To stop contact-sharing prompts when iPhones are brought together, go to Settings > General > AirDrop and turn off Bring Devices Together. To stop tasks or app activity from continuing between your iPhone and another Apple device, go to Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity and turn off Handoff. These are separate controls; turn off AirDrop receiving separately only if you also want to block incoming files.
The right switch depends on what is happening: a NameDrop contact prompt, a Handoff suggestion, or a request to receive an AirDrop file. The features can seem related because they involve nearby or connected Apple devices, but each has its own setting. You do not need to turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth globally to target one of these behaviors.

Which iPhone setting should I turn off?
Choose the setting that matches what you see. NameDrop and Handoff are different features, and neither setting is a universal switch for every kind of AirDrop activity. Start with the symptom rather than switching off several features at once. That way, you can stop the behavior you do not want while leaving unrelated sharing and Continuity features unchanged.
| What you see | Setting to change | What it affects | Check another device? |
|---|---|---|---|
| A contact-sharing prompt when devices are brought close | Bring Devices Together under Settings > General > AirDrop | NameDrop and other bring-together interactions | Turn it off on any iPhone where you want to prevent that behavior. |
| An app or task suggestion for another Apple device | Handoff under Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity | Continuing a task across supported Apple devices | Review the Handoff setting on the companion device too if suggestions continue. |
| An incoming request to receive a file | AirDrop receiving options | Whether the iPhone can receive AirDropped items | Change the receiving option on each device where you want to limit file reception. |
In short, Bring Devices Together controls the proximity interaction, Handoff controls task continuation, and AirDrop receiving controls whether the iPhone can accept incoming AirDropped items. These controls are reversible: return to the same settings area to turn a feature back on or choose a different receiving option.

How do I stop my iPhone from sharing when I put it near another iPhone?
Turn off Bring Devices Together. This is the targeted setting for NameDrop and other features triggered by bringing compatible devices close; it does not, by itself, turn off ordinary AirDrop file receiving.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then AirDrop.
- Turn off Bring Devices Together.
Apple says NameDrop is on by default. With it enabled, bringing an iPhone close to another iPhone or compatible Apple Watch can start a contact-sharing interaction. NameDrop requires iOS 17.1 or later on iPhone, along with compatible software on the participating device.

NameDrop is not an automatic transfer of your entire address book. The person sharing chooses whether to share selected contact details or receive the other person’s details; the shared information can include a name, the selected phone number or email address, and associated Contact Poster information. Turning off Bring Devices Together prevents the proximity interaction from starting on that iPhone.
If the thing you want to stop is specifically the contact-sharing interaction when phones are close, use this setting first. Do not choose AirDrop Receiving Off as a substitute: Apple documents the receiving control for incoming files, while Bring Devices Together covers NameDrop and other bring-together features. Conversely, turning off Bring Devices Together does not mean the iPhone can no longer receive a file through AirDrop.
The setting is on the iPhone where you want to prevent the interaction. If you use more than one iPhone and want to stop the behavior on each one, check the setting on each device rather than assuming that changing one phone changes every device associated with your Apple Account. The same principle applies if another compatible device is involved: the setting you change should match the device on which you want to prevent the interaction.
How do I turn off Handoff on my iPhone?
Turn off Handoff in AirPlay & Continuity. Handoff is for continuing a task on another Apple device, rather than exchanging contact details when two devices are brought together.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then AirPlay & Continuity.
- Tap Handoff to turn it off.
Apple describes Handoff as a way to start a task on one device and complete it on another. It can work among an iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch when the devices meet compatibility requirements, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and are signed in to the same Apple Account.
If a Handoff suggestion still appears on a Mac, iPad, or another device, check that device’s own Handoff control as well. The iPhone switch controls Handoff on the configured iPhone; do not assume changing it disables every other Continuity endpoint.
This distinction matters if your concern is an app or task appearing as available on a companion device. Turning off Bring Devices Together addresses prompts caused by bringing devices close; it is not the Handoff control. Likewise, changing AirDrop’s receiving choice does not turn off Handoff. If you want to stop cross-device task continuation, use the Handoff switch and then review the companion device if the suggestion continues there.

- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Handoff depends on both device compatibility and connection/account conditions. Apple’s description specifies Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and the same Apple Account signed in across participating devices. Those conditions explain why Handoff can connect an iPhone with a Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch, but they do not make Handoff the same feature as AirDrop or NameDrop. Use its dedicated control instead of switching off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, which may affect other connectivity functions too.

How do I stop AirDrop from receiving files?
Change AirDrop’s receiving setting separately. Choose Receiving Off if you do not want that iPhone to accept incoming AirDrop items, or Contacts Only if you want to restrict who can send to it without fully disabling receiving.
To review it, open Settings > General > AirDrop and choose the receiving option you want. Available choices include Contacts Only, Everyone for 10 Minutes, and receiving off. Under Apple’s documented account conditions, Everyone for 10 Minutes reverts after ten minutes.
AirDrop is a nearby file-transfer feature that uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Apple says transfers are encrypted and the recipient can accept or decline each transfer as it arrives. Its receiving controls are distinct from Bring Devices Together and Handoff, so changing one does not automatically switch off the others.
Use Receiving Off when you want to make the iPhone unavailable to receive AirDropped items. Choose Contacts Only if you still want to receive items while narrowing availability. Choose Everyone for 10 Minutes when you need the broader receiving option temporarily; Apple says this choice changes back after ten minutes under the documented account conditions. These are different levels of AirDrop availability, not alternative names for the NameDrop or Handoff switches.

If two phones display a contact-sharing interaction just because they have been brought close, change Bring Devices Together. If you see an app or task offered on a Mac or iPad, check Handoff. Identifying the kind of prompt prevents you from disabling a feature that is unrelated to the problem.
Why does my iPhone keep showing AirDrop when phones are close?
The prompt may be related to NameDrop or another bring-together feature, while an AirDrop request to receive a file is controlled separately. Turn off Bring Devices Together first if the prompt appears specifically when devices are brought close; adjust AirDrop receiving if you also want to stop incoming file requests.
These dedicated settings are more precise than turning off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth globally. Disabling the radios can affect unrelated connectivity, while the settings above target the interaction you want to stop.
It can be easy to call every nearby-device prompt “AirDrop,” but the label can obscure the distinction. NameDrop is a contact-sharing interaction associated with bringing compatible devices together; AirDrop is Apple’s nearby file-transfer system. Both may involve nearby devices, but Apple documents separate controls for them. If the concern is the phone-to-phone contact prompt, go to Bring Devices Together. If the concern is a file arriving through AirDrop, choose the receiving setting that fits your needs.

AirDrop’s use of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can also make the features seem like one system. Those technologies support nearby transfers, but they are not the settings you need to change to block one specific behavior. Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth available if you still rely on other connectivity, and use the specific setting for NameDrop, Handoff, or AirDrop receiving.
What if I cannot find these settings?
Menu names can vary with iOS release, region, or device capability. In Settings, search for AirDrop or Handoff if the documented path does not match your screen. Look for Bring Devices Together within AirDrop and Handoff within AirPlay & Continuity.
All three controls can be changed back later in the same settings areas. If you only want to stop one behavior, leave the other controls as they are: disabling Bring Devices Together is not the same as disabling Handoff or turning off AirDrop receiving.
When troubleshooting, make one change at a time and match it to the symptom. If a contact prompt appears when devices are brought together, turn off Bring Devices Together and check whether that interaction stops. If cross-device app or task suggestions remain, review Handoff on the relevant iPhone and companion device. If incoming file requests are the problem, adjust AirDrop receiving on the device where you want to limit reception. This keeps the settings changes specific and makes it easier to identify which control addressed the issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a particular switch is not shown, consider that device capability and software version can affect the available controls. NameDrop requires iOS 17.1 or later on iPhone, plus compatible software on the participating Apple Watch or other device. Handoff also has compatibility requirements. Search Settings for the feature name if the menu path differs, and use the controls Apple documents for the software and device you have rather than assuming a missing menu means another switch controls the same behavior.
Should I turn off more than one setting?
Only if you want to stop more than one behavior. Turning off Bring Devices Together is enough for the NameDrop and proximity-sharing issue. It does not block ordinary AirDrop files or stop Handoff. Turning off Handoff addresses task continuation, not contact sharing or file reception. AirDrop Receiving Off blocks incoming AirDrop items on that device, but it does not disable NameDrop or Handoff.
A practical way to choose is to describe the unwanted event in plain language. “A contact card appears when I hold phones together” points to Bring Devices Together. “An app from my iPhone appears as something to continue on my Mac” points to Handoff. “Someone nearby can send me a file” points to AirDrop receiving. If you want all three behaviors limited, adjust all three controls; if you only have one concern, changing the other two is unnecessary.
There is no accessory, repair part, paid utility, subscription, or special tool required for these settings changes. The controls are built into Settings and can be restored later from the same areas. You can also choose a middle ground for AirDrop by using Contacts Only rather than switching receiving off completely.
