Battlefield 6 has already released, so this is no longer a list for waiting on its launch. It is a guide to military shooters worth trying if Battlefield is not hitting the right note—or if you want a different kind of battle between matches. For large combined-arms fights, start with Squad; for close infantry combat, try Insurgency: Sandstorm; for a WWII battlefield, choose Hell Let Loose; and for a player-built sandbox, consider Arma Reforger.
Choose by the kind of battle you want
“Military shooter” covers very different experiences. Before choosing, consider battle scale and pace, the balance of infantry and vehicles, whether you want modern or historical combat, how much teamwork a match expects, and whether you prefer PvP, co-op, or a sandbox. The recommendations below are drawn from GamesRadar+’s comparison guide, Bohemia Interactive’s Arma Reforger page, and Activision’s Modern Warfare II page; they are not results from a controlled, head-to-head test.

For Battlefield-style scale and combined arms: Squad
Squad is the closest fit here if the appeal of Battlefield is the sense of a broad, coordinated conflict with vehicles supporting infantry. GamesRadar+ describes large battles and a roster that includes trucks, artillery, boats, and helicopters. The trade-off is pace and expectation: it is a milsim, so communication, coordination, and adjustment to a less arcade-like style matter more than simply chasing a quick firefight.

For focused infantry combat: Insurgency: Sandstorm
Insurgency: Sandstorm suits players who would rather concentrate on dangerous, close-range infantry engagements than spend a match moving between vehicles and objectives. The guide describes tight maps and both versus and co-op modes. Its vehicle presence is limited to technicals, so it is a change of emphasis from Battlefield’s combined-arms fights, not a one-for-one replacement.

For historical battles: Hell Let Loose
Hell Let Loose moves the action to World War II. Its battles feature tanks, artillery, and distinct roles across European and North African theatres. Choose it for a larger historical battlefield rather than modern or near-future combat. The role system and teamwork make it a more demanding choice if you want to drop into a match without learning how your squad fits into the fight.

For a military sandbox: Arma Reforger
Arma Reforger is for players who want more control over how an engagement takes shape. Bohemia Interactive lists Conflict multiplayer, Game Master scenario creation, and Workbench modding on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. Those tools make it a different proposition from a tightly scripted, quick-match shooter: expect a player-driven sandbox rather than a direct Battlefield substitute.
Bohemia Interactive’s page includes a development report dated September 22, 2026. That is a dated development update, not evidence of current player population, matchmaking quality, or regional availability.

For a campaign alongside multiplayer: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
If your alternative needs to offer a solo campaign as well as online play, Activision’s official Modern Warfare II page lists a global campaign, multiplayer, and Special Ops. It also links to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox stores. The page confirms those modes, but it is not a current assessment of matchmaking activity, price, or ongoing support, so check the relevant store and platform before buying for multiplayer.

War Thunder: make vehicles the main event
War Thunder is the vehicle-focused option: GamesRadar+ highlights fighter aircraft, destroyers, and tanks. It is a poor match if infantry combat is essential, and the guide notes progression or spending as factors to consider.

Foxhole: contribute beyond direct firefights
Foxhole emphasizes the work behind the frontline as well as combat: players produce and transport equipment. Its isometric perspective makes it a substantial change from a first-person Battlefield-style shooter, but it may appeal if logistics and a persistent war matter more to you than aiming down sights.
Keep the Battlefield comparison current
Battlefield 6 has released, according to GamesRadar+’s comparison guide, so “while you wait” is best read as wanting alternatives or a change of pace—not as a claim that its launch is still pending. EA’s Battlefield 2042 page describes 17+ maps, class-based gameplay, Conquest and Breakthrough, and weapons, vehicles, jets, and helicopters; it shows September 8, 2025 as its latest listed update. That page does not establish live-service status or current population. If you are choosing an alternative because of a specific Battlefield game, compare against that game and the experience you want, rather than assuming every Battlefield entry offers the same modes or feel.
