For most people buying a device now, an iPhone is the better choice for listening to music: it is part of Apple’s current product lineup, supports Apple Music and downloaded music, and also handles everyday communication and apps. A used seventh-generation iPod touch makes more sense if you specifically want music on a separate, phone-free device and are comfortable with discontinued hardware, older software and uncertain battery condition.
Is an iPod better than an iPhone for music?
It depends on what you want the music device to do. An iPhone is the more practical all-purpose choice; an iPod touch is the more deliberate choice for separating listening from the phone you use for messages, social media and other interruptions.

Apple discontinued its final model, the iPod touch, in May 2022, selling it only while supplies lasted. So the meaningful comparison in 2026 is generally a current iPhone versus a used or refurbished seventh-generation iPod touch—not two devices you can both buy new from Apple.
Apple now presents iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and HomePod as products that carry forward the iPod music experience. That is a useful clue to the buying decision: choose an iPhone if you want a supported, current Apple device that can do more than play music; consider an iPod touch if having a separate player is itself the point.

What are the main differences between an iPod touch and an iPhone?
The biggest differences are availability, cellular communication, distraction, and the condition of the hardware. Both can play music, but the iPod touch is a discontinued Wi-Fi device, while an iPhone combines music with phone service and a broader set of everyday uses.
| Factor | Seventh-generation iPod touch | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Buying one now | Discontinued in May 2022; look to the used or refurbished market. Apple sold remaining stock only while supplies lasted. | Part of Apple’s current product lineup; the model, price and availability depend on what is offered at the time and in your region. |
| Streaming | Later iPod touch models can stream Apple Music when they have a suitable Wi-Fi connection. It has no cellular connection for streaming away from Wi-Fi. | Can stream over Wi-Fi or, with an active cellular connection and service, over mobile data. |
| Offline listening | Supports local music playback; downloaded music can also be useful when a connection is unavailable. | Supports local playback and downloaded music as well as streaming. |
| Battery figure in the cited specification | Apple rates the seventh-generation iPod touch for up to 40 hours of music playback. A used device’s actual battery life depends on its present battery condition. | No single comparable figure is given here: battery performance varies by iPhone model and use. |
| Headphone connections | Has both a Lightning connector and a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack. | Connector and headphone options depend on the specific iPhone model and accessories. |
| Storage and software age | The final model dates to 2019. MacRumors reports an A10 Fusion chip, a 4-inch display and storage configurations up to 256GB. It is older hardware, and software support should be checked for the exact device and apps you need. | Current models and their specifications change over time. Check the particular model’s storage, connector and software-support details before buying. |
| Communication and distraction | A separate music device without cellular phone service; it can reduce the temptation to reach for a phone, though it is still a connected device when using Wi-Fi. | One device for music, calls, messages, navigation and apps; convenient, but those same features can interrupt listening. |
| Total cost | There is no current Apple retail price. Consider the used-device price plus any needed headphones, Lightning accessories and the possibility of battery service or replacement. | Compare the price of the particular current iPhone with any headphones or adapters you need. The iPhone may replace a separate player, but its cost is not directly comparable to a used iPod. |
When should you choose an iPhone for music?
Choose an iPhone if you want one current device for streaming, downloads, communication and other apps. It is also the simpler route if you plan to buy new through Apple’s current product ecosystem rather than source discontinued hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt suits listeners who want streaming and one-device convenience
An iPhone can keep music alongside the tools many people already carry: calls, messages, navigation and apps. You do not need to maintain a second device just for listening. For Apple Music subscribers, the iPhone is the straightforward choice when streaming and downloads matter more than keeping music away from the phone.
Apple described Apple Music in its 2022 iPod announcement as offering “industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio.” That is Apple’s own characterization, attributed to Greg Joswiak, then the company’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing—not an independent comparative test of iPhone and iPod sound. The device choice should therefore turn on your use, not on treating that statement as proof that one of these devices sounds better.
It makes sense if you want to buy new
The iPod touch is discontinued, so a listing that describes one as new does not mean Apple currently sells it as a current product. A current iPhone is the sensible option if buying new from Apple, current hardware and a single-device setup are priorities. Model-specific pricing, connector details and software-support status should be checked for the iPhone you are considering.
It is less suitable if you want a hard boundary around phone use
An iPhone can play music without opening other apps, but the device still puts communication and entertainment in the same place. Focus settings and notification controls may help, but they do not make it a physically separate player. If the goal is to leave the phone behind during a run, commute or study session, an iPod touch has a clearer advantage—provided Wi-Fi streaming is not required while away from a network.

When is a used iPod touch the better choice?
A used seventh-generation iPod touch is worth considering when you value a separate music device more than current hardware. Its built-in headphone jack, stated music-playback rating and ability to play local music are practical reasons to choose it, but they do not remove the risks that come with buying a discontinued device.

You want to reduce phone distractions
Keeping music on a separate device makes it easier to leave your phone in a bag, another room or at home. Current reporting from the Associated Press in 2026 describes renewed interest in used iPods for distraction-free listening. That is a use-case advantage, not a guarantee that an iPod touch is entirely distraction-free: it can still connect to Wi-Fi and run apps.
You need a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack
The seventh-generation iPod touch has a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack as well as Lightning. That can be convenient if you already own wired headphones with a 3.5 mm plug and do not want to add a separate adapter for that connection. Check the exact listing and test the jack before buying used; the connector is useful only if the device’s hardware is in working condition.
You are comfortable with older hardware and uncertain battery health
The final iPod touch model was released in 2019, according to MacRumors. Its age matters more in the secondhand market than the original specification: a used unit’s battery may no longer perform as it did when new, and an app or service you care about may not support its software. Before purchasing, confirm the exact generation, storage, physical condition and return terms with the seller, and check the software requirements for your intended apps.
Can you still use an iPod touch for Apple Music?
Later iPod touch models can stream Apple Music, and the seventh-generation model can also play locally stored music. Streaming requires a Wi-Fi connection; unlike an iPhone with cellular service, the iPod touch cannot rely on a mobile network when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
For listening away from Wi-Fi, plan around music already stored on the device or downloaded for offline listening. Apple’s technical specifications for the seventh-generation iPod touch list common supported audio formats including AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital and Audible. Actual use of a streaming service also depends on the device’s software and the service continuing to support it, so check those requirements before buying an older unit specifically for Apple Music.
Apple said in 2022 that Apple Music had more than 90 million songs and over 30,000 playlists. Those are historical figures from Apple, not a current catalog count; the service’s present selection and availability can change by date and region.
How should you compare the real cost?
There is no current Apple retail price for an iPod touch, and secondhand listings vary. Compare the complete setup you would actually use rather than the device price alone.

- For a used iPod touch: include the seller’s price, the condition and return policy, any battery work that may be needed, and compatible headphones or Lightning accessories.
- For an iPhone: compare the cost of the particular model with any headphones or connector accessories it requires. If you already need a phone, its music use may not require buying a separate player.
- For either device: account for your music plan or purchases separately. The device itself does not establish the current price or availability of a music service.
Because iPhone models and used iPod listings differ, there is no single fair price comparison without a specific model, condition, storage size and region. Check current local listings and the exact device specifications before deciding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check before buying a used iPod touch?
Since the iPod touch is discontinued, condition and compatibility deserve more attention than a typical current-device purchase. A low listing price is not enough if the battery, connector or required apps do not work for your needs.
- Confirm it is the seventh-generation model. Ask the seller to identify the generation and storage capacity rather than relying only on a generic “iPod touch” listing title.
- Ask about battery behavior. Apple’s “up to 40 hours” is a specification rating, not a promise for a used device. Ask how the battery performs now and whether the seller offers returns if it falls short of the description.
- Test both audio connections. If possible, try the 3.5 mm headphone jack and Lightning connection with compatible accessories. Check that playback is clear and that the cable or plug remains connected reliably.
- Check software and app requirements. Confirm that the installed software and the apps or music services you plan to use are compatible with the exact device. Older hardware can be a poor fit if a particular app is essential.
- Review condition and seller terms. Look for a clear description of physical damage, included accessories and the return window. A refurbished label alone does not specify battery health or what inspection was performed.
Which device is best for music without distractions?
If “without distractions” means putting a physical boundary between music and your phone, choose a used iPod touch if you can find one in acceptable condition. If you mainly want to listen with fewer interruptions but still need one device, an iPhone is more convenient; reducing notifications is a settings decision rather than a reason to buy a discontinued player.
Use this quick decision rule:
- Choose an iPhone for a current device, Apple Music streaming and downloads, cellular access, and music alongside everyday apps.
- Choose a used seventh-generation iPod touch for a dedicated player, a built-in 3.5 mm jack, local playback and a device you can leave separate from your phone—if you accept older software and used-device condition.
- Choose neither without checking further if you need a specific app to work, require a particular connector, or depend on a specific battery runtime. Confirm the exact model and condition first.
For most new purchases in 2026, the iPhone is the better music device because it is current and versatile. The used iPod touch remains a narrower but reasonable option for listeners who knowingly prioritize separation over newer hardware.
