC strong enough for travel and commuting?
ANC works, but it is not the Live Buds 4’s defining strength. TechRadar specifically found noise cancellation less impressive than the best rivals. That means the earbuds can reduce steady background sound, yet a competing premium model may create a quieter cabin on an airplane or a more isolated train ride.
Fit has a large effect on perceived ANC. An incomplete seal lets outside sound leak around the electronic cancellation, especially low-frequency rumble. Try the supplied ear-tip sizes, check that each bud sits securely, and compare the result with ANC on and off before judging the hardware.
The touchscreen lets you change ANC modes directly. This is convenient when moving between a quiet room, a street and public transport. If you frequently need maximum isolation, however, prioritize independent tests of the specific rival you are considering rather than buying the Live Buds 4 solely for the presence of an ANC switch.
How clear are calls and how good is spatial audio?
Call quality is another area where the Live Buds 4 trail the strongest alternatives in TechRadar’s testing. The review says calls could be better, so they are suitable for ordinary conversations but not the safest choice for people who spend much of the day in windy streets or noisy offices.
Spatial audio is also less convincing than on the best rivals according to the same review. That matters for listeners who watch a lot of immersive video or want a strong head-tracking effect. For normal stereo music, spatial processing is optional; for films and supported games, the difference is easier to notice.
How long does the battery last with ANC?
JBL rates the Live Buds 4 for up to 10 hours per charge with ANC off and up to 8 hours with ANC on. Those are manufacturer maximums, so actual runtime varies with volume, wireless conditions, call use and other features.

JBL’s regional specification wording also lists up to 40 hours of total playtime. Because JBL pages publish different total-case figures under different stated test conditions, do not treat every “40 hours” claim as interchangeable. The individual-earbud figures above identify the ANC condition; check the regional product page and current manual for the exact case-test definition where you buy.
For a typical workday, the eight-hour ANC rating is the more relevant number. It may cover a full shift, commute and evening listening, but heavy calling or high volume can reduce the margin. If you need multi-day use away from a power outlet, compare total-case ratings only when the brands have tested them under comparable ANC and volume conditions.
Are the Live Buds 4 comfortable and durable?
TechRadar rated the design 4.5 out of 5 and found the fit secure during its three-week test. A secure seal supports bass response and ANC, and it reduces the chance of an earbud loosening during a walk. Comfort remains personal: ear shape, tip size and how far the housing sits in the ear can matter more than a review score.
The IP55 rating is useful for sweat, dust and light water exposure during everyday activity. It does not make the earbuds waterproof. Keep the case dry, wipe moisture from the earbuds before charging, and avoid showers, pools and submersion.
How do the JBL Live Buds 4 compare with AirPods Pro 3?
AirPods Pro 3 are the more logical choice for buyers committed to Apple’s ecosystem or seeking stronger ANC and spatial-audio performance. The Live Buds 4 answer with richer sound in the test evidence, a secure fit and a touchscreen case that exposes more controls without a phone.
| Category | JBL Live Buds 4 | AirPods Pro 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Sound character | Detailed, impactful and rich in TechRadar’s three-week test; sound rating 4.5/5. | Not stated in the cited evidence. |
| ANC | Functional, but TechRadar found it less impressive than the best rivals. | Stronger ANC is identified in the comparison framework. |
| Call quality | Usable, though the review says it could be better. | Not stated in the cited evidence. |
| Battery with ANC | Up to 8 hours per charge with ANC on, according to JBL. | Comparable figure under the same test condition: not stated in the cited evidence. |
| Case controls | Touchscreen for volume, track skipping, EQ, ANC modes and utilities. | Touchscreen case controls: not stated in the cited evidence. |
| Phone ecosystem | Designed to work across Bluetooth devices; specific ecosystem advantages are not established here. | Apple ecosystem integration is the stronger option in the comparison framework. |
| Spatial audio | Less impressive than the best rivals in TechRadar’s assessment. | Stronger spatial-audio experience is identified in the comparison framework. |
| Water resistance | IP55 for the earbuds. | Comparable rating: not stated in the cited evidence. |
| Launch price | €199.99 in JBL’s May 2026 EU announcement; £179.99 in the UK announcement. | Price: not stated in the cited evidence. |
This is not a simple specification victory. Choose the JBL model when the case screen solves a real annoyance and you prefer its energetic, detailed tuning. Choose AirPods Pro 3 when Apple-device integration, stronger ANC or more advanced spatial audio carries greater weight.
What did the Live Buds 4 cost at launch?
JBL announced a May 2026 launch price of €199.99 in Europe and £179.99 in the UK. Which? showed a lowest retailer price of £179.97 when it was accessed in 2026, only slightly below the UK launch figure. Prices, stock and regional availability can change, so treat those figures as dated reference points rather than a permanent street price.

At around the launch level, the case screen must be part of your value calculation. If you rarely change ANC or playback settings, a less expensive conventional case may offer better value. If you regularly adjust controls away from your phone, the screen can justify paying for a more distinctive design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How should you set up the Live Buds 4?
- Charge everything first. Put both earbuds in the case and charge the case before pairing. Confirm that each earbud registers as charging.
- Pair from your phone. Open Bluetooth settings, select the Live Buds 4 and complete the pairing prompt. Keep the buds close to the phone during this first connection.
- Install JBL’s companion app. Use it for the larger settings view, EQ choices, ANC configuration and firmware checks. The app is more practical than the case screen for initial setup.
- Update firmware. JBL support release notes list a June 24, 2026 case-software release, version 26.25.10, plus an earlier Android clock-synchronization update. Check the current release notes for your region before troubleshooting unusual case behavior.
- Fit the ear tips. Try the available sizes, then walk and speak briefly to check for movement or bass loss. A stable seal improves both comfort and noise reduction.
- Customize the case. Set your preferred EQ and ANC behavior, then test volume and track controls from the touchscreen so you know the gestures before commuting.
What are the main drawbacks?
- ANC is not class-leading. The review evidence favors rivals when maximum isolation is the priority.
- Calls are merely adequate. Frequent outdoor or office callers should test microphone performance before committing.
- Spatial audio is not a standout feature. Immersive-video enthusiasts may prefer another model.
- The case adds software complexity. A touchscreen is useful, but it creates another interface and another component whose firmware may need updates.
- Battery figures need context. The 10-hour and 8-hour numbers are per-charge maximums, while the 40-hour total appears in regional wording with test-condition differences.
Who should buy the JBL Live Buds 4?
Buy them if you want rich, detailed sound, a secure in-ear fit and the ability to change key settings from the case. They are especially appealing to people who use multiple Bluetooth devices and do not want every adjustment to depend on a phone app.
Look elsewhere if your top priorities are the quietest possible airplane cabin, consistently clear calls in noisy places, or the deepest Apple ecosystem integration. The Live Buds 4 are a distinctive, capable option—not a universal replacement for every premium earbud.
JBL Live Buds 4 FAQ
Can I use the Live Buds 4 with an iPhone?
Yes. They connect over Bluetooth, so an iPhone can play music and handle calls. The comparison advantage of AirPods Pro 3 is deeper Apple ecosystem integration, not basic Bluetooth compatibility.
Does IP55 mean I can swim with the earbuds?
No. IP55 covers dust protection and low-pressure water exposure, not submersion. Remove the earbuds before swimming or showering and dry them before placing them in the case.
What should I do if the case touchscreen behaves oddly?
Check the case firmware in JBL’s companion app and compare your version with the latest regional support release notes. JBL listed case software version 26.25.10 on June 24, 2026, so an update may resolve a behavior that an older firmware build still shows.
Is the 40-hour battery claim guaranteed?
No. It is an “up to” regional specification figure, and JBL publishes total-case numbers under different stated test conditions. Use the ANC-specific per-charge ratings—up to 10 hours with ANC off and up to 8 hours with ANC on—for a clearer planning estimate.
