Jac and LangChain solve agent development at different layers. Jac makes agent behavior part of a programming language, compiler and runtime, with graph objects, walkers and compiler-integrated AI. LangChain is a framework that composes models, tools, messages, integrations, agent loops and middleware; its lower-level LangGraph runtime adds durable stateful workflows. Choose Jac when your application is fundamentally a graph that computation must traverse, or when one language should cover application code and AI behavior. Choose LangChain when you want a conventional, provider-neutral agent framework with a broad integration surface and an incremental path from a standard tool-calling loop to custom orchestration.

What is the fundamental difference between Jac and LangChain?

Jac treats an agent as a program expressed in a language designed to combine ordinary computation, graph data and AI delegation. LangChain treats an agent as a framework composition: a model receives messages and tools, an agent loop decides what to call, and middleware or a workflow runtime controls what happens around that loop.

This is an architectural distinction, not a performance ranking. The available documentation does not provide a controlled Jac-versus-LangChain comparison for speed, token cost, accuracy or developer productivity.

How does Jac build an AI agent?

Jac’s reference describes a complete language and toolchain rather than a library added to an existing language. The language, its compiler/runtime (jaclang, delivered through the jac binary) and the wider Jaseci ecosystem are related but distinct terms. That distinction matters when you evaluate a project: you are adopting language syntax, compilation and runtime conventions as well as an agent API.

AI is a language feature

Jac’s defining design choice is compiler-integrated AI through the by and sem keywords. A function can be declared so that its implementation is delegated to a large language model with by llm(), rather than being written entirely as conventional imperative code. The compiler can use the function’s name, parameter names, types, return type and semantic annotations when constructing the request sent to the model. Those declarations become part of the contract between your program and the model.

This changes prompt maintenance. Instead of keeping every instruction in a separate string template, a developer can express intent in the function declaration and its semantic hints. The approach does not remove the need to design good instructions, validate outputs or handle model failures; it moves part of that design into source-level structure that the compiler understands.

byLLM standardizes model access

Jac documents byLLM as a common access layer across AI providers, with integrated model management. A project can therefore treat model invocation as a language-level capability rather than wiring each provider through a separate framework adapter. The practical benefit is conceptual consistency: model-backed functions and ordinary Jac functions can participate in the same program and can be exposed through the same surrounding application.

Graphs are the native state model

Jac uses a persistent object-spatial graph. Nodes and edges represent application entities and relationships; a root provides an entry point; walkers move computation through the topology. This is more than a diagram of an agent workflow. The graph is the data and execution context in which the program operates, so an agent can follow relationships, update objects and continue from graph state that persists beyond one model call.

That model is a natural fit for applications such as relationship-rich knowledge systems, entity networks, simulations and multi-step tasks in which the next operation depends on where the computation is in the graph. It also gives you a language-level way to describe movement and access rather than manually passing a growing collection of identifiers between separate framework callbacks.

Tools, orchestration and walkers share one program

Jac’s agentic tutorial shows that regular Jac functions can be passed as tools. The documented flow includes tool calling, orchestration across multiple tools, a ReAct-style reasoning pattern, methods attached to objects and combinations of agents with graph walkers. In design terms, a tool need not be a remote microservice or a special wrapper: it can be a normal function with the inputs and return type that the agent needs.

When an agent is combined with a walker, model-directed decisions and deterministic graph traversal can coexist. The model can select or sequence tools, while the walker provides a bounded route through known graph structures. This is useful when you want the agent to reason about what to do but still constrain where computation and data access can go.

One toolchain spans more than the agent loop

The Jac reference covers syntax, types, graph objects, walkers, concurrency, native compilation, byLLM, deployment and plugins. Its stated goal is a single language that can target server, client, native and AI capabilities. The documented interoperability with Python, npm and C can help an existing team connect Jac code to other ecosystems, but the central programming model remains Jac rather than Python with an agent package.

How does LangChain build an AI agent?

LangChain starts from a conventional framework model: select a chat model, define tools, provide messages or a prompt, and run an agent loop that lets the model call tools until it has a final response. Its product documentation describes create_agent as a pre-built agent architecture using a ReAct-style loop on the LangGraph runtime.

The standard loop is intentionally familiar

At the core, the agent receives input, sends the current context and available tools to the model, executes any tool calls the model requests, appends the resulting AI and tool messages to state, and repeats until the model stops requesting tools. This shape is easy to explain to a team already working with model APIs: the model chooses an action, the application executes it, and the result goes back into the conversation.

LangChain’s abstractions separate models, messages, tools and integrations. That separation lets you change a provider or tool without rewriting the entire agent architecture. It also gives the framework a large surface for provider-specific capabilities while keeping the application-facing composition relatively consistent.

Middleware is the control surface around the loop

LangChain’s middleware documentation describes hooks at model and tool boundaries. Middleware can modify context before a model call, enforce a policy before a tool runs, transform or compress context, handle sensitive data, request human approval, or add other control behavior. This is an incremental approach: start with a standard agent and add policies where the application needs them instead of implementing a complete custom runtime on day one.

Middleware is particularly valuable when the model loop is acceptable but the surrounding rules are not static. For example, an application may attach different instructions according to the authenticated user, redact a field before it reaches a model, or pause a high-impact tool for approval. Those concerns remain explicit framework code rather than hidden in a prompt alone.

LangGraph is the lower-level runtime

LangGraph is the control layer for workflows that need more than a repeated model-and-tools loop. The official stack description positions it as a runtime for deterministic and agentic workflows with custom state transitions, persistence, streaming, interrupts, retries, fault tolerance and explicit multi-agent coordination. You use it when the order of operations, recovery behavior or handoffs must be represented directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean every LangChain application requires you to author a graph from scratch. The high-level create_agent path uses the LangGraph runtime underneath, while direct LangGraph development gives you more control over state and transitions. The architectural choice is therefore about how much of that control you expose in your own code.

Deep Agents adds a ready-made harness

The open-source stack overview places Deep Agents above LangChain as a ready-made harness for planning, memory, context management, subagents and execution environments. LangChain remains the framework layer for model and tool abstractions, middleware, MCP and integrations; LangGraph remains the lower-level runtime. This layered structure lets a team adopt a packaged harness, a conventional framework agent or a custom workflow according to the complexity of the task.

How do Jac and LangChain represent state and graphs?

The word graph means different things in the two ecosystems. In Jac, the persistent object-spatial graph is the application’s native data and execution model. In LangChain, graph structure becomes a workflow concern when you use LangGraph to define state transitions and durable execution.

Jac: the application lives in the graph

A Jac graph contains domain objects and relationships, and walkers provide a way for computation to travel through them. If an agent needs to find related entities, update a node and then continue along an edge, those operations can be expressed as movement and actions in the same graph model. Persistence is part of the model rather than an add-on conversation store.

LangChain and LangGraph: the workflow lives in state transitions

A LangChain agent normally exposes conversational state as messages plus tool results. When the application needs durable, inspectable control, LangGraph lets you define the state, transitions and interruption points explicitly. Persistence, retries and resumability then apply to the workflow, including long-running or human-in-the-loop tasks.

For a graph-based product, ask what the graph represents. If it is the product’s knowledge and relationships, Jac’s object-spatial model puts that structure at the center. If it is primarily the sequence of workflow steps, approvals and recovery paths, LangGraph’s explicit state machine may be the more direct fit. A project can have both kinds of structure, but they lead to different source-code boundaries and operational responsibilities.

How do their prompt and context strategies differ?

Jac derives part of the model request from program declarations. Names, parameter and return types, and sem annotations can communicate intent to the compiler, so the prompt/context contract is tied to the function’s typed interface. This can reduce the amount of behavior that exists only as an unstructured template, while still leaving room for explicit semantic guidance.

LangChain starts with prompts and messages as first-class runtime inputs. Middleware can inject dynamic context, compress a long history, apply policy-specific instructions or alter what a model sees immediately before invocation. The trade-off is familiar framework flexibility: prompt and policy behavior can be changed at runtime, but teams must keep those layers understandable and testable as the application grows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither strategy guarantees a correct answer. Jac’s compiler can assemble a request from declarations, but a model can still misunderstand an instruction or return an invalid value. LangChain middleware can enforce a boundary, but it cannot make an underspecified prompt reliable. In both systems, typed interfaces, validation, retries and explicit failure handling remain engineering responsibilities.

How do tools and integrations work in each approach?

Jac makes ordinary functions available as tools and can attach tool methods to graph objects. The agentic tutorial’s progression from single-tool calls to multi-tool orchestration and a ReAct pattern shows how tool use can stay inside the language. A tool can therefore read or mutate graph data using the same object and walker concepts as the rest of the application.

LangChain treats tools as composable framework objects alongside model and message abstractions. Its provider-neutral integration strategy is designed for applications that may combine different model vendors, search or business APIs, and protocol-based tools. Middleware can inspect or block a call at the tool boundary, which is useful for permissions, approvals and sensitive operations.

The practical difference is where integration complexity is absorbed. Jac aims to make AI, graph access and application code one language-level system. LangChain aims to make many external capabilities interchangeable components. A team with a large existing integration catalog may value the latter; a team whose tools are mostly operations on a persistent domain graph may value the former.

Which is better for graph-based agents?

Jac is the more direct choice when graph topology is central to both data and computation. Its nodes, edges, root and walkers are not merely a visualization of an agent plan, and its tutorial explicitly combines agents, tools and walkers with a knowledge base.

LangChain can also support graph-shaped agent workflows, but the graph is supplied by LangGraph as an explicit control layer. That is a strong option when you need named states, deterministic branches, persistence, retries, interrupts or coordinated agents. It is less of a domain graph model and more of a durable workflow runtime.

Use this distinction to avoid a misleading comparison. If the question is whether an agent can execute a multi-step graph workflow, both ecosystems can represent one. If the question is whether the application’s primary data model and execution model are a persistent object graph, Jac makes that assumption at the language level, while LangChain requires you to design and connect the relevant data and workflow layers.

What are the practical trade-offs for a new project?

Project requirement More natural starting point Why
Persistent entities and relationships are the core product data Jac Nodes, edges, root and walkers are native language/runtime concepts, and agent actions can operate on the same graph
A standard tool-calling assistant with many provider choices LangChain create_agent, model/tool abstractions and broad integrations provide a conventional composition model
Human approvals, retries and resumable long-running work LangGraph within the LangChain stack The documented runtime provides interrupts, persistence, retries and fault-tolerant execution
AI behavior should be expressed in typed declarations Jac by, sem and compiler-derived prompt context put model delegation on the language surface
Policies need to be added around an existing agent without replacing it LangChain middleware Hooks can alter context and enforce rules at model and tool boundaries
One language should span application code, client/server targets and AI Jac The reference presents a single language/toolchain with native compilation, deployment and documented interoperability

These are fit decisions, not claims that one product is universally superior. The more your requirements concern graph-domain semantics and compiler-integrated AI, the more Jac’s distinctive features matter. The more they concern interchangeable integrations, familiar framework composition and incremental policy hooks, the more LangChain’s structure matters.

How should you choose between Jac, LangChain and LangGraph?

Make the decision from the application’s hardest requirement, not from the popularity of a model provider or a sample chatbot.

  1. Describe the state you must preserve. If it is a connected domain of objects that agents traverse and mutate, model that first and evaluate Jac. If it is a conversation plus workflow checkpoints, evaluate LangChain and determine whether LangGraph’s durable state is needed.
  2. List the control points that must be deterministic. Mark approvals, permission checks, retries, timeouts, recovery branches and handoffs. LangChain middleware can cover boundary policies; LangGraph is the better place for explicit transitions and resumability.
  3. Decide where model intent belongs. If typed declarations and semantic annotations should define a model-backed function’s contract, Jac’s by/sem approach is relevant. If prompts and runtime context need to change dynamically through composable hooks, LangChain offers that framework path.
  4. Inventory your integration surface. Count the existing model providers, tools and protocol integrations you must connect. A provider-neutral framework may reduce adapter work; a graph-centered Jac program may reduce glue code when most tools are operations on your own objects.
  5. Choose the smallest layer that satisfies the requirement. Start with LangChain’s standard agent when a loop is enough, add middleware for policies, and move to direct LangGraph control when transitions and durability become first-class. Start with Jac’s ordinary functions and byLLM delegation, then use graph objects, walkers and orchestration where the domain needs them.
  6. Test failure behavior before comparing demos. Exercise malformed tool arguments, unavailable models, duplicate requests, interrupted approvals and partial updates. The architecture that makes these cases explicit for your team is usually a better long-term fit than the one with the most attractive happy-path example.

Can Jac and LangChain be combined?

They can coexist at an organizational level, but combining them is an architectural integration rather than a drop-in switch. Jac’s compiler/runtime and graph model define one set of program boundaries, while LangChain’s model, tool, message and middleware abstractions define another. A team would need to decide which system owns state, tool execution, retries and observability, then expose a narrow interface between them.

A sensible boundary is to keep a graph-centric domain service in Jac and call it through a controlled tool interface from a LangChain agent, or to let a LangChain workflow invoke a Jac capability that owns graph traversal. Avoid having both runtimes independently mutate the same state without a clear transaction and failure policy; an interrupted model call or a retried tool could otherwise produce duplicate or conflicting updates.

What can and cannot be concluded about performance?

The documented material establishes architectural capabilities, not a head-to-head benchmark. It does not support a conclusion that Jac is faster, LangChain is cheaper, one produces more accurate answers, or either delivers higher developer productivity. Those claims would require the same models, prompts, tools, workloads, retry policies and measurement methods on both stacks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can still measure a real project responsibly. Record end-to-end latency, model and tool error rates, token usage, recovery time after interruption, and the engineering effort required to add a new tool or policy. Report the model versions, deployment settings and workload so the result describes your application rather than implying a universal ranking.

What is the bottom-line choice?

Choose Jac when you want a language and compiler/runtime in which AI delegation, typed declarations, graph data and graph traversal are one programming model. Choose LangChain when you want a conventional open-source agent framework with a pre-built loop, provider and tool integrations, and middleware that can evolve into custom control. Choose LangGraph when a LangChain-based system needs durable execution, explicit state transitions, retries, interrupts or coordinated multi-agent behavior. The right answer follows the state and control model your product must preserve, not an unsupported benchmark claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jac a Python library or a separate programming language?

Jac is presented as a programming language and toolchain, while jaclang is its compiler/runtime exposed through the jac command. The wider ecosystem documents interoperability with Python, npm and C, but Jac’s syntax and compilation model are not simply a Python package layered onto an existing application.

Do I have to write LangGraph code to use LangChain agents?

No. The high-level create_agent path supplies a pre-built agent experience and runs on the LangGraph runtime. You normally reach for direct LangGraph development when you need to define custom state transitions, persistence behavior, interrupts, retries or multi-agent coordination yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can an agent pause before calling a sensitive tool?

In the LangChain stack, middleware can intercept the tool boundary and apply an approval or policy check before execution. For a workflow that must pause and later resume reliably, LangGraph provides the interrupt and persistence mechanisms to represent that waiting point explicitly.

What should I prototype first when the application has a large relationship graph?

Model one representative traversal and one write operation before building a broad conversational interface. If the prototype depends on persistent nodes, edges and walkers as its primary state, Jac lets you test that domain model directly; if the difficult part is approval-heavy workflow sequencing around an external graph service, evaluate LangChain with LangGraph control instead.
