iPhone Spatial Audio Head Tracking Not Working? How to Fix It

If Spatial Audio head tracking is not working on your iPhone, first confirm that your AirPods are connected and supported, then set Spatial Audio to Head Tracked while the affected app is playing supported content. The setting is saved per app, so it can work in one app and appear broken in another. Also check the AirPods accessibility setting Follow iPhone; personalization and current firmware are later checks, not prerequisites for switching on basic head tracking.

This guide separates a missing control, an option that is available but sounds wrong, and a problem limited to one app. That distinction matters: head tracking depends on the AirPods model, the iPhone connection, the selected mode, the app, the individual song or video, and—in apps with custom spatial audio—the developer’s implementation.

What does iPhone Spatial Audio head tracking require?

Head tracking adjusts the perceived position of supported spatial audio as you move your head. For example, a compatible movie soundtrack can appear to remain anchored to the iPhone while you turn, instead of moving with your head like ordinary stereo audio. It is not a universal effect applied to every sound on the iPhone: the AirPods, connection, selected mode, app, and content all need to support the experience.

Apple’s current AirPods guide lists AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max as models that can use Spatial Audio and head tracking with supported shows, movies, songs, games, and FaceTime. Check Apple’s AirPods Spatial Audio and head-tracking guide for the compatibility information applicable to your device. Having a compatible model does not guarantee that every app or item of content supports the feature.

The practical requirements are therefore:

  • A supported AirPods model: AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max.
  • A connection to the iPhone you are using, with the AirPods shown as the active audio output.
  • The AirPods worn correctly. For earbuds, wear both connected earbuds; for a headset, wear the connected headset.
  • A supported app and supported song, show, movie, game, or FaceTime experience.
  • The per-app Spatial Audio mode set to Head Tracked.

Personalized Spatial Audio is separate. You can select Head Tracked without creating a personalized profile; personalization is an optional way to tune rendering, not a switch that unlocks basic head tracking.

How do I turn on Head Tracked?

Use Control Center while your AirPods are connected and worn. Choose the mode from the volume control while the app you want to troubleshoot is in use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect your compatible AirPods to the iPhone and wear them. Confirm the AirPods appear as the active audio device.
  2. Open Control Center.
  3. Touch and hold the volume control until the audio options appear.
  4. Tap Spatial Audio, then select Head Tracked.
  5. Play supported content in the app you want to use and move your head gently to check whether the sound perspective responds.

There are three choices. Head Tracked uses Spatial Audio with head tracking; Fixed keeps Spatial Audio on without head tracking; Off turns Spatial Audio off. Apple’s iPhone guide to controlling Spatial Audio documents the same Control Center choices. If the menu does not offer the expected choice, work through the checks below rather than assuming a sensor has failed.

What each mode tells you

Head Tracked is the mode to test when you expect the soundstage to respond to head movement. Fixed is a useful diagnostic comparison: Spatial Audio remains enabled, but the perspective does not follow your head. If Fixed sounds spatial while Head Tracked does not change as you turn, the basic rendering is available and the remaining checks should focus on the app, accessibility setting, connection, and firmware. Off disables the Spatial Audio effect, so it cannot demonstrate whether tracking works.

The control is not a one-time global switch. Apple saves the selected mode automatically for each app. Selecting Head Tracked while Apple Music is open does not necessarily select it for a separate video player, game, or FaceTime. Always make the selection with the affected app active.

Why does head tracking work in one app but not another?

Spatial Audio availability depends on the app and the particular content, and iPhone saves the selected Spatial Audio mode separately for each app. A working experience in one app therefore does not prove that another app or video supports head tracking—or that both apps have the same saved mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the affected app’s saved mode

Open the app where the problem occurs, start the relevant song, show, movie, game, or FaceTime call, then repeat the Control Center steps and choose Head Tracked. Do this even if you already selected that mode in another app. Apple documents that the choice is saved automatically per app in its AirPods guide.

Use a known supported item as a comparison

Test a supported type of content, such as a song, movie, show, game, or FaceTime, rather than relying on an app’s presence alone. If head tracking works with a supported item elsewhere but not with one specific app or item, that points toward app or content support, not necessarily an iPhone or AirPods fault. Apple does not claim Spatial Audio works in every app or for all content.

  • EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*

For a clean comparison, use the same iPhone and AirPods without changing hardware, select Head Tracked separately in each app, and test a short passage with clear left-right movement or a centered voice. Keep your head movement gentle and repeat it after playback has started. A result that changes when you switch to another supported item is evidence of a content or app limitation rather than a universal AirPods problem.

When an app’s implementation matters

For custom spatial audio, app developers can implement head-pose behavior using Apple’s relevant APIs. Apple’s developer documentation explains how an app can personalize spatial audio and respond to listener orientation: Personalizing Spatial Audio in your app. Apple also documents a system spatial-audio effect for App Store games in iOS 18. These app-level choices can affect the result independently of whether the AirPods and iPhone are compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This explains why two apps can behave differently even when they are played on the same phone. An app may not support Spatial Audio at all, may support only certain titles, or may use its own spatial-audio implementation. In that situation, repeatedly changing iPhone settings cannot add support that the app or content does not provide.

Could Follow iPhone be changing the behavior?

Yes. The Follow iPhone accessibility control affects how Spatial Audio is oriented. Check it if the sound seems anchored to the phone or behaves differently from the head-following experience you expect.

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then AirPods.
  3. Select the connected AirPods.
  4. Review Follow iPhone and set it as intended for your use.

Apple describes this option as making Spatial Audio sound as though it comes from the iPhone, rather than simply following head movement. The exact option applies to the selected AirPods; inspect the device shown on that screen. See Apple’s guide to AirPods accessibility settings for the control’s behavior.

A common pitfall is checking this setting for a different pair of AirPods. If more than one pair has been used with the iPhone, select the pair currently connected before changing the option. After changing it, return to the affected app, reselect Head Tracked in Control Center, and test again.

Do I need Personalized Spatial Audio?

No. The Head Tracked mode can be used without a personalized profile. Consider creating or recreating one if head tracking is enabled but the spatial rendering sounds wrong or does not seem to fit you.

Apple requires an iPhone with iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera to create Personalized Spatial Audio. With AirPods connected, open Settings, tap the AirPods device name, choose Audio & Routing > Personalized Spatial Audio > Personalize Spatial Audio, then complete the on-screen front and ear scans. Apple’s instructions are in Set up Personalized Spatial Audio. If the camera or iOS requirement is not met, skip this step; it is not a prerequisite for selecting Head Tracked.

When recreating the profile helps

Recreate the profile when Head Tracked is present and the effect is clearly enabled but the soundstage feels incorrectly shaped or poorly positioned. Follow the front scan and both ear scans carefully, keep your face and ears visible as instructed, and finish the entire setup before testing. The profile changes rendering; it does not make an unsupported app or unsupported item of content compatible.

If the Personalize Spatial Audio option is missing, verify the two documented requirements first: iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera. Do not interpret the missing personalization control as proof that basic head tracking is unavailable. The two features have different requirements.

What are the privacy implications of the scan?

Apple says the TrueDepth camera creates a representation of the listener’s ear and head shape. Its privacy notice states: “Camera data used to develop your profile is processed entirely on device and images are not stored.” Apple also says the profile may sync through iCloud with end-to-end encryption. Read the Personalized Spatial Audio & Privacy notice before creating a profile if you want Apple’s full explanation of the data handling.

The distinction is important: the scan is optional, while the Head Tracked mode itself does not require you to create a personalized profile. If you do create one, Apple’s stated handling concerns the camera data used to develop the profile and the encrypted syncing of the resulting profile. You can decide whether the potential rendering adjustment is worth completing the scan for your use.

How do I update AirPods firmware?

Apple recommends updating iOS and following its automatic AirPods firmware update process before escalating a persistent problem. AirPods firmware is not updated by selecting an update button in Settings; prepare the devices and allow time for the update to install.

  1. Update the iPhone to the latest iOS version available for it.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
  3. Put the AirPods in their charging case and connect the case to power.
  4. Close the case lid and keep the AirPods within Bluetooth range of the iPhone for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Reconnect the AirPods, then check the firmware version in Settings.

If the firmware still does not update, Apple advises resetting the AirPods and retrying. Follow Apple’s model-specific instructions at About firmware updates for AirPods; the reset procedure can differ by model. Recheck the version after the update process rather than assuming that leaving the case nearby completed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firmware-update pitfalls

Do not test only while the case is closed and the AirPods are not connected to the phone; reconnect them after the waiting period. Keep the case close enough for Bluetooth communication, leave it charging for the full 30 minutes, and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth remain enabled. Updating iOS alone does not prove that the AirPods firmware has changed. If the version remains unchanged, use Apple’s reset instructions for your exact model and repeat the preparation sequence.

What should I check before contacting support?

Use this sequence to separate a setup issue from an app-specific limitation. Stop when you find a check that resolves the problem.

  1. Confirm the model: Verify the AirPods are AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, the models Apple lists for Spatial Audio and head tracking.
  2. Confirm the connection: Wear both earbuds or the connected headset and make sure the iPhone shows that AirPods pair as the active audio device.
  3. Set the mode in context: Start content in the affected app, open Control Center, touch and hold volume, tap Spatial Audio, and choose Head Tracked—not Fixed or Off.
  4. Confirm the content: Test a supported song, movie, show, game, or FaceTime experience. Do not use an unsupported clip as the only test.
  5. Check accessibility: Review Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > your AirPods, including Follow iPhone.
  6. Repeat per app: Make the Head Tracked selection again inside every app that behaves differently, because the setting is saved per app.
  7. Compare modes: Try Fixed briefly. If Fixed works but Head Tracked does not, the audio path is active and the remaining problem is specifically tracking, orientation, or app behavior.
  8. Check personalization only if needed: If the mode is available but rendering sounds wrong, recreate the profile if your iPhone meets the iOS 16 and TrueDepth requirements.
  9. Perform software maintenance: Update iOS and allow the AirPods firmware update process to run for at least 30 minutes under Apple’s conditions.

If Head Tracked remains unavailable across supported apps and content after these checks, contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider. A problem limited to one app or item is more consistent with app or content support than a failure that occurs across supported experiences.

How can I tell whether the problem is global or app-specific?

Write down the result of the same test in two or more supported apps. A global problem follows the AirPods across those apps: Head Tracked is missing, unavailable, or ineffective everywhere. An app-specific problem appears only in one app or one title, while another supported experience responds normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also distinguish an unavailable control from an ineffective effect. If Spatial Audio itself is unavailable, begin with model, connection, app, and content support. If Head Tracked can be selected but movement does not alter the perspective, inspect Follow iPhone, test Fixed for comparison, check the app’s implementation, and complete the firmware steps. If the spatial image is present but poorly shaped, personalization is the relevant optional check.

Which AirPods should I use for this feature?

Apple’s compatibility list includes AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. The relevant comparison is not simply price or noise cancellation; verify the exact generation and that it appears in Apple’s current compatibility guidance. AirPods Pro are a natural fit when you specifically want Apple’s documented Spatial Audio, head-tracking, and Personalized Spatial Audio support, but any purchase should be checked against the exact model listing and current program terms.

Changing from one compatible model to another is not the first troubleshooting step. First determine whether the issue follows the same AirPods across supported apps. Replacing hardware cannot correct an app that does not provide Spatial Audio or a per-app mode that is still set to Off.

Frequently overlooked details

  • The iPhone setting is not universal: A successful selection in one app does not carry over automatically to another.
  • Fixed is not a failure: It deliberately disables head movement while retaining Spatial Audio.
  • Personalization is optional: The TrueDepth and iOS 16 requirements apply to creating the profile, not to choosing Head Tracked.
  • Supported hardware is not sufficient: Apple limits availability by app and content.
  • Firmware is automatic: There is no ordinary manual update button; use the charging-case, power, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 30-minute procedure.
  • Developer behavior can vary: Apps using custom spatial audio can produce different results from Apple’s own experiences, and iOS 18 provides a system spatial-audio effect for App Store games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the TrueDepth scan save photos of my ears?

Apple says the camera images used to develop the profile are processed on the device and are not stored. The resulting profile may sync through iCloud with end-to-end encryption; Apple’s privacy notice describes the handling in more detail.

Can I use Personalized Spatial Audio without an iPhone camera?

Apple specifies a TrueDepth camera and iOS 16 or later for creating the personalized profile. That requirement is for personalization, not for turning on the basic Head Tracked mode.

Can an app developer affect how head tracking sounds?

Yes. Apple’s developer documentation describes APIs that let apps implement spatial audio using listener head-pose information, so the app’s own implementation can influence the experience even on compatible hardware.

Why does Fixed work when Head Tracked does not?

Fixed keeps Spatial Audio enabled but intentionally removes head tracking. If Fixed works, the AirPods and audio path are active; check Follow iPhone, the affected app’s support, per-app mode, and firmware for the tracking-specific problem.

Why is Head Tracked missing from Control Center?

Check that a compatible AirPods model is connected and worn, then test supported content. If the option is still unavailable, repeat the check in the affected app because Spatial Audio availability depends on the app and content.

Do I have to scan my ears to turn on head tracking?

No. Personalized Spatial Audio is optional. Basic Head Tracked mode does not require a personalized profile; the scan is an optional rendering adjustment that requires iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera.

Why does Spatial Audio work in Apple Music but not my video app?

The mode is saved per app, and Apple says Spatial Audio is unavailable for some apps or content. Select Head Tracked while the video app is active and test a supported title. If another app works, the limitation may be app or content support.

How long should I wait for an AirPods firmware update?

Apple’s documented preparation is to connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, keep Bluetooth on, place AirPods in the charging case, connect the case to power, close the lid, and leave it within range for at least 30 minutes. Reconnect and check the version afterward.

When should I contact Apple Support?

Escalate after confirming a supported model and connection, selecting Head Tracked in each affected app, testing supported content, checking Follow iPhone, considering personalization, and completing iOS and firmware maintenance. A failure across supported apps and content warrants support or an authorized service provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most iPhone head-tracking problems, start with the supported AirPods connection and the Control Center mode, then repeat the selection in the affected app. Check Follow iPhone, test known supported content, treat Personalized Spatial Audio as optional, and complete Apple’s iOS and firmware-update procedure before seeking service. If the feature works elsewhere, investigate the app or content before replacing hardware.
