What is known about iPhone 18 Pro discoloration?
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications list four finishes—Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy—and describe an aluminum unibody design. They do not establish a discoloration problem.

Reports about finish durability and color shifts concern prior-generation devices or repeat rumors. MacRumors covered finish-related complaints and rumors in May 2026 and June 2026. Those reports are not an Apple service notice or a controlled test, and they do not show how often iPhone 18 Pro phones discolor. There is no established defect rate or evidence that one listed finish is more likely than another to change color.
A visible color difference is still relevant when judging a used phone’s condition. Appearance alone cannot identify whether it came from wear, a repair, a manufacturing issue, or another cause.

How to inspect the finish and exterior
- Remove the case. Inspect the bare phone in neutral, bright light so you can see covered areas as well as exposed ones.
- Compare the surfaces. Look at the sides, back, corners, camera surround, and areas around the buttons. Check for uneven color, chips, scratches, scuffs, dents, or apparent color loss, especially at edges and contact points.
- Compare with the listing. Photograph the device from consistent angles and save the seller’s photos and description. Note any mismatch promptly, particularly if the phone was shipped.
- Ask about its history. Ask the seller whether they know of repairs or other relevant history, and whether the visible finish matches the listing. Do not treat a color shift as proof of a specific cause.
Apple’s pre-owned iPhone buying guide recommends checking the sides and back for scratches, scuffs, and dents, and removing the case if needed.
Check the seller and return terms
For an online purchase, Apple recommends choosing a reliable seller, understanding the return period and conditions, and asking what a seller’s certification process actually checks. For a cosmetic concern, confirm that the return terms cover a phone whose delivered condition differs from the listing. Keep the listing description and images, and inspect the phone as soon as it arrives.

Check Activation Lock and basic operation
Apple’s instruction is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If buying in person, ask the seller to turn it off. If a delivered phone shows an “iPhone Locked to Owner” screen, Apple advises returning it rather than proceeding with the purchase.
Once the phone can be set up, test its basic functions. A clean-looking exterior does not establish that the rest of the device works properly.

Review battery health and Parts and Service History
Battery health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health and Charging and review maximum capacity and any alerts. Apple notes that battery-health information may not be accurate if the battery cannot be verified as genuine; consider that limitation when assessing the displayed information.
Apple explains the verification caveat in its guidance about genuine iPhone batteries.

Parts and Service History
Open Settings > General > About and review Parts and Service History if it appears. Depending on the part and circumstances, labels may include Genuine, Used, Unknown, or Unverified. Apple’s Parts and Service History guide explains the labels. An Unknown label can indicate a non-genuine, unverified, incomplete, modified, or malfunctioning part; it does not by itself prove that the exterior finish is defective.
Compare used listings on more than color
When choosing among phones, compare each device’s visible condition with its own listing, then weigh the practical purchase checks below. The evidence does not support ranking the four finishes by discoloration risk.
