InMotion VPS can be worth buying if you can administer a Linux server yourself and value generous resources for the introductory price. It is a weaker fit if you need routine server management, fast hands-on troubleshooting, or reliably demonstrated performance: renewal prices rise substantially, some useful extras cost more, and Tom’s Hardware reported mediocre performance and very slow support in its 2025 review. The key decision is not just which tier to choose. It is whether you want to trade lower starting prices and root-level control for responsibility over setup, patching, security, software, and much of the troubleshooting.
Is InMotion VPS worth it?
For a developer or team with server-administration experience, InMotion’s self-managed VPS is a conditional buy. The plans list substantial vCPU, memory, and NVMe storage allocations, full root and SSH access, selectable Linux distributions, dedicated IPs, snapshots, DDoS protection, and a stated 99.99% uptime guarantee. Those features give an administrator room to configure a server for a specific workload.

That value needs to be judged against the price after the introductory term, not just the first monthly figure. It also depends on what you must add: cPanel or Control Web Panel, for example, is optional rather than included in the listed self-managed plans. Most importantly, self-managed means you handle operating-system and software configuration, security patches, migrations, and control-panel installation and licensing. InMotion’s stated support scope for these plans covers hardware, network, and data-center matters.
There is also a material independent-evidence caution. In a review published on 4 February 2025, Tom’s Hardware described its tested VPS as noticeably slower than many competitors and criticized support after reporting an 11-day wait for a response while troubleshooting SSL; the site still could not load securely over HTTPS. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of what every customer will see, but it makes this a less comfortable choice when performance-sensitive hosting or urgent support is central to the purchase.

What do InMotion’s self-managed VPS plans include?
InMotion lists four self-managed tiers. The larger tiers add CPU, memory, storage, and dedicated IPs; the listed bandwidth changes from 5TB on the entry tier to unlimited on the other three.

| Third | 12 | 24GB | 360GB | Unlimited | 5 |
| Top | 16 | 32GB | 460GB | Unlimited | 10 |
The official self-managed plan listing also includes full root and SSH access, customer-selected AlmaLinux, Debian, or Ubuntu, 1Gbps networking, on-demand snapshots, always-on DDoS protection, global data centers, 24/7 hardware and network support, a 99.99% uptime guarantee, and a 90-day money-back guarantee. The 16-vCPU tier is identified as Docker-compatible. These are listed plan features; they do not mean that InMotion configures your applications or maintains your operating system on a self-managed account.
What do the resources mean when choosing a tier?
Use the listed allocations as a starting point, not as a performance prediction. More vCPU and memory give an administrator more resources to allocate, while storage capacity sets the ceiling for the operating system, applications, databases, and stored files. The plan figures alone do not establish how a particular website or workload will perform; Tom’s Hardware’s test is a reason to look beyond specifications if speed is a deciding factor.
Bandwidth policy is a visible distinction: the 4-vCPU plan lists 5TB, while the 8-, 12-, and 16-vCPU plans list unlimited bandwidth. If your workload depends on high data transfer, confirm how the current plan terms define and administer that allowance before buying. The supplied plan information does not spell out usage conditions for “unlimited.”
How much does InMotion VPS renew at?
Renewal cost is a major part of the value calculation. InMotion’s displayed promotional offers vary by term: the lowest listed introductory offer for each tier is not the only available offer, and the related renewal prices are higher. The figures below reflect the current displayed pricing information in the product materials, not a permanent rate card; check the checkout page for the exact term and renewal price before committing.

| Tier | Lowest displayed introductory offer | Renewal for that offer | Other displayed offers and renewals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 vCPU | From $9.99/month on a 24-month term | $16.99/month | $13.99–$16.99/month, renewing at $26.99–$36.99/month |
| 8 vCPU | From $19.99/month | $46.99/month | Higher offers renewing at $56.99–$66.99/month |
| 12 vCPU | From $31.99/month | $76.99/month | Higher offers renewing at $86.99–$96.99/month |
| 16 vCPU | From $39.99/month | $111.99/month | Higher offers renewing at $121.99–$131.99/month |
The 4-vCPU entry price is explicitly tied to a 24-month term. The listed material does not specify the term behind every other displayed offer, so do not assume the lowest figure is available month to month or that every renewal pairing applies to every checkout configuration. Before ordering, verify the billing term, introductory total, renewal amount, and any add-ons shown in your own cart.
How should you compare the introductory and renewal prices?
Compare the cost across the period you realistically expect to keep the server, then account for add-ons you actually need. A low first-term monthly rate can make a plan appear inexpensive while its recurring renewal is several times higher. If you plan to migrate before renewal, include the engineering time and risk of moving again; if you expect to stay, use the renewal figure as the more representative ongoing cost.
Optional software can change the total further. In its February 2025 checkout test, Tom’s Hardware saw Backup Manager listed at $35.88 per year, Control Web Panel at $60 per year, and cPanel at $306 per year. These are amounts observed in that review, not guaranteed current prices; confirm current charges at checkout. Because the self-managed plan lists control panels as optional, do not treat any of those panel prices as included in the plan rate.
Is InMotion VPS managed or unmanaged?
The self-managed plans are unmanaged: InMotion supplies the VPS infrastructure, while you take responsibility for configuring and maintaining the server. InMotion also offers managed VPS, using the same underlying hardware and data centers but adding server work handled by its staff.
| Responsibility | Self-managed VPS | Managed VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system setup and configuration | Customer | InMotion handles server setup |
| Operating-system and security patching | Customer | InMotion handles patching |
| Control panel | Customer installs and licenses an optional panel | InMotion maintains cPanel/WHM |
| Migration | Customer responsibility | InMotion provides migration assistance |
| Software and troubleshooting | Customer configures software; support scope is hardware, network, and data-center matters | Software installation assistance and broader server troubleshooting |
InMotion positions self-managed plans for developers and teams with sysadmin experience, and managed plans for businesses without a server administrator. The choice is about operational responsibility as much as price: lower-cost self-management gives you direct control, but it also means planning for setup, patching, backups, migrations, and incident response yourself. Managed service transfers routine server work to InMotion, but the supplied pricing information does not give a managed-plan price for a like-for-like cost comparison.

Does InMotion VPS include cPanel?
No: cPanel is listed as an optional control panel on the self-managed plans, not as a standard included feature. The same listing makes Control Web Panel optional. If you choose either, budget for its license separately and verify the current price and billing interval during checkout.
That distinction matters because control-panel costs can materially alter the apparent monthly value. Tom’s Hardware’s February 2025 checkout showed cPanel at $306 per year and Control Web Panel at $60 per year. The review also reported Backup Manager at $35.88 per year. Those test-checkout amounts may have changed, so use them as evidence that extras can add cost, not as today’s confirmed prices.
Root access means a capable customer can install and configure software without relying on a bundled panel, but that option presumes command-line and server-administration skills. A panel can simplify some administration tasks, yet it does not make a self-managed plan managed: the customer still owns the plan’s configuration and maintenance responsibilities.

How does InMotion VPS performance compare?
The available independent comparison is Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 review. It called InMotion’s tested VPS noticeably slower than many competitors and reported an overall WordPress Benchmark score of 6.3, compared with 8.4 for Liquid Web in the cited comparison. Those are results from that review’s test, not a universal score for all InMotion servers or a guarantee that two customers’ sites will behave identically.
InMotion’s high listed vCPU and RAM allocations do not cancel out that finding. Plan specifications describe allocated resources; the review supplies a separate observed result under its test conditions. If your use case is a business-critical WordPress site, evaluate whether independent results and your own workload requirements justify choosing it over a provider with better evidence for your performance needs. The supplied information does not establish a broader multi-location or long-duration performance comparison.

Is InMotion VPS good for WordPress?
It may be workable for a WordPress site when you have the skills to configure and maintain the server, but the evidence here does not support calling it a performance-first WordPress choice. Tom’s Hardware’s review reported the 6.3 WordPress Benchmark score and described the tested VPS as slower than many competitors. It also reported an SSL troubleshooting episode in which the response took 11 days and the site still could not load securely over HTTPS.
That review is a useful warning rather than a forecast for every support interaction. Still, a WordPress owner who cannot diagnose operating-system, web-server, certificate, or application problems should weigh managed service or another hosting approach. On self-managed VPS, a site issue may require server-level work that falls outside InMotion’s stated hardware, network, and data-center support scope.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What support, backup, and uptime protections are listed?
The self-managed plans list 24/7 support for hardware, network, and data-center matters, along with always-on DDoS protection, on-demand snapshots, and a 99.99% uptime guarantee. These features address different risks: infrastructure support and DDoS protection do not replace application maintenance, while snapshots offer a recovery point but do not themselves establish a complete backup strategy.
Plan the recovery process before putting important data on the server. Establish what data needs saving, how often it changes, and how you would restore the operating system, database, and application if a deployment or security incident goes wrong. InMotion’s plan page lists on-demand snapshots, but the supplied details do not establish snapshot retention, frequency limits, or whether a snapshot alone meets any particular recovery requirement. Verify those terms and the uptime guarantee’s conditions before relying on them.
Likewise, the 99.99% figure is a stated guarantee, not proof that a specific application will be available at that level. The guarantee’s definitions, exclusions, and remedy are matters to check in the current service terms. Keep application monitoring and an independent recovery plan in view if downtime has a direct business cost.

Who should buy InMotion VPS?
It is a better fit if you:
- Can configure and secure a Linux server, apply patches, and troubleshoot software without routine provider intervention.
- Need root/SSH access and want to choose among AlmaLinux, Debian, or Ubuntu.
- Want the listed CPU, memory, storage, IP, and bandwidth allocations, and have checked that the renewal price fits your budget.
- Can treat optional control-panel, backup, and other software charges as separate line items.
Look elsewhere or consider managed hosting if you:
- Need the provider to take responsibility for operating-system patching, cPanel/WHM maintenance, migrations, and broader server troubleshooting.
- Cannot afford to diagnose a server problem or wait through an uncertain support timeline.
- Are choosing mainly for independently demonstrated performance, especially for a revenue-critical WordPress site.
- Are evaluating price only from the introductory offer rather than the recurring renewal and required extras.
Before purchase, confirm the selected tier’s current price and term, renewal rate, included bandwidth policy, data-center location, optional licenses, and the scope of managed or self-managed support. InMotion lists global data centers, but the supplied details do not identify a specific location or show a location-by-location performance result. Choose a location based on your audience and application needs after confirming what is available for the plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch from self-managed to managed VPS later?
The available plan information distinguishes the services but does not establish whether an existing account can be converted in place, what it would cost, or whether migration would be required. Ask InMotion to confirm the conversion path and any service or migration charges before purchasing if you expect to need management later.
Does InMotion VPS come with a free SSL certificate?
The plan details provided do not establish whether a certificate is included. Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 review reported trouble getting SSL to work on its tested VPS site, which is a specific test experience rather than proof that certificates cannot be used; confirm certificate options and setup responsibility for the plan you select.
Can I choose where my InMotion VPS server is hosted?
The self-managed plan listing refers to global data centers, but the available details do not enumerate locations or explain location selection during checkout. Check the locations currently offered for the exact VPS tier before ordering, particularly if geography is important for your audience or operations.
