As of October 4, 2026, Apple has announced the iPhone 18 Pro, but not the standard iPhone 18. So there is no confirmed, complete head-to-head comparison yet. Buy the Pro if its documented camera features and other specifications fit your needs and budget; if you want the standard model or a verified comparison, wait for Apple to announce it.
What is available to compare today?
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. The standard iPhone 18 has not launched, and Apple has not published its specifications or price. MacRumors reported on August 28 that the standard model was expected in spring 2027, but that is a reported expectation—not an Apple-confirmed release date. Apple’s announcement and MacRumors’ timing report therefore support different kinds of claims.

That means claims about the standard iPhone 18’s chip, screen, cameras, battery, price, or release date would be speculation at this point. The comparison below describes what Apple has confirmed about the Pro and what remains unknown about the standard model.

What the iPhone 18 Pro adds for camera users
Variable aperture and Pro controls
The Pro’s 48MP Fusion Main camera has four listed aperture settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0. Apple also lists Pro controls for adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. These features give people who want to shape a shot more direct control in the Camera app; whether that matters depends on how you take photos and video.
Apple describes the combination as bringing creative control that was not possible before. That is the company’s characterization of the feature, not a third-party comparison against an unannounced iPhone 18.
Rank #2

Dedicated telephoto hardware
Apple lists a 4x telephoto camera, 8x optical-quality telephoto framing, and up to 40x digital zoom. Those labels are not interchangeable: the 40x figure is digital zoom, while the optical-quality framing claim describes a different capability. The standard iPhone 18’s camera and zoom options are unknown, so there is not yet a confirmed basis for deciding how much more versatile the Pro is than that model.
What the Pro’s screen, chip, and AI mean in practice
Display and performance
The Pro has a 6.3-inch OLED display with adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and Apple’s A20 Pro chip. TechRadar’s September 2026 hands-on review, after a week with the phones and hundreds of photos and dozens of videos, praised camera detail and the creative options of the variable aperture and controls. The reviewer described daily performance as capable but did not find a dramatic everyday speed leap over A19 Pro, and also reported improved thermal management. Those are that reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee of what every user will notice.
Rank #3
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Without the standard iPhone 18’s display and chip specifications, the Pro’s size, refresh rate, or performance cannot be compared directly with it.
Siri AI availability
Apple says Siri AI will roll out as an iOS 27 beta, initially in English, with additional languages planned for October. Availability varies by region and language. Apple Support also says Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iOS. Check Apple’s current availability information for your location and language rather than assuming every advertised AI feature is ready for every buyer at launch.

Who should buy the iPhone 18 Pro—and who should wait?
Consider the Pro if its confirmed features are the point
- You want a variable-aperture main camera, manual camera controls, and dedicated telephoto hardware.
- You want the confirmed 6.3-inch adaptive-refresh OLED display and A20 Pro.
- You can use one of Apple’s listed storage options and are comfortable with the U.S. starting price of $1,199 for 256GB, or have checked the current price in your market.
Wait if you are choosing specifically between the two models
- You prefer a standard iPhone or want to know whether it will offer the features you need at a different price.
- You want a reliable comparison of battery life, size, weight, screen, cameras, or chip performance before deciding.
- You do not need to replace your phone before Apple announces the standard iPhone 18.
For a meaningful comparison, check Apple’s announcement for the standard model against the Pro on equivalent storage and local pricing, then compare display, camera and zoom features, battery and charging, chip performance, AI availability, and physical size. Until those standard-model details are official, there is no evidence-based way to say which is better value overall.
