1. Find what is draining the battery
Open Settings > Battery. Review the usage chart, App and System Activity, and any Suggestions or Insights shown above the chart. On iOS 26 or later, Apple’s Battery screen includes a Daily Usage chart; the exact information shown depends on iOS version and device.

Look for patterns rather than assuming every app is a problem. An app with substantial background activity, frequent notifications, or long screen time may explain a drop in charge. Low cellular signal or system activity can also contribute. Apple’s guide to troubleshooting an iPhone or iPad battery that drains too quickly recommends using the Battery screen to identify possible causes.

If the drain began just after an iOS update or setting up the phone, some background work may continue temporarily. Apple advises waiting a few days, then checking usage again.
2. Lower screen brightness
A bright display uses power. Reduce brightness in Control Center or go to Settings > Display & Brightness and choose a comfortable level. If auto-brightness is off, consider turning it on; Apple may also surface this as a Battery suggestion.
3. Set Auto-Lock so the screen turns off when idle
If the display often stays on while you are not using the phone, shorten the Auto-Lock interval. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose an interval that suits your routine. There is no single best timeout for everyone: a shorter one saves power when you step away, while a longer one may be more convenient for reading or reference.

4. Prefer Wi-Fi and strong network coverage
Wi-Fi generally uses less battery than a mobile network, and both Wi-Fi and cellular connections use less energy where the signal is strong. Use reliable Wi-Fi when practical. In a known dead zone where you will not need connectivity, Airplane Mode can stop the phone from repeatedly seeking a signal; remember that it also disconnects wireless services until you re-enable them.

5. Use 5G Auto where available
On iPhone 12 models and later, and iPhone SE (3rd generation), the 5G Auto (also called Smart Data) option can switch to LTE when 5G does not noticeably improve the experience. This avoids using 5G continuously when it is not providing a meaningful benefit; it does not mean 5G should always be disabled.

To check the available setting, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Labels and path can vary by carrier, region, and iOS version.

Low Power Mode reduces some background and display activity in exchange for convenience or performance. It can limit features such as Background App Refresh and Mail fetch, dim the display, and make some tasks take longer. It is useful when you need to stretch the current charge, but it does not restore a battery that has lost capacity.
On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. It turns off automatically when the charge reaches 80% or more. See Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions for current details.

7. Check whether Adaptive Power is supported
Adaptive Power is available on certain models with iOS 26 or later. It can make performance adjustments, slightly reduce brightness, limit background activity, and enable Low Power Mode when charge reaches 20%. Apple lists iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air as having it on by default; some iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models support it but have it off by default. Support and defaults can change, so check your phone rather than assuming the feature is available.
If your iPhone supports it, look under Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power. Apple’s Adaptive Power overview describes eligible devices and behavior.
8. Reduce background activity or notifications selectively
Use the Battery activity details to identify an app whose background use or notifications line up with unusually high drain. Then adjust that app’s notification or background settings if the change will not disrupt something you rely on. Turning off notifications or Background App Refresh for every app can hide useful alerts or delay updates without addressing the actual cause. Low Power Mode temporarily disables Background App Refresh.

9. Protect the battery from excessive heat
Heat is primarily a long-term battery-health concern, not a runtime setting. Apple gives an ideal ambient operating range of 16–22°C and warns against using or charging iPhone above 35°C, because this can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car or direct sun, especially while charging.
Cold temperatures can temporarily shorten battery life; normal performance generally returns after the device warms back into its normal operating range. See Apple’s iPhone battery maintenance guidance for operating-temperature details.
10. Optimize charging and check battery health
Reduce time spent fully charged
Optimized Battery Charging is enabled by default and reduces the time the iPhone spends at a full charge. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Charging to set a charge limit from 80% to 100%. At a 100% limit, Optimized Battery Charging remains available. These options are intended to help preserve long-term battery lifespan; they do not add charge to the current battery.

Check whether the battery needs service
Open Settings > Battery and check Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later. On iPhone 14 and earlier, look under Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Lithium-ion batteries chemically age, reducing the charge they can hold and potentially peak performance. If the status says Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Which changes help now, and which preserve capacity?

When battery tweaks are not the answer
If Battery settings point to a specific app, network condition, or screen-use pattern, address that cause and observe whether the drain changes. If the phone continues to run short despite ordinary use, check Battery Health rather than disabling features indiscriminately. A Service status is a reason to consider battery replacement; a charger or power bank can replenish charge, but neither improves the iPhone’s runtime per charge.
