You can use HTML and CSS to create the appearance of a Facebook or Instagram login page, but a styled form is only a visual mockup: it cannot sign anyone in. To authenticate real users, connect your app to a supported provider flow and configure the required app settings. This tutorial shows how to build a clearly labeled, nonfunctional mockup and explains what changes when you need real social sign-in.
Choose between a visual mockup and real sign-in
First decide what the page is meant to do. A mockup is appropriate for practicing layout, styling, and form accessibility. Real sign-in requires a supported authorization integration; it should not collect a user’s Facebook or Instagram password in a third-party form.

| Approach | What it does | What it requires | Handles real users? |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTML/CSS mockup | Displays a login-style interface for design or learning. | HTML for structure and CSS for appearance. | No. It does not verify credentials or create an authenticated session. |
| Provider sign-in | Uses a supported provider flow to let a user authorize your app. | Provider or authentication-library integration, app configuration, and secure callback handling. | Yes, when correctly configured and implemented. |
Build a clearly labeled HTML/CSS mockup
This example is intentionally nonfunctional. It uses neutral styling rather than copying a provider’s branded page, and its notice makes clear that the form does not sign in or send credentials. Do not deploy it as a real login page or add code that collects provider passwords.

event.preventDefault();
document.querySelector('#message').textContent =

</html>
2. Style it with responsive CSS
Save this as styles.css beside the HTML file. The card has a constrained width, adapts to narrow screens, and preserves a visible keyboard focus indicator.
* { box-sizing: border-box; }
body {
margin: 0;
min-height: 100vh;
display: grid;

font: inherit;
}
button {
margin-top: 1.25rem;
border: 0;
background: #263b62;

}
:focus-visible { outline: 3px solid #1769aa; outline-offset: 2px; }
#message { min-height: 1.5em; }
@media (max-width: 25rem) {
.card { padding: 1.25rem; }
}
3. Check the mockup
- Open the HTML file in a browser and confirm that the notice says the form is only a mockup.
- Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move through the fields and button; the focused control should have a visible outline.
- Submit the form. It should display the mockup message, reset the fields, and not attempt authentication.
- Resize the browser to a narrow viewport and confirm the card fits without horizontal scrolling.
What real Facebook sign-in requires
For a working integration, use a maintained authentication provider or the provider’s currently supported SDK flow. Firebase documents Facebook sign-in for the web through Firebase Authentication as well as a manual Facebook Login JavaScript SDK route. In its Firebase-specific setup, you enable Facebook as a provider, configure the Facebook app ID and app secret in Firebase, and register the OAuth redirect URI in the Facebook app settings. Firebase documents popup and redirect approaches and says redirect is preferred on mobile devices; those recommendations apply to its integration, not universally to every Meta implementation. See Firebase’s Facebook sign-in documentation and Meta’s live developer documentation for current availability, SDK versions, and dashboard instructions before implementing.

OAuth is an authorization framework; OpenID Connect adds an identity layer used to verify a user’s identity. An integration should use the protocol and library appropriate to the identity and authorization needs of your app, rather than treating OAuth alone as proof of authentication. OWASP explains this distinction in its Authentication Cheat Sheet and outlines security considerations in the OAuth 2.0 Cheat Sheet.
What “Instagram login” can mean
A design mockup can be styled to resemble an Instagram login screen, but that does not make it an Instagram sign-in integration. The cited Meta API collection describes access to Instagram professional Business and Creator accounts through a Facebook Login path, with a linked Facebook Page required; it excludes consumer Instagram accounts. That is API eligibility guidance, not evidence that the path provides general consumer Instagram sign-in. Check the current Meta Instagram API collection and current Meta developer documentation for the exact product and account type your app needs.

Security requirements for a production flow
Use TLS throughout
Serve both the sign-in page and authenticated pages exclusively over HTTPS. OWASP notes that an unencrypted login page could be modified to send submitted credentials somewhere unintended; an unencrypted authenticated session can expose its session identifier. TLS protects the connection, but does not replace correct provider configuration or secure session handling. See the OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet.
Restrict callbacks and post-login destinations
Register only the callback URIs your application expects, and validate any post-login destination against an explicit allowlist or equivalent strict policy. Do not accept arbitrary redirect URLs or rely on a simplistic string-prefix check: open redirects can support phishing and can be chained into attacks against OAuth flows. OWASP describes the risks in its Unvalidated Redirects and Forwards Cheat Sheet.

Handle errors without exposing account state
Provide users a useful path to recover from sign-in failures, but use generic authentication errors where revealing whether an account exists would expose account state. OWASP discusses generic responses in its Authentication Cheat Sheet.

The autocomplete attributes in the mockup help describe the fields to browsers; they are not security controls. Browser behavior is not guaranteed, and autocomplete="off" does not guarantee that credentials will not be saved or autofilled. See OWASP’s HTML5 Security Cheat Sheet.
Best Value
If you build a custom password form or server-managed session flow, assess login CSRF as part of the threat model. OWASP describes pre-session tokens as one mitigation; apply its CSRF Prevention Cheat Sheet to your application’s design. Using a provider SDK does not excuse skipping that provider’s documented flow or your app’s own session protections.
