Yes, if you need a mid-to-large stainless-steel saucepan for induction and other common cooktops. The Scanpan Impact covered saucepan combines a 20cm diameter, nominal 3.5-litre capacity, 18/10 stainless steel and a 6.4mm aluminium-core bonded base. It includes a tempered-glass lid, internal volume marks and a drip-free rim, making it practical for soups, sauces, grains, custards and modest pasta batches.
Its main qualification is temperature guidance. Retailers disagree about the maximum oven setting: one listing specifies 220°C with the lid and 250°C without it, while another says 260°C. Treat 220°C with the lid and 250°C without the lid as the conservative limits unless the instructions supplied in your country say otherwise. The pan is dishwasher-safe, but handwashing and avoiding thermal shock are better for maintaining the finish.

The reviewed model is a covered stainless-steel saucepan in Scanpan’s Impact range. Its 20cm diameter and 3.5L stated capacity place it above a typical everyday 1–2L saucepan, but below stockpot territory. That makes it a useful single-pan size for households that regularly cook more than one or two portions without wanting a large, cumbersome pot.
| Specification | What the listings establish |
|---|---|
| Product | Scanpan Impact covered saucepan |
| Diameter | 20cm |
| Stated capacity | 3.5L |
| Body material | 18/10 stainless steel |
| Base construction | 6.4mm impact-bonded sandwich base with an aluminium core |
| Lid | Tempered glass |
| Handles | Stainless steel, cast or riveted according to the retailer description |
| Interior features | Capacity markings and a drip-free rim |
| Cooktops | Induction, gas, ceramic, halogen, radiant-ring and solid-plate |
| Dishwasher use | Listed as dishwasher-safe; handwashing is recommended to preserve the finish |
The manufacturer describes the finish as a two-tone matt-and-polished exterior. Its product description says the glass lid fits the saucepan and steamer, allowing you to watch food while it cooks. That wording confirms lid compatibility within the range, but it does not establish that a steamer insert is included with every saucepan package.

How does the bonded base affect cooking?
The pan uses stainless steel for the cooking vessel and an aluminium core inside its bonded base. Aluminium transfers heat more readily than stainless steel, while the stainless exterior supplies the hard-wearing, non-reactive surface expected from steel cookware. The manufacturer and retailers specify a 6.4mm sandwich base, which is the principal heat-spreading feature of this model.
In practical use, a thick bonded base should help distribute heat across the bottom better than a thin single-layer steel base. It is particularly relevant when reducing a sauce, warming milk or cooking grains, where a concentrated hot spot can cause sticking or scorching. The available product information does not include an independent heat map, measured temperature variance or laboratory boil-speed result, so the base should be understood as a construction benefit rather than a verified performance score.
The aluminium is confined to the bonded base rather than advertised as a fully clad wall construction. That distinction matters if you compare it with a saucepan whose sides also contain aluminium layers: the Impact’s strongest heat-transfer advantage is at the base. Stirring remains important for thick mixtures, especially on high heat.
Is the Scanpan Impact compatible with induction?
Yes. Retailer and manufacturer listings identify the saucepan as suitable for induction as well as gas, ceramic, halogen, radiant-ring and solid-plate cooktops. The magnetic stainless-steel base is what allows it to work on induction.
On induction, choose a cooking zone that is close to the pan’s base diameter rather than using an oversized zone at maximum power. A 20cm vessel can heat quickly on a suitable zone, and the thick base retains heat after the control is reduced. Start at a moderate setting when warming milk, custard or a thick sauce; high induction power can overshoot before the contents have time to respond.
On gas, keep the flame under the base instead of allowing it to climb the sides. Ceramic and radiant-ring hobs benefit from the same approach because unnecessary side heat can discolor the exterior. Do not drag the saucepan across a glass cooktop; lift it to protect both the hob and the pan’s polished areas.

Can it go in the oven?
Use 220°C as the conservative maximum with the glass lid and 250°C without the lid. Kitchen Warehouse lists those two limits, while Bunnings lists the item as oven-safe to 260°C. Because the retailer specifications conflict, the lower, more specific limits are the safer editorial guidance. Check the care leaflet supplied with your particular market version before using a higher setting.
| Configuration | Conservative limit | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pan with tempered-glass lid | 220°C | The lid and its fittings are the limiting components in the lower rating. |
| Pan without lid | 250°C | Removing the glass eliminates the lower lid limit, but the pan and handle rating still apply. |
| Retailer listing that says 260°C | Do not treat as the default | The higher figure conflicts with another listing; verify the instructions supplied in your country. |
Stainless handles can become hot in an oven even if they stay cooler for longer during stovetop cooking. Use oven gloves when moving the pan, and place the hot lid on a heat-safe surface. Avoid sudden temperature changes: putting a very hot pan on a cold, wet surface or rinsing it immediately with cold water can create thermal shock.
What can you cook in a 3.5L saucepan?
The capacity suits recipes that are awkward in a small saucepan but excessive in a stockpot. It is a sensible size for a family batch of soup, a substantial sauce, rice and other grains, custard, steamed or boiled vegetables, and a small batch of pasta. The internal markings let you add measured quantities directly to the pan, reducing the need for a separate jug.
Sauces and reductions
The broad 20cm base gives a reasonable evaporation area for tomato sauce, gravy and reductions. The bonded base is useful when heat needs to be spread under a thick mixture. Lower the heat before a dairy-based sauce catches, and stir across the entire bottom rather than only around the centre.

Soups, grains and vegetables
Three and a half litres is enough for several servings of soup or a meal-prep batch of grains, with room to stir. The tempered-glass lid allows you to monitor a simmer without repeatedly lifting it and releasing heat. Leave practical headroom for bubbling foods; the stated capacity is a nominal maximum, not a guarantee that every recipe can be filled to the rim safely.
Pasta and boiling water
The pan can handle small pasta batches, but its 20cm footprint is not a substitute for a large pasta pot when cooking for a crowd. A full pan of water will also be noticeably heavier than a 1–2L saucepan, so use two hands or support the handle and opposite side when carrying it.

How usable are the lid, rim and handles?
The tempered-glass lid is the most immediately useful convenience feature. You can check the boil, foam level and reduction without lifting the lid, which avoids unnecessary heat loss and splashing. Glass can still become hot and may cloud with condensation, so visibility is helpful rather than absolute.
The drip-free rim is designed to control pouring and reduce liquid running down the outside of the pan. That is valuable when decanting soup or sauce, although a controlled pour still requires a firm grip because a full 3.5L saucepan is heavy. Internal capacity marks are convenient for stock, water and milk, but read them at eye level and allow for the markings’ intended units and spacing.
Stainless-steel handles are durable and are designed to remain cooler for longer than the body during stovetop use. “Cooler” does not mean cool: prolonged cooking, a large burner or an oven will heat them. Keep a dry oven glove nearby, and do not rely on a damp cloth, which can transfer heat rapidly.
How should you clean and maintain it?
The saucepan is listed as dishwasher-safe, but the care guidance recommends handwashing to preserve the matt-and-polished appearance. Handwashing also makes it easier to deal with residue before a dishwasher cycle bakes it onto the surface.
- Let the pan cool naturally before washing. Do not rinse a hot pan under cold water.
- Use warm water, dish soap and a soft sponge for ordinary food residue. Avoid abrasive pads that can dull the polished sections.
- For stuck-on food, soak the pan and loosen residue rather than scraping aggressively with a sharp tool.
- Dry it promptly to reduce water spotting, especially on the polished exterior.
- If heat tint appears, apply a bicarbonate-of-soda paste, rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Use a Scanpan steel cleaner if you want to restore more of the original polish; follow that cleaner’s label directions.
Heat tint is a cosmetic discoloration, not evidence by itself that the bonded base has failed. Persistent pitting, a loose handle or a lid that no longer seats correctly is different: stop using the pan and ask the retailer or manufacturer about warranty assessment.
What are the practical advantages and compromises?
| Advantages | Compromises |
|---|---|
| Works on induction and the major gas, ceramic, halogen and electric cooktop types. | The 3.5L capacity makes it heavier to lift when full than a 1–2L saucepan. |
| 6.4mm aluminium-core bonded base is designed to spread heat. | No publicly accessible independent heat-map or laboratory boil-speed result establishes how it performs against competitors. |
| Glass lid permits visual monitoring during a simmer. | The lid lowers the conservative oven limit to 220°C. |
| Internal marks and a drip-free rim improve measuring and pouring. | Handwashing is preferable if preserving the two-tone finish matters to you. |
| 18/10 stainless body is durable and non-reactive for ordinary cooking. | Stainless handles can still become hot and require gloves in an oven. |
| Retailers in Australia list a 10-year manufacturing-defect warranty. | Warranty length and conditions may differ in other countries. |
How does its size compare with a smaller saucepan?
The choice is less about a superior material and more about workload. A 1–2L saucepan is easier to lift, stores more easily and suits one or two portions. The Impact’s 3.5L capacity reduces overflow risk for family-sized recipes and gives you more room to stir, but it takes more shelf space and demands more care when full.

| Use case | 1–2L saucepan | Impact 20cm 3.5L |
|---|---|---|
| Single serving of sauce or porridge | Usually more convenient | Works, but may feel oversized |
| Family soup or meal-prep batch | Likely requires multiple batches | Better suited to one batch |
| Small pasta quantity | Convenient for very small portions | Suitable for a modest batch |
| Storage and lifting | Lighter and easier | More demanding when full |
| Induction compatibility | Depends on the individual pan | Listed as compatible |
If your cooking is mostly sauces for one or two people, the extra capacity may not justify the footprint. If you often cook soup, grains, custard or vegetables for several people, the larger working area is more useful than a nominally lighter small pan.
What warranty and manufacturing information is available?
Australian retailer listings state a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Minimax identifies the saucepan as designed in Denmark and made in China. Neither statement should be generalized to every market: warranty duration, exclusions, claim procedure and the entity responsible for support can vary by country.
Keep the receipt or other proof of purchase, record the retailer and purchase date, and read the local warranty terms before relying on the 10-year figure. A warranty against manufacturing defects normally does not mean coverage for cosmetic wear, misuse, thermal shock or damage from unsuitable cleaning, so the written conditions matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does independent testing tell us?
Consumer NZ included this model in a 13-saucepan test updated in June 2025 and displayed a NZ$220 price. The page identifies performance, evenness of cooking, water-boiling speed and ease of use as test categories, but detailed scores are subscriber-gated on the accessible version.
That means you can treat the listing as evidence that the model was included in the test, not as proof of a numerical rank or a winning score. No publicly visible result establishes that this saucepan boils faster, cooks more evenly or cleans more easily than a particular alternative.
What should you check before buying?
- Confirm the exact package. Check that the listing says “Scanpan Impact 20cm 3.5L saucepan with lid” and verify whether any steamer insert is included or sold separately.
- Check your cooktop. The model is listed for induction, gas, ceramic, halogen, radiant-ring and solid-plate cooking, but confirm the retailer’s specification for your market.
- Read the local oven guidance. Use 220°C with the lid and 250°C without it unless the supplied instructions clearly state otherwise.
- Measure your storage space. Allow room for the 20cm body, the lid and the handle projection; the quoted diameter does not describe the complete footprint.
- Decide whether you will handwash. Dishwasher safety is listed, but handwashing is the better choice if preserving the two-tone finish is important.
- Verify warranty terms and price. Australian listings mention a 10-year manufacturing-defect warranty, while other countries may use different terms. Save proof of purchase.
Is the Scanpan Impact 20cm 3.5L saucepan worth it?
It is a strong fit for a cook who wants one medium-large saucepan that works on induction and conventional cooktops, offers a visible lid and internal measurements, and has a substantial bonded base. The 3.5L capacity is genuinely useful for soups, sauces, grains, custards, vegetables and small pasta batches, while the 20cm footprint remains more manageable than a stockpot.

Buy it with realistic expectations: the available evidence confirms the construction and compatibility, not a guaranteed best-in-class boil time or heat-evenness score. Follow the conservative oven limits because retailer listings conflict, handwash when finish preservation matters, and verify warranty terms in your country. For those conditions, the Impact is a practical, durable stainless-steel workhorse rather than a specialist high-temperature or lightweight pan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the saucepan include a steamer insert?
The product description says the glass lid fits the saucepan and steamer, which indicates compatibility within the range. It does not establish that an insert is included in every box, so check the package contents with the retailer before ordering.

What does 18/10 stainless steel mean?
The designation refers to the approximate chromium and nickel proportions in the steel. Chromium supports corrosion resistance, while nickel helps maintain a stable, less reactive surface and the familiar stainless finish.
Is the listed 3.5L capacity the amount I should fill to the rim?
No. It is the pan’s stated nominal capacity. Leave headroom for bubbling and stirring, especially with soup, milk and starchy foods, to reduce boil-overs.
Can the 10-year warranty be used worldwide?
Do not assume that. The 10-year manufacturing-defect term is stated by Australian retailers, while warranty coverage and claim rules can differ elsewhere. Confirm the local policy and retain proof of purchase.
