For most people new to software quality assurance, learn testing fundamentals and practice manual test design first, then add programming and automation. That order helps you understand what a useful test is before asking code to repeat it. It is a practical recommendation, not a prerequisite: programmers and learners targeting automation-focused roles can study testing principles while building small automated checks.

What manual testing and automation testing do

In manual testing, a person performs checks and evaluates what the software does. Exploratory testing goes further: the tester designs, runs, and evaluates tests while learning about the product. That human judgment is useful when investigating unexpected behavior or interpreting a user’s experience. ASTQB’s description of the ISTQB Foundation Level technique explains that exploratory tests are designed, executed, and evaluated as the tester learns about the test object.

Test automation uses software to execute checks, evaluate outcomes, and support repeatable runs. It can help with frequent regression checks and repeated execution across environments, but it only checks what has been encoded. A failure may still require a person to investigate whether the product, test, or environment caused it. Automation also takes design, implementation, and continuing maintenance. The A4Q Selenium 4 Tester Foundation Syllabus (2023) covers both manual and automated testing approaches.

How to choose between manual and automated testing

Decision factor Manual testing Test automation
Human judgment Useful for exploration, usability, and interpreting context. Checks encoded expectations; a person may need to investigate failures.
Repeatability Repeating checks takes time and results can vary between runs. Can run checks on demand and repeatedly, subject to test and environment reliability.
Good-fit work Exploratory investigation, complex scenarios, changing interfaces, and usability-focused testing. Frequent regression checks, broad repeated execution, and some reliability or performance testing.
Cost over time Often needs less setup for a few simple checks, but repeated execution consumes time. Requires setup and maintenance; its value depends on suitability, frequency, and long-term cost.
Skills involved Structured test thinking and careful product observation. Test thinking plus programming and test-code design.

Neither approach is universally better. Before automating, weigh how often a check runs against the effort to build and maintain it. Suitability also depends on complexity, process maturity, tool support, interface reliability, sustainability, and expected return. ISTQB’s Test Automation Strategy materials address costs, risks, applicability, maintenance, metrics, and transition planning.

A practical learning sequence

  1. Learn testing fundamentals. Understand the purpose of testing, risk, test conditions, and clear expected outcomes. ISTQB describes its Foundation Level as providing essential terminology and broad testing knowledge.
  2. Practice on a small application. Write structured checks, then explore the product without relying only on a fixed script. Observe behavior and record what happened, what you expected, and how to reproduce a problem.
  3. Learn programming basics relevant to your goal. There is no universal first language established by these sources. Connect your choice to the target role, application, or codebase rather than selecting a language or tool solely because it is popular.
  4. Automate one stable, repetitive scenario. Start with a check that runs often and has clear expected results. Do not assume every manual test should become an automated test.
  5. Learn to diagnose and maintain the test. Investigate failures, update checks when the product changes, and assess whether the automation remains worth its upkeep.

This sequence is a reasoned learning path, not a formal rule that everyone must master manual testing before writing code. The Foundation Level can provide useful grounding, but a specialist certification’s entry criteria apply to that qualification, not to every learner. For example, the ISTQB CT-TAS certification specifies a Foundation Level certificate and practical experience.

Which should you learn first in your situation?

  • New to QA and programming: Begin with testing fundamentals and hands-on manual practice. This helps you learn to identify useful checks before automating them; it does not mean you must postpone learning code.
  • Already comfortable programming: You can build small automated tests while learning test design. Keep attention on what the test verifies and how you will maintain it.
  • Working with a frequently changing product: Keep exploratory and manual testing in the mix. Changing requirements or an unstable interface can make automated checks harder to sustain.
  • Repeating the same check often: Consider automation after comparing setup and maintenance effort with the expected benefit.
  • Evaluating subjective experience or unexpected behavior: Use manual exploration and human interpretation; a scripted check cannot replace those judgments.

Choose an automation tool only after checking the work

Start with the application and task, not a tool list. If the work involves browser testing, identify the target browsers, application stack, and expectations of the role or team. The Selenium overview begins by asking whether browser testing is needed and recognizes that manual testing can be the better solution in some circumstances. If the task does not involve a browser, a browser automation tool may not fit.

For training, ISTQB says accredited courses are offered in classroom, virtual, and e-learning formats, while self-study using the syllabus and recommended reading is also an option. Check that any course or study material matches the current syllabus and local availability; certification versions and offerings can change.
