UPI is designed to move money between bank accounts quickly, but it is not risk-free: scams can trick people into authorizing payments themselves. The key safety rule is simple: your UPI PIN authorizes a transaction; never share it, and do not enter it to receive money. Before approving anything, check the action and recipient shown in your app.
How safe is UPI?
UPI is an instant bank-payment system accessed through participating apps. It has transaction safeguards, but those safeguards cannot prevent every scam—especially when a user is deceived into approving a payment. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) defines the UPI PIN as the passcode used to authorize bank transactions. NPCI says not to share it and says bank customer support will never ask for it. NPCI’s UPI FAQs explain PINs, payment requests, transaction reversals and complaints.

Focus on what the app is asking you to do. If it asks for your PIN, treat that as authorization—not as a routine step to accept money. RBI consumer guidance puts it plainly: a PIN prompt to complete a transaction means money is being sent. RBI’s 2022 Be(A)ware guide describes this deception in the context of online sales.

Common UPI scams and their warning signs
Fake cashback, refunds and rewards
A message, link or QR code may promise cashback, a refund or a reward, then prompt you to enter your PIN. That is a warning sign: NPCI says scanning a QR code and entering a PIN is for making a payment, not receiving money. Do not follow the link or scan the code to claim an unexpected reward.

QR codes and requests disguised as incoming money
Someone may say you must scan a QR code or approve a request to receive funds. Check the screen instead of relying on the person’s explanation. If the app asks for your PIN, you are authorizing a transaction. RBI’s example of a deceptive instruction is: “Please enter PIN to receive money!!” Treat that as a scam warning, not a legitimate payment step.
Fake buyers on online marketplaces
A supposed buyer may send a payment request or create one and persuade a seller to approve it, sometimes while posing as a credible person or organization. Verify that money has arrived in your own app; do not rely on a screenshot, text message or the buyer’s claim. If the app requests your PIN, stop and inspect the recipient and action.

Impersonation, malicious links and threats
Fraudsters may pose as bank or payment support through search results, social-media grievance posts, SMS or other messages. NPCI also warns about deceptive links and threats. Avoid phone numbers and links supplied in unsolicited messages; locate your bank’s support route independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Be wary of requests to install an unknown app or to move money into an investment scheme that you cannot independently verify. NPCI includes unknown app downloads and fake investment schemes among the fraud patterns users should watch for.

Claims that merely opening an app sends money
In a clarification dated 13 January 2025, NPCI addressed a specific “jumped-deposit” scenario: it said that merely opening a UPI or bank app did not process the payment described; the user had to select the request, explicitly click “pay” and authorize it with a PIN. That clarification is limited to the scenario it discussed, not a guarantee that every possible attack is impossible.
NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance covers several of these patterns, including fake cashback links, QR-code lures, impersonation, unknown apps and fake investment schemes.

Checks to make before authorizing a transaction
- Keep authentication details private. Never disclose your UPI PIN, OTP or other authentication details to a caller or message sender. NPCI specifically says bank support will never ask for your UPI PIN.
- Read the action and recipient in the app. Before entering your PIN, check who will receive money and what the app says you are doing. If the flow says pay, approve or collect, treat it as a possible outgoing payment until the screen clearly shows otherwise.
- Do not use a PIN or QR code to receive money. This applies to supposed refunds, cashback and sale proceeds. Confirm incoming payments in your own app rather than trusting a screenshot or message.
- Ignore unsolicited support links and app-install requests. Find your bank’s support contact independently instead of using a number or link sent to you.
- Review your transaction history and pending requests. BHIM lists transaction-history and pending-collect features, plus controls to block or mark illicit collect requests; features differ between apps. See BHIM’s official site for details.
- If your phone is lost, act promptly. NPCI advises blocking the mobile number associated with UPI. Contact your bank or payment provider as well.
What to do if a UPI payment is suspicious or missing
- Contact your bank promptly. Use a support route you have verified independently. NPCI directs users to their bank about fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorized transactions.
- Report cyber financial fraud in India. Call 1930 immediately and file a report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Keep the transaction reference, time, amount, UPI ID or recipient details, messages and other incident evidence available; the portal requests incident details and supporting information.
- Raise an issue through your app when available. NPCI says transaction-status checks and grievances can be raised through participating bank UPI apps. BHIM, for example, lists issue reporting for declined transactions.
- Distinguish a failed payment from an authorized scam transfer. NPCI says failed debits should reverse and advises contacting the bank if the money does not return immediately. It also says an initiated payment cannot be stopped. That reversal guidance does not promise recovery of a payment you authorized after being deceived.
- Follow up on the complaint route. NPCI’s complaint mechanism routes eligible complaints to the member bank or institution; NPCI says that institution is responsible for resolution. See NPCI’s dispute redressal information.
