Dia’s published policies describe a browser that collects account, device, usage, and content data—including pages visited and Dia Assistant prompts and responses. Some AI features send prompts and relevant page content to an outside model provider. Dia says those providers are contractually restricted from retaining that information or using it to train their models, but Dia may use content to improve its own product unless you opt out. Sensitive-site exclusion is only a best-effort measure, and Dia says it is not HIPAA-compliant. These are the company’s published statements, not the result of an independent audit of Dia’s practices.

Is Dia browser private and safe to use?

Dia may be reasonable for ordinary browsing if you understand its data practices and adjust its settings, but its published policy does not describe a browser that keeps all browsing content on your device. The key distinction is between browsing normally and asking an AI feature to use page content: the latter can send relevant content to Dia and an outside model provider.

“Private” and “safe” are not single yes-or-no properties. Privacy depends on what data a service collects, where it goes, how it is used and retained, and what control you have. Safety also includes security updates and the risks of relying on AI-generated answers or actions. Dia’s official Privacy Policy and Security FAQ explain the company’s stated practices; they do not independently prove that those practices work as described. The policy is effective April 9, 2026. Dia Privacy Policy

  • For routine browsing: the available policy identifies pages visited as content data, so do not assume your browsing activity is categorically excluded from collection.
  • For AI use: a request that includes a page, or a proactive feature that uses pages you viewed, can send the prompt and relevant page content to an outside provider.
  • For sensitive information: Dia says sensitive-site exclusion is best effort, not guaranteed. It explicitly says it is not HIPAA-compliant and does not offer a Business Associate Agreement.
  • For security: Dia publishes SOC 2 Type II and Chromium-update claims, but the materials cited here do not include an independent assessment of its report or update performance.

Those points support a practical conclusion: avoid putting regulated or highly sensitive information into Dia, especially through AI features, and treat its privacy and security statements as vendor claims rather than independent verification.

What data does Dia collect?

Dia’s Privacy Policy lists several categories of personal data. Its definition of content data matters most to people concerned about browsing privacy: it can include pages visited using Dia as well as queries submitted to and responses created by Dia Assistant. Dia Privacy Policy

Data category Examples Dia lists Why it matters
Account and contact Email and login credentials These identify or enable access to an account.
Payment Payment data for paid features Relevant if you purchase a paid feature or subscription.
Content Pages visited in Dia; Assistant queries and responses May reveal interests, work, or information on pages you view or submit to AI.
Skills and user-provided information Skills data, feedback, and other information users provide Information you add or submit may become part of the data Dia processes.
Usage, device, and network Feature-usage data, IP address, and device data Can describe how the service is used and the device or network involved.

Dia says it processes this data to provide the browser and related services. It also lists account and payment support, personalization, fraud protection, and product improvement among its purposes. The policy says data may be disclosed to service providers, people or organizations a user authorizes, and government or other parties for stated legal, safety, or rights-enforcement reasons.

If Sync is enabled, Dia says User Content is sent off-device to its servers and is end-to-end encrypted, not processed or stored there in readable form. This describes Dia’s handling of synced User Content; it should not be generalized into a claim that every kind of data, or every AI request, remains exclusively on your device.

Dia says it is hosted and operated in the United States and that data may be transferred to the United States and possibly other countries. If an organization connects its domain to Dia through an identity provider, administrators may access account and contact information such as a user’s name and email. The policy says those organization administrators cannot access content data at this time.

When do Dia’s AI features send page content to another company?

According to Dia’s Security FAQ, a request that includes a page can send the prompt and relevant page content to a third-party model provider. A proactive feature such as Morning Brief can also use pages viewed. This is a transmission of content beyond the browser and Dia; it is not merely a question of whether you typed a prompt yourself. Dia Security FAQ

Dia names Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google as examples of providers. It says these providers are contractually restricted from retaining the information or using it to train their models. That is Dia’s description of its contracts, not independent confirmation of what those contracts require or how they are enforced.

There are two separate data-use questions to keep apart:

  • Third-party model training: Dia says its providers are contractually prohibited from retaining the information or training their models on it.
  • Dia product improvement: Dia says it may use some content data to improve Dia unless you opt out in Settings. It also says it trains small models that run on-device for tasks such as selecting an AI provider.

Turning off content sharing for Dia’s improvement use should not be assumed to prevent a particular AI request from being sent to an outside provider when the feature needs page content. These are distinct mechanisms described by Dia, so check the feature and setting involved before sharing sensitive material.

Is Dia safe to use on banking, healthcare, or other sensitive sites?

Do not treat Dia’s sensitive-site exclusion as a guarantee. Dia says it makes a best-effort attempt to exclude sensitive sites from passive features such as memory and from content used to improve Dia, but it explicitly warns that the exclusion is not guaranteed and does not apply when you deliberately include a site in a request. Dia Security FAQ

That means simply visiting a sensitive page and deliberately asking an AI feature to analyze it are not the same scenario—but neither should be treated as assurance that no data can be exposed. If you submit a page or ask a feature to use it, relevant page content may be sent to a model provider. A banking, medical, legal, or workplace page can contain account details, health information, personal identifiers, or confidential material even if you do not copy those details into the prompt yourself.

Dia’s position on regulated health information is explicit: “Dia is not HIPAA-compliant and The Browser company does not offer a Business Associate Agreement (BAA).” Dia advises against using it for work involving protected health information (PHI) or other information protected by law. For organizations, Dia says mobile device management (MDM) controls can disable AI features on specific sites. An organization should confirm that those controls match its own compliance requirements rather than relying on a browser’s best-effort site classification.

For personal use, avoid using AI on a page containing information you would not willingly send to an outside service. For work, follow your organization’s approved-browser and data-handling rules; a personal setting or a site-exclusion feature is not a substitute for an approved compliance arrangement.

How can you reduce the amount of data Dia uses?

You can reduce some data sharing by changing settings and by being selective about AI, but the available controls should not be mistaken for a blanket promise that browsing content is never collected. Dia identifies Settings as the place to opt out of content use for its product improvement and says organizations can disable that sharing for everyone. Dia Security FAQ

  1. Review content-sharing controls. In Dia, open Settings and look for the control to turn off content sharing. Dia says this prevents the relevant content use for improving Dia; confirm the current wording and scope in the app.
  2. Do not include sensitive pages in AI requests. If a prompt or proactive feature uses page content, assume relevant content may be transmitted to a third-party model provider as Dia describes.
  3. Review before approving actions. Dia advises users to specify what they want the assistant to do and review actions before approving them.
  4. Be careful with untrusted material. Dia advises caution with unfamiliar or untrusted content and recommends scrutinizing responses before sharing them or acting on them.
  5. For managed devices, ask about MDM controls. Dia says organizations can use MDM to disable AI features on specific sites. Ask the administrator which sites and features are covered.

Dia also says ads are blocked by default and that personal data is not for sale or collected to build ad profiles. These are Dia’s stated practices, not an independent assessment of all tracking or data flows. The company’s security page describes its data-sale and ad-blocking statements. How long does Dia keep data, and what happens when you delete it?

Dia describes different deletion timelines for different data and circumstances. Clearing local chats, files, or history removes those items from the device; that local action is not the same as deleting an account or erasing every data category held by the company. Dia Security FAQ

Action or data Dia’s stated handling Important qualification
Clear local chats, files, or history Removed from the device This is a local clearing action, not a universal deletion guarantee for server-side data.
Content shared with Dia Deleted from Dia’s servers after 30 days This is the Security FAQ’s stated period for content shared with Dia.
Delete a Dia account Associated data deleted within 30 days Previously submitted feedback or content is retained separately and no longer linked to the account; analytics is retained but no longer linked to the profile. Synced data is deleted as part of account deletion.
Personal data generally Retained as long as needed for service, business, or commercial purposes The Privacy Policy allows longer retention for legal obligations, disputes, fee collection, or other legal requirements; examples include keeping profile data while an account exists and payment data as needed to process a purchase or subscription.

The 30-day statements are not a promise that every trace disappears immediately or that every category follows the same schedule. To delete an account, Dia says to use Settings. For other privacy requests, the policy says to contact Dia. Dia Privacy Policy

What security measures does Dia report?

Dia says it completed a SOC 2 Type II examination covering security, confidentiality, and privacy for calendar year 2025. Its Security FAQ also says the browser releases weekly with the latest stable Chromium version Google has shipped to users, and critical security fixes are published to production within 48 hours of Google’s release. These are company-published statements; the materials cited here do not include the SOC report or independent verification of update timing. Dia Security FAQ

Those statements are relevant, but they answer different questions. A SOC 2 Type II examination concerns specified controls over a period; it does not establish that no data is collected or that all possible risks are eliminated. A stated Chromium cadence describes Dia’s intended update practice; it is not a guarantee that a particular device has installed a fix at a particular moment. Keep Dia updated and use the browser’s current release rather than assuming a claim about production updates means your installation is already patched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Dia without signing in?

The policy lists account and contact information as data Dia collects, but the materials cited here do not establish which browser functions are available without an account. Check Dia’s current sign-in screen and feature requirements rather than assuming browsing or Sync works anonymously.

Can my employer see what I browse in Dia?

Dia says administrators of an organization connected through an identity provider may access account/contact data such as name and email, but cannot access content data at this time. Your employer may still have separate device-management, network, or workplace-monitoring policies outside that statement.

How do I make a privacy request or delete my account?

Dia says account deletion is available in Settings and that other privacy requests can be submitted by contacting Dia. The Privacy Policy also describes additional rights for certain U.S. state residents and people in the EU, UK, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Iceland; eligibility depends on residency and applicable conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Dia’s SOC 2 examination mean it is safe for confidential work?

Not by itself. Dia says its examination covered security, confidentiality, and privacy during calendar year 2025, but that does not make the browser HIPAA-compliant or establish that it is approved for your organization’s confidential workflows.
