Which iPad should you get?
- Get the iPad mini if you want a small, light tablet for carrying around and holding for reading.
- Get the iPad Air if you expect to work with larger documents, use split-screen apps, draw on a broader canvas, or type with a keyboard.
These recommendations follow from the devices’ sizes, not hands-on testing. Apple lists the current iPad mini as the A17 Pro model and the current Air in 11-inch and 13-inch M4 versions; the M3 Air is a previous generation, not the current model. How different are their displays?
iPad mini (A17 Pro)
Apple specifies an 8.3-inch display, measured diagonally as a rectangle, with 2266 × 1488 resolution at 326 ppi and 500 nits brightness. It also has P3 wide color, True Tone, a fully laminated display, and an anti-reflective coating. Apple’s mini technical specifications list these details.

iPad Air (M4)
Apple currently offers the Air in 11-inch and 13-inch M4 sizes. The available specifications in this comparison do not establish the M4 models’ exact resolution, brightness, or weight, so those details should not be inferred from an older Air.
For context only, Apple’s 2025 specifications for the previous 11-inch Air with M3 list a 10.86-inch display, 2360 × 1640 resolution at 264 ppi, 500 nits, and 460 g Wi-Fi weight. Those are M3 figures, not confirmed M4 specifications. Apple’s 11-inch M3 Air specifications identify that older model.

Will the iPad mini feel too small for note-taking?
Not necessarily. The mini supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), according to its technical specifications. Its 8.3-inch screen can suit brief notes and sketching when portability matters more than canvas size. If your notes involve large diagrams, long documents, or frequent side-by-side reference material, the Air’s larger size is the more natural fit.

How portable is the iPad mini?
The mini measures 195.4 × 134.8 × 6.3 mm. Apple lists its Wi-Fi version at 293 g and cellular version at 297 g. Those dimensions and weights make it the clearly documented compact choice in this comparison. Apple’s mini specifications distinguish Wi-Fi and cellular weights.
Apple’s current M4 Air lineup includes two larger screen sizes, but the M4 weights are not established by the specifications cited here. Choose by the screen size you need; check Apple’s exact M4 model page if weight is a deciding factor.

What storage and connectivity should you choose?
The iPad mini is available in 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB storage configurations. Consider how much space you need for downloaded media, large files, and apps; storage choice is separate from the size decision.
For the mini, Wi-Fi and cellular versions are distinct configurations, and the cellular model weighs 297 g versus 293 g for Wi-Fi. Confirm the available connectivity and storage options for the exact Air M4 model and region before comparing configurations.

Is the iPad Air worth the extra cost?
There is no reliable current local price comparison established here, so a price gap or value winner would be misleading. Check Apple or a local retailer for the same storage and connectivity configuration on the day you buy. Then decide whether the Air’s larger screen is worth the difference for your actual tasks; a lower price alone does not make the mini the better fit if you need more room to work.
