Short answer: the GMKtec EVO-X3 is worth considering at about $3,800 only if you specifically need its unusual combination of 128GB shared memory, a 16-core Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, Radeon 8060S integrated graphics and an OCuLink connection for a desktop GPU. It is a compact workstation for local AI, demanding photo/video projects and specialized development workloads—not a sensible value choice for web, office or ordinary gaming use. The soldered memory is the biggest long-term limitation, while the single rear USB-C port means many desk setups will also need a dock or hub.
This review explains what the EVO-X3 can do, where the configuration is difficult to justify, and how to plan storage, peripherals and optional graphics expansion before buying.

What is the GMKtec EVO-X3 designed to do?
The EVO-X3 is a tall, metal mini PC built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 platform. Its design goal is to put workstation-class CPU throughput, a large shared memory pool and capable integrated graphics into a much smaller enclosure than a conventional desktop tower. The machine is most distinctive when a workload needs more than a typical mini PC’s 16GB or 32GB of memory, but does not always justify a full-size workstation.
Its processor combines 16 Zen 5 CPU cores and 32 threads, with boost speeds up to 5.1GHz. Graphics come from a Radeon 8060S integrated GPU with 40 compute units, while an AMD XDNA 2 neural-processing unit is rated at 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). The CPU and GPU draw from the same 128GB LPDDR5X-8000 memory pool, so applications can work with large datasets without the fixed 8GB or 12GB graphics-memory ceiling common in small systems.

That architecture makes the EVO-X3 a specialist purchase. Local language-model experiments, large Lightroom or Photoshop catalogs, 4K editing timelines and software builds can benefit from the capacity. Email, browser tabs, spreadsheets and light gaming cannot use enough of the hardware to justify the price.

How fast is the EVO-X3 in CPU workloads?
Independent testing shows performance closer to a compact workstation than to a typical office mini PC. In TechRadar’s test configuration and selected power settings, the EVO-X3 scored 2,956 in Geekbench 6 single-core and 19,401 in Geekbench 6 multi-core. The same review recorded 33,295 in Cinebench R23 multi-core and 2,034 in Cinebench R23 single-core.
Those figures are laboratory results for that review unit, not guaranteed scores for every configuration. Firmware, Windows updates, memory allocation, cooling mode and background software can all move benchmark results. They are useful as an indication of class: the 16-core chip has enough parallel capacity for compilation, rendering, encoding, virtual machines and other workloads that punish ordinary four- or eight-core mini PCs.
PCWorld described the system as exceptionally fast for a compact pre-built computer and reported stable cooling without significant throttling. That matters more than a short benchmark burst if you intend to encode video, render scenes or compile for hours. The EVO-X3 is designed to maintain high output rather than merely produce a high opening score.
Is the EVO-X3 good for local AI?
Yes, provided your priority is memory capacity rather than the highest possible discrete-GPU throughput. The 128GB shared pool is the central reason to buy the EVO-X3: it gives local language models, embeddings, image-generation workflows and large datasets far more working room than mainstream mini PCs. CPU, integrated GPU and NPU resources can be assigned according to what the application supports.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What the 50-TOPS NPU does—and does not—guarantee
The XDNA 2 NPU’s 50-TOPS rating describes peak AI arithmetic capability, not a universal application speed. An application must be written to use the NPU, and many local-AI tools still rely primarily on the CPU or GPU. Check the framework’s hardware-acceleration documentation before assuming a model will run on the NPU.
Why shared memory helps model size
Because the graphics processor uses system memory, a model is not restricted to a small dedicated VRAM partition. That can make larger quantized models practical, but the actual fit depends on parameter count, quantization level, context length, runtime overhead and how much memory Windows and other programs consume. A 128GB specification is therefore an important capacity advantage, not a promise that every 128GB-scale model will run at useful speed.

Can it handle video, photo and other creative work?
The EVO-X3 is well suited to projects that benefit from both many CPU cores and a large shared memory pool. TechRadar reported that Premiere Pro, Lightroom and Photoshop ran smoothly in its test setup. It also measured an approximately 18-second cold boot to a usable Windows desktop, which is convenient for a machine that may be switched between desk and studio tasks.
In practice, the 16-core processor can keep export, proxy generation, batch processing and background renders moving while the integrated GPU handles timeline previews or effects that support it. The 2TB and 4TB configurations provide a useful starting point for media, but video libraries can consume that space quickly; reserving the second M.2 slot for a dedicated project or cache drive is sensible.
Software versions, codecs, plug-ins, source resolution and effects determine the final experience. The smooth-app observations above belong to the reviewer’s configuration and should not be treated as a guarantee for every Premiere Pro, Lightroom or Photoshop project.
How well does the Radeon 8060S play games?
The 40-compute-unit Radeon 8060S is capable of Full HD gaming and can handle some WQHD titles when detail settings are reduced. It is substantially more capable than the integrated graphics in typical office mini PCs, but it is still an integrated solution sharing memory and power with the CPU.
That makes the EVO-X3 a poor gaming-value purchase at nearly $3,800. A conventional desktop with a discrete graphics card can deliver more frames per dollar, while a less expensive mini PC can cover casual gaming. Choose the EVO-X3 for its memory and workstation characteristics; consider gaming an additional capability rather than the buying justification.
How do the cooling and power modes affect performance?
The system provides Silent, Balanced and Performance modes. TechRadar found that Performance mode permits short power peaks of up to 140W. Silent mode favors lower noise, while Balanced aims for a middle ground; exact fan behavior and sustained clocks depend on room temperature, workload and the selected profile.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For long exports or model runs, Performance mode is the logical starting point, but it can increase fan noise and power draw. Silent mode is more appropriate for light work or a recording environment. Allowing the machine to remain in Balanced mode during ordinary use avoids treating every browser session like a render job.
GMKtec describes the design as balancing performance, efficiency and thermal stability for continuous professional AI and creative workloads. That is a product claim, while PCWorld’s report of stable cooling supplies the practical review evidence. Neither should be read as a guarantee that every sustained workload will run silently or at peak speed.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
Can you upgrade the EVO-X3’s RAM and SSD?
The RAM cannot be upgraded. All 128GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory is soldered to the system board, so the purchase configuration is the maximum capacity for the life of the machine. This is the most important decision to make before ordering: there is no later memory replacement if your models or projects outgrow the allocation.
Storage is much more flexible. The chassis has two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots. The 2TB and 4TB configurations described use one slot, leaving the other available for a second NVMe SSD. A second drive can separate operating-system files from media, models, scratch data or project archives and avoids replacing the original drive simply to gain capacity.

- Confirm that your exact configuration still has the unused M.2 slot; the reviewed and listed 2TB/4TB versions do.
- Use a PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 drive to match the documented interface.
- Decide whether the new disk will hold active projects, model files, cache data or backups; those roles have different endurance and capacity priorities.
- Keep an independent backup. A second internal SSD is additional working storage, not protection against accidental deletion or hardware failure.
What ports and networking does it provide?
The front panel is deliberately minimal. It has one USB-A port at 5Gbps, one USB-A 2.0 port and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. The rear panel carries most of the workstation connectivity.
| Location | Port or connection | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Front | USB-A, 5Gbps | Fast external storage, cameras or everyday accessories |
| Front | USB-A, 2.0 | Keyboard, mouse, licensing dongles and low-bandwidth devices |
| Front | 3.5mm combo audio | Headset or analog headphones/microphone |
| Rear | HDMI 2.1 | Direct display connection |
| Rear | USB4-C, 40Gbps, with DisplayPort functionality | High-speed peripherals, displays and a dock |
| Rear | USB-A, 10Gbps | Fast storage and peripherals |
| Rear | 2.5GbE Ethernet | High-speed wired network or NAS access |
| Rear | OCuLink PCIe 4.0 x4 | External desktop GPU expansion |
| Rear | DC input | Power |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 7; Bluetooth 5.4 | Wireless networking and accessories |
The limitation is not speed but quantity. There is only one USB-C port, there is no front USB-C connector and there is no card reader. A USB4 dock or hub is realistic for a desk with displays, a camera, external drives, Ethernet and multiple input devices. Budget for that accessory; it is not part of the EVO-X3’s stated configuration.
How does OCuLink external-GPU expansion work?
OCuLink provides a direct PCIe 4.0 x4 link to an external desktop graphics card. Compared with sending graphics traffic through USB4, its direct PCIe path has less protocol overhead, so it is the more performance-oriented expansion option on this machine.
What you need
- The EVO-X3 with its built-in OCuLink port.
- An OCuLink eGPU dock or enclosure and a compatible desktop graphics card.
- A separate power supply capable of powering the card and enclosure.
- Display cables and, depending on the setup, the correct driver package.
The external GPU, dock, cable and power hardware add cost and desk complexity. None should be assumed to be included with the mini PC.

Safe connection procedure
- Save work and shut down Windows completely.
- Turn off the eGPU enclosure and the EVO-X3.
- Connect the OCuLink cable firmly to the mini PC and the enclosure.
- Power on the eGPU enclosure, then start the EVO-X3 according to the enclosure manufacturer’s instructions.
- Install or update the graphics driver and confirm the external card appears in Windows before launching a workload.
- To disconnect, close applications, shut down the PC, power off the enclosure and only then remove the cable.
OCuLink is not hot-pluggable. Connecting or disconnecting it while the system is running can cause device errors or instability, so treat it like an internal PCIe connection rather than a USB accessory.

The price is easiest to defend when 128GB of shared memory is a hard requirement and a compact enclosure matters. Building a system around local AI, heavy creative work or a workstation that may later receive an external GPU can make the premium rational. The value proposition is much weaker when the machine will spend most of its time in office applications or conventional games.
How it compares with the EVO-X2
PCWorld identifies the EVO-X2 as the closest in-family alternative. It offers similar baseline performance for less money, but it does not emphasize the EVO-X3’s larger chassis and built-in OCuLink capability. If you do not need the EVO-X3’s memory capacity or external-GPU path, the less expensive model deserves consideration; if those two features define the project, the EVO-X3 is the more appropriate platform.
| Buying situation | EVO-X3 decision |
|---|---|
| Local AI models need a large shared memory pool | Strong fit, assuming your software can use the CPU/GPU/NPU resources |
| Professional photo or video work in a compact space | Good fit, with a second SSD and dock likely useful |
| Future desktop GPU expansion is important | Strong fit because OCuLink is built in, but budget for the complete eGPU setup |
| General office, web and video calls | Hard to justify at this price |
| Gaming-first purchase | Poor value compared with a discrete-GPU desktop |
| You may need more than 128GB later | Risky, because the memory is permanently soldered |
What should you check before ordering?
- Memory: verify that 128GB is sufficient for your longest-lived models and projects; there is no RAM upgrade.
- Storage: choose 2TB or 4TB based on immediate needs, then reserve the second M.2 slot for expansion.
- Desk connectivity: count displays, card readers, drives and input devices. The single USB4-C port may require a dock.
- Graphics plan: decide whether integrated Radeon 8060S performance is enough or whether an OCuLink eGPU is part of the budget.
- Noise policy: choose between Silent, Balanced and Performance modes according to your room and sustained workload.
- Total cost: include a dock, second NVMe SSD, eGPU enclosure, desktop graphics card and power supply where applicable.
- Region and timing: recheck the US price, stock, tax and warranty terms at checkout because the quoted $3,799-level listings can change.

Who should buy the GMKtec EVO-X3?
Buy it if you need a compact workstation with 128GB of shared memory for local AI, large creative projects or similarly demanding software, and you value the option of adding a desktop GPU through OCuLink. Plan the storage and peripheral accessories at the same time so the finished desk matches the machine’s capabilities.
Skip it if your workload is mainly office software, browsing or ordinary gaming, if you expect to upgrade memory later, or if the complete system-plus-accessory cost approaches that of a much faster discrete-GPU desktop. The EVO-X3 is impressive hardware in a specialized role, not a universal mini-PC bargain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the EVO-X3 run local language models without an internet connection?
Yes, compatible runtimes can operate locally, but the practical model size and speed depend on quantization, context length, memory use and whether the software targets the CPU, Radeon GPU or XDNA 2 NPU. The 128GB pool gives you more headroom than most mini PCs, but it does not make every model fast or automatically compatible.
Is an external graphics card included with the EVO-X3?
No. The computer supplies the OCuLink interface; the dock or enclosure, desktop GPU, cable and power supply are separate purchases. Include those items in the budget before treating OCuLink as a complete graphics solution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does the EVO-X3 support a second internal SSD?
Yes. It has two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots, and the documented 2TB and 4TB configurations leave one slot free. That second drive is the simplest way to separate active projects or model files from the boot volume.
Will a USB4 dock solve the EVO-X3’s limited front connectivity?
A USB4 dock can add ports and displays through the 40Gbps rear USB4-C connection, making it practical for a multi-peripheral desk. It does not add memory or change the OCuLink connection, and dock capability varies by model, so check its display, Ethernet and storage specifications.
