Back up first, erase second, restore last. A backup saves a copy of your data; a reset (erase) removes information and settings from the device; a restore puts your personal data back from a selected backup. On a working iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. Use Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows when you need to reinstall device software or the device cannot complete the Settings process. During setup, choose Restore from iCloud Backup or select a computer backup. The safest sequence for a handoff, replacement, or troubleshooting job is to verify a backup, erase the device, then restore only the backup you intend to use.

What is the difference between a backup, a reset, and a restore?

These three actions solve different problems. Treating them as interchangeable can either destroy data you meant to keep or leave a device with its old software problem.

Action What it does When to use it
Backup Creates a recoverable copy in iCloud or on a Mac or PC. Before erasing, replacing, repairing, or troubleshooting a device.
Erase/reset Removes personal information and settings and returns the device to the Hello setup screen. Before handing the device to someone else, or when you want a clean start.
Computer factory restore Erases information and settings and installs the latest software supported by the restore process. When the device is not working normally, or when you specifically need to reinstall iOS or iPadOS.
Restore personal data Copies data and settings from a chosen iCloud or computer backup onto a new or erased device. During setup after an erase, replacement, or factory restore.

A factory restore and a personal-data restore are separate. The computer can reinstall the operating system without putting your old photos, messages, and settings back; you choose a backup afterward if you want your personal content returned.

Which backup should you choose: iCloud or a computer?

Choose iCloud when you want an off-device copy that can be made over Wi-Fi. Choose a computer when you have enough local storage and want the backup kept on a Mac or PC you control. You can make both before a major reset, but each has different exclusions.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Consideration iCloud backup Computer backup
Storage location Stored in iCloud. Stored on the Mac or PC that created it; local free space is required.
Connection Created over Wi-Fi. Requires a physical connection to the computer for the backup and restore workflow.
Encryption default Always encrypted. Encryption is available but off by default.
Health, Activity, and Keychain data Follow Apple’s iCloud backup and sync rules. Require an encrypted computer backup.
Access requirement You need the Apple Account used for the backup and Wi-Fi during setup. You must be able to access the computer that holds the backup; an encrypted backup also requires its password.

A backup is not a perfect mirror of the device. Apple says iCloud backups leave out information already synced to iCloud, such as Contacts, Calendars, and Notes. If iCloud Photos is enabled, photos are not duplicated in the backup; if Messages in iCloud is enabled, those messages are not duplicated either. Computer backups similarly exclude data already synced to iCloud, content synced from the computer, purchased-store content, and other categories. Check that synced data has finished updating before you erase.

How do I back up an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch before resetting it?

Back up while the device still works and verify that the copy completed. Use iCloud for a wireless copy, or use Finder or Apple Devices for a local copy.

Make an iCloud backup

  1. Connect the device to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud.
  3. Tap iCloud Backup and choose Back Up Now.
  4. Keep the device on Wi-Fi until the backup finishes. The same screen shows the latest completed backup time.

Do not erase merely because the backup button was tapped. Confirm a recent completion time, and separately check categories that are synchronized rather than included in the backup file. If the device cannot stay connected to Wi-Fi, use a computer backup instead.

Make a computer backup on a Mac

  1. Update macOS before starting, then connect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a compatible USB or USB-C data cable. Verify that the connector fits both the device and the Mac.
  2. Open Finder and select the device in the sidebar. Follow the trust prompt on the device and Mac if it appears.
  3. In the General tab, choose the option to back up the device to this Mac and select Back Up Now.
  4. For Health, Activity, and Keychain data, select Encrypt local backup and create a password you can retrieve later. Without encryption, those categories are not included.
  5. Wait for the backup date and time in Finder to update before disconnecting.

Make a computer backup on Windows

  1. Update Windows and the Apple Devices app, then connect the device with a compatible USB or USB-C data cable.
  2. Open Apple Devices, select the device, and approve any trust request.
  3. Choose the backup controls, select a local backup, and start the backup.
  4. Turn on local-backup encryption if you need Health, Activity, or Keychain data, then record the password securely.
  5. Leave the device connected until Apple Devices reports that the backup has completed.

A computer backup consumes local storage. If the Mac or PC is nearly full, free space before starting rather than interrupting the process. A successful local backup is tied to that computer; moving to another computer requires moving the backup itself or using iCloud.

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How do I factory-reset a working iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch?

Use the built-in Settings route when the device responds normally. This erases personal information and settings and ends at the Hello screen.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Scroll to Transfer or Reset [device]. The label uses the device type, such as “Transfer or Reset iPhone.”
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Review the preparation screen and follow the prompts. Enter the device passcode and Apple Account password when requested.
  6. When asked about the eSIM, decide whether to keep or erase it (details below).
  7. Confirm the erase and wait for the Hello screen. Do not interrupt the process by powering off the device.

What should I do with the eSIM during an erase?

Keep the eSIM when the device is staying with you and you want the cellular plan to remain installed. Erase the eSIM when the device is being transferred and the next user should not receive your cellular plan. Apple warns that if you erase the eSIM, you must contact your carrier to reactivate cellular service; do not remove it casually if you are troubleshooting and plan to keep the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the Settings erase remove?

It removes the information and settings stored on the device and returns it to setup. It does not create a backup, so complete and check your backup first. Data that was already synchronized to iCloud remains available through that service when you sign in again, subject to the account and sync settings involved.

How do I factory-restore an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a computer?

Use a computer restore when the device is malfunctioning, cannot complete the Settings erase, or needs its operating system reinstalled. Apple describes this as an operation that removes all information and settings and installs device software.

  1. Update the Mac or PC. Apple recommends doing this before the restore.
  2. Make a backup first if the device can still be accessed and you want its data.
  3. Connect the device to the computer with a compatible USB or USB-C data cable. Check both ports; cable ends differ by device and computer.
  4. On a Mac, open Finder. On Windows, open Apple Devices.
  5. Select the connected device and approve the trust prompts. If the computer presents an on-screen restore choice, confirm that you want to restore.
  6. Follow the prompts while the computer erases the device and installs the latest software supported by the restore process.
  7. Keep the cable attached until the computer reports completion and the device reaches setup.

Apple’s concise description is: “This factory restore removes all information and settings from your device.” A computer restore is not the same as putting your old data back. After it finishes, proceed through setup and select an iCloud or computer backup if you want personal content restored.

How do I restore an iPhone or iPad from an iCloud backup?

Use the iCloud restore option during the initial setup of a new, erased, or computer-restored device. The device needs Wi-Fi and the Apple Account associated with the backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start at the Hello screen and follow the setup screens until Transfer Your Apps & Data appears.
  2. Choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
  3. Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup.
  4. Choose the backup by date and size. Select the most recent backup that contains the information you need, not merely the newest entry if a particular older state is important.
  5. Keep the device connected to Wi-Fi and power while content is restored.

Basic setup can finish before every app, photo, or other item has downloaded. Leave the device on Wi-Fi and power so pending downloads can continue. If the device has already been configured, Apple requires you to erase it before the setup restore option appears: use the Settings erase route, return to the Hello screen, and select the backup then.

Can I restore my iPhone or iPad from a computer backup?

Yes. Connect a new or erased device to the Mac or PC that contains the backup, then select the relevant backup in Finder or Apple Devices. An encrypted backup cannot be restored without the password created when encryption was enabled.

  1. Update the computer and open Finder on Mac or Apple Devices on Windows.
  2. Connect the new or erased device with the compatible USB or USB-C data cable.
  3. Select the device and choose the option to restore from a backup on that computer.
  4. Pick the backup by date and size.
  5. Enter the encrypted-backup password if prompted.
  6. Keep the device connected until the initial restore completes. Leave it on Wi-Fi and power afterward if apps or other content continue downloading.

Computer backups do not include items that were already synced to iCloud, content synchronized from the computer, purchased-store content, or certain other categories. Therefore, a successful computer restore can still require an Apple Account sign-in and time for synchronized content to reappear.

What if the backup requires a newer iOS or iPadOS version?

A backup may have been created on a newer system than the device currently runs. In that case, the restore cannot proceed until the device is updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Complete setup without transferring data when the restore screen reports the version mismatch.
  2. Update the device to the required newer iOS or iPadOS version.
  3. Erase the device again using Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings.
  4. Return to setup and choose the same iCloud or computer backup.

This two-stage process is expected when the backup’s system requirements are newer than the software initially installed on the device.

Which method should I use?

The right route depends on whether the device works, whether you can reach a computer, and whether you need only an erase or a software reinstall.

Your situation Best route Why
Device works and you are preparing a sale or handoff Back up, then Settings erase. It is the shortest Apple-supported path to the Hello screen.
Device works and you want an operating-system reinstall Back up, then computer factory restore. The computer erases and installs supported device software.
Device is frozen, repeatedly failing, or cannot open Settings Computer restore, if the computer recognizes it. Finder or Apple Devices can perform the erase and software installation.
You have no computer but need to preserve data iCloud backup over Wi-Fi, followed by the Settings erase. No cable or computer is needed for the backup or in-device erase.
You need Health, Activity, or Keychain data in a local copy Encrypted computer backup. Apple specifies encryption for those categories.

What can go wrong, and how do I recover?

  • No recent backup time: keep the device connected to Wi-Fi or the computer and run the backup again. Do not erase until a completion time is visible.
  • Not enough iCloud space: use a computer backup if local storage is available, or review which information is already synced before deciding what must be preserved.
  • Computer does not see the device: update macOS, Windows, Finder, or Apple Devices; reconnect with a data-capable cable; and approve the trust prompt. Check that the cable matches both ports.
  • Encrypted-backup password requested: the password is mandatory for that backup. Without it, select another backup or create a new one if the original device is still accessible.
  • Cellular service disappears after erasing: if the eSIM was erased, contact the carrier to reactivate the plan.
  • Restore appears stuck after setup: keep the device on Wi-Fi and power because apps and other content can continue downloading after the initial setup.
  • Backup will not restore because of software version: finish setup without transferring, update iOS or iPadOS, erase again, and repeat the setup restore.

What should I check before handing the device to someone else?

Use this sequence to avoid the most common handoff mistakes:

  1. Confirm that the latest iCloud or computer backup completed.
  2. Check that contacts, calendars, notes, photos, and messages that are synced to iCloud have finished syncing; they may not be inside the backup file.
  3. Decide whether the eSIM should stay on the device. Erasing it means the carrier must reactivate service later.
  4. Run Erase All Content and Settings and provide the passcode and Apple Account password when requested.
  5. Stop at the Hello screen. Do not sign in again or begin setup for the recipient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep both an iCloud backup and a computer backup?

Yes. Creating both gives you two storage locations and two restore paths, which can be useful before a major repair or handoff. They still follow their own exclusions, so maintaining two copies does not make synced data part of either backup file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a restored device still need Wi-Fi after setup finishes?

The initial restore can complete before apps and other content have downloaded. Leave the device connected to Wi-Fi and power until those downloads finish; the setup completion screen is not necessarily the end of every download.

What happens if I choose the wrong backup?

The setup restore flow uses the backup you select by date and size. If it is the wrong state, you must erase the device again and repeat setup to choose a different backup, so check the backup timestamp before confirming.

Do I need the original cable for a computer restore?

No specific brand of cable is required, but it must carry data and fit both ports. USB and USB-C connectors vary by device and computer, so verify compatibility before starting a backup or restore.

Can I restore an iCloud backup onto a device that is already set up?

Not directly through Apple’s setup restore flow. Erase the configured device first, return to the Hello screen, and then choose Restore from iCloud Backup during setup.
