VPN split tunneling is conditionally safe, not the safest default. It sends selected traffic through an encrypted VPN while other traffic uses the ordinary internet connection. That can reduce latency and VPN bandwidth, but anything outside the tunnel loses the VPN’s encryption, inspection, logging, and policy controls.
Use a forced full-device VPN on public Wi-Fi, unmanaged or personal devices, privileged accounts, and whenever sensitive data must stay under one security boundary. A split-tunnel exception is defensible only for a documented business need, with narrowly defined destinations, equivalent protection outside the tunnel, strong authentication, endpoint controls, and continuous monitoring.

Is VPN split tunneling safe?
It is safe only when the traffic that bypasses the VPN is deliberately limited and separately protected. Split tunneling is a routing decision, not an additional security control: selected routes use the VPN gateway, while the device’s default route continues through the local network and internet service provider.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns that split tunneling increases the chance of sensitive data reaching an unprotected network and can let an external attacker pivot through the device toward internal resources. NIST guidance is even more direct: “Due to its security complications and risks, split tunneling is strongly discouraged.”

For most individual users, the practical answer is to leave split tunneling disabled. For an enterprise, treat it as a narrowly scoped exception that must be justified, documented, tested, and reviewed whenever applications, destinations, or threats change.
How does split tunneling work?
A VPN client installs routes on the device. Internal corporate address ranges, for example, can be routed through the VPN interface, while the default route for everything else remains on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular. Some products select traffic by application; others use destination IP ranges, ports, or policy rules.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThis design is useful when a small amount of traffic needs corporate access but other traffic is high-volume or latency-sensitive. Video conferencing can avoid loading the corporate gateway, and voice applications can connect directly to reduce delay and jitter. The security boundary follows the route: a destination that is not matched by the VPN policy receives none of the VPN tunnel’s protections.
What a split route protects
- Traffic that matches the VPN route is encrypted between the endpoint and the VPN gateway.
- Internal services can remain reachable through private address ranges and corporate access controls.
- Security teams can inspect and log traffic that actually traverses the managed gateway.
What it leaves outside
- Direct traffic can be visible to the local network and the ISP.
- Corporate filtering, malware inspection, data-loss controls, and retention policies may not apply.
- Local-network attacks can target the same endpoint that holds a trusted VPN session.
What are the main risks of split tunneling?
Unprotected traffic and data leakage
Applications outside the VPN route use the local connection. On an untrusted network, observers may be able to see metadata or tamper with unencrypted traffic, and the organization may lose the ability to enforce filtering or investigate an incident. An overly broad or stale exception can also send a sensitive destination outside the tunnel unintentionally.
Dual-interface bridging
A laptop connected to Wi-Fi and Ethernet, or Wi-Fi and cellular, has multiple network paths at once. NIST identifies this dual-interface condition as a significant risk: the device can unintentionally bridge an untrusted network and a protected environment. Host-firewall rules, interface controls, and endpoint management are needed to prevent forwarding or unwanted inbound access.

Pivoting into internal resources
An attacker that reaches the device through its direct interface may try to use the active VPN connection as a path to internal systems. NCSC describes this as “pivoting.” The danger is greater when the VPN grants broad network access, the endpoint is poorly patched, or local firewall rules permit lateral connections.
Policy blind spots and evasion
Traffic outside the tunnel may bypass enterprise web controls, DNS security, logging, and duty-of-care requirements. Users can also be tempted to move work into an application that is not covered by the VPN policy simply because it performs better, creating an unapproved path for data.
DNS, IPv4, and IPv6 mistakes
A route list can look correct while DNS requests, IPv6 traffic, reconnects, or split-horizon names follow a different path. If only IPv4 routes are tested, an application that prefers IPv6 may bypass the intended tunnel. DNS leaks can reveal requested domains even when the application payload is encrypted.
Compromised VPN infrastructure
Split tunneling cannot repair a vulnerable gateway or client. CISA and NSA describe VPN servers as attractive targets for credential theft, remote-code execution, session hijacking, and cryptographic weakening. A split configuration still depends on prompt patching, strong authentication, secure management interfaces, and carefully restricted exposure.
Availability and recovery problems
Forced tunneling can interfere with hotel or airport captive portals and may make a device unusable during a VPN outage. Split tunneling can preserve ordinary internet access, but that convenience must not become an excuse for an unmonitored bypass. Define a tested recovery path rather than allowing users to disable controls ad hoc.

Should I use split tunneling on public Wi-Fi?
No, not for sensitive work. Public Wi-Fi is precisely where a full-device, automatically connected VPN provides its greatest value. A split configuration leaves some traffic exposed to the access point and removes that traffic from enterprise inspection. The NCSC generally recommends forcing traffic down the VPN, and Canadian Centre for Cyber Security guidance says organizations should avoid split tunneling as much as possible.
If a captive portal is required, connect to the portal before starting the VPN or use an organization-approved onboarding workflow. Do not create a permanent “public Wi-Fi” bypass that sends broad internet traffic directly.
What is the difference between split tunnel and full tunnel?
Full tunneling sends all device traffic through the VPN gateway; split tunneling sends only policy-selected traffic. The trade-off is between a larger security boundary and lower latency or gateway load.
| Consideration | Full-device forced tunnel | Split tunnel |
|---|---|---|
| Confidentiality coverage | All routed traffic receives VPN protection, subject to endpoint and gateway configuration. | Only matched routes are protected; direct traffic uses the local connection. |
| Enterprise inspection and logging | Central controls can cover the whole device’s traffic. | Bypassed traffic may be invisible to corporate inspection and logs. |
| Local-network exposure | Reduced for traffic inside the tunnel, although the endpoint remains on the local network. | Higher because direct applications interact with the local network and ISP. |
| Bandwidth and latency | Uses gateway capacity and can add delay. | Can keep high-volume or latency-sensitive services off the gateway. |
| Application compatibility | Captive portals, local devices, and region-dependent services may need special handling. | Direct internet access often works with fewer changes. |
| Outage behavior | With fail-closed controls, traffic stops when the VPN fails. | Non-VPN traffic can continue, which improves availability but can hide a security failure. |
| Operational complexity | Usually simpler to explain and audit. | Requires route, DNS, interface, endpoint, and exception management. |
| Proof of equivalent protection | One managed security path is easier to validate. | Each bypass destination must have its own documented protection and owner. |
When can split tunneling be justified?
A business exception can make sense when the benefit is concrete and the bypass can be constrained. NCSC identifies high-bandwidth services such as video conferencing and latency-sensitive services such as VoIP as common reasons. The provider outside the tunnel should demonstrate protection equivalent to the VPN, and the policy should use dedicated endpoints or IP ranges rather than a vague “all internet” rule.
Good candidates for an exception
- A defined set of service IP ranges whose ownership and security controls are documented.
- A managed application that requires direct connectivity for latency or capacity reasons.
- A Microsoft 365 deployment using dedicated Microsoft service IP ranges and least-privilege exceptions.
Poor candidates
- Personal browsing on a managed device.
- Privileged administration, source-code access, financial records, health information, or regulated data.
- Unmanaged or bring-your-own-device access to broad internal networks.
- Rules based on changing hostnames when the platform cannot reliably enforce the resulting addresses.
Microsoft’s enterprise pattern specifically favors dedicated Microsoft 365 service IP ranges and does not recommend relying on Microsoft 365 fully qualified domain names for this routing scenario. Keep the exception limited to the documented services and review the ranges when the provider changes them.

How do I configure split tunneling securely?
Exact menu names differ by VPN client and operating system, but the security sequence is consistent. Make the change through managed policy where possible, not by asking users to edit routes manually.
- Document the business requirement. Name the application, owner, users, destination ranges, expected performance benefit, data classification, and expiry or review date.
- Choose the narrowest destination rule. Prefer dedicated IP ranges or endpoints. Avoid a default “bypass VPN” switch and avoid broad address blocks that include unrelated services.
- Set least-privilege access at the gateway. Permit only the internal subnets, ports, and protocols the application needs. Do not grant a split-tunnel user unrestricted access merely because one service needs direct connectivity.
- Require automatic connection and fail-closed behavior where supported. If the VPN disconnects, protected traffic should stop rather than silently falling back to the local route. Define how a user reaches a captive portal without weakening the permanent policy.
- Secure identity and the endpoint. Use strong authentication, preferably phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, and authenticate both the device and user when the environment requires it. Keep the client, operating system, and security software patched.
- Control other interfaces. Disable unnecessary Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular paths during sensitive sessions, or use host-firewall rules to block forwarding and unauthorized inbound connections.
- Harden the gateway. Patch the VPN appliance and exposed web interfaces promptly, restrict management access, close unused ports and protocols, disable unnecessary features, and use standards-based, validated cryptography.
- Log the exception. Record tunnel state, route decisions, authentication events, DNS behavior, and connections to bypass destinations. Send logs to a monitoring system that can alert on unusual combinations of direct and VPN traffic.
How should I test a split-tunnel policy?
Test from every supported operating system and network type before rollout. A policy that works on a wired office connection may fail on home Wi-Fi, cellular, or a captive portal.
- Route verification: confirm that each approved internal range uses the VPN interface and that unrelated destinations use the intended direct path.
- IPv4 and IPv6: repeat the test for both address families; disable IPv6 only as a deliberate, documented control, not as an accidental workaround.
- DNS resolution: verify which resolver handles internal names and whether direct applications can leak corporate lookups.
- Reconnect behavior: suspend, resume, change networks, and restart the client. Ensure routes are rebuilt correctly each time.
- Fail-closed behavior: interrupt the VPN and confirm that protected destinations cannot be reached through the ordinary interface.
- Interface isolation: connect two interfaces and check that the endpoint cannot forward traffic between them or accept unexpected inbound sessions.
- Logging and alerting: confirm that tunnel connections, bypass use, authentication failures, and policy changes appear in central monitoring.
- Outage recovery: document how users obtain updates, reach a captive portal, or contact support without permanently disabling the VPN.
Re-test after client upgrades, gateway changes, application updates, destination-range changes, or a material change in the threat environment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does split tunneling expose my IP address?
It can. A website or service reached through the direct route normally sees the public IP address assigned by the local network or ISP, while a service reached through the VPN sees the VPN gateway’s egress address. The result depends on the route and on whether the application uses IPv4 or IPv6.
Split tunneling therefore should not be treated as an anonymity feature. It can also reveal network metadata to the local provider even when other applications are protected by the VPN.
Best Value
Can split tunneling protect a device from malware on the local network?
No. The VPN encrypts traffic to its gateway; it does not make the endpoint invisible to the Wi-Fi network or prevent attacks against exposed services. Keep host firewalls enabled, block unsolicited inbound connections, patch promptly, and avoid sharing files or administrative services on untrusted networks.
What should security teams monitor after enabling an exception?
Monitor the exception as a separate control, not as a one-time routing change. Useful signals include direct-interface connections during privileged sessions, access to destinations outside the approved ranges, repeated VPN reconnects, DNS requests leaving the expected resolver, new network interfaces, and authentication anomalies. Assign an owner who can remove the rule when the application or business need ends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can split tunneling expose my IP address?
Yes, for destinations that use the direct route. Those services generally see the public address supplied by the local network or ISP rather than the VPN gateway; applications using the VPN route see the gateway address instead.
Does split tunneling make a VPN faster?
It can reduce latency and gateway congestion for selected high-bandwidth or real-time applications. The improvement is workload- and network-dependent, and it comes in exchange for less centralized inspection and protection.
Will split tunneling work correctly with IPv6?
Only if the policy explicitly handles IPv6 as well as IPv4. An IPv6-preferred application can bypass an IPv4-only tunnel, so administrators must test routes, DNS, reconnects, and fail-closed behavior for both address families.
Is split tunneling suitable for a personal laptop used for work?
Treat an unmanaged or bring-your-own-device laptop as higher risk because the organization cannot fully control its interfaces, patches, and firewall. A full-device VPN or a managed work device is safer for sensitive or privileged work.
