How to Extend iPhone Battery Life and Find What Drains It

Find likely causes of iPhone battery drain in Settings, make targeted changes, and learn when Battery Health may point to service.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start in Settings > Battery: compare usage across days, inspect app and system activity, and match what you see to how you used your iPhone. Then make the change that fits the likely cause—such as limiting background activity, reducing alerts, or using Low Power Mode. Check Battery Health separately if the drain persists or iOS reports that service may be needed.

Find what is using battery in Settings

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Read any suggestions or Insights shown above Daily Usage and follow only those that apply to your use.
  3. Compare the Daily Usage chart with other days. On iOS 26, Apple describes a view comparing the current day with the previous seven days; tap a day to inspect its app and system activity.
  4. Review App and System Activity Usage for that day. Look at activity duration and context as well as each app’s share of battery use.

Apple’s activity details can identify on-screen use, background activity, low cellular coverage, and notifications. Battery life is “the amount of time that your device works before it needs to be recharged,” as Apple Support puts it. A large share for one app does not by itself mean the app is faulty: a game, camera, navigation app, or video session can use substantial power when you are actively using it.

Match the clues to a likely cause

What you see What it may mean What to try
Background Activity An app may be doing work while it is not on screen—for example, navigation, music playback, photo syncing, or mail fetching. If the same app repeatedly shows substantial background time, adjust its background use or the relevant in-app settings.
No Mobile Coverage, Low Signal, or cellular coverage activity The iPhone may be searching for a signal or operating where reception is weak. When practical, use the phone where coverage is stronger. For a known period without coverage, Airplane Mode can stop it searching for a network.
Notifications Alerts can wake the device and contribute to use. Reduce notifications for apps that do not need frequent alerts.
High brightness, Auto-Lock disabled, or Auto-Brightness disabled The display may be on longer or brighter than necessary. Lower brightness, allow the display to lock, and enable Auto-Brightness if the suggestion appears and suits your preferences.
Ongoing iOS Update or Ongoing Device Setup Background work after an update or setup can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. If the change began after updating, wait a few days and check usage again.

These clues are not interchangeable: a weak signal calls for a different response than an app doing background work. Use the label, how long the activity lasted, and what you were doing before changing settings.

Use Low Power Mode when you need to conserve charge

Low Power Mode reduces power use by limiting or pausing selected features. Depending on the iPhone, effects can include reduced brightness, a 30-second Auto-Lock, limiting supported ProMotion displays to 60 Hz, temporarily pausing iCloud Photos, and disabling automatic downloads, Mail fetch, or Background App Refresh. On supported models it can also change 5G behavior. Not every effect applies to every iPhone.

To turn it on, use the path for your model:

  • iPhone 14 or earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
  • iPhone 15 or later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.

You can also add Low Power Mode to Control Center. Apple says it turns off automatically after the iPhone is charged to 80% or higher. Because it restricts selected behavior, it is useful when conserving charge matters more than having every background feature run normally.

Check whether Adaptive Power is available

Adaptive Power requires iOS 26 or later and is supported on iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%. Apple says it avoids managing performance during activities that need maximum performance, such as camera use or gaming with Game Mode. The feature needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages.

Use the findings to choose a next step

  • One app shows repeated background activity: reduce that app’s background work or alerts, then review Battery usage again.
  • Drain coincides with weak reception: compare use in a stronger-coverage location, or use Airplane Mode during a known no-coverage period.
  • The display is flagged or stays on longer than you want: adjust brightness and Auto-Lock, and consider Auto-Brightness.
  • The issue began after setup or an iOS update: allow a few days for background work to settle, then reassess.
  • You need extra runtime right now: enable Low Power Mode; check Adaptive Power eligibility if you want supported automatic adjustments.
  • Battery Health reports Service: contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider about model-specific service.

Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal percentage improvement, expected runtime gain, or drain rate for these changes. Judge the result against your own usage chart and routine.
