The fairest grocery split starts with agreement, not arithmetic: identify personal purchases and genuinely shared items before checkout. Charge personal items to the roommate who requested them, divide only agreed shared items by a method everyone accepts, and decide in advance how to handle fees, discounts, substitutions, and rounding. Keep the final receipt and note who paid.
Agree what counts as shared before ordering
Make a shared list of items the roommates have agreed to use together and a separate list of personal purchases. A product appearing in one order does not automatically make it a shared expense. Ask each person to identify personal items before checkout, and clarify who is responsible if someone changes the order or accepts a substitution.

Then choose a rule for the shared portion. Equal division works when everyone agrees to share those items equally. When people are buying different amounts, item assignments or agreed exact amounts can reflect that difference more closely. A percentage split can also work if the roommates choose the ratio together; a ratio is not automatically fair just because it is easy to calculate.
Choose a split method that fits the basket
| Method | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Equal split | Everyone agrees the included shared expenses are shared equally. | Quick to calculate, but does not account for different personal purchases or unequal use. |
| Exact amounts | Each person’s portion has already been determined, such as by assigning receipt items. | Can match the receipt closely, but requires working out each person’s total. |
| Percentage split | Roommates have agreed on a particular ratio for a shared total. | Flexible, but only fair if the roommates accept the ratio. |
| Itemized split | Specific items belong to specific people or to an agreed shared group. | Transparent and precise, but takes more effort than splitting the whole total equally. |
| Share-based split | Roommates have agreed on unequal shares for an expense. | May suit an agreed uneven division; Splitwise says its share-based method does not work with receipt itemization, so assign items individually when itemizing. |
Splitwise’s help page on expense split methods documents equal, exact-amount, percentage, share-based, adjustment, reimbursement, and itemized options. It describes itemization this way: “Itemized: Enter individual items from a bill and assign them to specific people.” The same page says itemized entries can include tax, tip, and discounts. These are recording features, not a decision about which groceries your household considers shared.

Settle fees, discounts, and changes by agreement
Delivery or service charges, taxes, discounts, tips, and substitutions can complicate an otherwise clear item split. The sources cited here do not establish a universal allocation rule for grocery-order charges, and retailers or locations may handle them differently. Before placing the order, agree on one approach and apply it consistently.
- Divide common charges equally among the roommates, if everyone agrees.
- Allocate charges in proportion to each person’s item total, if that is the agreed arrangement.
- Use another explicit rule the household finds acceptable.
Decide as well how a discount will reduce the amount owed and who gets charged for a substituted item. Pick how to handle small rounding differences so the final amounts add up to the paid total.

Calculate each person’s share from the final receipt
- Open the final receipt or order summary and identify the person who paid.
- Assign each personal item to its intended recipient.
- Divide agreed shared items using the chosen equal, exact-amount, or percentage method.
- Apply the agreed treatment for common charges, discounts, tips, substitutions, and rounding.
- Record each roommate’s amount and the payer’s name alongside the receipt.
- Settle on a schedule everyone accepts, or record reimbursements as they happen.
For example, suppose a hypothetical $90 order for three roommates contains $24 in items just for A, $18 just for B, and $48 in items the roommates agreed to share equally. Each person’s share of the shared items is $16, making the totals A $40, B $34, and C $16. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a published statistic; any tax, delivery charge, discount, or tip would need to follow the roommates’ agreed rule.

A spreadsheet or written ledger can record item assignments, each person’s total, the payer, and reimbursements. For an ongoing apartment arrangement, Splitwise’s getting-started guidance describes using a group to track expenses, update balances, and record settlements or outside payments; it says expenses are equally split by default and other methods are available.
