The TEAMGROUP PD20 is a good fit if you want a very small portable SSD for fast, occasional transfers and your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port. On that 20Gbps connection, independent testing has come close to TEAMGROUP’s headline speeds. Its main drawback is sustained writing: after the cache fills, a large transfer can slow to about 300 MB/s. It is splash-resistant, not waterproof, and it does not have hardware encryption.

What is the TEAMGROUP PD20, and who is it for?

The PD20 is a pocket-sized external solid-state drive with a USB Type-C connection. TEAMGROUP offers 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions, and rates the drive for sequential speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write. Those are peak specifications, not a promise that every computer or every long transfer will run at those rates.

Its best use is moving or keeping data in moderate batches: a photo library, a game library, project files, or backups that do not involve repeatedly writing hundreds of gigabytes at once. Its small, light body is convenient to carry, while the IP54 rating offers some protection against dust and water spray. The trade-offs matter: peak speed depends on a specific host interface, lengthy writes can slow substantially, and encryption is software-only.

This is therefore more compelling as a compact travel or everyday shuttle drive than as a workstation drive for sustained high-volume writing. Whether it is a good buy also depends on the price and stock for the capacity you want; those can change, and no current price is established here.

How fast is the PD20 in real use?

On a compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connection, short sequential transfers can approach the advertised 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write ratings. Those results do not describe the speed of a very large, uninterrupted write, which is where independent testing found the drive’s most important limitation.

Evidence What was tested or reported What it means
TEAMGROUP specification sheet Up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 MB/s write Manufacturer-rated peak speeds; achieving them requires an appropriately fast host.
TechRadar, 2025 A 4TB sample reached 1,988 MB/s sequential read and 1,871 MB/s sequential write on USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. A compatible 20Gbps connection can get close to the rated short-transfer performance. This was a test of the 4TB model, not a result established for every capacity or computer.
PCWorld A 2TB model handled shorter 32GiB workloads closer to the promised performance, but a 450GB transfer eventually fell to about 300 MB/s for most of the operation. Short benchmarks and long writes produce different results; the sustained-write drop is significant for very large transfers.
PC Gamer Reported peak sequential performance lasting roughly 50GB before throttling. The cache-related slowdown can become relevant well before a transfer reaches hundreds of gigabytes.

The results should not be treated as one universal speed figure. TechRadar’s near-2GB/s numbers came from a 4TB sample, while PCWorld’s long-transfer result came from a 2TB model; different test sizes also expose different behavior. A brief benchmark may reflect the fast initial portion of a write, whereas a large transfer can continue after that fast portion is over.

What the write slowdown means for your files

If you usually copy a few folders, photos, or games at a time, the PD20’s strong short-transfer performance may be more relevant than its behavior after a very large write. If your routine involves writing hundreds of gigabytes in a single session, the reported fall to roughly 300 MB/s is a meaningful limitation. The published evidence supports treating it as a light- or intermittent-write drive, rather than assuming it will sustain its peak write rating throughout a large job.

That distinction is especially important for video editors, media teams, or anyone who repeatedly stages large working sets. For those workloads, compare sustained-write results—not just the sequential peak rating—before choosing a drive. The available tests establish a substantial drop under large-write conditions, but do not establish a single sustained speed for every capacity, host, or workload.

Does the PD20 need USB 3.2 Gen 2×2?

You can use the PD20 with a slower compatible USB connection, but USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 is needed to target its headline speed. Gen 2×2 is a 20Gbps interface; a regular USB 3.2 Gen 2 port is slower, so it will constrain transfer performance even if the drive itself is rated for up to 2,000 MB/s reads.

Check the exact port specification on the computer or other host you plan to use before buying. A USB-C-shaped connector alone does not tell you that the port supports Gen 2×2: Type-C describes the connector, while Gen 2×2 describes the interface capability. TechRadar’s buying guidance likewise flags the need for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2.

Compatibility checklist

  • Identify the speed standard of the host’s USB port, not just its connector shape.
  • For performance near the advertised peak, look specifically for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 or a clearly stated 20Gbps USB connection.
  • If the host is limited to a slower USB generation, expect the drive to work more slowly; do not use the PD20’s peak rating as a prediction for that setup.
  • The specification sheet lists a Type-C-to-Type-C cable. It does not establish that a Type-A cable is included.

Is the PD20 rugged, waterproof, or safe to submerge?

The PD20 has an IP54 rating, but it should not be described as waterproof or submersible. TEAMGROUP says external-laboratory testing was conducted and describes the drive as splash-resistant and partially dustproof when it is not in operation. IP54 is useful protection against dust ingress and water spray; it is not a guarantee against immersion.

Its small 22 g body makes it easier to carry than many larger rugged drives, and PC Gamer’s hands-on review notes a lanyard opening and rubberized exterior. Those details improve portability and handling, but they do not change the limits of the IP54 rating. Treat the rating as protection against incidental exposure, not permission to use the drive in wet conditions or drop it into water.

Does the PD20 have hardware encryption?

No. The PD20 offers software encryption, but it lacks hardware encryption, a limitation TechRadar identifies in its review. Software encryption may still be useful, but it is not the same as a drive with encryption handled by dedicated hardware.

If the drive will carry sensitive business data, check whether your organization requires hardware encryption before selecting it. The PD20’s compactness and transfer speed do not resolve that security requirement. The available specifications do not identify a particular encryption application or provide enough detail to assess its setup, compatibility, or administration features.

Is the TEAMGROUP PD20 worth buying?

It is worth considering if you already have a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 host and value a particularly light, compact drive for fast transfers in moderate batches. The independent 4TB test shows that the peak specification is attainable on a compatible connection, while the small size and IP54 rating make the drive practical to carry.

It is a less suitable choice if your priority is sustained writing at high speed, submersion protection, or hardware encryption. The 450GB transfer result makes it unwise to choose the PD20 solely on its peak write number for repeated, very large jobs. For any buyer, compare the current price of the capacity needed and verify that the host port supports the connection speed the purchase is meant to deliver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the PD20 come with a USB-A cable?

TEAMGROUP’s specification sheet lists a Type-C-to-Type-C cable, not a Type-A cable. If your host only has a Type-A port, the included-cable information does not establish that you can connect it without an additional cable or adapter.

What does the five-year limited warranty cover?

The published specification identifies a five-year limited warranty but does not spell out its covered failures, exclusions, or regional terms. Check the warranty conditions applicable to your location and seller before relying on the duration alone.

Are the PD20’s speeds guaranteed on every capacity?

No universal test result across all three capacities is established here: TechRadar’s near-rated sequential result was on a 4TB sample, and PCWorld’s large-transfer test used a 2TB model. Host interface and transfer size also affect results, so treat the rated maximum as a peak specification rather than a guaranteed everyday speed.
