Start with the toy’s power and the maker’s instructions for your exact model. A toy that will not answer may be switched off, asleep or low on power; one that will not connect may need Bluetooth pairing, an app permission or a fresh Wi-Fi setup. These steps differ by toy, so use the checks below to identify the problem before restarting or resetting it.
If the toy does nothing or stops talking
- Check that it is on. Use the switch or power button specified in the manual, then allow time for the toy to wake. A toy may be asleep rather than broken. Playnitive’s troubleshooting page, last reviewed August 21, 2026, advises confirming power and allowing the plush to wake: Playnitive troubleshooting.
- Check its power source. For a rechargeable toy, seat the cable or charging station as directed and look at the charging indicator. Hello Barbie’s support guidance says to leave that toy in its charging station during setup. For a battery-powered toy, check cell direction and use only the type its manual specifies; Playnitive calls for two fresh AA (LR6) alkaline cells for its plush, not for toys generally. - Try the model’s restart procedure. Use only the maker’s steps. For Mattel’s Smart Toy Monkey, the support page says to hold the power button in the foot until the light goes off. If that does not work, the page lists factory reset as a later step. Do not assume the same button or sequence applies to another toy.
For context, Mattel’s Smart Toy Monkey support page describes that model as released in 2015 and discontinued in 2019. It says the toy charges by USB, offers about 3½ hours of continuous use on a full charge and takes approximately 2½ hours to charge fully. Those are model-specific specifications, not a general benchmark for AI toys.

If the app cannot find or pair with the toy
- Put the toy in its pairing or setup mode. Follow the model’s instructions rather than searching for it at random from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Check Bluetooth and required app permissions. Mattel advises enabling Bluetooth and retrying pairing. Playnitive says its app uses Bluetooth to find its plush and requires location access on Android for its scan; that permission requirement should not be generalized to other apps or platforms.
- Keep the phone close and retry. If the maker recommends it, restart the phone before trying again. Mattel suggests restarting the phone if pairing still fails.
Pairing and internet access are separate steps: a phone may first discover the toy over Bluetooth, while the toy later joins the home Wi-Fi. Some products use a different onboarding flow. Arclumo’s FAQ, for example, tells owners of its AI Toy to connect the phone to the toy’s temporary “Arclumo-” hotspot, then select the home Wi-Fi and enter its password. That is an Arclumo-specific procedure, not a universal setup method: Arclumo FAQ.

If the toy will not join Wi-Fi or has gone offline
- Check the connection outside the toy. Confirm that another household device can reach the internet. If the network itself is having trouble, restart the router if appropriate and wait for it to reconnect fully before retrying setup. Mattel’s Smart Toy FAQ says: “If you are unsuccessful in connecting your Smart Toy to Wi-Fi, we recommend restarting your Wi-Fi router to see if that resolves the issue.”
- Verify the saved network name and password. Enter the correct Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password. Hello Barbie support associates its “I can’t find a WiFi network” message with incorrect credentials; Playnitive advises running connection setup again if the network name or password changed.
- Bring the toy closer to the router during setup. Hello Barbie’s support guidance says a yellow flashing light can indicate a weakening Wi-Fi signal and recommends moving the toy closer. Playnitive also recommends reducing the distance between its plush and the router.
- Follow the product’s setup flow again. If the toy creates a temporary setup network, use the maker’s instructions to connect through it and choose the home network. Do not assume the toy should be configured from the phone’s ordinary Wi-Fi settings.
Wi-Fi band compatibility is model-dependent. The cited support pages do not establish a universal 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz requirement; check the manual or official support page for the specific toy.

Restarting is not the same as factory resetting
A restart attempts to recover the toy without necessarily erasing its setup. A factory reset or a reset that clears network settings can require you to pair or configure the toy again. Read the exact model instructions before holding buttons or beginning a reset.
- Mattel Smart Toy Monkey: Mattel documents a power-button restart and gives factory reset as a next step if restarting fails. Its steps apply to that model.
- Playnitive plush: Playnitive says holding its button for five seconds returns the plush to pairing mode and clears stored Wi-Fi settings.
These procedures are not interchangeable. Follow the relevant maker’s instructions: Mattel Smart Toy Monkey support or Playnitive troubleshooting.

What to send the maker if troubleshooting fails
Contact the toy maker through its official support channel. Include details that help distinguish a power issue from a pairing or network problem:

- The toy’s model name or number.
- What the indicator light is doing, or the exact message shown in the app.
- Whether the phone can find or pair with the toy, and what happens during Wi-Fi setup.
- Any recent change to the Wi-Fi name or password.
- The checks and restart steps you have already tried.
Playnitive explicitly asks customers to provide troubleshooting details when contacting its support team. The model number is particularly useful because power designs, setup flows and reset effects vary from toy to toy.
