iPadOS 26’s biggest workday change is that you can treat apps more like desktop windows: move, resize, tile and switch among them. Preview and new Files options also make document work more direct. Those capabilities are useful when they fit the way you work, but Apple’s feature descriptions aren’t proof of measured productivity gains. This guide sticks to what Apple announced and documents how to use the window controls.
What’s actually useful in iPadOS 26?
The most consequential change is a windowing system for arranging multiple app windows, rather than relying only on full-screen apps and fixed multitasking layouts. Apple says it works with Stage Manager and external displays. The practical appeal is having a document, reference or communication app visible alongside the app you’re actively using; whether that helps depends on your apps and screen size.

Two other changes target common desk work: Preview can mark up PDFs and images, while Files adds more ways to organize and reopen working material. Apple also announced background tasks and audio/video workflow features, but those are capabilities—not independent evidence of speed, recording quality or compatibility in every app.

To turn on the windowed layout, open Settings → Multitasking & Gestures → Windowed Apps, as described by Apple Support. Then open an app from the Home Screen, Dock or App Library.

- Resize: Drag a window corner or its lower-right handle.
- Move: Drag the window’s top edge.
- Arrange several apps: Open additional apps and move or resize their windows into the layout you want. Apple says windows can also be tiled.
- Find open windows: Use Exposé to see open app windows. With some external keyboards, Apple Support says there may be a dedicated Exposé key or a Globe key + Up Arrow shortcut; availability depends on the keyboard.
For example, you could place a PDF beside a writing app while drafting from it. That is a possible workflow, not a guarantee that every app supports every window arrangement equally well. An external display can add workspace, but neither a display nor a keyboard is required to use windowing.
Apple’s announcement describes windowing alongside Stage Manager and external displays; it does not establish that every iPad model, app or configuration behaves identically. Check your device and app support if a control or layout is unavailable.

Can I mark up PDFs in Preview on iPad?
Yes. Apple announced Preview as an iPad app for viewing and editing PDFs and images. It supports markup with Apple Pencil or touch, drawing or writing on a blank page, and AutoFill for PDF forms. Pencil can be useful for handwriting or drawing, but touch is also supported, so it isn’t a prerequisite. Check compatibility before choosing a Pencil for a particular iPad.

Files adds a set of organizational controls aimed at people who revisit working folders or handle documents regularly:
- Resize columns and collapse folders in List view.
- Customize folders with colors, icons or emoji.
- Place folders in the Dock for quicker access.
- Choose a default app for certain files or file types.
These options can reduce friction when returning to the same project materials, though Apple’s announcement does not quantify time saved or establish that every file type can be assigned a default app.

Treat these as Apple’s descriptions of announced capabilities, not a guarantee of performance or support in every app. The available Apple materials do not provide a productivity measurement or independent testing of recording quality, compatibility across apps, or real-world behavior. Check the relevant app and accessory support for the specific workflow you want.

- Use Preview for PDF or image markup, form AutoFill, or quick handwritten notes on a blank page.
- Organize a frequent project folder in Files with a Dock shortcut or a visual label if you repeatedly return to it.
- Check app support before relying on audio/video additions, especially for microphone choice, local recording or long-running background work.
Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, called iPadOS 26 “our most versatile device even more capable” in Apple’s June 9, 2025 announcement. That is Apple’s launch characterization, not independent evidence that the changes improve everyone’s productivity.
