If your Bluetooth mouse lags or stutters in Windows 11, start with the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter, then check the mouse’s power, distance from the PC, and nearby USB 3.0 devices. If the problem continues, reset the pairing, review power-saving behavior, and update the PC’s Bluetooth driver. Test the mouse on another PC before concluding that it needs replacement.
Start with the symptom: when and where does the lag happen?
Stuttering alone does not show whether the mouse, Bluetooth connection, or PC is at fault. Note whether the pointer pauses only after inactivity or waking the PC, moves slowly all the time, or becomes erratic only on this computer. These patterns help you choose what to check first.

- Only after inactivity: the mouse may be entering a power-saving state and taking time to reconnect.
- Continuous slow movement: check app load and pointer settings as well as the connection.
- Only on one PC: the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, driver, or configuration becomes a more likely place to investigate.
- On more than one PC: check the mouse’s power and consider whether the mouse itself may need service or replacement.
Run the Windows 11 Bluetooth troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help for Windows 11 Bluetooth problems. Open Get Help, search for Bluetooth troubleshooting, and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Follow any steps it presents, then check whether the pointer is smooth. If the issue remains, continue with the checks below.

Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance
Check power, range, and nearby devices
- Confirm the mouse has power. Make sure it is switched on and charged, or install fresh batteries. If Windows reports a battery level for the mouse, check it.
- Bring the mouse closer to the PC. Test it within a short, unobstructed distance rather than at the edge of its usual range.
- Move nearby USB 3.0 devices. Microsoft notes that some unshielded USB devices connected to USB 3.0 ports can interfere with Bluetooth. Temporarily move the mouse or the nearby USB device and see whether the symptom changes.
- Restart the mouse. Turn it off and on, then test pointer movement again.
- For a Microsoft or Surface mouse, temporarily turn off other Bluetooth devices. This can help determine whether performance changes when fewer Bluetooth devices are active.
These are isolation checks, not guaranteed fixes. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what affects the lag.

Reset the Bluetooth connection and pairing
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
- If the mouse still stutters, select it in the Bluetooth device list and remove it.
- Use the mouse’s pairing procedure, then choose Add device in Bluetooth & devices and pair it again.
Re-pairing resets the connection between the PC and mouse; it does not by itself prove either device is faulty.
Check whether the pause follows inactivity or PC wake
For Microsoft and Surface accessories, Microsoft Support says Bluetooth devices may enter hibernation after 8–10 minutes of inactivity and may take several seconds to reconnect when used again. That guidance is specific to the Microsoft/Surface accessory troubleshooting page; it is not a universal timing specification for every mouse.

If the mouse pauses only after sitting unused and then works normally, this behavior may explain the delay. If it repeatedly disconnects or lags after the PC wakes, check whether Energy Saver is on and review the Bluetooth adapter’s power-management setting. In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, open the PC’s Bluetooth adapter properties, and look for a Power Management tab. If the tab is available, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Not every PC exposes this option.
For recurring Bluetooth dropouts, Microsoft also lists restarting Bluetooth Support Service and updating the Bluetooth driver among the troubleshooting steps. Follow the service instructions in Microsoft’s guidance for Bluetooth devices that keep disconnecting.

Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver safely
Use Windows or the computer manufacturer’s official support site; the correct driver depends on the PC and Bluetooth adapter model. Avoid third-party driver download sites and do not guess which adapter driver to install.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth, right-click the PC’s Bluetooth adapter, and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers and follow the prompts.
- If Windows does not find a current driver, check the PC manufacturer’s official support page for your exact PC model. Restart if Windows asks you to.

Separate pointer-speed problems from connection dropouts
If the cursor moves consistently slowly rather than pausing or disconnecting, close apps you are not using and restart the PC. You can also check the mouse’s pointer-speed setting under its Pointer Options. Changing pointer speed affects how far or quickly the cursor moves; it will not repair a Bluetooth connection that is dropping out. Microsoft’s advice on pointer speed and reported battery level is in its guidance for Microsoft and Surface accessories.

Pair the mouse with a second PC, if one is available, and use it long enough to check the same kind of movement that caused trouble.

- It also lags or fails on the second PC: check its charge or batteries and pairing. If the problem persists, the mouse may need replacement.
Microsoft recommends cross-PC testing as a way to distinguish a PC-side problem from a device problem; failure on another PC is a reason to consider replacement, not proof that replacement is necessary.
