Use iPhone Personal Hotspot when you need your iPhone to share its cellular internet connection. They are different links: Wi-Fi connects a device to an existing network, while Personal Hotspot uses the iPhone’s cellular data and shares it over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB.
What’s the difference between iPhone hotspot and Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is the local wireless connection your laptop, tablet, or other device uses to join a network, such as your home router or a public access point. Personal Hotspot makes the iPhone a local access point for other devices, but its internet connection comes from the iPhone’s cellular service. It does not rebroadcast a Wi-Fi network the iPhone has joined. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains the supported sharing methods.

So the practical choice is usually whether to use an available Wi-Fi network or the iPhone’s cellular data—not whether to use “Wi-Fi” at all. Wi-Fi is also one way a client device can connect to the iPhone hotspot.
When should you use each option?
Use existing Wi-Fi when it is trusted and working
- Choose a known Wi-Fi network when it provides the access you need. Your device connects to that network rather than routing its internet traffic through the iPhone’s cellular plan.
- On public Wi-Fi, consider whether you trust the network before joining. A hotspot is not automatically safer or faster; no universal comparison applies across networks, plans, and devices.
Use Personal Hotspot when Wi-Fi is unavailable or unsuitable
- A hotspot can get another device online where the iPhone has cellular service and the carrier and plan permit Personal Hotspot.
- It is useful for a laptop or tablet that needs internet away from a suitable Wi-Fi network, but connected-device activity uses the iPhone’s cellular connection.
Check your plan, data use, and device limits
Personal Hotspot is not available with every carrier or plan. Additional fees may apply, and the number of devices that can connect at once depends on the carrier and iPhone model. Apple does not set one universal allowance or device cap for all customers. Check your carrier’s current plan terms and your cellular usage in iPhone settings before relying on hotspot access. Apple’s guide summarizes these carrier-dependent limits.

- WIFI 7 SPEEDS UP TO 3.6 GBPS, ANYWHERE YOU GO: Powered by a 5G or 4G cellular connection, M7 delivers fast, reliable WiFi 7 performance. Real-world speeds depend on carrier network, signal strength, location, and connected devices
- GLOBAL COVERAGE WITH NETGEAR eSIM IN 140+ COUNTRIES: Purchase 5G or 4G data plans from the Nighthawk app with no contracts. Requires free NETGEAR account. Coverage and speeds vary by country and carrier
- US CARRIER SUPPORT: The M7 is certified for AT&T and T-Mobile, unlocked for flexible use across compatible carriers. For US local carrier eSIM or SIM activation and data plan details, contact your carrier directly
- POWERFUL BUILT IN SECURITY - includes firewall protection, WPA3 encryption, and automatic firmware updates help protect your data when using public WiFi
- CONNECT UP TO 32 DEVICES AND FREE UP YOUR PHONE: A dedicated hotspot outperforms phone tethering. Connect laptops, tablets, and smart devices simultaneously while keeping your phone free
Because the hotspot shares cellular internet, traffic from connected devices uses cellular data. Turn Personal Hotspot off when you no longer need it to avoid unnecessary data charges. Apple also notes that a computer may connect when the iPhone is plugged in if the hotspot remains active. Devices automatically disconnect when the hotspot is not in use to save battery; that does not establish a fixed battery-life difference versus Wi-Fi.
Choose how the device connects to your iPhone
Apple documents Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB connections for Personal Hotspot. The best fit depends on the client device and the ports or wireless features it supports; the sources do not establish a universal speed or reliability winner.

| Connection | What to know |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Connect from the client’s Wi-Fi settings and enter the hotspot password when prompted. Eligible Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account or covered by Family Sharing may use Instant Hotspot. |
| Bluetooth | Apple documents Bluetooth as an alternative for connecting computers. Pair the devices and follow the connection settings for the computer. |
| USB | Connect with a cable that fits both devices. On Windows, Apple Devices or iTunes must be installed. A data-capable cable is needed; choose one for the actual ports on your iPhone and computer. |
For Apple’s setup and Instant Hotspot guidance, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should be enabled and the devices should be within 30 feet (10 meters). Apple presents this as a setup condition, not a guaranteed range in every environment. See the iPhone User Guide and Apple’s Instant Hotspot instructions.
Hotspot security and the Maximize Compatibility setting
Apple’s security documentation says Personal Hotspot uses WPA2/WPA3 Personal by default. On supported iPhones, Maximize Compatibility switches the hotspot to 2.4 GHz and WPA2 Personal, disabling 5 GHz and, where available, 6 GHz. Apple’s platform security guide also says Apple platforms provide a system-suggested, secure, random password by default for access point modes such as Personal Hotspot. Read Apple Platform Security’s access point security documentation.

- Provides fast and stable internet access using LTE network technology.
- Works on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for better range and improved performance.
- Compatible with multiple carriers offering LTE SIM cards (carrier compatibility may vary).
- Allows wired connection of up to 10 devices, ideal for home or office.
- User-friendly setup makes it ideal for home, small office, or travel use.
If a device cannot join under the default setting, try Maximize Compatibility as a troubleshooting step rather than leaving it on by default. Apple warns that “internet performance and Wi-Fi security might be reduced” for connected devices when the setting is enabled. If it does not resolve the connection issue, or is no longer needed, return to the default setting. Apple’s hotspot troubleshooting guidance describes this tradeoff.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Trusted Wi-Fi is available and works: join that network.
- No suitable Wi-Fi, but the iPhone has cellular service: use Personal Hotspot if your plan supports it and its data and device limits work for you.
- A client has trouble joining wirelessly: check the password and compatibility; try Maximize Compatibility only as a troubleshooting measure.
- A computer needs a wired connection: try USB with a data-capable cable that matches both devices; Windows requires Apple Devices or iTunes.
