Yes. Joplin’s core note-taking and to-do application is free, open source, offline-first software. You do not have to buy a subscription to install it, write notes, use Markdown, or keep your data available on your phone or computer without an internet connection. Payment is for Joplin Cloud, an optional hosted service that synchronizes notes and adds web access, publishing, collaboration and email-to-note features. You can also synchronize Joplin through other targets such as Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive or the local filesystem.
The current Joplin Cloud listing, accessed October 26, 2026, has four hosted tiers: Basic from €2.40 per month when billed yearly, Pro from €4.79, Pro 100 GB from €7.99, and Teams from €6.69 per user. The right choice depends less on the app itself than on storage, attachment size, sharing, administration and support.

Joplin is free to download and use as a standalone application. Joplin’s official help description calls it “a free, open source note taking and to-do application” that can handle a large number of notes organized into notebooks. The application is available across desktop and mobile platforms, supports Markdown notes, and can be extended with plugins and themes.
Joplin is also designed to be offline-first. Notes are kept on the device, so you can read and edit them when the phone or computer has no connection. Internet access becomes necessary only for synchronization, publishing, web access or other connected services.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Joplin’s homepage says the application stores notes in an open format and uses end-to-end encryption. Those are Joplin’s published claims; the exact protection you receive also depends on how you configure synchronization and which service you select.
Do I have to pay to sync Joplin between my phone and computer?
No. Joplin Cloud is optional. Joplin’s synchronization documentation lists several targets besides its own hosted service: Nextcloud, Amazon S3-compatible storage, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive and a local filesystem.
Using one of these alternatives can let you synchronize without a Joplin Cloud subscription, but you may need to operate a server, create an account with another provider or enter endpoint and credential details yourself. Alternative targets do not necessarily provide Joplin Cloud’s hosted web application, public note publishing, notebook collaboration or email-to-note workflow.
How to set up a non-Joplin sync target
- Install Joplin on each device and create or import your notebooks locally.
- Open the application’s synchronization settings and select a supported target such as Nextcloud, WebDAV, S3, Dropbox, OneDrive or the local filesystem.
- Enter the provider’s server address, bucket or folder information and credentials where required.
- Run an initial synchronization and wait for it to finish before making large edits on another device.
- Configure the same target on your other devices, then create a test note and confirm that it arrives everywhere.
A local-filesystem target is useful when the devices can reach a shared folder, but it is not the same as an internet backup. A cloud provider or self-hosted server may be a better fit when the devices are in different locations.
What does Joplin Cloud add?
Joplin Cloud is a web service designed specifically for Joplin. All four listed hosted tiers include synchronization across as many devices as desired, note publishing to the internet, the Joplin Web App, collaboration on a notebook and Joplin Cloud AI in beta.
- Cross-device synchronization: keep notebooks and attachments aligned on phones, tablets and computers without configuring a separate storage provider.
- Joplin Web App: access your notes through a browser in addition to installed applications.
- Publishing: publish a note to the internet when you need a web-readable version.
- Notebook collaboration: work with other people in a shared notebook; the available controls depend on the tier.
- Joplin Cloud AI (beta): listed on every hosted tier, with the beta label indicating that the feature may change.
These features are what you are paying for. The free application remains capable of local note-taking even if you never create a Joplin Cloud account.

How much does each Joplin Cloud plan cost?
The following prices are the current Joplin listing accessed October 26, 2026. Monthly figures are the regular month-to-month rates. Yearly figures show the lower effective monthly price and the stated annual charge; taxes, currency conversion and future price changes are not specified here.
| Plan | Monthly price | Yearly billing | Storage | Maximum note or attachment | Notebook sharing | Email-to-note | Administration | Sharing permissions | Priority support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | €2.99/month | €2.40/month, €28.69/year | 2 GB | 10 MB | No | No | No multi-user management | No | No |
| Pro | €5.99/month | €4.79/month, €57.48/year | 30 GB | 200 MB | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Not listed | No |
| Pro 100 GB | €9.99/month | €7.99/month, €95.88/year | 100 GB | 200 MB | Yes | Yes | Not listed | Not listed | No |
| Teams | €7.99/month per user | €6.69/month per user, €80.28/year per user | 50 GB per user | 200 MB | Yes | Yes | Multi-user management and consolidated billing | Yes | Yes |
Teams requires at least two users, so its minimum subscription is two seats. The storage figure is allocated per user as listed, while the prices are also charged per user.
What is included in Basic, Pro and Pro 100 GB?
Basic: inexpensive hosted sync for one person
Basic costs €2.99 monthly or €28.69 for a year paid upfront. It provides 2 GB of storage and limits an individual note or attachment to 10 MB. It includes the common hosted capabilities—device synchronization, web access, publishing, notebook collaboration and beta AI—but the plan does not list notebook sharing with other people, email-to-note, a customizable publishing banner, multi-user management, consolidated billing, sharing permissions or priority support.
Basic therefore suits a solo user whose notes are mostly text and who wants Joplin-hosted synchronization rather than configuring another provider. The 10 MB ceiling is the practical constraint: large scans, audio, video or image-heavy notebooks can reach it quickly.
Recommended Free Tools
Pro: larger files and personal sharing features
Pro costs €5.99 monthly or €57.48 annually when billed yearly. Storage rises to 30 GB, and the maximum note or attachment size rises to 200 MB. Pro adds the ability to share a notebook, send content into Joplin through email-to-note and customize the publishing banner.
Choose Pro when you need those workflows or regularly attach files that would not fit Basic’s 10 MB limit. It is also the middle option for a single account that needs substantially more space but not the 100 GB allowance.
Pro 100 GB: more storage without team administration
Pro 100 GB costs €9.99 monthly or €95.88 annually on yearly billing. It keeps Pro’s 200 MB maximum note or attachment and its sharing, email-to-note and banner features, while increasing storage to 100 GB.
This tier changes capacity rather than governance. The listing does not add Teams-style multi-user management, consolidated billing, sharing permissions or priority support to Pro 100 GB, so it is aimed at an individual or informal group that needs room for a large archive.
Teams: controls for multiple users
Teams costs €7.99 per user each month or €6.69 per user each month when billed yearly, with an annual charge of €80.28 per user. Each user receives 50 GB and a 200 MB maximum note or attachment, and the plan requires at least two users.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Teams adds multi-user management, consolidated billing, sharing permissions and priority support. Those controls matter when an organization needs to decide who can access shared notebooks, manage several accounts centrally or obtain a higher-support channel. A solo user cannot take advantage of the plan’s minimum-seat requirement unless another user also needs an account.
Is Joplin Cloud worth paying for?
Joplin Cloud is worth considering when convenience and hosted features are more valuable to you than configuring another synchronization target. It puts synchronization, browser access and publishing under one Joplin-specific service, and Pro-level plans add collaboration and email-to-note without requiring a separate integration.
It may not be worth the subscription if you only need local notes, already operate a compatible storage service or are comfortable maintaining your own sync setup. Because the application is offline-first, declining Joplin Cloud does not remove your ability to use Joplin; it only means choosing another route for keeping devices in sync.

Choose Basic when
- Your notebooks are primarily text and small images.
- You want hosted synchronization at the lowest listed monthly price.
- You do not need notebook sharing, email-to-note or team controls.
Choose Pro when
- You need to share notebooks or collect notes by email.
- You need 200 MB files but 30 GB total storage is sufficient.
- You want a customizable banner on published notes.
Choose Pro 100 GB when
- Your archive is likely to exceed 30 GB.
- You need Pro’s collaboration and publishing features but not centralized administration.
- You regularly keep substantial attachments inside Joplin.
Choose Teams when
- At least two people need managed accounts.
- An administrator must control sharing permissions.
- Consolidated billing and priority support justify the per-user cost.
What should you check before subscribing?
First, estimate both total storage and the size of your largest note or attachment. A plan can have enough aggregate capacity but still reject an individual file that exceeds its per-item limit. Basic’s 2 GB total and 10 MB per-item limit are materially different from the 30 GB or 100 GB Pro allowances with 200 MB per-item limits.
Next, separate publishing from private collaboration. Publishing makes a note available on the internet, while notebook sharing is the collaboration feature whose availability changes by tier. If you need people to contribute to a notebook, Basic is not listed as providing that capability.
Finally, decide whether administration is a real requirement. Teams is the only listed tier with multi-user management, consolidated billing, sharing permissions and priority support. Paying for extra storage on Pro 100 GB does not provide those controls.

Where is Joplin Cloud hosted, and what about security?
Joplin states that its cloud data and servers are located in Paris, France. That location may matter for organizations with data-residency requirements or policies governing transfers outside their home country.
Joplin also describes the application as open source, says notes use an open format and says it uses end-to-end encryption. Treat these as the vendor’s published statements rather than an independent security certification. Before storing regulated or confidential material, check your organization’s requirements and the current Joplin documentation for encryption behavior, account protection and recovery procedures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use Joplin Server instead of Joplin Cloud?
Joplin’s synchronization options include self-hosted and third-party targets, so Joplin Cloud is not the only hosted-style route. The listed alternatives include Nextcloud, S3, WebDAV, Dropbox, OneDrive and local filesystem synchronization. Joplin’s current listing also names a 14-day free trial for Joplin Server Business, which is a separate server offering rather than one of the four Joplin Cloud tiers compared above.
A self-hosted approach can provide more control over infrastructure and location, but it shifts setup, maintenance, backups and access management to you or your organization. Joplin Cloud trades that administration for a recurring fee and Joplin-managed hosting.
What happens when you switch synchronization providers?
Your notes are stored locally by the application, so changing providers is a configuration decision rather than a requirement to abandon Joplin. Before switching, allow the current target to finish synchronizing and make a separate backup or export of important notebooks. Then configure the new target and verify that a small test notebook appears on a second device before moving your full library.
Do not configure two targets as if they were one shared database. Treat each provider as a distinct synchronization destination and confirm which copy is authoritative during the transition.

Frequently asked questions
Can I publish one note without sharing my whole notebook?
Yes. Joplin Cloud lists note publishing and notebook sharing as separate capabilities. That means you can use the publishing workflow for a web-readable note without making every note in a notebook part of a collaborative share.
Does every Joplin Cloud plan include the web app?
Yes. The current listing includes the Joplin Web App on Basic, Pro, Pro 100 GB and Teams. The difference between plans is mainly capacity and advanced sharing or administrative controls, not whether browser access exists.
Is Joplin Cloud AI a finished, fixed feature?
No. Joplin Cloud AI is marked beta on the hosted plans. Its inclusion is therefore subject to change, and you should not base a long-term purchasing decision on an assumed permanent feature set.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is Teams the best value for a family of two?
Teams is the only listed tier with multi-user management, consolidated billing and sharing permissions, and it starts at two users. If two people need those controls, its per-user structure fits the requirement; if one person simply wants more storage, Pro 100 GB avoids paying for team administration that is not needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
