Steam is not showing a broad active outage as of October 28, 2026. The service did suffer a genuine incident on October 26, when users in several countries reported an endless “loading user data” screen, failed sign-ins and connection errors. Crowdsourced reports later dropped toward normal levels, and independent monitors now show Steam operating for most players. Valve has not confirmed what caused the incident.
Is Steam down right now?

IsDown’s check at 00:30 UTC on October 28 showed Steam “working normally” and recorded zero user reports in the previous 24 hours. Reports began climbing during the morning in North American and UK time zones. Android Authority reported more than 1,000 Downdetector reports, with complaints from Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Poland and other countries. TechRadar’s timeline placed an early spike around 4:30 a.m. Eastern Time (9:30 a.m. British Summer Time), with almost 500 reports in the United States and about 450 in the UK. Entireweb reported more than 300 reports in one hour.
The incident was real and broad enough to affect users across multiple regions, but it was not proven to be a complete failure of every Steam component. SteamDB’s status page remained green while complaints were rising, and coverage noted that the Store, Community, Web API and Connection Managers were shown as operational. That combination is consistent with an intermittent service or client-side problem affecting a meaningful subset of accounts rather than every Steam request failing.

No. Component monitors remaining green means some parts of Steam continued responding even while many players could not log in. A service can accept traffic for existing sessions or selected regions while authentication, account-data retrieval or another shared path fails for others.

SteamDashboard, an independent monitor that auto-updates every 60 seconds, reported 99.5% uptime across 965 checks since July 2, 2026. Its history also lists short multi-component incidents on October 22–23. These figures describe monitor observations, not a Valve incident report, and cannot determine exactly which users were affected on October 26.
Did Valve explain the cause?
Not in the cited coverage. Valve did not publish a confirmed root-cause statement or an official incident-duration report for October 26. PC Gamer described an apparent association between the problem and purchasing a game or starting its download, but that remains an unconfirmed user-observation theory. - Check Steam’s server status first. Valve Support specifically advises checking the Steam Server Status page to determine whether a system-wide incident is already known.
- Open another website. If other sites also fail, investigate your internet connection rather than Steam. If the web works but Steam does not, continue with the next checks.
- Restart the network path. Reboot the router and, if possible, connect the computer directly with Ethernet. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable can help identify whether Wi-Fi interference is involved; it cannot repair a Valve outage.
- Test without wireless or powerline interference. Steam Support flags wireless and powerline networking as possible sources of intermittent failures. A temporary wired test separates those issues from a Steam-side incident.
- Review security software. Check firewall and antivirus rules for Steam and its game traffic, following Steam Support’s guidance. Do not permanently disable protection; use a controlled test and restore normal rules afterward.
Can Steam Offline Mode help?
Offline Mode can keep compatible single-player games available when online services are unreachable, provided the game and required files were prepared for offline use. It cannot restore account login, the Store, Community features, cloud synchronization or multiplayer matchmaking. If the client cannot authenticate at all, switching to Offline Mode may not be offered until Steam has a locally valid session.

What should I do if I still can’t log in to Steam?
First compare your symptoms with the status pages and the reports from your region. If those sources show normal operation, perform the wired-network and firewall checks above, then restart Steam and the router. Persistent failures limited to one computer or network point to a local configuration problem; simultaneous failures on multiple devices and networks are stronger evidence of a Steam-side or regional incident.

During a confirmed outage, avoid repeatedly changing passwords, deleting game files or reinstalling large titles. Those actions do not fix an authentication service failure and can create additional recovery work. Wait for status reports to return toward baseline, then sign in again.

Can I play my Steam games without signing in?
