JBL Cove is a Wi-Fi whole-home speaker system built around three models—M1, P1 and X1—that you can use individually, pair for stereo, or group across rooms in the JBL One app. It supports major wireless playback options including AirPlay 2, Google Cast and Spotify Connect, and compatible JBL Bar MK2 soundbars can use Cove speakers as rear channels. The right model depends mainly on room size, portability and whether you want Dolby Atmos: M1 is the compact option, P1 adds a battery and IP56 rating, and X1 is the larger-room flagship.
What is JBL Cove?
JBL Cove is JBL’s Wi-Fi speaker family for listening in one room or distributing audio around a home. Its three speakers—Cove M1, Cove P1 and Cove X1—can work on their own, as stereo pairs or in multi-room groups controlled through the JBL One app. You can play audio throughout the home, keep it in one room, or assign different music to different rooms.

HARMAN announced Cove on September 1, 2026, describing it as a system intended to make whole-home audio simpler to set up and use. That positioning is supported by the system’s app-based setup and grouping, multiple streaming choices, and a physical Moment button for selected playback actions. It does not mean that every feature is app-free: the JBL One app is the control point for setup and managing the system, while the button offers a shortcut for saved content and moving playback.
Cove is not just a set of three differently sized speakers. The models share Wi-Fi-based multi-room features, automatic self-tuning and Constant Sound Field, while differing in portability, Dolby Atmos support and physical configuration. The P1 and X1 support Dolby Atmos; the M1 does not appear among the Atmos-capable models in JBL’s announcement.

Which JBL Cove speaker should you buy?
Choose M1 for a compact speaker in a small or medium room, P1 if you want to carry a speaker between rooms or use it away from an outlet, and X1 if you want the largest model for a bigger room or as a centerpiece. P1 and X1 are the choices if Dolby Atmos support matters to you.
| Model | Best fit | Key details | US list price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cove M1 | Small to medium rooms | Compact Wi-Fi speaker; automatic self-tuning; stereo-pair and multi-room capable | $229.95 |
| Cove P1 | Portable, room-to-room listening | Up to 14 hours of battery life; IP56 rated; Dolby Atmos; automatic self-tuning | $399.95 |
| Cove X1 | Larger rooms or a centerpiece speaker | Dolby Atmos; four tweeters and dual 4-inch woofers; automatic self-tuning | $449.95 |
These are JBL’s official US list prices reported in 2026, not a promise of the price at every retailer or in every region. JBL describes X1 as its large-room flagship, but the available specifications do not give an output rating or measured room-size limit. There are no independent lab measurements or third-party listening tests in the available evidence, so treat “room-filling” as JBL’s product positioning rather than a verified performance result.

When does the M1 make sense?
M1 is the straightforward choice when you want a compact Wi-Fi speaker for a smaller listening space and do not need the P1’s battery or the Dolby Atmos support found on P1 and X1. It can join a stereo pair or multi-room group, so choosing the smallest speaker does not prevent you from building a broader Cove setup later.
When is the P1 worth the step up?
P1 adds the system’s portable option: JBL specifies up to 14 hours of battery life and an IP56 rating. The battery figure is a maximum, not a guaranteed runtime in every use; JBL’s supplied specification does not state the test conditions. The IP56 rating identifies the model as rated for protection against dust and water exposure, but does not make it waterproof or establish a specific use case beyond that rating.

P1 also supports Dolby Atmos. Consider it if you want the option to move a speaker between rooms and value Atmos support, rather than paying more simply because it is the middle model. The published information does not provide a like-for-like measured output comparison with M1 or X1.
Who should choose the X1?
X1 is designed for larger rooms and centerpiece use. Its listed hardware includes four tweeters and two 4-inch woofers, and it supports Dolby Atmos. It costs $50 more than P1 at the reported US list prices, but does not offer P1’s stated portability and battery advantage. Choose it for its intended larger-room role and driver configuration, not on the assumption that a published numerical loudness comparison exists.

Can JBL Cove speakers play different music in different rooms?
Yes. Cove supports both whole-home playback and room-by-room listening: you can group speakers to play throughout the home, limit playback to one room, or assign different music to different rooms. The JBL One app is the control point for setting up speakers and managing those groups.
This flexibility matters when household members do not want to hear the same thing. A shared group suits music that should follow everyone through the home; separate room playback suits different listening choices. The announcement does not specify a maximum number of speakers or groups, so do not assume a particular system size from the multi-room feature alone.

How do you set up JBL Cove?
JBL describes setup in JBL One as a three-step process. The available product information does not publish exact screen names or a detailed troubleshooting flow, so the sequence below reflects the stated setup stages without guessing at app labels.
- Open JBL One and begin adding a Cove speaker. Use the app’s setup flow to connect the speaker to your system.
- Configure the speaker and its room. Follow the app prompts for the speaker’s initial configuration and room assignment.
- Choose how you want to listen. Use the app to play in a room, create stereo pairs, or group speakers for multi-room playback.
Once the system is configured, automatic self-tuning is intended to adjust each speaker to its surroundings. JBL also says Cove uses Constant Sound Field. These are system features, not a substitute for placement choices: the supplied product information does not specify exact positioning distances or room-calibration measurements.

The Moment button is a physical shortcut for starting saved content or moving playback with the listener through “Music Follows Me.” JBL says it can invoke saved playlists, radio or Spotify Tap, so you do not need to reach for a phone or open the app for those button actions.
That convenience is narrower than full app-free control. The app remains part of setup and system management, and the button’s saved-content behavior depends on the content or service configured for it. The product information does not list every supported service or explain the exact sequence for programming a Moment action.

Which music services and wireless connections does Cove support?
JBL lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, plus AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Roon Ready, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect. This gives listeners several ways to send audio from compatible devices and services without relying on a single streaming ecosystem.
These names describe supported connection or playback options, not a claim that every service works identically on every phone, account or network. If you rely on a specific service, confirm its current availability and setup requirements in the service and JBL documentation for your region before buying. The product announcement does not provide a complete regional service-availability matrix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes JBL Cove work with JBL soundbars?
Yes, with compatible JBL Bar MK2 soundbars. Cove speakers can serve as rear channels in an expanded Dolby Atmos home-theater setup, giving a buyer a path from standalone or multi-room listening to a compatible soundbar-based arrangement.
Compatibility is specifically described for compatible Bar MK2 models; it should not be generalized to every JBL soundbar. The available product details do not identify the full list of compatible Bar MK2 models or explain whether every Cove speaker can fill the rear-channel role. Check the compatibility information for the exact soundbar and speaker combination before planning a system.

Is JBL Cove easier to set up than a traditional multi-room system?
JBL presents Cove as an accessible alternative built around three-step setup in JBL One, flexible speaker grouping and several familiar wireless playback options. Those features can make day-to-day operation easier for someone who wants room-by-room control without managing separate speaker systems.
There is not enough comparative evidence to say Cove is objectively easier than every traditional multi-room system. No controlled setup comparison, time-to-completion test or independent usability study is provided. A practical way to judge the fit is to ask whether the JBL One app, your preferred streaming method and the available speaker sizes match how your household listens.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all JBL Cove speakers need to stay plugged in?
No. The P1 is specified as a battery-powered portable model with up to 14 hours of battery life. The available product details do not state a battery option for M1 or X1.
Can I use a Cove speaker without the JBL One app?
The Moment button can start configured saved content or invoke Music Follows Me without using a phone for that action. JBL’s setup and system-management description still centers on the JBL One app.
Does the JBL Cove M1 support Dolby Atmos?
JBL identifies P1 and X1 as the Atmos-supporting models; M1 is not identified as Atmos-capable in the published product details.
Can I use a Cove speaker as a rear speaker with any JBL soundbar?
No broad compatibility claim is established. JBL specifies use with compatible Bar MK2 soundbars, so verify the exact model pairing rather than assuming all JBL soundbars work.
