AI Labels: What Claude Watermarks Can—and Can’t—Prove

Claude uses text watermarks and file credentials on supported outputs, but neither proves who authored an idea or whether content is true. Here’s what the signals can—and can’t—tell you.

AI companies should make it possible to recognize when their systems have generated or processed content. Claude’s watermarks and file credentials are a useful example, but they signal possible system involvement—not who authored the ideas, whether the content is true, or who owns it. Their coverage varies by model and feature, and a missing mark is not proof that a person wrote the content.

What Claude’s marks are and how to check them

Anthropic describes two different provenance signals: an imperceptible watermark embedded in text from supported Claude models, and signed C2PA Content Credentials in the metadata of some supported files, such as PNG or JPEG images. The text watermark is designed to persist through copying and pasting and may survive some editing. File credentials attach provenance information to the file rather than embedding a text signal in its words.

Support depends on the model, feature, and platform. Anthropic’s model information distinguishes models that support both text watermarks and file credentials from those that support file credentials but not text watermarks; it does not establish that every Claude answer or file is marked. See Anthropic’s current documentation for its model and product details.

Checking a supported file

Anthropic offers a public file checker that checks whether a supported file contains a Claude Content Credential. It does not check text. Anthropic says the file remains on the user’s device and is not stored or used for another purpose. The checker is available at Claude’s Content Credentials page.

Checking text

Text watermark detection is in private preview for eligible organizations, including certain public-interest organizations and enterprises with relevant compliance needs. It is not a public checker for anyone to paste a passage into. Anthropic’s public explanation describes the limits of interpreting text watermark results: Claude Content Credentials and watermarking.

What a watermark actually proves

Anthropic’s own formulation is appropriately narrow: “A watermark can only determine that Claude was likely involved with the content at some point.” It does not distinguish between Claude originating text and Claude substantially editing text that began elsewhere. A translation produced by Claude may carry a mark because Claude selected the words.

  • A positive signal: evidence that a supported Claude system may have generated or processed the content. It does not identify the person or organization who used Claude, establish that Claude originated the ideas, verify factual accuracy, or settle ownership.
  • A negative result: not evidence of human authorship. The model or feature may not support marking, and short passages, heavy editing, paraphrasing, translation, or mixed text can affect detection.

Watermarks and file credentials are provenance tools, not general-purpose AI detectors. A cryptographic credential attached to a file and an inference about a text passage are different kinds of signal; neither should be treated as a verdict on authorship or truth. Anthropic’s public materials describe intended behavior and caveats, not independent accuracy measurements under every kind of editing or transformation.

Why AI companies have a basic responsibility to label output

When generated material circulates without context, readers may have no practical way to tell whether a system created or transformed it. Providers are best positioned to attach provenance information at creation or export, explain what it means, and offer ways to check it. That does not make a mark a complete record of human contribution. It gives readers useful context while preserving the distinction between system involvement and authorship.

Providers should make coverage understandable rather than implying that one mark applies everywhere. Readers need to know which content types are covered, whether the signal is embedded in the content or attached as metadata, which models and product surfaces support it, and how to verify it. Companies should also explain what positive and negative results cannot establish.

How the EU AI Act changes the context

As of October 2026, Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The European Commission describes provider duties that include machine-readable marking of generated or manipulated content and enabling detection. Deployer duties include disclosure in defined cases, including deepfakes and certain AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest. The precise duty depends on the system, the actor’s role, and the content; the rules do not mean every AI-assisted sentence must be visibly labeled by every user. See the Commission’s AI regulatory framework and its Code of Practice on marking and labelling AI-generated content.

The Code of Practice is a voluntary compliance framework, not the law itself. The underlying Article 50 obligations are binding for those covered. The Commission describes adherence to the Code as a recognized way to demonstrate compliance, but not conclusive evidence that an organization complies. About 190 organizations had signed by the end of July 2026, according to the European Commission; that participation count does not measure the quality or effectiveness of their labeling systems.

Why no single label is enough

Provenance signals can be lost or weakened as content moves between services. Metadata may disappear when files are edited, exported, or shared through systems that do not preserve it. Embedded watermarks may persist through some changes but become harder to detect after extensive transformation. A robust approach therefore uses layers: machine-readable metadata, embedded signals where appropriate, and verification tools that explain their scope.

OpenAI describes a similar layered approach, including C2PA metadata, watermarks for supported images and audio, and textGrain watermarks for ChatGPT-generated text in the EU. Its documentation also warns that metadata can be lost and extensive changes can weaken watermarks; a missing signal is inconclusive. These are provider descriptions, not independent comparative tests. See OpenAI’s explanation of its provenance approach.

What readers should look for in AI labels

When evaluating a provider’s labeling system, ask four practical questions:

  • What content is covered? Check whether the system marks text, images, audio, video, or only some of these.
  • Where does the signal live? An embedded watermark and metadata attached to a file behave differently when content is copied, edited, or exported.
  • Where does support apply? Coverage may vary across models, products, regions, and export paths.
  • Can people verify and interpret it? A useful system needs an accessible checker or detection process and a clear explanation that a positive result indicates involvement, not authorship or accuracy.

Without independent testing, provider claims do not establish how reliably a signal survives every transformation. The practical standard should be transparency about both coverage and limits—not a promise that labels can settle every question about who wrote or owns a piece of content.
