Open-source software is neither automatically safe nor automatically dangerous. Its risk depends on the exact project and version, how you obtained it, its dependencies and build process, the license, your configuration, and whether anyone is maintaining and monitoring it. A well-maintained project with verifiable releases can be a sound choice; an abandoned package from an untrusted mirror can create serious exposure.

This checklist turns guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) into a repeatable decision. Use it before installation, during approval, and throughout the software’s life in production.

What does “safe” mean for open-source software?

Safety is a set of properties, not a label attached to a license or a hosting site. You need reasonable confidence that the code is authentic, vulnerabilities are discovered and fixed, dependencies are understood, the license fits your use, and the deployment limits damage if something goes wrong.

Public source code can improve review and accountability, but visibility does not guarantee that anyone has inspected every line. Closed-source software can also contain vulnerabilities; the difference is that open-source users can often inspect, build, test, and independently verify components. The practical question is therefore whether a particular project has controls and evidence strong enough for your situation.

“Open-source software components are pervasive, and federal agencies should understand their suppliers’ usage of open-source software components by considering the capabilities recommended below.” — National Institute of Standards and Technology, Software Security in Supply Chains: Open Source Software Controls.

How do I check an open-source project before installing it?

Work through these checks in order. Record what you find so another person can reproduce the decision and so you can identify the component later if a vulnerability is announced.

1. Identify the exact project and version

Start with the canonical repository or official package registry, the package name, the release tag, and the edition you intend to deploy. Record a checksum or digest when the publisher provides one. Distinguish the upstream project from similarly named forks, repackaged downloads, and distribution-specific builds.

Do not let a package manager silently select a moving branch or an old release merely because it satisfies a version range. Pin the version you approved and keep the lockfile or equivalent record with your application. NIST recommends obtaining components through secure channels and trustworthy repositories; this first identity check is what lets you verify that you did so.

2. Is the project maintained and mature enough?

Review the release history, issue tracker, documentation, and contributor activity. Look for recent stable releases, maintainers who respond to security-relevant issues, and more than one person capable of reviewing and releasing code. A project that has only one inactive maintainer presents a different continuity risk from one with a documented team and regular releases.

Check whether dependencies are updated, security-relevant behavior is covered by tests, and the project explains how to report a vulnerability privately. Alpha or beta status is not automatically unacceptable, but it should be an explicit risk decision rather than an accidental choice. OpenSSF evaluation criteria treat release maturity, maintainer depth, testing, documentation, and vulnerability-reporting practices as meaningful signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. What is the vulnerability history and response quality?

Search the project’s own advisories, relevant CVE and OSV records, issue discussions, and release notes. For each significant flaw, determine when it was disclosed, whether a fix was produced, how quickly corrected packages were distributed, and whether the version you selected contains that fix.

A history of vulnerabilities is not an automatic rejection. Mature projects can have more publicly documented issues simply because they have better reporting and visibility. The warning sign is an unresolved or repeatedly mishandled issue, an unclear affected-version range, or a release process that leaves users without a practical upgrade path. OWASP recommends monitoring vulnerability sources and automating dependency checks rather than relying on a one-time review.

4. How transparent is the dependency and build supply chain?

Map direct and transitive dependencies, including build tools and libraries used only during compilation. Generate or obtain a software bill of materials (SBOM), then retain it with the version you deployed. Scan source code, published binaries, container images, and build dependencies because a weakness can enter at any of those layers.

CISA recommends automating SBOM generation and verification and using software-composition-analysis tools connected to vulnerability databases. Automation improves coverage, but it does not replace judgment: scanners can miss newly disclosed issues, flag vulnerabilities that are unreachable in your configuration, or fail to identify malicious behavior that has no known signature.

5. Can you verify provenance and integrity?

Prefer releases that are signed or otherwise accompanied by verifiable provenance, documented build instructions, and reproducible-build results where available. Verify checksums or digests against an authenticated publisher channel, use pinned versions, and commit lockfiles so an indirect dependency cannot change between builds.

Package-manager protections help only when you use the official registry configuration and review changes. A signed tag proves control of a signing key at a point in time; it does not prove that the code is secure. Combine signature or checksum verification with review of the source, build environment, and release notes. NIST emphasizes integrity and provenance, while OWASP recommends lockfiles and provenance verification as supply-chain controls.

6. Does the license fit your intended use?

Read the license attached to the exact component and confirm that it permits your planned use, modification, and distribution. Check notice, attribution, source-disclosure, patent, and copyleft obligations that may apply when you combine or distribute the software.

License compatibility is a security-adjacent operational requirement: an incompatible license can force an emergency replacement or an unplanned release change. OpenSSF includes license compatibility in project evaluation. Ask legal or compliance specialists when the component will be embedded in a product, redistributed to customers, or combined with software under different terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. What happens when you deploy it?

Reduce the consequences of compromise with least privilege and isolation. Run a service as a dedicated non-administrator account, grant only the files, network destinations, and system calls it needs, and separate it from sensitive workloads where practical. Keep secrets outside source code and restrict their access and rotation.

For development infrastructure, protect branches, require peer review for changes, enforce multifactor authentication, and log administrative and release events. In production, monitor relevant process, network, and authentication activity so unusual behavior can be investigated. OWASP identifies access control, peer review, secret protection, and monitoring as important supply-chain safeguards.

8. Can you update, remove, or roll back the component?

Assign an owner for upgrades before approval. Subscribe to the project’s advisories, keep an inventory linking the component to the applications and versions that use it, and test updates in an environment that resembles production. Define how you will withdraw a package, disable a feature, or roll back to a known-good build if an update causes a regression.

Vulnerability management is continuous: a clean assessment today does not cover a new dependency release, maintainer-account compromise, or newly disclosed flaw tomorrow. CISA and NIST treat inventory, monitoring, remediation, and incident response as continuing responsibilities rather than a single installation check.

How should I compare two open-source projects that solve the same problem?

Compare evidence, not popularity alone. The stronger candidate is the one whose maintenance, release, security, supply-chain, and licensing evidence matches the impact of the workload you will place on it.

Comparison area Evidence to collect Risk question
Maintenance and maturity Stable release cadence, responsive issue handling, contributor and maintainer depth, current dependencies, security-focused tests, documentation Will someone be able to fix and support this component when conditions change?
Vulnerability response Advisories, CVE or OSV entries, disclosure quality, fix availability, release timing, affected-version clarity Can you learn about a flaw and obtain a corrected version quickly?
Dependency and build transparency SBOM, transitive-dependency records, build tools, source and binary scanning results Can you see what will actually run and where a weakness could enter?
Provenance and distribution Official repository or registry, signed artifacts, checksums, lockfiles, documented or reproducible builds Can you demonstrate that the artifact you installed is the one the project released?
License fit License text and obligations for use, modification, distribution, notices, and source disclosure Can you operate and distribute the software without a legal or compliance surprise?
Operational fit Documentation, support channels, isolation options, logging, update and rollback procedures Can your team run it safely and recover if it fails or is compromised?
Blast radius Privileges, data access, network reach, secrets handled, and affected systems How much damage could one compromised component cause?

Weight the last row heavily. A small command-line utility that processes non-sensitive files can tolerate more uncertainty than an authentication service, build runner, payment component, or library embedded in software deployed to millions of users. If the evidence is similar, choose the project with the clearer release and incident-response process rather than treating download counts as a security score.

What should I verify in the package and build process?

Make the approved version reproducible for your team. Store the package identifier, version, digest, SBOM, lockfile, source revision, and build configuration with the release record. Ensure that CI systems retrieve dependencies from controlled registries and fail when an unapproved version appears.

Review who can publish packages, alter release workflows, or approve changes to protected branches. Require multifactor authentication for those accounts and independent review for changes that affect build scripts or dependency resolution. A compromise of a maintainer account or build service can be more consequential than a defect in the application code itself, so provenance controls must cover the path from source commit to artifact.

What are the most common mistakes when trusting open-source software?

  • Equating public code with audited code: availability for inspection does not show that qualified reviewers examined the relevant paths.
  • Installing the first search result: similarly named forks and unofficial mirrors may have different maintainers, code, and release practices.
  • Checking only direct dependencies: transitive libraries and build tools can introduce vulnerabilities or malicious changes.
  • Using a floating version: an unconstrained update can change behavior without a deliberate review and can make incident reconstruction difficult.
  • Stopping after the initial scan: vulnerability databases and project advisories change, so inventories and monitoring must remain active.
  • Ignoring configuration: excessive privileges, exposed secrets, open network access, and missing logs can turn a manageable flaw into a major incident.
  • Treating a past CVE as a permanent verdict: the relevant questions are whether it was handled responsibly, fixed, distributed, and corrected in your chosen version.

How do I make the decision for a high-impact system?

Set a minimum evidence threshold before procurement or deployment. For a component that can access sensitive data or control production systems, require an identified owner, a pinned and verifiable release, an SBOM, vulnerability monitoring, a documented reporting channel, tested updates, and a rollback plan. Require stronger isolation and review when the project is immature or has a shallow maintainer base.

If a project cannot provide some evidence, document the gap and compensate with containment, limited data access, additional testing, or a different component. Do not convert missing information into an assumption of safety. Official frameworks from NIST, OpenSSF, OWASP, and CISA provide evaluation questions and controls, not a universal pass/fail percentage for every project; your risk tolerance and deployment context determine the final decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is open-source software safer than proprietary software?

Neither category is inherently safer. Open-source projects may offer inspectable code and independent builds, while proprietary vendors may provide dedicated security teams and contractual support; in both cases, maintenance quality, provenance, vulnerability response, and deployment controls determine practical risk.

Can I trust a GitHub project with many stars?

Stars measure interest, not code review, release integrity, or incident response. Check the tagged release, commit and release permissions, recent maintainer activity, dependency records, advisories, and the way artifacts are published before treating popularity as evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is an SBOM, and do I need one for a small application?

An SBOM is an inventory of the components and versions that make up a software artifact, including transitive dependencies. Even for a small application, it helps you identify affected versions quickly when a vulnerability is disclosed; the depth and automation can be scaled to the application’s impact.

Should I reject a project that has ever had a security vulnerability?

No. Examine the disclosure, fix, release timing, affected versions, and whether your deployed version includes the correction. A project that reports and repairs flaws transparently may present less current risk than one with little public history but no clear reporting or maintenance process.
