The Smeg FAB32RRD5AU is a 331 L freestanding, bottom-mount refrigerator that pairs a red 1950s-inspired exterior with modern features including Total No Frost, an inverter compressor and a dedicated 0°C drawer. Its main trade-offs are price, a relatively compact 234 L fridge and 97 L freezer split, and energy figures that differ between Smeg’s current product listing and CHOICE’s 2023 record. It is worth considering if the look is a priority and its dimensions and storage suit your kitchen; check the delivered unit’s current Australian energy label before estimating running costs.
What is the Smeg FAB32RRD5AU?
The FAB32RRD5AU is the red version of Smeg’s 50’s Style freestanding refrigerator. It has a refrigerator compartment above a separate freezer below, with a right-hand hinge. The model is aimed at buyers who want a conspicuous, design-led appliance but still need everyday functions such as frost-free operation, adjustable storage and electronic temperature control.

Its appearance is the most immediately distinctive feature, but this is not simply a retro cabinet with basic cooling. Smeg lists MultiFlow air circulation, an inverter compressor, LED lighting, fast-cooling and fast-freezing functions, and acoustic and visual alarms. The question is whether those conveniences and the design justify its price and fit in your kitchen—not whether it offers the capacity of a large family refrigerator.
Smeg describes the appliance as an “iconic colourful 50’s inspired design refrigerator” with a “spacious separate freezer compartment,” intended to add character without sacrificing cooling performance or practical interior features. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, rather than an independent assessment of performance. For a buyer, the useful distinction is that the FAB32RRD5AU combines a recognisable exterior with a conventional bottom-mount layout and a stated set of modern refrigeration features.

The exact model code matters when shopping. FAB32RRD5AU identifies this red Australian-market model; check that code on the listing, invoice and delivered appliance rather than assuming a similarly styled Smeg refrigerator has the same capacity, dimensions or features. Retail listings may describe it as a Smeg FAB32 red fridge or a 331 L Smeg bottom-mount refrigerator, but the code is the clearest way to distinguish this unit from related finishes and models.
How much food does it hold, and how is the interior arranged?
Total capacity is 331 L: 234 L for fresh food and 97 L for frozen food. The freezer is therefore a little over a quarter of the stated total volume, making the split worth checking against your shopping habits if you keep a large amount of frozen food. The total gives a useful starting point, but it does not tell you how much space is convenient for your particular containers, weekly shop or meal-prep routine.
Recommended Free Tools
Think through the division rather than looking only at the headline litre figure. If you rely on fresh produce, drinks and refrigerated ingredients, the 234 L compartment is the more relevant number. If you routinely store batch-cooked meals, bulk-frozen food or large packages, the 97 L freezer may be the limiting part of the layout. Conversely, someone who buys frozen food occasionally may find the bottom freezer adequate. The published capacity does not specify how many shopping bags or meals will fit, so compare the internal layout with the kinds of items you actually store.
Refrigerator compartment
Smeg lists two adjustable glass shelves, a crisper drawer, one covered door shelf, two adjustable door shelves and a bottle shelf. A separate LifePlus drawer is designed for storage at 0°C, with meat, fish and cheese given as intended uses. That gives the interior a dedicated colder zone as well as general shelving, but the published specifications do not state the usable dimensions of individual shelves or drawers.
The adjustable shelves give some flexibility for changing the vertical arrangement, while the door shelves and bottle shelf provide separate places for smaller items and bottles. The specifications do not state the maximum bottle size, shelf load limits or exact shelf positions, so do not assume every tall container will fit in the configuration you prefer. If you often store tall bottles, large pots or wide platters, inspect the interior in person or ask the retailer for an internal layout image before ordering.
The LifePlus 0°C drawer is a feature for buyers who value a distinct storage zone for foods such as meat, fish and cheese. It is not the same as having extra overall capacity: it is part of the refrigerator’s stated 234 L volume. Smeg identifies its intended use and temperature, but the published material does not provide independent food-preservation results or the drawer’s dimensions. Treat it as a useful layout feature, not a guarantee of longer freshness.

Freezer compartment
The 97 L freezer has three drawers and glass shelves, along with a fast-freezing function and compartment. Smeg lists a freezing capacity of 6 kg per 24 hours. That is the manufacturer’s stated capacity; it is not an independent performance result.
Three drawers can help separate frozen items by type or use, but the specification does not give each drawer’s dimensions. Check the layout if you regularly buy unusually large frozen packages or want to freeze bulky items. The fast-freezing function is intended for newly added food, while the listed 6 kg/24 h figure provides a manufacturer-stated reference point for the unit’s freezing capacity. It should not be read as a claim about how quickly any particular item will freeze in day-to-day conditions.
What cooling features does it offer?
Total No Frost is intended to prevent frost build-up, so routine manual defrosting should not be part of normal use. MultiFlow and fan-assisted distribution circulate cold air through the compartments, while electronic controls regulate temperature. Smeg also specifies an inverter compressor.

These are feature descriptions, not independent test results. No Frost addresses frost accumulation; MultiFlow and fan assistance describe air circulation; electronic controls let the appliance regulate temperature; and the inverter compressor is part of the cooling system. They make the specification more complete than a basic refrigerator, but they do not by themselves prove a particular level of temperature stability, food preservation or energy use.

Fast cooling and fast freezing are useful when adding a larger load of fresh groceries or food for freezing; holiday and ECO functions provide additional operating modes. The model has a digital LED display and LED interior lighting. Smeg lists both acoustic and visual door-open and temperature alarms, which can alert you to an open door or a temperature issue.
The functions address different situations. Fast cooling and fast freezing are the modes to consider when loading groceries or adding food for freezing. Holiday and ECO are alternative operating functions, though the product information does not explain their precise settings or quantify potential savings. Check the manual for how to activate each mode and any advice on what to do with food in the compartments before using a holiday setting.
The display and alarm combination is practical in a busy kitchen: a sound and visual warning can make an open door or temperature alert easier to notice. The specifications do not state how long an alarm waits before sounding, how it can be silenced, or what thresholds trigger a temperature warning. Those details are worth checking in the user manual if alarm behaviour is important to you.
Manufacturer-listed noise is 37 dB(A), and the stated temperature-rise time is 40 hours. These are specification figures, not independent measurements or a promise that food will remain safe for that full period under every circumstance. Smeg also lists a 6 kg per 24-hour freezing capacity. The product information provided does not include independent noise, temperature-stability or cooling-performance scores. In particular, the temperature-rise figure should not be treated as an assurance that food will remain at a safe temperature for 40 hours in a power outage: actual conditions and the way the appliance is used matter.

Measure the installation space, route from the entry to the kitchen, and room needed to open the doors. The cabinet width alone is not enough: this model is 601 mm wide, but it is 768 mm deep including the handle and 1197 mm deep with the doors open to 90 degrees.
| Measurement | Specification | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 1968 mm | Allow for the refrigerator’s full height and any installation clearance required by the manual. |
| Width | 601 mm | Check the clear opening and access route, not just the nominal cabinet size. |
| Depth without handle | 728 mm | Use this only if comparing the cabinet body; the handle projects farther. |
| Depth with handle | 768 mm | Check how far the unit will project into the room. |
| Depth with doors open to 90° | 1197 mm | Make sure the door swing will not hit a wall, island or nearby cabinetry. |
| Net weight | 96.5 kg | Plan delivery and positioning with the appliance’s weight in mind. |
Smeg identifies the hinge as right-hand. Allow for ventilation at the rear and sides in accordance with the installation instructions. A tight alcove can affect both installation and door access, so verify the required clearances with Smeg’s current manual or the retailer before ordering; the listed external dimensions do not specify those clearances.
Use the measurements in sequence. First compare the 1968 mm height and 601 mm width with the actual opening, accounting for any trim, skirting or cabinetry that narrows the usable space. Then check projection: 728 mm is the body depth without the handle, while the handle brings the listed depth to 768 mm. That difference matters if the refrigerator sits beside a walkway or an island.
Next, plan for the door swing. The 1197 mm figure is the depth with the doors open to 90 degrees, not the space needed to move the appliance through a doorway. Check that the right-hinged doors can open without striking a wall, island or adjacent cabinet, and that you can reach the drawers and shelves in the position available. A refrigerator can physically fit into an alcove yet still be awkward to use if the doors cannot open far enough.

Finally, assess delivery access and positioning. The unit’s listed net weight is 96.5 kg, so confirm that the delivery route, stairs or lift, thresholds and final position can be managed by the retailer’s delivery team. The product specifications give a 180 cm cable; consider whether the outlet can be reached without stretching or relying on an unsuitable extension arrangement. Confirm outlet and installation requirements with the seller or Smeg rather than improvising an electrical connection.
How efficient is it, and what will it cost to run?
The published energy information is inconsistent. Smeg’s current Australian product page lists efficiency class D and 204 kWh/a. CHOICE’s 2023 test record lists four stars and claimed consumption of 298 kWh per year; retailer listings also repeat the four-star/298 kWh figures. These figures should not be combined or treated as interchangeable: the public information does not reconcile the labels or measurement bases.
For a realistic running-cost estimate, use the energy figure on the current Australian label supplied with the unit you are buying. Multiply its annual consumption in kWh by your electricity tariff per kWh to estimate annual energy cost. The result is an estimate based on that label and tariff; it does not account for every factor that affects actual household consumption.
The difference between 204 and 298 kWh per year is material enough to check before purchase, especially if comparing this refrigerator with another model. Ask the retailer to confirm which energy label applies to the exact unit and inspect the label on delivery rather than relying on a copied specification in an older listing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When comparing appliances, use figures on the same basis. A class rating and a consumption figure are related pieces of label information, but the two listings here disagree on both the star/class presentation and annual use. Do not average the numbers, select the lower one because it looks more attractive, or assume that one retailer’s copied specification is definitive. Ask for the current Australian energy label for the exact FAB32RRD5AU being sold.
For example, if the applicable label states annual use of X kWh and your electricity rate is Y dollars per kWh, the simple estimate is X multiplied by Y dollars per year. Substitute the actual label number and your tariff; there is no need to guess a usage rate. This makes a comparison with another refrigerator more useful, provided you use the equivalent annual-use figures and comparable electricity prices for both.
Smeg also lists a 127 W connection rating, 0.8 A current and 50/60 Hz frequency, with an Australian plug and a 180 cm cable. These are electrical specifications, not a measure of annual consumption: do not multiply the connection rating by every hour in a year and treat that as the refrigerator’s expected energy use. Use the annual kWh figure on the applicable energy label for a running-cost estimate. If you have a specific outlet, circuit or installation concern, ask a qualified installer or the retailer to confirm suitability.
What do independent tests say about it?
CHOICE categorises the FAB32RRD5AU in its freezer-on-bottom refrigerator group for 300–380 L models and records a 2023 test year. Its public record identifies the energy and warranty information, but its performance scores are available to members only. That means the public information does not establish how this model scored for temperature stability, evenness, heat load, running cost, reliability or owner satisfaction.
It would be misleading to infer those results from the presence of No Frost, MultiFlow or an inverter compressor. Those are listed features, not substitutes for measured performance. Buyers who need a verified comparison should consult the complete CHOICE results if they have access, and compare the model against refrigerators tested in the same category and period.

The distinction matters because a feature list answers what the manufacturer says is fitted, while a test score evaluates measured outcomes under a particular test regime. A retailer’s description can establish that a model has a 0°C drawer or an inverter compressor; it cannot establish how evenly temperatures were maintained in testing or how it compares on reliability. For a purchase where cooling results are a priority, seek the actual member-only CHOICE results rather than inferring them from the specification.
CHOICE also lists a two-year warranty and Italy as the country of origin. Those are useful points to verify against the exact appliance and paperwork, but they do not replace checking the seller’s terms or the manufacturer’s warranty document. The public record does not provide a performance score that can be quoted here.
How much does it cost, and is it worth the premium?
Prices and stock move. At the time represented by the available listings, Smeg showed a $4,490 list price and an out-of-stock status, while CHOICE listed $4,290. Retailer prices and availability varied. Treat these as source-specific listing snapshots, not a guaranteed current price or a quote for delivery.
The value calculation is personal: you are paying for the distinctive red finish and styling as well as the refrigerator’s features. Compare the total checkout price, including delivery and any installation or removal charges, with alternatives that meet your actual capacity, fit and energy needs. A similar-looking exterior does not establish equivalent storage, and a lower sticker price does not establish lower running costs.
There is no single like-for-like substitute established by the listed prices alone. Compare any alternative across the dimensions that affect use and cost: width, depth and door clearance; fresh-food and freezer volume; the current verified energy label and its basis; No Frost, airflow, compressor and special-zone features; noise and alarm functions; warranty and after-sales support; and the total price. A cheaper refrigerator may have a different capacity split or omit a feature you value, while a design-led competitor may have different dimensions or running costs.
Also compare the delivered price, not just the advertised appliance price. Delivery access, installation, removal of an old refrigerator and stock availability can change the final amount and purchase experience. Ask the retailer for the charges that apply to your address and access conditions. The public price listings do not establish a current universal price, delivery fee, affiliate offer or stock position.
- It may suit you if the design is a major reason for buying, 331 L is adequate, and the 234 L/97 L compartment split matches how you store food.
- Look more closely at alternatives if you need a larger freezer, have limited door-swing clearance, or want energy figures that can be compared on a clearly consistent basis.
- Before committing confirm the exact model and finish, current price and stock, delivered energy label, dimensions and installation clearances, warranty terms, and delivery arrangements.
On balance, the FAB32RRD5AU is easiest to justify for someone who puts real value on the red 50’s Style appearance and has room for its dimensions. The Total No Frost system, MultiFlow, inverter compressor, adjustable interior, 0°C drawer and alarms give it a substantial feature set on paper. But neither those features nor the design settle whether it is good value for your household: capacity, verified energy use and the total purchase cost still need to work for you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should you verify before buying?
Use this checklist with the retailer and, where necessary, Smeg. It focuses on details that can change by listing, installation or purchase rather than assuming every online specification is current.
- Confirm the model code and finish. Check that the order is for the FAB32RRD5AU in red, not a related Smeg model or a different finish.
- Measure the complete space. Check height, width and depth, including the handle, then account for the stated 1197 mm depth with doors open to 90 degrees.
- Check the installation instructions. Confirm rear and side ventilation requirements and whether the right-hand door configuration works for your kitchen.
- Verify the energy label on the exact unit. Ask which published figure applies and use the delivered Australian label for your running-cost estimate.
- Get a complete delivered price. Confirm stock, delivery access, delivery cost, installation and removal arrangements, and the applicable warranty with the seller.
- Compare the storage split. Decide whether 234 L of refrigerator space and 97 L of freezer space suit the way your household shops and cooks.
- Check the electrical setup. Note the listed Australian plug and 180 cm cable, and confirm that a suitable outlet is available at the intended position.
- Review the warranty paperwork. CHOICE lists two years, but confirm the terms and coverage that apply to your appliance and seller.
What are the main strengths and trade-offs?
| What stands out | Why it matters | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Distinctive red 50’s Style appearance | It makes the refrigerator a visible part of the kitchen design. | The styling commands a premium relative to the listed price; compare the full purchase cost with your priorities. |
| Total No Frost and MultiFlow | They provide frost-free operation and circulated air as listed by Smeg. | These features do not prove a particular independent performance score. |
| LifePlus 0°C drawer | A dedicated colder zone is intended for foods such as meat, fish and cheese. | Published details do not give drawer dimensions or independent preservation results. |
| Compact overall capacity | 331 L may work where a larger appliance will not. | The freezer is 97 L; households with substantial frozen storage needs should assess the split carefully. |
| Conflicting energy listings | There is an energy figure on both manufacturer and independent listing pages. | Smeg lists 204 kWh/a and class D; CHOICE’s 2023 record lists 298 kWh/year and four stars. Confirm the unit’s label. |
| Right-hand hinge and large open-door depth | The listed open depth helps assess access around the refrigerator. | Check the door’s path and nearby obstructions; a 601 mm width does not tell you whether the doors can open freely. |
| Useful control and alarm set | Holiday, ECO, fast cooling, fast freezing, a display and acoustic/visual alarms are specified. | The specifications do not quantify savings or explain alarm timing; consult the manual for operating details. |
| Delivery-relevant size and weight | The 1968 mm height and 96.5 kg net weight help frame access and positioning checks. | Confirm the route, final position, ventilation and the applicable delivery arrangements before ordering. |

What warranty does CHOICE list for this refrigerator?
CHOICE’s 2023 record lists a two-year warranty. Check the warranty document for the exact unit and seller because the listing alone does not spell out coverage conditions.
Where is the Smeg FAB32RRD5AU made?
CHOICE lists Italy as the country of origin for the model. Check the product label or documentation for the specific unit if origin is important to your purchase.
How much electricity does the Smeg FAB32RRD5AU use?
Smeg’s current Australian product page lists 204 kWh/a and class D, while CHOICE’s 2023 record lists 298 kWh/year and four stars. The public listings do not reconcile the figures, so check the current Australian energy label on the exact unit you buy.
How do I estimate its annual running cost?
Multiply the annual kWh figure on the applicable energy label by your electricity tariff per kWh. Use the label supplied with the unit rather than assuming either of the conflicting online figures applies.
Does the FAB32RRD5AU need manual defrosting?
Smeg lists Total No Frost, which is intended to prevent frost build-up and avoid routine manual defrosting. Follow the appliance manual for care and operation.
How much space does it need with the doors open?
Smeg lists a depth of 1197 mm with the doors open to 90 degrees. Also check the right-hand door swing, ventilation clearances and the room needed to access shelves and drawers.
What is the freezer capacity and freezing rate?
The freezer is listed at 97 L, with three drawers and glass shelves. Smeg states a freezing capacity of 6 kg per 24 hours; this is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result.
Is the Smeg FAB32RRD5AU currently in stock, and what does it cost?
Stock and prices vary by retailer. Smeg showed a $4,490 list price and out-of-stock status in the listing reviewed, while CHOICE listed $4,290. Confirm the live price, stock, delivery charges and warranty with the retailer.
The Bottom Line
The Smeg FAB32RRD5AU is a feature-equipped 331 L refrigerator whose strongest case is its red 50’s Style design paired with Total No Frost, MultiFlow, an inverter compressor and a dedicated 0°C drawer. It is a more compelling choice when that look matters and the 234 L fridge/97 L freezer split fits your household. Before paying a premium, measure for the 1968 mm height, 601 mm width and 1197 mm open-door depth, compare full delivered prices, and verify the energy label on the exact unit: Smeg lists 204 kWh/a and class D, while CHOICE’s 2023 record lists 298 kWh/year and four stars.
